Book Description
Every committed couple knows that dealing with money can stress even the most compatible partners. In today's iffy economy, sound financial planning seems particularly daunting-and all the more critical to a couple's continued harmony and success. In The Family CFO, financial planner Mary Claire Keating and writer Christine Larson introduce a unique five-step decision process-complete with specific formulas, convenient worksheets, and step-by-step instructions-designed to limit emotional conflict while effectively evaluating a family's fiscal situation. Business strategies and forecasting techniques worthy of the Fortune 500 are fleshed out through expert interviews and convincing case studies to reveal valuable practical advice on buying a house, staying home with the kids, changing jobs, paying down credit card debt, and much more. While staying home on a Saturday night to balance the checkbook or assess your household's cash flow may never be you and your partner's idea of fun, imagining how to achieve your shared dreams can bring you closer together-for love and for money.

Understanding Money Starts With THE FAMILY CFO.......2005-05-13
The concept of THE FAMILY CFO: THE COUPLE'S BUSINESS PLAN FOR LOVE AND MONEY is that couples can and should run the financial side of their homes like a business. Two good friends collaborated and wrote THE FAMILY CFO. One is a certified financial planner and a principal in a large financial planning firm, the other is a journalist whose articles have appeared in Forbes magazine, Wall Street Journal and other publications.
One of the first things THE FAMILY CFO authors do is to help couples get past the idea of not talking and sharing personal information about money. Allvine and Larson show couples that co-mingling, managing and talking about their money together is indeed necessary. They talked to real couples about their very real financial problems. As it says in the introduction -
After reading this book, you and your partner will know how to:
**Make effective financial decisions together without tension or arguments.
**Reduce the time it takes to run your finances.
**Use money as a tool to help you define your long-term vision and set goals, bringing you closer as partners and moving your relationship forward.
The charts, worksheets, resources and retirement information in THE FAMILY CFO is invaluable. If you know a couple getting married be sure to give them a copy of this book along with that bottle of good wine.
I grew up in a home where my mother never knew how much money my father made. She received a weekly allowance to run the house. When I was married the whole of it was about finance. We never had enough money and we were bogged down in debt. We pulled in opposite directions and never resolved anything. I wish THE FAMILY CFO: THE COUPLE'S BUSINESS PLAN FOR LOVE AND MONEY had been available then.
There is much information for singles also. There are great finance resources and web sites. Chapter 5, The Investment Manager, page 84 starts "Never invest in something you don't understand." Those who want to understand investments and investment jargon should definately read this book.
Highly Recommended.

Good Book For Couples Who Need To Merge Their Money.......2004-08-24
Mary Claire Allvine and Christine Larson wrote "The Family CFO: The Couple's Business Plan For Love And Money" to help couples get their finances in order.
Allvine and Larson write: "Managing your money wisely means having a clear vision of 1) what you want to do-go back to school, have a family, start a rock band-and then 2) what you need to get there-money for tuition, financial security, an electric guitar. Most couples get this backward; they focus on financial assets (what they have) to the exclusion of their real goals (what they want to do), which makes it impossible to make wise financial decisions. Only by thinking about your life goals can you really make your money work for you."
We learn that money conflicts are the biggest source of fights between engaged people and newlyweds. The authors point out that money arguments between couples usually are about priorities. For example, the husband wants to start a rock band, while the wife wants to build savings.
To help couples resolve conflicting priorities, Allvine and Larson suggest couples take an annual retreat (OK, it could be at home), write down and share their dreams, and agree on a time frame for achieving their plans. The authors say couples must decide upon both an investment manager (someone to handle investments and insurance) and a cash manager (who budgets family expenses and pays the bills).
"The Family CFO" discusses seven key financial decisions couples face, including:
1) Managing debt, including student loans and credit cards. The advantages and disadvantages of pooling money are covered. Suitors learn to tell each other just how much student debt they have, to see if either the bride or groom will bolt for the door, when they hear "the number."
2) Deciding whether or not to buy a home and the process of purchasing one. This section includes solid information about choosing the right mortgage and a home-buying worksheet to help couples evaluate the costs of home ownership.
3) Changing jobs. This section includes the financial planning that may be necessary during a career change. As with each section, couples struggling with the decisions are featured and their reasoning evaluated.
