She's organized about her money management, spending, and household planning. She makes decisions based on her own needs and values. She's in control of her life.

The Frugal Woman's Guide to a Rich Life tells how to be just such a Frugal Woman - how to make the best use of what you already have, how to identify what you really need in your life (and what you don't), how to get the necessities (and even a few luxuries) for less, and how to cut down on your and the earth's wasted resources.

2 out of 5 stars Very basic.......2004-07-10

Although this book is packed with many interesting tips I found it just that - a compilation of tips and lacking any real in depth issues. Most of the generic tips I have read before in other frugal publications and others are just plain common sense. Its a good book for those just beginning to seek sorting out their finances - but far too basic for others that have already been treading this path for a year or so.

2 out of 5 stars A frugal woman knows she doesn't need this book..........2004-03-02

This book was published by IVillage. It is a compilation of postings from IVillage members -- advice on how to save money, time, etc. The sections all begin with "A frugal woman knows..." For example, "A frugal woman knows not to carry balances on her credit card" (but the book does not go into particular detail on debt reduction). Or "A frugal woman knows that to save money on groceries, she should try generic brands and loss leaders and always shop from a list." (uh-huh) My advice: A frugal woman knows that all of this information (if you don't know it already) can be found for FREE on the IVillage Web site. Don't waste your money. (Or else check it out of your local library.)

5 out of 5 stars Incredible World War II Story.......2005-03-26

The author gives his readers a look into the struggles he endured as a gunner and as a prisoner of war in Europe during World WarII. He relates his horror of crawling over dead and wounded soldiers, his frustration of being imprisoned, aand his couragous escape within enemy lines.

This is information that the history books don't record. I think it is vital for our understanding of the war.

So you think Peter is dead? well don't just expect to see a CD released every year under his name. He is a serious musician, composer and human rights front man. So if you think he didn't do anything in the past six years well just take a look to his Real World catalogue. He also works and compose for others. Please before talking about him check his background. He help developing groups from all around the world. PETER IS THE BEST. Still growing up...

2 out of 5 stars Not the best book about The Master, but worth having.......2004-11-30

If you are a serious fan, as am I, then you will want this book, because you will want everything you can get your hands on about The Master, the greatest vocalist/lyricist/composer of our time. Please ignore the first review above, which was obviously written by someone who only knows about Peter's hits. Peter is a serious musician and unequaled in his passion for creating serious music as well as being involved in myriad other projects. His latest album, UP, is a masterpiece! And his concerts are a religious experience! OK, I will quit gushing and review the book. Actually it is NOT well-written. The author is clearly not a writer, as it just does not flow very well. However, it is still worth having, because of the content. I have been a fan for 25 years and I learned quite a few little nuggets of info that I hadn't known b4, and these made it worth the price of the book.

1-7-06 update: Most of the 'tasty gems' of info can be found in Spencer Bright's PG biography, a much better read.

Chris Welch's book "The Secret Life Of Peter Gabriel" is a well written book about a legend in the music bussiness that goes by the name of Peter Gabriel. This book only helped to confirm what i had already known about Mr. Gabriel; that being that he is the best Singer/Songwriter in the modern day world. I have been a huge PG fan for some years now and this book pretty much gave a step by step analysis of Gabriels life. What i didnt know about Gabriel was what intrigued me most about this literary work. Gabriel deserves to win a life time achievement award for the things hes done in his life time, not only being a hero to his die hard music fans, but for always trying to help those in need and always trying to make people happy. His mind is a asset to the world and we should all be thankfull for the genious that he has produced and bestowed in everyone and everything around him.. The book was extremely well written from a first hand approach in many instances. Well worth Reading...

5 out of 5 stars Debunking Nonprofit Management Exhortations.......2002-04-01

Nonprofit organizations employ 1 in every 14 American workers, generate 6% of the gross domestic product, and mobilize the efforts of an army of 84 million adults volunteering 15 billion hours each year for their communities. While a large number of these institutions employ a chief professional officer (often called the executive director), a small proportion of the burgeoning supply of nonprofit management publications focus on that job. The few authors that do tend to tackle this topic in either an academic or hortatory manner characterized by heaping doses of prescriptions and generalities. Once readers put these pedantic, ponderous publications down, they are hard to pick up again.

