5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2006-06-26

I found this book very helpful in making my transition to a SAHM. I especialy like the section on cleaning and making your house run smoothly with little effort.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended in conjunction with Miserly Moms.......2004-02-25

What I liked best about this book:

1. The chapter on contingency plans. Yes, it's obvious that it's a good idea to have a backup-plan in case the working parent gets laid off, there's a large unexpected expense, etc. Nevertheless, I found it helpful to read the authors' experiences regarding such emergencies which happened in their families and to consider the various ideas and options presented. My own contingency plan was that I worked fifteen months longer than I wanted to and progressively worked up to putting my entire paycheck in savings; by the time I quit, we had enough money set aside to pay our living expenses for an entire year, if that became necessary.

2. The chapter on stay-at-home blues. I appreciated the authors' candor in describing the pros and cons of staying home. A humorous (but true) example they give is that you won't necessarily fall in love with cleaning the bathroom and once home, you may do it more often than you did before. Most importantly, they're honest about the feeling of isolation that can creep up on a stay-at-home parent and how one can deal with it.

3. They "tell it like it is". As they say, unless one of the parents' incomes is completely disposable, it is going to be necessary to make some sacrifices somewhere. Something will have to go in order to keep the family's financial boat afloat. My family experienced this period of adjustment while saving for our emergency fund; by the time I left work, we were already used to managing on one income and it wasn't so difficult.

I address the chapters on the "cons" of staying home specifically because if most people pick up a book like this in the first place, it's probably because they already want to be home with their child(ren). What they want to know is how to achieve that goal and what to expect along the way. I found this book a terrific primer on how to get off the fast track in the smoothest possible manner.

The reason I recommended this book in conjunction with Miserly Moms by Jonni McCoy is that I feel the latter book presents a larger share of nuts-and-bolts information on how to reduce expenses. Jonni McCoy once worked as a senior buyer for Apple Computers, among other firms, and you can see this real-world experience in how she analyzes and approaches the issue of frugality.

5 out of 5 stars Great Advice for Moms Weighing the Stay At Home Option.......2002-08-16

I really liked this book because it gave practical advice that seemed realistic and was supported by personal stories and testimonials.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing new - save your money.......2002-03-01

The title of this book caused me to snatch it off the shelf. I'm just glad it was a library shelf rather than a bookstore shelf.
I found the information extremely obvious and learned very little.
Basically, if you want to stay home, cut the extras. If you buy a... coffee, pastry, eat out and shop every day, well, then, cut it out. And if you normally buy convenience foods at the grocery, get a manicure every week and buy expensive clothes, then stop. That's the basic summary of the book.
I have already made these obvious cuts, as well as counting in work-related costs such as transporation, dry cleaning, etc., so it taught me absolutely nothing new...

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2001-12-29

Great ideas.
The writers are not pushy about anyone becoming a stay at home parent.
They are not unbiased (staying home with your kids is best for them) but they stay as well balanced as possible.
This book is helping make it possible for my HUSBAND to stay home with our 4 kids !!!
We love it!!

      Book Description

Equipped with his guitar, some video cameras, and a few friends, musician Michael Franti set off for Iraq, Palestine, and Israel to experience the human cost of war firsthand. With eloquence and wit, I KNOW I'M NOT ALONE takes us to three war zones to experience the horror, humanity, and resilience he witnessed. Like his documentary of the same name, his book offers a raw and intimate sense of travel, filled with the voices of everyday people living, creating, and surviving in the harsh conditions of war.

            Book Description

MAGIC In life there are two options, fear or faith, you choose. To get where you can distinguish between the two, is your life. Choosing what is right for you over what is convenient for others, to stand for yourself, to not be pushed from the mountain, to represent your Father and say no to the world. To achieve peace in your heart and mind, to love with passion, to cry without regret, to laugh with joy, to explore, to taste, to be bold. To hold on with all your will and know that we are one with God. To challenge you with love and say, all that there is, is one. So that you may proudly proclaim, I am not alone. When I decided to write this book I dreamt it had 38 chapters. I did not know why until now. Three plus eight is eleven and in numerology, this is the number of the teacher. My personal number is eleven so I now know this book was to be. When I started to write I had decided to include a chapter on meditation and when I finished the book it did not. I did not number the chapters because I knew I would stop at thirty eight so I wrote as the spirit guided me and when the book was completed, I went through and numbered them all, a total of 37 chapters. It did not contain my chapter on meditation. I was so excited that this book has been guided by Gods hand. Thank you God.