4) Having children and can the couple afford them? The authors write: "If you had a baby in 2001, you will spend between $170,000 and $338,000 on the child over the next seventeen years..."
The cost of raising children is evaluated in detail. The authors break down typical expenses by day care, clothing, food, etc. A detailed "Kids Cost Worksheet" is provided. And, they address the question: "Is it really worth it to have both parents working, given the costs of day care?"
5) Planning for retirement. Allvine and Larson tell couples that retirement doesn't just happen, couples must make it happen. Building retirement wealth is covered.
Especially for couples without high earnings, Allvine and Larson suggest couples start saving early. They write: "What you lack in money you can make up for in time. The earlier you start saving, the less money you'll need to save every year to meet your goal-compounding interest will make that money grow exponentially over time."
6) Building emergency savings and getting insurance. A detailed worksheet is provided that evaluates things such as the stability of the couple's jobs to help them decide just how much money should be set aside for an emergency.
7) Crisis management during times such as job loss.
Overall, "The Family CFO: The Couple's Business Plan For Love And Money" provides good information for couples who want to learn more about managing their money together.
A helpful tool for all........2004-01-29
This well-written book provides a clear and logical framework for couples to discuss finances and money management without so much of the emotion that often accompanies this subject. Probably every couple will find an example in the book to whom they can relate. And Allvine and Larson give us the tools (the spreadsheets) needed to put their advice into action. Those who want to explore a given topic, such as retirement planning or investing, will want to turn to additional sources, but everything you need to build a foundation of good financial planning and management is here. Perhaps the best feature of the book is the way it's written; the authors present their information in way that's easy for the financial lay person to understand without talking down to their readers. This would be a great gift for any couple just starting out, yet it's equally helpful for couples, such as my husband and me, who have been married several years and haven't really nailed money management. By the way, much of the information in the book would be helpful to anyone managing personal finances, single as well as married. Whether you want to get started on the right foot or undo poor money management habits, this book is a helpful guide.
The Family CFO.......2004-01-28
What a great vehicle for couples about to venture into a partnership! This guide should be used for pre-marital counseling to avoid the huge financial pitfalls which can disrupt a relationship. Even after 40 years of "partnership", some hints can be applied to a long standing relationship. Cleverly written too!!
Very helpful.......2004-01-21
I'm always a bit skeptical about "how-to" books, especially those about relationships and money. This one, however, is really helping us out. It has taken some of the stress out of talking about money. Instead of having these "discussions"(a.k.a arguments) only after I decide to buy a new guitar, we have them during our board meetings...a much more relaxed environment.
I just can't believe nobody thought of this concept before.

A kings story.......2002-12-08
I felt sorry for the duke, he must have been such a lonely man.....He never got any compliments from his father or his family. They all seemed so far away from each other. No wonder he fell in love with Wallis, she paid attention to him, this is what he needed, someone to treat him with respect and high regard, no wonder he abdicated....He wouldn't have to abdicate, but the P.M. at that time was a very vicious and ugly person who was JEALOUS of King Edward, he wouldn't even allow the king to speak to the other members on his own behalf...Queen Mum was also jealous and vicious, she did not like Wallis, because she was divorced and an american, she would not allow King George to communicate with the duke after he was exiled. The people all wanted King Edward to become King, they all loved him because of his charistma and his feelings for the common people.Edward and Diana were very much alike and treated VERY BADLY by their so called "royal families". Edward and Diana had more "guts" than all the royals together. King Edward would have been a "great" king, thanks to Queen Mum and her coldness toward Edward and Wallis caused him to live in an empty wrld. All the worl loves "lovers"and the Duke and Duchess were the lovers of the 20th century. How many people can have such a love????????I really loved this book and read it over and over.....
