Soldier, Statesman, Peacemaker: Leadership Lessons From George C. Marshall
ASIN: 0801858143 |
Book Description
George C. Marshall served as chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff during World War II and as secretary of state during the rebuilding of Europe. A master of mobilization and organization, he did as much as any national leader in achieving Allied victory in the war; afterward, as architect of the Marshall Plan, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for that massive and highly effective effort on behalf of Western European economic recovery. Winston Churchill called him "the noblest Roman of them all."
This colorful collection of Marshal portraiture and memorabilia commemorates and humanizes this giant of a man, about whom comparatively little beyond his career achievements is known. The book will accompany an exhibit on Marshall that will open at the National Portrait Gallery in November 1997.
"He was certainly no flamboyant general, he was not a character, there were no pearl-handled revolvers or corncob pipes of crusty anecdotes to spice up the legend of Marshall. He never wrote a book to tell his story. He never ran for election to public office. He never sought popularity. He never exploited his fame. He never asked for recognition or favors. He was a man driven more than anything else by a sense of duty, by the powerful, overpowering obligation of service. To him, it was never George C. Marshall that was important; it was the task at hand." -- Colin Powell

Book Description
At the turn of the twentieth century, the forty-five states that constituted the United States of America were on the brink of change. No longer a second-rate nation behind the old European countries, America was emerging from its Wild West frontier days, becoming a major commercial power and military force. For the majority of the century, the United States would be the world's dominant nation.
In many respects, what defined the American Century was the work of George C. Marshall. Though he shunned publicity and self-promotion, seeking instead to do his job quietly and well, he was twice selected as Time magazine's Man of the Year, stood at the top of the U.S. Army, and won a Nobel Peace Prize for the Marshall Plan. Marshall prided himself on his lack of emotion and, unlike his protégé, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Marshall never had any desire to be presidentthough others lobbied him to be a candidate. His careful command in World War II made Marshall a leading force in transforming the United States into the reigning world power. Later, Marshall served as Secretary of State during the Berlin Airlift and then served as Secretary of Defense during the Korean War.
It was all quite a lot for a boy who was a mediocre student, and whose brother feared he would disgrace the family name when he went away to military school. Fighting Wars, Planning for Peace: The Story of George C. Marshall showcases the incredible accomplishments of the modest man who shaped a world at warand at peace.

Highly useful insights about wars, peace, and leadership.......2005-11-24
This book is worth buying. It's packed full of information, yet uses simple explanations and includes amusing touches, making it easy and enjoyable to follow. Detailing the chronological path of Marshall's life and work, Gimpel provides insight not just into what Marshall accomplished but also how he grew as a person. This allows readers to learn or brush up on the last century's history while feeling like part of Marshall's quest to make the right choices for himself and his country. Both younger and older readers will likely find themselves inspired by Marshall's persistence in the face of obstacles, his assertiveness in making the most of opportunities, his adaptability when he gets what he wants but finds it different than expected, and his forthright and humble character.
Gimpel provides a solid overview of the progression of 20th century history, including descriptions of many other great leaders of that time. The sections about WW II and the Marshall Plan are particularly good. I imagine that any reader would see the relevance of Marshall's strategies to present-day international affairs.
Truman said of George C. Marshall: "He was the greatest of the great of our time." After reading this book, you'll know why.
Great for teens--Relevant, interesting, easy read for adults.......2005-10-18
A teenage friend lent me this book on Marshall and recommended that I read it. I haven't read a history book since college and have never been interested in biographies of military heroes, but I read it anyway. It was great! I found myself incredibly impressed with Marshall's leadership skills at a young age and his patience, persistence and humility as a leader, diplomat and outstanding human being who really valued peace. I unexpectedly found myself caught up in the historical events that now have so much more meaning to me. The examples of his leadership and the challenges he faced are so completely relevant for our current issues that I found myself wondering how Marshall would lead us through the global and national issues we face today. It's definitely on my holiday shopping list for other young readers I know and for friends who would appreciate a good modern history book that is well written and a quick and easy read.