Altruism isn't the only objective of the US State Department as it sends Peace Corps Volunteers around the world. The USA wants international trade and political alliances.

Targill hammers home some difficult lessons of life in the developing world and the roles of governments and big business that keep masses of people poor and powerless. He tells his story quickly and to the point.

It's an important perspective, especially for those of us inclined to romanticize life. We can learn and act from a stronger base if we combine "street smarts" with heartfelt service. This reader urges those interested in international development not to back away from these lessons but incorporate them as practical knowledge.

                        Book Description

The apprehension of society as an aggregation of self-interested individuals is a dominant modern concern, but one first systematically articulated during the Enlightenment. This book approaches this problem from the perspective of the challenge offered to inherited traditions of morality and social understanding by Bernard Mandeville, whose infamous paradoxical maxim "private vices, public benefits" profoundly disturbed his contemporaries, while his The Fable of the Bees had a decisive influence on David Hume, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Adam Smith and Immanuel Kant. Professor Hundert examines the sources and strategies of Mandeville's science of human nature and the role of his ideas in shaping eighteenth century economic, social and moral theories.

                            Book Description

Fuguitt and Wilcox skillfully guide analysts, public sector managers, and students of decision-making through a full range of the essential steps to perform, interpret, and assess cost-benefit analysis. Their book shows how to grasp the principles of cost-benefit analysis and several related economic valuation methods, how to apply them in undertaking an objective analysis, and how to use the analysis as a decision-making tool across a wide range of fields and applications. An extensive knowledge of economic theory, calculus or advanced graphical analysis is not needed to understand the principles or techniques. Accessible to those who understand basic algebra and have a beginner's hold on statistics, the book also provides a bridge to the more advanced literature in economics and to other analyses used to perform sophisticated valuations. A unique, much-needed presentation of all that is required to gain an immediate, useful understanding of the topic. The authors explain basic economic concepts and show how they are relevant to understanding an analytical approach. They enumerate principles and detail such technical components as "with and without" analysis, discounting, decision criteria and uncertainty assessment. The book provides especially extensive coverage of the contingent valuation method along with market valuation, the travel cost and property value methods, human life valuation, and cost-effectiveness analysis. They explain empirical methods used to perform these valuation techniques and cover survey and regression analysis as well. Most importantly, Fuguitt and Wilcox treat the topic within its real-world context--as a decision-making tool to assess a particular policy's efficiency and to provide the decision maker with necessary information. Trade-offs between efficiency and other policy objectives are also addressed, as is the interdisciplinary setting within which cost-benefit analysis is interpreted, enabling readers to understand that policy advocates and adversaries bring their own values and competing interests to bear on any decision-making process.

"This paper provides a comparative analysis of school-based management reforms in four Central American countries (EDUCO in El Salvador, PRONADE in Guatemala, PROHECO in Honduras, and Centros Autonomos in Nicaragua). It starts by providing a characterization of the models and then reviews how they have expanded community participation and empowerment and school decisionmaking autonomy. It then continues by analyzing the impact of community and school empowerment on the teaching-learning process, including measures of teacher effort. The paper assesses the impact of the models on several educational outcomes, relating this impact with the teaching-learning environment and community empowerment. Finally, the paper attempts to explain the impact of the reforms by discussing how variations in reform design, country contexts and actors' assets can explain differences and similarities in result. The key conclusion of the paper is that school-based management models have led generally to greater community empowerment and teacher effort, resulting in: (a) a better use of the existing limited capacity of teachers and schools; (b) higher coverage in rural areas; (c) somewhat better student flows; and (d) learning outcomes at least as high as in traditional schools (while community-managed schools are generally established in the poorest and most isolated rural areas). A second set of key conclusions of the report is that the impact of community based schooling on student flows and learning outcomes could be greatly enhanced by a set of specific actions which largely aim at setting up the conditions for pedagogical improvement, improved management and empowerment at the local level, and sustainability of the models."

                                      Book Description

The 1990s have witnessed growing demand for learning throughout the world. Compelling incentives for individuals, economies and societies to raise education levels have driven increased participation in a widening range of learning activities by people of all ages, from the earliest years through later adulthood. Educational progress has, however, been uneven both across and within countries.

This volume sheds light on the comparative performance of education systems, with an analysis that extends to the financial and human resources invested in education, how education and learning systems operate and evolve, and the returns to educational investment. The data presented allow countries to see themselves in the light of other countries' performance and to assess whether variations in educational experiences are unique or if they mirror differences observed elsewhere.