Vapid, yes...though totally fascinating..........2001-03-12
I can't help it. Even though I believe that the Duke and Dutchess of Windsor were probably two of the most self-serving people ever to exist on the face of the planet, I find them totally fascinating. And this book lets us into their domaine. Imagine a man so totally mesmerized by this woman, that not only did he leave her a fresh flower on her pillow every night of their married life, he slept surrounded by photos of her (separate bedrooms). There were 10,000 photos of them in his bathtub (covered with a mahogany top. He ONLY showered.) that were discovered after her death. That means for the duration of the time that they were married, they were photographed approximately 300 times a year. Every year. The photographs of the refurbished decor in the Paris house were fascinating. Too bad everything was sold after Dodi & Diana's death. This book is truly a window into a lifestyle that no longer exists.
finally a sneak peek into their very private world.......1999-09-08
I was very impressed with the photography and the information contained in this book. Wallis Simpson is amazing, she comes off as more chic and more royal than any of the royals. Fascinating inside look into that very glamorous era, and it's most powerful couple.
too much to pay for a couple with zero to offer.......1998-04-03
It is beyond me how any person with a functioning brain could ever find the Windsors more than the most over publicized, most tedious couple who ever inhabited the pages of People Magazine and its predecessors. What is even more alarming is that there are people willing to pay $67.50 for a book of pictures of the duke, the duchess and their collection of stuff. Pardon me for my rant, but I needed to do it. I don't think I've ever typed out my feeings on this subject before. I've ranted about this couple more than I wish to admit.. but, hell, we all have our quirks.

Book Description
"Damn the torpedoes. . . . Full speed ahead."
Admiral David Farragut's bold order at the Battle of Mobile Bay has served as a rallying cry for the United States Navy for a century. Described as "urbane" and "indomitable" by contemporaries, and lionized as an "American Viking" by the Northern press during the Civil War, Farragut was considered gallant, brilliant, and humane by friend and foe alike.
Recently discovered primary source material sheds new light on Farragut's life and times. The first full admiral in American naval history, he was small in stature and almost sixty years old at the outbreak of the Civil War. Yet Farragut possessed enormous courage and stamina. He led by example and became an inspiration to the entire nation.
At the start of the Civil War, many thought Farragut—a southerner by birth—would join the Confederate cause. But he had spent almost five decades serving aboard ships that flew the American flag. His unwavering loyalty to the Northern cause was founded in the belief that the South's secession was a first, fatal step toward national collapse.
Thoroughly researched and compellingly written, Lincoln's Admiral examines Farragut's command of the most daring and important assignment of the Civil War: the mission to recapture the vital Southern port of New Orleans. With meticulous detail, Duffy deftly retraces the steps that led up to that critical campaign.
New Orleans's defenses against attack from the Gulf were formidable. In the dead of night, Farragut ordered men to board rebel barrier ships stationed in the river and plant explosives.
"In the rigging of his flagship, the Hartford, high above the mantle of smoke, stood sixty-three-year-old Rear Admiral David Farragut. It was the only location aboard ship that afforded a panorama of the battle. He held a spyglass firmly in one hand, and a megaphone in the other. Bound securely to the mast, Farragut deftly directed the action of his fleet in what would be one of the most important naval engagements of the Civil War. He periodically raised the spyglass toward the bay, keeping a watchful eye on the Tennessee and her able commander and his old friend, Confederate admiral Franklin Buchanan. Had a rebel shell struck the Hartford's mast, a prized target of every Confederate gunner, Farragut would have crashed to the deck, or been catapulted overboard." - from Lincoln's Admiral
Farragut positioned his boats and prepared his men for battle, carefully planning every detail of the fleet's advance. The fleet passed Fort St. Philip and Fort Jackson single file as both forts opened fire with a deafening roar and covered the river with dense smoke. Navigating the treacherous Mississippi and bypassing the defenses, Farragut eventually recaptured the South's largest port, while losing only thirty-seven men.
Lincoln's Admiral also offers new insights into the Battle of Mobile Bay, arguably Farragut's most famous campaign. Farragut launched an attack against one of the forts in Mobile Bay as a ploy to fool the enemy into thinking that he was preparing to capture Mobile itself. His goal was to keep as many troops in and around the city as possible so they weren't diverted north to defend against Sherman's final offensive. It was at Mobile—as the fleet moved into the bay with Farragut's Hartford in the lead—that Farragut uttered his famous command. Unsure of where the enemy torpedoes were, but knowing that to hesitate would mean defeat, Farragut gambled and gave the famous order: "Damn the torpedoes. . . . Go ahead, Jouett, full speed ahead."
