Daw anthology causes supermodel to love a Trekkie!.......2003-11-04
That headline gives you an idea of the types of stories that you'll find in this volume. 36 stories deal with Tabloid headlines and manage to create brilliant stories revolving around those scourges of supermarket shelves.
Of the 36 authors that make an appearance, some of the more famous are Laura Resnick, John DeChance, Thomas Monteleone, Alan Dean Foster, Greg Cox, Esther Friesner, Jody Lynn Nye, and Mike Resnick.
Of the 36 stories, the best by far are The Bride of Bigfoot by Lawrence Watt-Evans, the wonderfully delightful tale of one Bigfoot's search for true love. Royal Tiff Yields Face of Jesus, by Esther Friesner, a story about Charles and Dianna that turned out to be a little too close to the truth in some ways, and Stop Press by Mike Resnick a brilliant bit of fun that details just how hard it is to make up those silly headlines.
The only reason this volume gets 4 out of 5 stars and not the full five is because some of the stories really drag and could have been left out. But the clinkers are few and far between. Over all this is a really great anthology!
Editor Gets Idea: Thousands Flee Screaming!.......2002-05-18
The title sounds like one of those headlines you might read off a tabloid. The cover is silly and strange, and its supposed to be. Because this is a SF anthology devoted to tabloid tales, the kinds of stories we always hear or read about but never take seriously. Beyond the garish cover and title, are some suprisingly good and some suprisingly funny short stories. Then again, with Martin Greenberg and Esthner M. Friesner teaming up to edit this anthology, maybe not so surprising.
There are thirty six stories to choose from, some by well recognized authors such as Alan Dean Foster, Harry Turtledove, Lawrence Watt-Evans, Mike Resnick and Jody Lynn Nye. As with all anthologies, the quality of the stories varies, but there are some real delights in here. "2,437 UFOs Over New Hampshire" by Allen Steele gives a look into the lives of whole town of "alien abductee". "Is Your Coworker a Space Alien?" by "Bob" bes Shahar is a hysterical look into the workplace and the 'normal' folk that inhabit it.
This isn't the serious side of SF, but these tales can still make you think. They have fun extrapolating on the impossible. Elvis clones, aliens, bigfoot, all the kind of things that you look at in the local tabloid and think "yeah, right." It's appeal is the strange, the idiosyncratic and the screwball. If you enjoy reading scandal sheets, or just want a book that doesn't take itself seriously, this might be just the anthology to curl up with. Just watch out that those pesky aliens don't make off with your chocolate chip cookies!...
I don't even know where to start..........1998-10-11
This guy Greenberg -- is there a subject somewhere in the world he hasn't made into a short fiction anthology? My God, this is beyond extreme! A bunch of fantasy writers try to out-weird the tabloids? This should be stupid, but it's surprisingly good. The expected stories about Elvis, Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster et al. abound, and there isn't a clunker in the bunch. For cryin' out loud, give this a shot!

Book Description
If you're one of the thousands of parents who feel frustrated and overwhelmed by the different kinds of medical advice you're getting from doctors, homeopaths, and others, then you will find comfort -- and answers -- in this comprehensive guide to integrative medicine for children. Fully updated and revised to reflect the numerous recent advances in this field, Dr. Kemper's The Holistic Pediatrician incorporates the best of both mainstream and alternative medicine to aid parents in dealing with the most common childhood health problems. From ear infections to allergies, fevers to diaper rash, colds to bedwetting, this invaluable guide provides factual advice that aims to heal the whole child, rather than espousing one medical philosophy or another.
Based on scientific evidence and written in commonsense language rather than medical jargon, The Holistic Pediatrician is the first place any parent should turn for authoritative and empowering advice on all aspects of their children's health.