For those readers who either serve as or work with a nonprofit chief executive, aspire to become one, or merely like to study these interesting creatures, along comes Robert Lewis to save the day. Effective Nonprofit Management: Essential Lessons for Executive Directors is a practical, informative, and often hilarious look at one of the most interesting and grueling jobs in the U.S. economy. Lewis brings extraordinary perspectives to this topic as a scholar of ancient Greek, a playwright, a teacher, a former lawyer, a former stage performer, and a gifted comedian. Most of all, he brings years of experience as a practitioner who has served on the governing boards of many organizations with different missions, structures, traditions, leaders, and cultures. The result is that I often found myself wondering whether Socrates, Mel Brooks, and Henry Kissinger might have sat down together to collaborate on this entertaining and educational set of lessons for nonprofit administrators.

Lewis wisely focuses on what will be one of the make-or-break performance measures in the tenure of any executive director -- his or her relationship with the governing board. His central premise is that "Your board will be able to provide you (the executive director) with the rational, consistent, high quality support to which you're entitled only when it has the tools for making good decisions." He also recognizes what too many non-practitioners don't get -- the executive director will play a profound role in the education, performance, and character of that board. His advice on how to exploit this reality is delivered with wit and wisdom, spiced with stories from his current work as a consultant, teacher, and administrator at the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations of Case Western Reserve University; his past life as a Vaudeville performer and World War II soldier; and literary citations ranging from Zeus to Marx (Groucho that is).

One of Lewis's greatest gifts to the field is the way he debunks the mind-numbing myths and simple slogans that have characterized too much of the nonprofit management and governance literature to date. His well-developed sense of the absurd blends well with the ambiguities and paradoxes surrounding the rewarding (but often bizarre) experiences of millions of people reporting to, serving on, or working with the individuals who make up the board of a nonprofit organization. I have a feeling that I would have enjoyed this book almost as much even if I had not shared these experiences in multiple roles as a chief executive, trustee, administrator, and consultant. The author's insights about the interpersonal relationships and group dynamics embedded in every nonprofit organization are applicable to so many other parts of our lives as human beings.

Effective Nonprofit Management: Essential Lessons for Executive Directors

Reviewed by Norman OlshanskyPresident, NFP Consulting Resources Inc.

As a professional who has served as an executive director and consultant to many non profit organizations, I looked forward to reading Robert Lewis's book. Mr. Lewis has an impressive background as an attorney, board member, and chair of several organizations. More recently, he has served as a consultant to nonprofits and is an educator with the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Case Western Reserve University.

Mr. Lewis has a very "folksy" way of telling his "lessons" about the trials and challenges of nonprofit leadership from the perspective of the board member and executive director. It is easy to relate to many of the examples he shares from the real world. He even shares several of his own consulting experiences to make his point.

He gives proper emphasis to the different roles and power relationships that exist between board members and the Executive. He debunks the myth of "partnership." Such cannot exit between non-equals, especially when the Board can fire the Executive but not vice versa. He follows up by giving tips on how to maximize effective working relationships and establish appropriate roles and responsibilities.

I especially liked his emphasis on the importance of being mission-driven.

He covers some very important issues such as:
Getting started on the right foot
    Remembering roles
The nitty-gritty of the ED's job
    Board Relations
    Vision and Leadership
    Accountability
He poses ten very good questions which should be asked of every board member to determine if they are serious and able to serve in a meaningful way. He also offers an appendix on tax compliance, accounting, and budgeting issues.

The strengths of the book, however, were diminished by the style of presentation and lack of depth of content. Mr. Lewis rambles on as a story teller, going off on tangents that are difficult to follow and often do not relate to the subject at hand. Readers will learn about Greek mythology, the Latin derivatives of words, and techniques of stage savvy. After all, he also has a vaudeville background.
He describes himself as a meandering octogenarian. He is someone I would love to meet and talk to about his experiences. Unfortunately, he misses the mark in this book -- not so much for what he says, but how he presents his material. If you are looking for a good book on nonprofit management, this is not one of the first ones to read. It is too rambling for the beginner and not substantive enough for the experienced veteran of nonprofit leadership.