Nearly 200 pages of details about a man who shunned publicity yet was twice selected as Time magazine's Man of the Year.......2005-10-03
Lee Gimpel's Fighting Wars Plannign For Peace: The Story Of George C. Marshall packs in nearly 200 pages of details about a man who shunned publicity yet was twice selected as Time magazine's Man of the Year, and who won a Nobel Peace Prize. Marshall never had any desire to rise in politics: his World War II command led the country into becoming a reigning world power, leading the struggle for peace.
Best book on Marshall!.......2005-08-25
A fascinating man and a remarkably well constructed novel, this is a must read. The story invites you into Marshall's life and you will quickly be taken aback by his strength of character and determination. I don't often take the time to write reviews, but after finishing this book I was so impressed I wanted others to experience it for themselves.
Character Shaping .......2005-08-24
George C. Marshall's approach to his life will serve as a model to every student with regard to purpose and the shaping of a man that resulted in the shaping of a nation. The makings of great people lead to the ingredients necessary to continue to fight for American freedoms today, just as we did in years past. The principles remain the same, and Gimpel has done a superb job at translating Marsall's life to an easy-to-follow and digest reading that will be intriguing while educational. A great voice for a great role model in American history.

"Belongs on the shelf of classics about surviving degradation with dignity and even humor." Time
In March 1985, Terry Anderson was swept up in the violent conflict of a turbulent era. At the mercy of Shiite captors for nearly seven years, he lived in chains, wondering fearfully if each day would be his last. But his spirit soared beyond captivity, and he never gave up. Nor did those who loved him. And now, a free man again, he tells the harrowing and poignant story of a hostage's survival and final triumph.
From the Paperback edition.
Customer Reviews:
A lot of time to think.......2004-03-18
Mr. Anderson's book is a lesson on how to maintain sainity in the most horrible situations you could every be in; kidnapped and the lose of personal freedom.
This book is not a pleasant read. It is very important though in that it allows the reader, who is probably very comfortable while reading, to feel the sense of dispair that Mr. Anderson went through.
The political reasons as well as the climate in the Middle East in the 1980's is very interesting and this account allows us to see it from a totally different perspective.
Plus it has a happy ending, I highly recommend it.
What a Waste of His Life.......2002-04-18
I do not want this to sound insensitive, but the one thing I kept thinking as I was reading this book is why was he there? The U.S. government was telling U.S. citizens to leave, the Lebanese government did not care, his employer wanted him to leave, and there were increasing hostage incidents. The book his the story of his capture and the seven years he spent as a captive of this militant group. He does a good job in describing the locations he was in, the people that were his captors, and the other persons that he was with. I thought the most interesting parts of the book detailed his conversations with some of his captors and their views on the situation.
The book is a very interesting view of what happened to the author. The details are rich and he does a good job of painting the scenes for us. He also did a good job of explaining the depression of being a captive and what it is like to loss seven years of your life, although I do not think any author could truly express the emotional pain that he must have gone through. If you are interested in this part of the world or this story, this is a great book. It is also interesting given the current climate in the Middle East to read about what was happening 20 years ago.
An amazing book.......2002-02-06
Den of Lions: Memoirs of Seven Years by Terry Anderson is one of my favorite books. The book grabbed my attention and kept it. I read the book in one day. Learning of Terry Anderson's ordeal through his eyes and in his words was amazing. Having been only 4 when he was taken hostage, I did not really know much about him until he was released from Lebanon in 1991, when I was 10. I grew up watching the news with my parents and I can remember seeing his return on television.
When I decided to study journalism in college, I chose the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. When I heard that Terry Anderson was going to be joining the faculty at Scripps, I was truly excited. I read his memoirs and then had the opportunity to hear him speak about his ordeal. Having him as a professor at Scripps was a wonderful experience for all journalism students. I have the great privilege of saying that I met one of my role models and I am grateful for that.
Den of Lions: Memoirs of Seven Years is one of the best books I have ever read. It is touching and wonderfully written. It tells Terry Anderson's story in a way that only he could.
A heart pummeling hostage memoir of the Beirut crisis........1999-10-22
Terry Anderson's Den of Lions is a den of insights into the radical bi-polar terrorist mentality in which he was trapped for over seven years. His descriptions of the bombings, shootings and random daily violence that permeated around the non-citizens and the citizens of Lebanon, make this a classic Middle East hostage survivor's story. Anderson's poems of his cruel incarceration are filled with searing depth that transport you to the various scummy basement cells which he shared with other Westerners. Den of Lions and Hostage by David Jacobson go hand in hand and are important contributions in the collection of Middle East books that help those of us citizens who were not there or too young to remember, the horror that Beirut was during the eighties and early ninties. Very highly recommended!