Disappointed with Kemper.......2006-09-24
I was very excited to buy this book. I have found it very useful as a mother of 4 and as a pediatric nurse practioner student. I was hoping that K. Kemper took a more intelligent and open perspective on vaccinations. Despite over 11,000 adverse advents reported each year from vaccines, scientific research showing that thimerosol caused neurodevelopmental delays, and MMR causing thrombocytopenia, orchitis, seizures, and many other problems, Kemper refuses to budge on her pro vaccine stance. I believe her experience with public health has enforced her belief that vaccines be inflicted on all despite their complications. Other than this fundamental disagreement with the author, I liked the book.
Guide to avoiding the doctors office.......2005-03-24
I got the first edition of this book nearly 5 years ago when my first born was an infant. It has been incredibly useful for avoiding the doctor - who usually can't really help anyway, or wants to prescribe antibiotics too frequently. Children often run the risk of getting something even worse than what they have by a visit to the doctor's office. This book is a guide for what to do with certain situations. It helped me to make my children more comfortable while a virus ran its course. This book gave me confidence to know that I was doing that best thing for my kids and gave guidelines for when to go to the doctor.
I have two kids - 5 and 2 - who have NEVER had the need to take antibiotics. I give this book a lot of credit for the my healthy kids.
Lacks balance.......2004-01-16
The heading states that this book is a comprehensive guide for safe and effective therapies for childhood illnesses, though it is seriously lacking. Kemper has no experience with homeopathy so she just gives us the usual "it doesn't work" jibe.
Does she even know that Homeopathy successfully cured thousands in epidemics of the past? Did she even do research on the studies that she quotes in this book? Most studies done on homeopathic remedies by the allopathic community are seriously flawed - no homeopath even in attendance.
Then she goes on to validate the use of antibiotics for just about everything, does she not know that antibiotics have been seriously over prescribed for decades and that this is why we are seeing resistant bacterial diseases?
It's easy to see where she is coming from.
I recommend doing a full check on the author before buying any book on childrens health.
Best ever.......2002-10-26
I thought the first edition was terrific. But the newest one is even better. This books contains BOTH mainstream and complementary therapies -- all the latest studies. It's easy to read, and yet my pediatrician said SHE learned new facts from it. MUST HAVE on any parent's bookshelf.
really helpful.......2002-08-12
Dr. Kemper is truly a help to all young parents with questions about their child's health.
Book Description
Parents want to provide the safest, most effective care for their children by knowing about all their choices, not just one or two approaches. Different kinds of practitioners have different theories, rely on different treatments, and often compete rather than cooperate with one another. Rather than being therapy-centered, polarized and competitive, healing can be child-centered, integrated, cooperative and holistic. The Holistic Pediatrician was written to educate and empower parents to exercise their options in taking care of their children's health-care needs.
This is the only truly comprehensive and holistic book on childhood ailments written for parents by a pediatrician. Based on scientific evidence, not tradition or theory, The Holistic Pediatrician combines the best traditional and alternative therapies for the most common childhood ailments. Parents who want to know what's really going on and why recommendations are made by their doctors will have their questions answered in depth without being inundated with information about illnesses they are unlikely to encounter, nor besieged with technical medical jargon.
Based on sound, scientific evidence that covers territory usually ignored in medical school, The Holistic Pediatrician is sure to be indispensable for parents and caregivers concerned with all aspects of their child's health.

