This book is a must-have reference for the home to be pulled out often. I thought I was a savvy consumer, but this book contains tips and reveals scams that ONLY an investigative reporter could uncover. Truly a great guide for all of the major investments in life: home and car buying, home and car repairing, buying insurance, etc. And it also gives great tips on everyday scams that we just don't have time to check up on. (Did you know that there's help to block junk mail and credit card offers???)

Elisabeth Leamy genuinely wants to help and prevent people from getting scammed. Her book is honest, real, and VERY easy to follow. It's consistent, and I appreciated that the most. Each chapter has sections like "know the signs," "do your homework," and "where to complain," which is really great for someone like myself. I'm a senior in college who has relied on mom and dad for way too long, and this book will definitely keep me informed and out of trouble. I loved the book! I recommend this book to anyone who appreciates consistency, good content, and honesty.

I love the way The Savy Consumer by Elizabeth Leamy is layed out. All you have to do is read a couple pages to get the info you need on a topic. I've already read the ones about getting rid of junk mail, getting a good deal on a car, and making collection agents stop calling. I learned a lot and you will too!

Every consumer should be armed with this weapon! The book is very user-friendly and very comprehensive. The author writes in a way that readers can easily understand. This is a book that you can purchase and refer back to for the rest of your life. I've watched the author's reports on TV for some time now and I think she's the best reporter in the business. The book manages to mix the wrestling tales and finacial tips surprisingly well and gives good advice. If you want to serious investing strategy, look elsewhere, but if you want entertainment and good basic financial advice, this books for you...

Practical Advice and Wrestling Anecdotes--A Worthy Read.......2006-10-20

This is a great, small little book written by one of the more charismatic wrestling personalities of the last several years.

It is a mixture of personal anecdote and "financial advice." I put financial advice in quotes because there are very few specific recommendations that JBL makes over the course of the book. Rather, he gives out general approaches and beliefs that, if applied, he thinks will lead to success for anyone.

And I think he's right--this is the way to do it. It's a principle-centric book, giving you a set of tools, rather than a step-by-step schematic which may or may not apply to your specific situation. Some people may not like it for that reason, however; instead of being told to "work hard and save your money" they might want a list of 10 steps they can take to become instantly wealthy. JBL knows that these "get rich quick" schemes are generally fraudulent, so he stays away from them, giving out the less popular but more honest slow-paced strategies for eventual financial freedom. It's like Mom telling you to eat your green beans. Sometimes, it isn't what you want to hear, and it's certainly not glamorous, but it's probably the right advice.

As a wrestling fan, I enjoyed hearing a little bit about his background and youth. The thing that made me happiest, though, was getting a real insight into Bradshaw's personality--he shines through the pages. You can tell that he wrote this himself, and that's kind of cool in a day and age where celebrities usually pawn such labor off to underpaid, no-name ghost writers. He's witty, if rough, and genuine. Seems like a good, cool guy that some people just wouldn't be able to stand because they wouldn't get his sense of humor.

The one real drawback, and reason I gave it one less star than the full compliment, is due to the books repetitiveness. It's short enough that there's really no call for repeating itself, and yet (like so many other financial advice books, see: Rich Dad, Poor Dad) it does. Early and often.

This is a book of good personal advice and fun wrestling anecdotes. Fans of Mr. Layfield, like myself, will love the ability to see what the man is like through his writing. The personal advice, if consistently acted upon, will lead to success for just about anyone, I have no doubt.

My first Personal Financial Management book I bought...I wish I knew better.......2006-05-11

I first bought this book almost a year ago when I was clueless about personal finance stuff...Me being a wrestling fan the book was pretty interesting when Layfield mentions about stuff behind wrestling's curtain. But with regards with actual financial managment stuff...its ok at best...

Bottom line...don't get this book...Van Tharp's "Safe Strategies For Financial Freedom" is a much better bet!!!

Good book to whet one's appetite for more financial text. True stories that seemed relatively un-influenced keep you going through the pages. (Though you have to go back a couple times.)

Flash over substance.......2005-08-30

I am a big wrestling fan and I love the JBL's gimmicks. But this book have absolutely no financial sense. If you look for a "How to get rich book" forget it! It is more like an endless parade of boring football anecdotes and useless wrestling stories with very little financial astuce. Despite the fact that I love JBL and I love his persona, don't waste a single dollard on this book. Unfortunately, you won't become the second coming of J.R.Ewing by reading this book.

An Andalusian artist's war-torn career: Franco to Evita.......1999-06-01

Miguel de Molina's autobiography, entitled 'Botin de Guerra' (Planeta, Buenos Aires, 1998) on the copy I purchased in Buenos Aires, provides a panoramic view of the Spanish performing arts scene through the 1920's, 30's and 40's, including glancing acquaintanceships with Lorca and de Falla. Portions of his day-by-day survival of the Spanish Civil War remind one of "Ay, Carmela", the film by Carlos Saura - and indeed, just mention the film in any youth-filled Tapas bar in Sevilla and you'll get attention - i.e., de rigueur for any visiting student.