A gripping, insightful book........1999-07-27
I am a Westerner who has lived in Lebanon for many years and yet I gleaned new knowledge of the Middle East from reading "Den of Lions". Terry Anderson is a wonderful writer, and the addition of his fiancee's thoughts and feelings adds depth of insight into the agony of hostage-taking. There are interesting looks into the interaction between hostages and into the daily frustrations of the waste, and yet somehow the not-waste, of almost seven years away from freedom of choice. This is a book that has stayed on my mind.

Customer Reviews:
Great gift from a mentor.......2006-08-23
Some people, unfortunately, never seem to develop into full-fledged human beings. They remain caricatures but can sometimes be extremely successful. Foster has crafted an interesting and compelling story about how these people interact with their world and provides some insight into their motivations. They can be dangerous, but are also very easy to spot. Sometimes winning isn't worth it, and sometimes accomplishing a goal can jeopardize something more important.
In addition to being a nice read this novel can serve to help a young professional consider their ethical/moral bearing. Foster knows real estate and loves LA and makes both inviting to the reader. I highly recommend this book to anyone starting a career in an aggressive and competitive field or to anyone who likes a good story.
A Gripping story.......2002-11-01
Riveting and compelling. I loved the suspense, drama and romance. A page-turner. Strong characters with strong motives and driving passions.
Opened up an aspect of the Real Estate world until now unknown to me, and which I found intriguing.
A must-buy.
Commercial Real estate thriller.......2002-06-04
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from cover to cover. Suspense, romance, twists in plot, ethical dilemmas, intrigue, and downright ruthless tactics by the antagonist all make this a good read.
As a 4th generation realtor, it was nice to finally read a book written by someone in the business - if you are in the business then you will have "names" for each character - people you know just like them.
If you are not in the business, you will understand what draws so many in and why they stay in this cutthroat world.
The author has obviously pored a lot of his heart and soul into the story, providing great realism and fact.
A great read, don't buy it unless you have time to read it cover to cover.
Entertaining for Anyone in a "Deal Making" Industry.......2002-06-01
The names are different but every character in Alpha Male will remind you of people and personalitites in you own life.
The pace is fast and the story intriguing. Anyone involved in sales will be able to associate with the moral and ethical challanges presented in this book.
The stirring romance will keep you in your chair; because you won't be able to stand up!
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Book (Agents- A MUST Read).......2006-04-21
I have read some of Pivar books which were textbooks for my Broker's exam. I like his organization of material, and his completeness of detail. This book is no different. I bought it essentially because Robert Bruss, a noted real estate author/investor/attorney from the SF Bay Area wrote a wonderful testimonial for it which appears on the back cover. That's all I needed to see, as he has never been wrong on book reviews. I was not disappointed. The book sets forth the various concepts of Ethics, then gives different scenarios (probably court cases, as nobody could make this stuff up). The part I thought was most interesting was the chapter on Trust Fund handling, which was very complete and informative, and think most agents would get a huge lesson from it, as it is a soft underbelly in any agent's practice. What I thought while reading it was how many agents would benefit from this book, and it should be required reading in many brokerage offices. Sadly, books on how to become wealthy agents probably exponentially outsell this one. It is a fairly quick read, and should be required by all offices for rookie agents. It covers most everything I could think of having taken many classes on ethics to get my license renewed, and various designations. If anyone reads this, I firmly believe they will be a much stronger agent.
The REALTORS Code of Ethics - simplified.......1999-07-25
This is absolutely the best real estate ethics book I have found. It clarifies for the reader each standard & article of the REALTORS Code of Ethics. There are case studies with each chapter. With easily a hundred situations to analyze and disect throughout the book, an agent or broker can probably find answers to many of the typical problems that occur in the day-to-day workings of the real estate industry. Used in a classroom situation, it helps the student understand that sometimes there is no true Black and White, but only many shades of Gray! A must read for every licensee.