Countries covered include Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Paraguay, the Philippines, Uruguay, the Russian Federation, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Zimbabwe, and OECD countries.

                                        Book Description

As public organizations seek ways to provide better services and products at lower costs, they are turning more and more to management analysis (MA). This, the first comprehensive guide to the field, will help analysts, managers, and administrators understand how MA can improve output, productivity, and bottom line performance. This volume explains in detail the quantitative and qualitative approaches that management analysts employ in problem solving and enumerates MA's contributions to improving organization's decision making. It also makes clear that the relationship between the analyst and administrator is a collaborative one, and that to achieve excellence each must understand the other's methods of operation, viewpoints, and goals. Written by practicing management analysts with extensive experience who also teach MA, the book opens with a discussion of MA theory and its many applications, drawing on government regulations and the literature in the field as well as original research. The authors' discussion of the history and development of MA, including current trends, helps the reader understand the nature and direction of the field. The volume also treats the core areas of the practicing management analyst including organization structure, management studies, computers and automation, and productivity, as well as emerging specialities such as policy analysis, program evaluation, and rigorous analytical studies. Because of the growing market for management analysis in private and public sectors, one chapter is devoted to MA services provided by private firms. The realistic approach resulting from the authors' experiences as analysts is supplemented by original empirical research on the conduct and acceptance of studies and evaluations for management, as well as annotated and selected bibliographies. With its focus on the future of MA, the book will be useful not only to other analysts and their clients, but also to the students and teachers of public administration.

                                            Book Description

In recent years many countries have experimented with extending the role of market forces in their state schooling systems. These changes have often produced fierce debates about their rationale and consequences, not least because of their origins in a specific political and economic philosophy. The basis of this philosophy is economic liberalism: a belief in the efficiency of the market as a rationing and allocative mechanism. This book examines the appropriateness of this belief for schooling markets.

Unlike some other reviewers, I found this book to be highly readable and very informative. I think Bright does a great job getting into Gabriel's motivations and interests and this makes for a very good biography.

Gabriel has so many interests outside of his own music and it's especially nice to get these viewpoints in the biography. He is involved in human rights, world music, multimedia, alternative health, and psychological therapies. These other interests do tell you more about the man than just a standard "Gabriel-released-this-album-and-toured" work.

The only complaint I have is about the some of the extremely long chapters. The book could be logically broken in better places to make keeping your place easier!

2 out of 5 stars For the serious and patient fan only.......2000-03-14

For years I searched store shelves in vain looking for a quality book on Peter Gabriel. When I at last looked online, I thought I had found what I needed. However, this biography reads more like a textbook than a warm or interesting biography. The author spliced the book together using available quotes and interviews, and seems to never have talked to Peter himself. And while there are many interesting tidbits, such as the fact that a schoolboy Gabriel once made a hat worn by Keith Richards of the Stones on TV, it really drags. Even I, a serious fan, found myself skipping through many sections. Worth the read? Yes. If you think of yourself as a serious fan. An enjoyable read? Not really. In fact, you may be disappointed in your hero when you learn how distant he was from his wife and family.

3 out of 5 stars more the man than the music.......1999-09-09

A welcome update to his previous work, Bright's new book still has the same positive and negative sides of the first edition. Excellent research is his finest point (he talked to people who knew the subject well and did give great insights), but the stress on all matters personal and private seems to me a bit over the top. Sure we want to know what kind of a person Peter is besides his rock-star persona, but the text doesn't always succeed in connecting this with Gabriel's musical output.

                                                  4 out of 5 stars A life that unfolds like a sunrise..........1999-07-22

This is definately the best biography about Peter Gabriel that exists. I was surprised at how intimate it was especially in a sexual way, but PG himself I believe advocates openness. So... He also appears to have endorsed this book about himself. I was glad also to come to the positive ending aswell. May happiness continue... A satisfying read all round and best piccies.

                                                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent in-depth assessment of a fascinating man!.......1999-07-19

Mr. Bright has created a work that is readable and insightful about a man whose creativity and experimentation with rock sounds and textures is extraordinary. Especially interesting to this reader are the artist's own explanations of his lyrics, which are sometimes obscure (deliberately) but always interesting. Mr. Gabriel doesn't talk down to his listeners; he has matured and assumes we are maturing along with him. A definite must-read for anyone who is a fan of this long-term rock legend.