Others may be missing the point.......2006-06-05
I write this primarily in response to other contributors on the website who apparently have missed the point of this book.
Dr. Kemper is an MD, MPH trained in traditional "allopathic" or "Western" medicine. She also happens to be one of the most widely published and reputable of researchers in the U.S. who have attempted to address the lack of scientific knowledge regarding complementary medicine therapies and techniques in pediatrics. The aim of her work is simply to inform people who take care of children (parents and providers) of what the state of evidence is regarding different interventions for common pediatric conditions.
To that end, the comments of "there is no evidence regarding the use of (therapy X) for (condition Y)" is just a matter of stating the facts..there are no rigorous scientific studies to support or refute the claims that the therapy works. In contrast, there are times where she states there is reliable scientific evidence to support the use of specific treatments or recommend against others. I don't see where this becomes an "us vs. them" type of discussion as suggested by other readers who insinuate there is some sort of antagonistic relationship between traditional and non-traditional providers (after all, isn't it that everyone is trying to look out for the child's benefit?).
As a parent, the hardest thing to assess when making choices about your child's health is the quality of the recommendations you are being provided. I certainly appreciate someone who has studied the subject and can comfortably say "we simply don't have good science to say whether this works." I also appreciate some the insight into potential side effects of "complementary or alternative" therapies which are generally minimized in discussion in the public forum as the default assumption is that they are always safe (which they apparently aren't). Again, absence of evidence does not mean absence of efficacy, but I may not choose that route if there is another more proven route of treatment (especially if it costs a lot of money out of pocket).
The only disappointments of the book are that Dr. Kemper makes it clear that there is clearly a lot more that needs to be learned and studied rigorously to weed out those remedies which are folkloric and ineffective versus those which have true benefit. I know that institutions like Harvard and the NIH have put a lot of money into investigating complementary medicine. Since this edition was done a few years ago, I would presume that an update of the current state of information is probably
in order.
Want holistic- dont bother with this then.......2004-01-26
I was fascinated by the title "Holistic" but was suprised that this doctor has little experience with it. The treatments that could really improve a childs health she doesn't want you to think about, let alone try.
It's just typical stuff that tells you to go to the "doctor". Isn't that how the child got sick in the first place?
Want holistic? There are many wonderful books on natural alternatives and child healthcare, this book ended up in the trash. It's not even worth re-listing.
bailed out.......2002-12-12
I bought this book based on the title, then returned it after browsing thru it. The author does a good job of covering herself from lawsuits in this book and not much else She does not recommend any holistic treatments except prayer and loving touch - where you can't go wrong - I am a holistic practitioner and I think her book is ridiculous
FANTASTIC REFERENCE - Great for adult health, too.......2002-07-26
This is the best book I've ever seen on kids' health problems. And the advice is sensible, practical and thrifty.
Adults can benefit from the information on asthma, colds, and other conditions covered here, too.
I took this book to my doctor, and he was impressed with all the references. He said he'd heard Dr. Kemper speak at a national conference and knew she was from Harvard, so he trusted her advice.
I do, too. Can't wait for the 2nd edition!
Your mainstream doc will LOVE this book..........2002-04-19
Based on one of the subtitles of this book, "Integrating the Best of Modern Medical Science with Proven Therapies from Herbal Medicines, Homeopathy and Other Healing Techniques", I was quite eager to get a copy for my parenting library. What a huge disappointment to discover that Dr. Kemper is more concerned with protecting her reputation as a pediatrician than in supporting truly holistic methods of healing.
Nearly every alternative suggestion is prefaced with, "there are NO studies evaluating the effectiveness of..." or, "there are NO scientific studies evaluating herbs as treatment for...", etc.
You'll also find statements that keep her from being responsible for recommendations of herbal or other alternative treatments with wording like, "some parents swear by using..." or, "many mothers believe...", and then always finished with another disclaimer that "there are NO scientific studies evaluating...blah blah blah."
I was also disappointed to see that she does not even mention breastmilk as an ideal and economical treatment for conjunctivitis/pinkeye but instead highlights a handy dandy listing of recommended products such as Phenylephrine, Tetrahydrozyline, Naphazoline and Oxymetazoline.
The whole book is tinged with her underlying attitude that mainstream modern medicine is really the best option and the clear feeling that she does not wish to be held liable for anything should one choose to use something besides antibiotics, steroids and vaccines.
This author is obviously pro-vaccine and pro-mainstream medicine.
The bottom line: this book emphasizes conventional medicine, vaccination and pharmaceuticals. It also seems to have been co-authored by a defense attorney. For a much more comprehensive and helpful guide to holistic pediatrics, do yourself a huge favor and check out the excellent, "Your Vital Child" or "Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child".

Great Book ... Great Restaurant.......2004-11-21
I have cooked many dishes from this cook book. They were all easy and the food was delicious. In addition, the instructions are clear and the graphics are great. By all means, dine at the River Cafe in London if you get the chance.
Same as R&G Italian Country.......2004-05-11
Be aware that this book is exactly the same as Rogers and Gray Italian Country, also published Random House.
The cover is different and the name is different, but the books (including the formatting) are exactly the same.
Living with a new gourmet chef - and loving it!.......2002-01-12
My fiance got this cookbook for Christmas, and has already made four recipes from it - all of which turned out perfectly! He's generally one to "test" new recipes on me before making them for friends, but these were all spectacular on the first try. Especially wonderful so far has been the risotto with butternut squash and the ravioli stuffing with butternut squash and mascarpone cheese. Absolutely amazing. When you can make cooking fun, it's definitely a triumph - and Rogers & Gray have completely succeeded in that respect. BENE!!
Totally satisfied.......2001-09-17
Fabulous, concise, expansive, enjoyable! Rogers and gray make it possible for my friends to think I am a kitchen God!!!
i'm a total fan.......2001-01-09
My boyfriend and I are good cooks and food mavens who nonetheless don't cook a lot. We know from great food and the recipes in this book are superb. In no other book have I ever found recipes which consistently yielded such high--i.e., restaurant-quality--results. Another great thing is the fact that many of these recipes don't require a lot of expensive/hard-to-find ingredients. We cooked out of this cookbook and its sequel, these two books alone, for a year and a half. Then we visited the restaurant in London, which is sublime--but that is another story.

