    Book Description

The Latino Journey to Financial Greatness gives Latinos a clear guide to basic financial principles as well as identifies the cultural barriers that have prevented them from making the most of their resources. In helping Latinos discover their own powerful and personal reasons for creating the secure and abundant future of their dreams, The Latino Journey to Financial Greatness offers the basic information they need in order to have money work for them.

Barajas then goes on to show us the ten steps it takes to build a personal and practical financial plan that allows one's goals a chance to become reality. In laying out the ten steps, Barajas insists that we evaluate what out major life-goals are and what our core values should be in attaining these goals, and that we assess our available resources and determine where exactly we should begin strategizing. What's more, Barajas shares with us insights on how to accomplish the hardest part -- being comfortable in celebrating our own personal financial success!

5 out of 5 stars From a Latino Financial Planner.......2003-09-09

The Latino Journey to Financial Greatness is an extraordinary and groundbraking piece of work. This book is by far the most insteresting and inspirational of all the Latino financial books so far written. Believe me! I have read them all. It is a true road map in finding financial and personal greatness. As Barajas writes" the why is more important than the how". It is practical and fun to read. As a Financial Planner, I have seen many of the cultural barriers that Bajaras points out with my clients. I have used the 10 steps with my clients and they all found the process motiving and inspiring. This book is a must read for all the financial consultants that wish to serve the Latino market.

    5 out of 5 stars From a Non-Latino.......2003-09-02

I work in an environment with mostly Latinos. I saw that my fellow co-workers were reading The Latino Journey to Financial Greatness. I asked to borrow a copy and let me tell you, the book is not just for Latinos. I am glad someone has had the courage to write a book like this. I saw myself in many of the limiting money beliefs he talks about. After reading this book, I signed up for my 401k plan, and have started saving money to live a life of financial greatness. His book is not a get rich quick book, like most others. It is about inspiring you to help you make more money to live a great life. All I know is that I have just purchased 3 books and have handed them to my non-Latino family members.

    5 out of 5 stars From a Financial Advisor.......2003-08-27

I just finished reading Louis' book, The Latino Journey to Financial Greatness. The book is extraordinary. I am a financial advisor from Houston, Texas and have been working in the Latino community for over 5 years now. I read so many books on personal finance that I thought no one could specifically address the financial needs of our community. It's thoughtful, inspirational, and just plain honest and practical. I now recommend this book to all my clients. As someone who is currently involved in the financial planning industry, I can honestly tell you that this book will transform our community to financial greatness. I hope the book does well. I will definitely do my part and tell everyone I meet to buy a copy.

5 out of 5 stars A Latino professional on the path to financial Greatness!.......2003-07-09

Louis' book is revolutionary and groudbreaking, wow! The Latino Journey to Financial Greatness will change your life! Louis is the first and only Latino author to address the culturally conditioned beliefs about money that limit latinos. All latinos should read this book. This book should be required reading at the high school and collegiate level. The book is a very easy book to understand yet its message is pure and powerful. You will not change and you will not start your path to financial greatness until you make yourself aware of what is limiting you. Louis opens your eyes to the cultural limiting beliefs that hold us all back!

The Journey to greatness starts by focusing on your strengths and delegating your weaknesses. Despite what Home Depot tries to make you believe, A do it yourselfer is wasting their valuable time on a weakness. Some people waste a life time on careers and task that take them off their path to greatness. I ask you today. Are you a specialists or are you a generalists? Who would you go to today if you had a brain tumor, a neurosurgeon or your campadre that is a real estate agent, insurance salesman, travel agent and notary. Louis identifies this cultural barrier in his book as Mi Campadre, Consulting (Non)Experts. We as latinos do this all the time and aren't aware of it. The book is divided into two parts. The first part makes you aware about the 10 barriers or potholes on your journey to financial greatness. It is also very inspiring and motivating. Only after you are aware of the barriers will you be ready for the second part of the book, the 10 steps to financial greatness. I use the word Awareness because it is the key that Louis Barajas will hand you to unlock the imaginary door that you have placed on your path to financial greatness.

For the pastor in Indiana, thank you for writing that great review it was very helpful for me. Please contact me at (323) 890-8180. I will be in Indiana soon and would love to share my story with you and your congregation, thank you and kindest regards.