An expansive and compelling chronicle of Farragut's career, Lincoln's Admiral traces the brilliant decisions and wartime strategy of one of history's greatest military leaders.
Customer Reviews:
Short biography on Farragut.......2007-06-28
James Duffy's biography on Admiral David Farragut proves to be interesting and easy to read. The book basically summarized Farragut's career without going into great details. The book deals more or less with Farragut's military career with few insights to his personal life. The book gives a pretty clear understanding of Farragut's role in the Civil War and the amazing amount of the time he spent on the Mississippi River after capturing New Orleans. His pet project of taking Mobile had to wait two years. The book was also reflective in revealing his relationship he had with his stepbrother, Admiral David Dixon Porter, another famed Union naval leader. The author believes that Porter was quite jealous of Farragut and tried his utmost to undermined him.
If there was a singular weakness, the book doesn't covered much about Farragut's life during the peace time but then, the subtitle of the book is "Civil War Campaigns of David Farragut" so that where the main focus remains.
Overall, I found this book to be pretty well researched, well written and easy to read. Its easy to introduced this book as a nice introductionary book on the career of Farragut and no doubt, helped put him among the great seamen of our nation's history.
A solid examination of Farragut.......1999-02-04
I was not sure whether I wanted to read a biography of Farragut after having read Loyall Farragut's biography of his father, but I enjoyed Duffy's book. He does not blindly glorify Farragut's memory, but clearly shows why David Farragut's long career in the Navy and perceptive intellect made him one of the most effective military leaders during the Civil War. Duffy is also one of the few authors/historians to portray Adm. David Dixon Porter in a negative light by shedding light on Porter's attempts to upstage and undermine Farragut's accomplishments via his connections in Washington.
A very interesting biography of a Civil War Naval Officer.......1998-03-16
I read this book when it was first published in 1997 and although I had never heard of Admiral David Farragut I had heard "Damn the torpedoes..." from some where (I'm an Australian!). I found this book to be a very easy to read biography of a very interesting man. I have very limited knowledge of naval matters (I was a grunt) but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was enjoyable to read and the battle scenes were vivid and easy to follow. I would recommend this book to anybody who has an interest in the American Civil War.

What a disappointment!.......2002-08-03
How anyone could take the most facinating subjects in the world (the Nicholas Brothers) and make it dull, dead, BORING is beyond me! But this author has done it. I hope she has another career goal, because her writing is just awful and she conveys NO excitement, fun or even history. She glosses over Fayard & Harold's actual history and instead focuses on describing each tap step of each routine--and even to me, as a tap dancer, DULL! I want to hear their stories, for goodness' sake. I KNOW their dancing!
A scholarly analysis, but not a biography.......2000-10-10
I would recommend purchasing Ms. Hill's treatise on the dance and historic origins of the Nicholas Brothers' dance styles and choreography. However, those who seek a detailed biography will be disappointed, as this book was aimed to be a scholarly work, not a biographical one. The book has little mention of their personal life, marriages, divorces, activities apart and completely ignored many foreign films they made in the 1950's. Harold's marriage to Dorothy Dandridge is mentioned only in passing, and his extensive career in Paris for a decade was only lightly researched. No personal family interviews were apparently done. Although excellent as a dance resource, those seeking a more well-rounded insight on the personality and life of these two genious entertainers will be better served by a biography, which Ms. Hill's book does not aim to be. It will make a great companion work to a still much-needed in-depth look at their lives.

Succinct and informative biographical descriptions.......2003-01-11
100 Native Americans Who Shaped American History is the latest in the outstanding and very highly recommended Bluewood Books "100" series. The featured Native Americans range from an 18th century Iroquois who founded a religion which is still practiced today, to the first Native American elected to the United States Congress, to the woman who became the first Native American to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Each individual page features a black-and-white photograph and a succinct and informative biographical description of an influential Native American, ranging from the 1500's down to the modern day. A map in the upper page corner allows "at-a-glance" information as to where each of the notable Native American individuals lived. An excellent, quick-study resource for classroom and personal reference shelves, 100 Native Americans Who Shaped American History is a welcome addition to school and library Native American Studies collections.