Customer Reviews:
It does not deliver much of what the title seems to promise........2004-05-16
The author says she plans another edition of this book to be published in 2004. I hope so, as this volume is seriously out of date just 18 months after being printed. In only one or two of the 15 towns or cities she mentions are there more than 3 to 5 houses for sale at an asking price of less than $150K, as revealed by looking up single family houses for sale on www.realtor.com . The average asking prices in some of these towns are now $250K to $400K.
There is very little help here about the different locations. There is some interesting history, but that is about all that it good about it. There is not much advice on how to buy a house, how to buy a property for a bargain price, or any other topic about buying a home, such as negotiation, borrowing money, etc. In short, other than the list of towns and cities, there is very little in the book to help a person do what the title says.
If the author does come out with a new edition this year, she may have to change the title to finding a house for under $200,000.
A disappointing book.

An Indispensable Guide.......2003-11-10
For the prospective California homebuyer--looking for a home at an affordable price--Louise Lacey's "Find a California Home for 150,000 Or Less" is an indispensable guide. Not only does Lacey show us where you can still find a reasonably priced home in the Golden State, she also looks at the quality of life that can be found in the various towns presented in the book in terms of quality of education, job opportunities, crime rates and, most importantly, the character of the town.
In the book's introduction, Lacey--a long time Bay Area resident and freelance writer--describes what prompted her to embark upon this quest to seek out the best and most affordable California homes, namely the upward spiraling inflation rate she fell prey to in the mid 90's, where over a five year period her rent increased by a staggering 300%. Thus Lacey set out on a journey of necessity, driving across the state in her trusty pickup, searching for small towns along the way where one could swing a deal on a home for a decent price.
Along the way, Lacey met and fell in love with a series of small California towns, and the people who live there. She describes what its like to live in these towns, and how their varied and colorful histories have shaped them.
If you're home hunting in California, don't start your own journey without "Find a California Home for 150,000 Or Less".

Horrible Editing.......2007-05-14
This book suffers from shameful editing. I should say NO EDITING. What this POD publisher did was download the text from an online source, set the text in garamond, and then they printed it sans proper footnote placement, sans the musical notations, sans any sense of attractive page design. Buy the Dover edition of this book: Beethoven's Letters. DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE!

Book Description
Founded in Eastern Europe in the eighteenth century, the Hasidic movement and its religious thinking have dramatically transformed modern Judaism. The figure of the Ba'al Shem Tov (known in acronym form as the BeSHT)--the purported founder of the Hasidic movement--has fascinated scholars, Jewish philosophers, and laypeople interested in popular Jewish mysticism in general and the contemporary Hasidic movement in all its variety.
In this volume, Etkes enters a rich and heated debate over the origins of the movement, as well as the historicity of its mythic founder, Rabbi Israel Ba'al Shem Tov, who lived much of his life as a miracle worker. The eighteenth century, as Etkes vividly portrays, was the heyday of the kabbalists, who dabbled in the magical power of letters and words to solve personal and communal problems--and to earn a living. Etkes sheds light on the personality of the Besht, on his mysticism, and on his close circle of followers. But equally important, he challenges the popular myth of the Besht as a childlike mystic, wandering the fields in prayer, seeing visions and engaging in acts of godliness and piety. Although Etkes shows great empathy for his subject, the Besht who emerges in these pages is much more down to earth, much more a man of his times. Indeed, according to Etkes, it was never the intention of the Besht to found a religious movement.
Etkes looks at the Besht's mystical roots, examining him not only from the vantage point of a social historian, but as a religious figure. Moshe Rosman, author of Founder of Hasidism, a biography of the Besht, claims that In Praise of the Besht--a volume published about the Besht in 1814, many years after his death, which portrayed his character by means of stories told by his close followers--could not be a reliable source. Etkes, disputing this claim, shows definitively that this well-known text (translated and interpreted by, among others, Martin Buber) may indeed offer trustworthy accounts of the Besht's life and thinking.