One third of all homes sold today are condos, co-ops, or townhouses. America's #1 real estate expert shows what to watch for when buying one of them. Home ownership is still the American dream, but not everyone follows tradition by buying a detached one-family house. Condos, co-ops, and townhouses are increasingly popular alternatives nationwide. These "shared ownership" options have unique pluses and minuses, as Bob Irwin reveals in Tips & Traps When Buying a Condo, Co-op, or Townhouse.

Like other books in his best-selling "Tips & Traps" series, it's packed with targeted, reader-friendly advice. If you're a prospective buyer, Bob Irwin will show you how to:

    5 out of 5 stars Great resource!.......2007-05-28

As someone just getting in the market, I really had no idea what differentiated condos from single-family homes other than the way they looked. This book really helped me think about the pros and cons of both types of homes. I found myself drawn to condos because you don't have to worry about any exterior elements, like yards, community areas, etc. All of that is taken care of for you. But, that comes with a cost. This book shows you how to decide if that cost is worth it, what to ask about so that you don't end up in a building with a bunch of lawsuits pending (that you might end up paying for) and how to know if your building is prepared for disasters, new roofs and other such events. It was really eye-opening!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source of information for the new home buyer!.......2005-10-14

Tip & Traps when Buying a Condo, Co-op, or Townhouse, was an excellent source of information. It is a "must have" for any new home buyer looking for property. I found it to be very helpful while searching for my home.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book before you leap into a shared ownership.......2004-06-11

This book showed me the "red flags" to look for when evaluating a shared ownership developement and helped me to avoid buying into a nightmare. Ohhh, I'm so glad I read this book.

I read 4 other books on buying a condo and this book was by far the most practical and answered my questions. The format is easy to read and quickly search.

The tips and traps opens your eyes to what you're getting yourself into. Learn from the experiences of others and make the right choice for your lifestyle. Don't buy into a dysfunctional developement. It can be a legal, financial and emotional nightmare.

Thanks to Robert Irwin's advice, I passed on several developements and kept searching until I found the right condo developement for me. It has been a great choice. The book was a helpful resource during the buying process. Highly recommend.

1 out of 5 stars not for city buyers.......2004-03-28

The title may talk about "condo, co-op, or townhouse" but it is clear the author has nothing in mind but those awful suburban townhouse or condo developments. There are numerous references to density being bad and to things like counting the number of parking places. Not of use to someone who is interested in purchasing actual city housing.

    4 out of 5 stars A good primer........2002-01-17

As a prospective first-time property purchaser, I found this book to contain some good information on the particulars of condos and townhouses. I did not read the section on Co-ops however. Parts of the book seemed to contain redundant information, not necessarily for emphasis. Perhaps the chapters were intended to be somewhat self-contained. "Buying a home for Dummies" has been my first resource. I'd recommend reading something like it first in order to fully appreciate the differences w/condos and townhouses described in this book.

        Book Description

This is the first book thoroughly to explore the musical style of Henry Purcell. In this comprehensive study, Martin Adams identifies music by other composers, both within England and from abroad, which influenced Purcell’s compositional decisions. Using a mix of broad stylistic observation and detailed analysis, Adams distinguishes between late-seventeenth-century English style in general and Purcell’s style in particular, and chronicles the changes in the composer’s approach to the main genres in which he worked, especially the newly emerging ode and English opera. As a result, Adams reveals that although Purcell went through a marked stylistic development, encompassing an unusually wide range of surface changes, special elements of his style remained constant. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of music and theatre history, as well as British cultural and social history.

5 out of 5 stars Finding Meaning with Pascal as a Guide.......2007-05-01

This is a great book, which takes diverse sources such as Pascal and Woody Allen and probes the reasons why most of us waste our lives on trifles and baubles, distracting ourselves from our mortality and avoiding life's big questions. The book is part fun, part serious as it makes Pascal's inquiries into human nature very readable. The Christian and nonChristian alike should enjoy this study of how people waste their lives and how they can find meaning. Two great companions to this book, though more secular, are Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning and Erich Fromm's The Art of Loving.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding! Quite readable - An excellent companion to Pascal's Pensees.......2007-01-12

Tom Morris is a gifted writer and philosopher. This book amplifies Pascal in ways you may not have thought about before, and it clearly intriques the critical mind about the possibility of the Truth behind Christianity. The leap from mind to faith doesn't seem all that large after reading this enticing book.

