Even if you disagree, still a compelling read.......2007-09-27

I initially read this book because, as a Catholic, I wanted to understand why someone would convert to Judaism. Although the author didn't convince me to do the same, I understand his reasons for doing so. My impression from reading the book was that the author felt as though he could not create change within the Church and needed to leave for that reason.

This was a fascinating look at the Church before and after Vatican II. If you are interested in how it appeared `on the ground' from a priest's point of view, this book provides a valuable history lesson. If you are interested in the "Jew by Choice" aspect of the book, you need to realize that it will take considerable reading to reach that point in the book! (It's covered in the last two sections of the book.)

I think the author must have had a terrific memory or kept a journal throughout his many years of his priesthood/conversion, because his vivid descriptions of early Church life, seminary, encounter sessions, etc. were riveting. I really enjoyed reading this book even though I disagreed with it.

The Missouri Side of the Story.......2006-08-16

Quantrill is often maligned as a psychopathic killer and a despotic guerilla. John McCorkle not only refutes this common claim by the writers of the winner's history, but shows that Quantrill was a compassionate and honorable man. He shows a side to the War of Northern Aggression that is rarely told.

The introductions decry the author's side of the story, but they provide no evidence that is substantiated. The factual errors that McCorkle relates can easily be relegated to the fact that he was in his 80's when he told his story to O.S. Barton and the ravages of time on the memory are well noted throughout history.

This book is a rare glimpse into what made the Missouri Bushwhacker, or Partisan Ranger as they were properly known, what they were. What they did, how they fought, for what and whom they fought: it's all in here and with a lively color that brings to life the way life was in those most trying of times.

Outstanding but for the short commentary.......2006-02-19

I Highly recommend McCorkles first-hand account. It is not often that we can resolve much of the differing views of history with first-hand accounts by those that were there during most of the events. I would have given this book a five had it not been for the very "out-of-place" commentary at the front of the book by someone named Hattaway (of West Point New York). I taped the aprox 25 pages together with an adivosry to skip this section as it only appeared to be added to censor McCorkles account and done in very poor taste. Why would someone want to take the time to distort someone's personal account of history. The Introduction by Barton is done very well however. Why would the publisher think that a commentary should be added when the work already had an introduction? I think the Commentary might have been added after the book was submitted just to try to promulgate a pre-conceived notion of history. Skip the commentary and its a great short work.

WISH WE HAD MORE LIKE THIS ONE.......2004-08-28

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Any interested individual or serious student of this era must read this book. I am fortunate enough to live in the present day setting where the author's story took place. This is the real thing. I only wish there had been more works of this quality produced and saved. We would have a much better insight to those times.

Three Years With Quantrill.......2001-12-05

Although I don't like giving a 5 star rating to any book this book deserves 6! This is the real stuff, pre WWII, pre WWI, PRE-TV! It was written at a time before historic brainwashing by movies and television existed. Before people were self conscious about telling the truth. We can see the actual format of the "Civil" War sentiments. He reveals the concepts of dying, of The North, Slavery, and other aspects of the era that we are usually forced to accept from modern day writings, reflecting only current, politically correct viewpoints. The down to earth flow of this book is very enjoyable and is great reading for anyone with interest in this subject matter.

Excellent firsthand information.......1999-04-17

If you are looking for truth about what happened in Missouri during the War betwen the states this book is for you. The best way to learn what really happened is to read firsthand accounts and that's what this book offers. No one sided historical author can screwup or argue with accurate eyewitness reports. This book records the pure hard facts.

His role approximated Europe's absolutist rulers of the transitional period between feudalism and capitalism. Like his Western counterparts, Haile Sellassie introduced a standing army, a permanent bureaucracy, new forms of taxation, uniform laws, and the mechanisms of a national economy. He also came to control the landed aristocracy, whose authority he redefined and whose functions he redirected to strengthen his increasingly centralized state. The emperor supported his programs through more efficient exploitation of the existing modes of agricultural production, in whose interstices merchant capitalism grew in cooperation with the ruling elites. Even though the Ethiopian absolutist social formation anticipated a more advanced method of production, it contained elements of social organization that characterized earlier centralized empires.