    5 out of 5 stars a pastor approves.......2003-06-14

The best recommendation I can give this book is that I am going to suggest it to my congregants. It is written for them, that is, hard working, Spanish-speaking immigrants who may not understand how money really works. And by the way, I understand the book is soon to be available in Spanish.

The reason I like this book as a pastor, is that what Barajas means by "financial greatness" is not an idolatry of the dollar, but a much broader approach to true happiness. In his how-to approach, his illustrations, and his closing forms to complete, he guides the reader through a wholistic approach to life.

First is the question: what are your major life foci and roles? He gives the examples of foci that include physical health and spiritual growth. Then he deals with roles that are associated with each focus, e.g., spouse, parent, coworker. And this like every other chapter concludes with a written exercise to help the reader answer the focus question.

Chapters on "Core Values," "Ideal Outcomes," "Starting Point," "Obstacles," "Resources," "Strategy," "Practical Systems," "Monitor Progress," and "Celebrate and Share" follow. This is a good pedogogy and an integrate approach. Money is central to but not solely what he means by wealth.

I plan to give this book to my compadre, and once he has read it, to discuss it with him. I think it will help him manage his hard earned money as well as prioritize his values. And that will make him not only a more proficient bread winner, but a more grateful recipient of the banquet of life.

          Book Description

Beth is a spirited woman with mental retardation, who spends nearly every day riding the buses in Philadelphia. The drivers, a lively group, are her mentors; her fellow passengers are her community. When Beth asks her sister Rachel to accompany her on the buses for one year, they take a transcendent journey together that changes Rachel's life in incredible ways and leads her to accept her sister at long last-teaching her to slow down and enjoy the ride.

Full of life lessons from which any reader will profit, Riding the Bus with My Sister is "a heartwarming, life-affirming journey through both the present and the past...[that] might just change your life" (Boston Herald).

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Prose.......2007-09-22

This book isn't for everyone, but anyone who lives with a mildy retarded family member will see this book as an eye-opening and touching memoir of the highs and lows of living and coping and dealing with a person such as Beth, the author's sister, with whom she agrees to ride the city buses with over the course of a year.

The chapters are beautifully interweaved with flashbacks to the author's childhood with Beth, who is 18 months younger than the author. The parents' coping with Beth, and how the rest of the family deals with this headstrong and independent girl without once ever mentioning the words "mild retardation" and yet determined to keep together as a family in the early 1960s bring this book to life for many Babyboomers. Rachel did a lot of research on the subject to write for this book, and inserts statistics at logical moments without ever tiring the reader.

Along with the encounters on the bus are small vignettes of the various and varied drivers who deal with Beth on a daily basis. Bus drivers are profiled coming from all aspects of society. Some like Beth, others do not, and many came forward to talk about Beth and her incessant chats while sitting in the front of crowded buses with strangers all around her. Bus drivers are her friends, are her mentors, are her romantic interests and Beth at times reminds us of our girlish teenage crushes...and she is 39 years old while the story takes place.

Although this book mostly deals with Beth and her daily bus rides around town, the author also talks about her own failings; her recent break-up, her move to a new apartment, and we see how dealing with Beth, and talking with bus drivers, help Rachel find the answers for her own troubles.

This book may not be for everyone. One must have a close experience with a person such as Beth to understand the many detailed and sometimes long-drawn-out episodes of city bus travel to truly appreciate this book. Beth is beautifully portrayed in this book, and with all her flaws and handicaps we can see a bit our ourselves through her daily bus journeys.

Read this book with patience and understanding for the mildy retarded people in our society. We all know and have dealt with our own Cools Beths.

1 out of 5 stars This book went on and on.......2007-08-29

and on and on and on..............a shorter memoir maybe I could have, maybe, plodded through without so much difficulty.