        5 out of 5 stars fascinating!.......2006-09-29

this is a very insightful philosophical/theological book dealing with the plight of humanity in relation to faith in God and the meaning of life. There are a few things herein that will no doubt be disagreed with by many readers, but the many deep insights otherwise are well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Morris Captured the Spirit of Pascal.......2005-09-20

Making Sense Of It All is one the best books I have ever read on the topic of Christian philosophy and apologetics. This book is unique both in its organization and content. Morris utilizes some of the scientific, philosophical, and apologetic statements of the great Christian thinker Blaise Pascal (from Pascal's book Pensees) and shows how faith in Jesus Christ is the unique answer to mankind's deepest yearnings for meaning, purpose, significance, and life eternal. This book skillfully and successfully answers many of the existential objections that people give for not believing. Morris weaves together many of Pascal's brilliant insights into a significant and powerful Christian apologetic work.

Though covering a lot philosophical and theological ground, this book is remarkably readable and at places quite humorous. It addresses philosophical, theological, and apologetic issues with tremendous clarity and in an engaging style. This volume provides deep insight into why people living in today's world avoid thinking about ultimate issues. I only wish the book contained a bibliography and/or notes for further reading.

Thomas V. Morris has been called one of Christianity's finest contemporary philosophers (former Notre Dame professor). This book is indeed evidence of his first rate philosophical ability.

5 out of 5 stars Depth and Substance.......2004-03-03

I love Pascal. I probably quote him in my own theological work more than anyone else. Thus, I figured I would either love this book or absolutely hate it. I feared Pascal would get butchered and misconstrued as he so often does. Well, I loved it. Dr. Morris captures the essence of Pascal's thought and deftly weaves it with the insights of other great thinkers and also into practical application for our lives. This book will enrich your mind and spirit, deepening your walk with God.

                Book Description

A memorable and fascinating glimpse into the Civil War home front.

Parthenia Hague experienced the Civil War while employed as a schoolteacher on a plantation near Eufaula, Alabama. This book recounts how a frightened and war-weary household dealt with privations during the blockade imposed on the South by the federal navy. The memoir of Parthenia Hague is a detailed look at the ingenious industry and self-sufficiency employed by anxious citizens as the northern army closed in.

Elizabeth Fox-Genovese is Eleonore Raoul Professor of Humanities at Emory University and author of a number of volumes, including Within the Plantation Household; Black and White Women of the Old South.

                      Product Description

This book provides a historical analysis of Alabama in the Civil War. The author writes directly from experience which brings the reader closer to the suffering and sacrifice of Alabama. This book will not only help you understand your ancestors, but also, bring life to your family tree with stories and other experiences. Topics covered are: The effects of the Union blockade, plundering by Union troops, treatment of prisoners, slave life and much more. An excerpt: What a change from 1861, when all were so buoyant and full of fiery patriotism, with never a thought of being overcome! Now our cause was lost, all our homes more or less despoiled, the whole South seemingly almost hopelessly ruined, every little town and village garrisoned by troops who had overcome us by great odds. Yet after all our great and sore afflictions, I found only cheerfulness and Christian resignation at the end of these troublous war times, and the hope that me might yet rise above our misfortunes. (A Blockaded Family, 177)

                        Book Description

Plutarch (Plutarchus), ca. 45-120 CE, was born at Chaeronea in Boeotia in central Greece, studied philosophy at Athens, and, after coming to Rome as a teacher in philosophy, was given consular rank by the emperor Trajan and a procuratorship in Greece by Hadrian. He was married and the father of one daughter and four sons. He appears as a man of kindly character and independent thought, studious and learned.

Plutarch wrote on many subjects. Most popular have always been the 46 Parallel Lives, biographies planned to be ethical examples in pairs (in each pair, one Greek figure and one similar Roman), though the last four lives are single. All are invaluable sources of our knowledge of the lives and characters of Greek and Roman statesmen, soldiers and orators. Plutarch's many other varied extant works, about 60 in number, are known as Moralia or Moral Essays. They are of high literary value, besides being of great use to people interested in philosophy, ethics and religion.