As had the Egyptian pharaoh, the Chinese emperor, and the Persian king of kings, Haile Sellassie constructed a bureaucracy in which talent, skill, achievement, and, above all, loyalty to the ruler counted more than ethnic or social origins. The emperor's men ensured that the crown received a continuous flow of resources to maintain the machinery of royal and bureaucratic authority. Together with their patron, "they strove to concentrate in their own hands, the main centers of power and control in the country"; they codified and unified law, regularized revenue collection, and standardized administrative practices. The bureaucrats also helped to portray the ruler as the heir to ancient cultural traditions, whose importance would be strengthened through his governance. The king and his men fostered belief in ancient prescriptions through educational, cultural, and religious institutions. Uninterested in any new and secular legitimation base his authority on traditional or charismatic themes and on the mystification surrounding the monarchy. As this study reveals, Haile Sellassie built a bureaucratic, absolutist monarchy that related to the world capitalist economy. Yet, however much such an abstraction helps us to understand the complexities of a period of long personal rule, it would have meant little to the emperor himself, involved as he was in the daily business of power and authority. Haile Sellassie viewed himself as the embodiment of Ethiopia's proud sovereignty and independence. His national vision derived from his early experiences as heir of Ras Makonnen, a military ruler whose army kept order and whose officers constituted an oligarchy that exploited a polyglot, non-Christian population. Haile Sellassie naturally regarded this political order as normal and in the best interests of Ethiopia's peoples. He governed, as had his immediate predecessors, by acting as the country's balancer of power, a method that worked well in a customary government that mediated between the ruling classes and the masses. His limited Western education directed him toward change, however, and he introduced modern institutions whose functions he never clearly understood. He found them useful, however, because they added to imperial power and to the authority of the central government that acted in the emperor's name. Haile Sellassie always worked behind the scenes, manipulating actors and events to his advantage. His political goals were obvious, even if his tactics were concealed. He was always involved, though always proclaiming his innocence, his inaction, his isolation from events. He never admitted his nature as a politician but posed as a tool of fate, ready to do God's will or the will of the people. His apparent noninvolvement in politics only underscores the obscurity in which he maneuvered; the emperor's deft hand was invariably apparent in retrospect, and his careful planning became as obvious a success. He was such a good actor, however , that even thoughtful persons never understood the Haile Sellassie was able to educate a cadre of "Young Ethiopians" to strengthen the central government, to transform Addis Ababa, his ramshackle capital, into a leading city, and to begin securing Ethiopia's frontiers from encroachment by adjacent colonial powers. Ever jealous of his country's sovereignty and independence, the emperor also directed Ethiopia's trade and other activities away from its traditional European partners toward Japan and America, both of whom he believed supported his country's independence. By so doing, he robbed France of a good economic reason to protect Ethiopia from Italy; he alienated Great Britain; and he permitted Italy to contemplate his nation's conquest. Mussolini regarded Ethiopia's progress, especially after 1928, when Haile Sellassie gained indisputable power, as potentially threatening Somalia and Eritrea and as marking Italy's failure to transform the Solomonic Empire into a roman colony. During 1930-1932, domestic political considerations drove him to consider an attack on Ethiopia, and by 1934-1935, the European situation permitted the aggression. By then, Ethiopia was without allies and without the means to counter the Fascists. Haile Sellassie learned, as would other leaders, that collective security was the opiate of small, defenseless countries. Although the emperor would suffer defeat, despair, and exile, he would return in 1941, as a phoenix, to restore the status quo ante.

If you like lists, you'll love this book.......2005-06-24

Seven years ago we decided to build a house. I had never, ever heard one person who thought doing so was a good idea. I know the authors of this book seem hooked on horror stories, but it's all to the good because it's all true. In fact, by using the book's suggestions, we not only built a wonderful house, but our builder brought it in at $17,000 under budget. We've lived in the house for seven years and I've recommended this book to countless people. Don't know if it's been updated since I read it and things do change, but if you're a novice at homebuilding and don't want to be taken, this book should be number one on your reading and USING list.

I read three books: Cellers to Ceilings, Build It Right, and Your New House. All were good, but Your New House was by far the best of the three. Your New House was very thorough with information from beginning to end in building (and buying) a new home. Lots of information to protect the consumer and includes websites for additional information and products. Highly recommended reading!

Good Book...All questions were not answered.......2004-03-07

I am a first time buyer and wanted to make sure that I was getting the best deal at every end of the process. I read this book and although many parts of it were good, it did not apply to my situation. This book is excellent for those that are building a custom built home with a builder. If you are looking to buy a production home (centex, KB, pulte) this is not the book you will want. I found some of the examples to be informative, but overall I will need another book to answer my questions. I hope my review helped.

This is the single best homebuying book we've found. The section on binding arbitration clauses alone is worth the price of the book. Concise, sensible, at times overly cautious -- this book is a necessary skeptical foil to overenthusiastic homebuyers who may be getting themselves into a rotten home or rotten purchase agreement. No, it's not perfect. I'm sure some of the technical information is incorrect. All homebuying books suffer this problem. But the 1-star reviews of this book are inconceivable. Perhaps they were written by shady builders or sellers who are upset that this book is scaring away unwary buyers?

I recently purchased a new home with my husband. After having problems with our new house in several areas, I decided that for the collge speech class I was taking that I would choose the topic of "researching before you buy a new home." This book was among the five books that I purchased on this subject. It was by far the most helpful and easiest to understand. I will be using it as a Bible the next time we are looking at new houses.

Keep in mind that there are better books if you need mortgage or real estate document information. However, this book was the best for giving you information how how to choose your house and neighborhood.

In 1912, the village of Cape Wolstenholme, on Hudson Bay, was the northernmost edge of the North American frontier. It was there during a hunting expedition that Robert Flaherty, an American-born prospector and a pioneer filmmaker, chanced to see the landing of an overcrowded, leaking, sealskin-and-whalebone vessel. This improvised contraption, kept afloat by inflated seal bladders, held an Inuit hunter named Comock, his wife, their eleven children, and two dogs.

Ten years earlier, Comock and his family had crossed the Hudson Bay s ice floes in search of a fabled island rich in caribou, walruses, and seals. They found their promised land Mansel Island, sixty miles west of Cape Wolstenholme but lost their bearings and most of their belongings en route. Although they were the island s only human inhabitants, the family, thanks to Comock s skill as a hunter, not only survived but thrived in one of the world's harshest environments. A full decade later, they returned to tell their incredible tale.

With all the skill of the great documentary filmmaker he would later become, Flaherty recorded Comock s story and here retells it in the hunter s own voice. A classic of oral literature, a kind of real-life Eskimo folk tale of cunning, ingenuity, and daring, Comock was originally published to critical acclaim in 1968. This beautiful new large-format edition includes many Inuit drawings collected by Flaherty, several sections of previously omitted text, and a new epilogue by the noted anthropologist Edmund Carpenter. The book has also been enhanced by tri-tone reproductions of forty-six Flaherty photographs, images reminiscent of stills from his great silent film Nanook of the North.