5 out of 5 stars This was a great ride!.......2007-08-17

Okay, so maybe not the most original title in the world, but the story sure is. The author decides to spend some quality time with her mildly retarded sister, Beth, (whom she never fully understood). Simons basically takes a very long leave of absence from work and totally immerses herself in Beth's world - which consists mainly of riding the bus system in an unnamed Pennsylvania city. But this is not just a simple journey. She experiences how Beth has carved out a life for herself, the people she has connected with, the joyful outlook she has on life, and realizes that maybe Beth's life is fulfilling in its own way. This is also a journey through her childhood as she
reflects on her memories, her relationship with her family as well as her sister. By slowing down her fast-paced existence and taking the time to experience a year with her sister, Simons certainly discovers a lot about herself, and comes away with a different, more appreciative view of her life. Hopefully you will too. I know I did.

4 out of 5 stars My Thoughts on 'Riding the Bus with My Sister: A True Life Journey'.......2007-05-29

This is the story of Rachel and Beth. Two sisters close in age but share little in common. Rachel is a working woman. She barely has time for herself let alone her sister. Beth is a fun-loving care-free flamboyant woman who has an extreme lover for life and her beloved buses. Beth is also mentally reatrded. Rachel experiences gui;t for not having spent much time with her sister. She promises her sister that she will ride the bus with her for a year. All Rachel wnats out of this is time with Beth. She gets way more than planned. She meets all of the quirky and exotic bus drivers with diverse personalities. She meets thoughtful Jacob, and hunky Rodolpho. They all teach her very important lessons that reshape her life. Rachel also learns a lot about her sister. She never knows how to deal with her mood changes and odd behaviors. All she knows is that she loves Beth and Beth loves her, and they care about each other. In the end Rachel turns her life into the "big life" she has always dreamed of. This story will benefit you also. You can learn many things from this book that may just help you turn you life into the right direction.

          5 out of 5 stars A Lesson in Life.......2007-04-22

This is a story about Rachel, sister of "Cool Beth". Beth is mildly retarded. She lives on her own and lives on disability. She doesn't have a job. She rides the local buses in her Pennsylvania city, every day. Looking for something to write about, Rachel decides to visit her sister and spend a day with her. This leads to an article in the newspaper. The experience has surprised Rachel and it has sparked a new relationship with Beth. So, Rachel decides to "Ride the bus with her sister" and she does. Every two weeks, every month of the year. This book is about that journey. It isn't just a journey on a bus. It is a journey through the life of Rachel and Beth. Rachel learns to come to terms with her feelings and having a sister who is mentally challenged. She gives the reader flashbacks to their childhood and how hard it was sometimes. Their parents divorced when they were young. Beth was separated from Rachel and her brother and sister. She lived with their mom who married an ex-con abused Beth and her mother. There was a period time where they didn't know where Beth was. Now, as adults, Rachel wants to be a better sister and learn how to understand Beth and her handicap. This is one of those books where I now want to buy a bunch of copies and give one to everyone I know. The writing style is very personal and full of emotion. A reader learns many lessons reading a book like this. It's not exclusively about mentally handicapped people and how to understand them. Rachel's experience with Beth riding the buses and getting to know the drivers taught her about regular people and their insights on their lives and what brought them to where they are now. Rachel was amazed by the friendly drivers who befriended Beth and had more patience than she could ever know. She was surprised by their kindness and generosity when Beth needed support during an operation or help finding a bathroom. Rachel's life changed as well. She learned to open her heart and slowly let people in. It changed her life. This is definitely one of the best reads I have experienced. Highly recommend!

                      Book Description

Beautifully crafted stories of psychotherapy-told for the first time from the perspective of the therapist In her long career as a psychotherapist, acclaimed author Lillian Rubin occasionally encountered patients who demanded a very special, even unorthodox, therapeutic approach. For the first time, Dr. Rubin tells the stories of her most fascinating, most challenging case, "from the other side of the couch," focusing not just on the patient, but on her own inner process as she confronts the issues each case raises. Each of the seven stories she tells is a moving journey into the human psyche, from the secret life of "The Woman Who Wasn't" or the extreme regression of "The White Hat" to the smoldering rage of "The Man with the Beautiful Voice." Through these captivating tales, and in a thought-provoking introduction, Dr. Rubin illuminates the process of therapy and how it works, especially when rules need to be bent or even broken. For anyone who has been in therapy, or even wondered what happens behind those tightly sealed doors, this book offers a gift of insight. "This daring and engrossing book offers a unique gift to readers: a window into the mind and the heart of both sides of the therapeutic relationship-the patient's and the therapist's. Only a writer and thinker as agile as Lillian Rubin could offer such compelling stories that tell us so much about the process of pain and healing for both patient and therapist." -Kim Chernin, author of The Hungry Self Lillian B. Rubin is the author of eleven books including Tangled Lives, Worlds of Pain, Intimate Strangers, and Just Friends. A sociologist and psychotherapist, Dr. Rubin has been a senior research associate at the Institute for the Study of Social Change at the University of California, Berkeley. She lives in San Francisco.