Spain aside, Miguel's intimate soirees with Juan and Evita Peron provide rather touching insight into those personalities, their tastes, manners and personal interests. Evita, as a sincerely-concerned and energetic benefactor (an effective organiser with charming and unaffected 'magnetismo') appears to have set an example few modern politicians would deign to match - being less concerned with her own greatness than with the well-being of her constituents.

I only regret Miguel's lack of depth of involvement in so many fascinating and mysterious characters. Given the tumultuous political and economic atmosphere of those times, he could rarely remain longer than six months in any given locale - only grazing characters ranging from the murderous to the sublime.

Admirers of Cantinflas and Negrete may be in for a shock, however. Negrete, behaving like a McCarthy-ist fanatic, drives exiled de Molina from Mexico. Cantinflas attempts to disrupt Molina's opening night, and is removed from the theater by police. Cantinflas later apologizes (once he knows Molina's leaving) - and appears rather foolish, though willing to admit to error. Negrete is entrenched in self-righteousness. "Cuando las Estrellas Viajan" will never be the same for me - though I still must love that old film of Negrete's - dispite his meanness - or, alas, human frailty.

Note that those who disagreed with Franco's fascism or military coup were too often labeled communists or leftists. In fact, the common Spaniard's position in that civil war seemed most often decided by where he lived - i.e., decided by draft notice.

By the way, Molina's "La bien paga'" appears as cut number 18 on my copy of "Songs of Almodovar" CD.

Please accept my apologies: the above is totally impromptu. I entered Amazon seeking a CD of Miguel de Molina's music (one does exist, "Raices de la Cancion Espanola", though I don't find it here). I do understand that no film of his work, music or dance survives, the one film he did participate in having been destroyed by the Franco-ists.

Comprehensive guide for building your own investment plan........1998-12-04

As I approached 30, I became a little worried about my future financial security. Not knowing much about the stock market, investing, IRAs and whatnot and being a do-it-yourself person, I went looking for a book that would help me in my financial planning. B.L. Gummow's book "Winning the Money Game Made Easy" jumped right out to me. I found this guide incredibly easy to read and use. Mr. Gummow, through a series of thoughtful relevant exercises, helped me evaluate my current financial situation and develop my own investment plan based on the things I want to achieve in my future. I had always felt that Wall Street symbols and jargon were very confusing. This book helped explain what things meant and empowered me to make my own decisions and not just regurgitated advice from co-workers and friends. I would highly recommend "Winning the Money Game Made Easy" to any self-starter who wants to make knowledgeable decisions about their future financial security.

crowns of thorns and glory.......2000-07-30

This is one of the best books on the Civil War era in that it not only tells a part of the story from each "side," it tells it from a woman's point of view. The two first ladies of the time were in some ways very much alike and in other ways very different. I came to care about each of them, but must admit that I felt very close to Varina Davis because she was so REAL. I get the impression that she could make a person feel comfortable, that she did not use her status for personal gain or "look down her nose" at anyone. I will not forget when she walked in the mud carrying a child so that her nurse, who was ill, could ride in the wagon. Varina blossomed from a shy, young and beautiful (second) wife of a very influential man to an outgoing, personable, gracious first lady who remained "human" all the way. She suffered greatly both in her personal life and with her country. I have borrowed this book twice since it has gone out of print. Now I have Amazon tracking it down for me. It's a great read!

Didn't really explain anything.......2006-04-06

I thought that she was going to explain to you how to invest in rental properties without going into deep debt for yourself. However, the truth is you need money to invest in real estate. So, there's really no way around it, which made her book redundant. She just gave examples of 3 people with 3 different investment strategies. In the end, the one with the most number of rental properties ended up with the largest profit growth. I really did not find the book useful for someone looking to invest in rental properties.

Mabel Armstrong has accomplished a difficult task with her book, How to Invest in Rental Properties without Mortgaging Your Soul. She has written a thorough, step-by-step investment guide with clear, accessible language and an encouraging, friendly tone. She explains basic investment principles in a simple, logical way, but personalizes the information she provides with individual case examples, many of them her own. To this reader, Armstrong sounds like a real estate investment expert; but because she provides stories of her own confusion and inexperience, I trusted her and believed I was capable of doing what she has done.

If real estate investment seems like a dry subject, be prepared for a surprise. Armstrong's guide has an attractive cover and layout, a wonderful chapter on social responsibility, and an overall personal style I found thoroughly enjoyable. I felt as if I got to know this likeable author through her personal anecdotes, and felt as if she wouldn't mind if I telephoned her to ask for advice. In addition, the book is an empowering read: Even when the details get complicated, Armstrong breaks them down into orderly, do-able tasks, so the reader is left feeling I can do this!

Though its focus is real estate, I'd recommend this book to anyone who is ready to learn more about taking responsibility for her money.