The Loeb Classical Library edition of the Lives is in eleven volumes.

                          Book Description

Millennium Development Goals for Health in Europe and Central Asia is part of the World Bank Working Paper series. These papers are published to communicate the results of the Bank's ongoing research and to stimulate public discussion.

This study aims to contribute to the debate about the appropriateness of health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for the countries of the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region.

The study has important implications for policy choices at the regional, subregional, and country levels. Despite the fact that averages mask variations that exist within countries, certain conclusions stand out:

                          * For the ECA region as a whole, proportionately more gains in life expectancy would accrue from the control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) than from achieving the targets in the classic MDGs. This pattern holds in all subregions.

                          * There are proportionately more gains to be had from achieving the classic MDGs in Central Asia and the Caucasus subregions.

For priority setting, policy formulations, programs, and development assistance, the key messages from this study are:

                          the importance of reducing morbidity and premature mortality from NCDs and external causes across the entire region;

                          * the need for particular attention to the classis MDG indicators (infant mortality rates, under-5 mortality rates, and maternal mortality ratios) in the countries of Central Asia and the Caucasus;

                          * the importance of establishing effective and sustainable surveillance, vital registration, and health information systems to provide valid data for local decisions and international comparisons, and

                          * the continued need for interagency collaboration in support of all these objectives.

                              Book Description

Angna Enters was one of America's most versatile and gifted artists--dancer/mime, painter, sculptor, costume and set designer, musician, screenwriter, and best-selling author. For over forty years, European and American audiences celebrated her unique and brilliant theatre performances as well as the annual exhibits of her paintings in such cities as New York, Los Angeles, and London. Her travels were documented in newspapers on both American coasts, and her image filled the pages of Life and Vogue. The nation's most respected critics acclaimed her books, and her public watched her comings and goings in Hollywood with great interest. But her private life was her own mystery, kept from her audiences and her readers, even from those few luminaries who felt they knew her well.

Angna maintained her friendships with Alfred Stieglitz and Dorothy Norman solely through her elegant and personal letters. And friends such as Judith Anderson, Greer Garson, Fanny Brice, and Albert and Millie Lewin knew only her business address. Enters' home was a Manhattan apartment which she shared with her secret, lifetime companion, the journalist and art critic Louis Kalonyme, who gave up his own career to serve as her secretary, business manager, confidant, and lover. He retained close contacts with only a few of his friends--Stieglitz and Georgia O'Keeffe, Eugene O'Neill, and John Marin.

Uncommon Eloquence is a meticulously researched portrait of this complex, elusive, and incredibly talented woman. Dorothy Mandel presents us with glimpses of the behind-the-scenes travails of Angna's cross-country tours of the U.S. and her many appearances in Europe, the poverty of her early years as an artist in Greenwich Village, her churning out chapters of books in crowded hotel lobbies and train stations during World War II, her dramatic escape from her home in Malaga at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, and her struggles with the bureaucracy of Hollywood in the 1940s.

Confronted with her diversified and unique talents, critics tried for decades to classify Enters' artistry, but no one ever succeeded. Angna Enters was a loner in the art world, going her own way to create her own special reality in the arts. Mandel has captured the drive, the frustrations, and the strength of this fascinating, solitary performer.

This book is a biography of a bush teacher beginning in 1986. It is available only in hardback but if you are considering teaching in Alaska then go ahead and invest. Carolyn Kremers came to Alaska to teach at a turning point in her life and her wonder at what she sees is shared with the reader. Kremers gives a real "sense of place" through stories, conversations, poetry, journaling and student writing. Prospective teachers should especially consider reading the chapter titled "I hate school." This book demonstrates how challenging the teaching of multicultural students and students in general is everywhere. It covers not only teaching but also living in Alaska. It is also very different from all of the others books I have read about Alaskan teachers because of the contemporary prospective of the author versus the Alaska of 1900 or even 1950 that most books cover.

I loved the book. I found myself reading before I went to work in the mornings besides reading at night. I felt an eagerness to find out if she shared the same awe of the native culture that I did. She appreciated the culture she found herself in while exploring her inner thoughts and trying to come to peace with them.