5 out of 5 stars Seeing the Whole Picture.......2007-02-18

This book gives you an inside view of the therapist-patient relationship from the therapist point of view. It's enlightening to read how the relationship develops and how that impacts the patient's life. You can get a little bit of a feel for how therapy works and what happens. The book does a nice job of juxtaposing the 'rules' of how things are to be done and 'intuition' about how things should be done and the struggle between the two. My favorite chapter was the final one where the author shared her personal experience in therapy and what that relationship meant to her and did for her. A good read for a therapist or a client in therapy.

5 out of 5 stars The book with the beautiful voice.......2006-12-31

Wonderfully real and inspirational reflections of therapeutic sessions with a therapist who seems to have the healing combination of genuineness, authenticity, self- and other-awareness, and the innate desire to really hear and see her clients. The words harmoniously sing from the pages of this book with the chorus repeatedly reminding us that in therapy it is indeed the relationship that heals.

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully crafted short stories.......2004-07-23

Dr Rubin's stories are drawn from her clinical practice and her experience with her patients. The reader meets Eve Gordon who endured a harrowing childhood with her alcoholic parents; now 39, she lives a life of virtual isolation and desperately wants to become her therapist's friend. Many sessions are spent with Eve curled up in the corner of the practice without uttering a single word. Bruce Marins, a cripple - a "Thalidomide baby", a drug taken by his mother to cure her morning sickness - who rejects sympathy as being patronising, who feels anger and distrust of people around him and who sees deceit, pity and rejection wherever he turns. As Dr Rubin is about to greet Bonnie Paulsen and Jerry Stillman in her office, she is far from picturing the way these two patients are going to deceive her with their egregious lies and carefully plotted hoax - "How easily any patient can defeat even the most artful and accomplished therapist." she writes! Jake Garvin suffers from manic-depressive psychosis and so needs help because he's having trouble writing his dissertation for his degree. This is all the more urgent since the two job offers Jake has received depend on his finishing his dissertation. A case which will unfortunately end very tragically. Richard Durbin and Valerie Goldner are a yuppie couple. But why does Richard stubbornly refuse to have a child with Valerie? What mysterious event in his past makes him refuse to become a father? And finally there is the case of Delfina Ortega, a Mexican American, who was pregnant at 16, then became an excellent high school student graduating near the top of her class, who was subsequently awarded full scholarship to the university and then, when she was accepted to a graduate programme in Latin American history, she falls into a panic attack.
Dr Rubin's cases are a wonderful read for those of us who are mere laymen in the field of psychology.

                      5 out of 5 stars Five Stars.......2003-07-02

Dr. Rubin explains that there are a set of rules regarding the relationship between a patient and doctor and how she sometimes broke the rules to help her patients. She shows the soul-searching and thought processes that go into the decision to break the rules by describing interactions with some of her patients. She does a great job of describing these cases, building the tension for the reader who is wondering why the patient has come in for therapy; there is always a big payoff when the secret trauma suffered by each patient is revealed. This is a very short book and I found myself wishing it was longer. I could easily read 400 pages + of these gripping stories. The human drama never ceases to be interesting and the author has a talent for writing in simple yet artistic prose.

4 out of 5 stars The Struggles Of A Teenage Boy During WWII.......2006-03-16

When Marek discovers a shocking secret about himself, he decides that he must help the captured Jews fight the Germans. While the Nazis are imprisoning Jews in the Ghetto, Marek is helping one Jew avoid capture. Will Marek be able to help the Jews in their fight against the Nazis? During World War II, a teenage boy named Marek lived in Warsaw with his mother and stepfather, Antony. Although Marek witnessed Nazis imprisoning Jews, he joined his friends in robbing an escaping Jew. Marek discovered he was partly Jewish and his guilt caused him to use the stolen money to help another Jew, Pan Jozek, hideout. When the Jews rose up against the Germans, Marek and Pan Jozek snuck into the ghetto to help the Jews. Pan Jozek was killed before Marek and several other Jews were rescued by Antony. After escaping from the ghetto and the Germans, Antony, Marek, and Marek's mother left Warsaw to live with Antony's sister in the country. Antony risked his life to save Marek and as repayment Marek agreed to let Antony legally adopt him. I recommend that everyone read this book about a young boy and his struggles during World War II.
The situations the characters in this book go through seem incredibly realistic. Marek had to cope with the fact that his father died and his mom had remarried. Pan Jozek narrowly escaped the Germans and had to prevent being imprisoned or killed. Marek and his parents left the busy, chaotic city of Warsaw and moved to the quieter, more peaceful countryside.
The characters are described in great detail. Marek is a fourteen-year-boy who is partly Jewish. Pan Jozek was a Jewish man who was studying to be a doctor before the war; he had gentle eyes, high cheekbones, and an amiable expression. Marek's grandmother dressed in large skirts with multiple pockets and his grandfather's old jacket.
The setting is also described in detail. Theater Square was a small area in town similar to a strip mall and park combined. The Jewish ghetto was a small area filled with many people; it was destroyed when the Jews started an uprising against the Germans. Marek's apartment was just the right size for their family of three.
I recommend this book to everyone. It is a wonderful story about the struggles of daily life during World War II. The characters, places, and events in this book are described in such detail that you can actually picture the story taking place in your mind.

4 out of 5 stars It is an adventure for a 14 yr old boy........2005-03-12

The Man from the other side is about a 14 yr old boy who helps his stepfather smuggle food for the Jews. This book has Jews, polish, and Germans during the war. I like the book because it has adventure for a young boy who lost one of his friends because of a German who killed him by a pistol. His stepfather wants to adopt him though. I disliked the book because it talks about smuggling food which has none thing to do with World War II.

5 out of 5 stars REVIEW FOR THE MAN FROM THE OTHER SIDE.......2005-01-07

The Man From the Other Side, by URI Orlev is a great and amazing novel. It is about a fourteen-year-old boy, Marek, who lives in Warsaw, Poland. He lived in a ghetto or an enclosed area where Jews were kept and told to stay. The nazi's would torture and kill them to rule their lives. Lucky for Marek, he was catholic, so hid not feel the pain the Jews did. You as the reader follow the life of Marek throughout the story.
I think this book is really great and fascinating. The characters are really well brought in the story. It is almost like you are actually there in Warsaw, when all of this is taking place. I think that if you read this book you will be very impressed. I think this book has a very valuable moral to life. It is that always help those in need and to not single anybody out because of their backround. It is basically saying do not discriminate anybody.

4 out of 5 stars The Man From The Other Side!!!!!!!!.......2003-04-22

The Man From the Other Side is a well written by the author he explains the story and other details really well, I could basically see the people in my head when I read the book. This book is placed in the 1940's in Poland were a fourteen year old boy named Marek, and his step-father smuggle goods through a sewer into the jewish community. Marek finds during the book that he is half jew and decides to help another jew he meets to escape from Poland and away from the Nazi.

I would highly recommend this book to people that like or are interested in WWI because it talks about the enivorenment the jews lived in which, was really detailed by the author. Also the author painted a perfect description of the jews and the way they lived. If you want to find out more for yourself take a risk and READ THE BOOK!!!

                          Book Description

Torre develops a language of myth to address human experience in the great wild places of Alaska and the West...in lines that recall Whitman.
                          --Publishers Weekly

Carefully wrought and passionate, Stephan Torre's poetry considers life and work on the edge of wild lands, wrestling with one of the central paradoxes of the human condition: the drive to change and conquer the very wilderness that is the source of sanctuary and spiritual renewal. Wilderness settings permeate Torre's work, from Wyoming's flathead Lake to the south-central coast of California to the spruce forests and subsistence farms of British Columbia's Frazier River Valley. Images evocative of manual labor also abound-axle grease, wood shavings, machinery rusting in abandoned fields- as Torre realizes his themes with unprecedented empathy and lyric intensity.