Book Description
While ethical issues have been examined in conjunction with many business contexts, the area of real estate and ethics has, at best, received only minimal treatment. Given that real estate transactions represent one of the largest single expenditures by businesses and households, and recognizing that real estate holdings represent a major portion of wealth portfolios worldwide, this lack of coverage is conspicuous by its absence.
The goal of this book is to begin rectifying this situation. By offering fifteen essays addressing the central issue of ethics and real estate from a wide variety of perspectives, the contributors seek to encourage a dialogue that is lively and, at times, provocative. The authors include academics and professional practitioners, and collectively represent five countries and many diverse disciplines. Drawing from both empirical and conceptual frameworks, the chapters are divided into five main sections: 1) policy issues, 2) industry practice, 3) environmental issues, 4) ethical issues involving transactions, and 5) ethical issues involving tenants. Taken together these essays offer a challenging point of departure for considering the important interaction of ethical issues in real estate theory and practice.
Book Description
Real estate professionals are confronted every day with on-the-job dilemmas with sometimes contradictory regulations, codes of conduct, or laws that make it difficult to effectively resolve ethical conflict. Written by the acknowledged expert on real estate ethics, this new edition of a timeless real estate ethics resource will provide you with simple but real situations and the opportunity to explore and analyze ethics in your professional business. New topics include ethically handling competitors, new required disclosures, housing discrimination, and updated discussions in agency and Gallup Poll results. "How Would You Respond" questions and Case Study exercises allow for open discussion amongst a group or thoughtful reflection for independent studies. Deborah Long's use of everyday language helps real estate agents gain an increased awareness and understanding of ethical decision making as they work through the various real-life scenarios and provocative discussion questions.

Wonderful!.......2007-09-12
Nick Perito was a marvelous man, an incredible talent and a human right's activist ahead of his time. The title, "I Just Happened To Be There" is modesty personified since his musical talent and drive certainly was what caused him to cross the path of many famous people. His account of Judy Garland is wonderful and his support of Dorothy Dandridge was exceptional. It is obvious that he had great admiration for true talent. However, he is equally candid about some of those in the performing world who did not measure up.
If you enjoy recollections of past performers such as Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, etc., this is a book to read and savor. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
A Class about Class.......2005-02-10
This book is a peek into Italian culture as well as a sharing of the experiences of working with the greatest stars. With dignity and without offending anyone, it is very clear as to which Stars Nick no longer wished to work with. Nick is above trying to sensationalize slamming celebrities to help sell a book. Nick does not hide his compassion for some of the stars that had exceptional struggles as well as success.
Being an Italian American, the book helped me better understand some of my beliefs and traditions. A mixture of the Catholic faith, Italian culture, and family values somehow seem to be so similar through out the United States in all the various "little Italy" communities from the East to the West coast. It is a culture that produced outstanding artists that were enjoyed by not only people of all walks of life, but also survives generations.
This was the culture of Perry Como, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra to name the first few that come to mind. Consider that Nick not only worked with these legends but also Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, and Sammy Davis Jr. It is amazing that one man could touch and help make such beautiful music with so many truly great legends. Thanks for sharing.
A Veritable Who's Who of Show Business!.......2004-11-26
Nick Perito has accompanied, arranged, composed and conducted many of the world's most famous singers and entertainers. His career in television has earned him twelve Emmy nominations. This book offers an affectionate glimpse of his upbringing as the son of Italian immigrants and recounts his successful career in the colorful and unpredictable world of show business.
For well over 30 years, Nick Perito was Perry Como's exclusive music director on TV, concerts, and records. Nick was once known as "the king of Christmas music"; for several years in the 1970's, he was music director for the Bing Crosby, Perry Como, and Andy Williams Christmas TV specials.
Nick arranged, composed, and conducted the music for several of Bing Crosby's television shows, including three of his Christmas specials. At the dawn of the 1970's, thinking the song needed an update, Bing himself personally asked Nick to write a new arrangement of White Christmas for him, and that arrangement was used on all of the Crosby family TV specials from 1971-77.
A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, Nick has done concert, TV, and recording work with the likes of Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bob & Dolores Hope, Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme, Dorothy Dandridge, Shirley Bassey, and numerous others.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in reading behind the scenes stories about the true legends of show business. What they were really like, in and out of the spotlight. The era when stars were stars, and their talents shined brightly. It reads like a giant "who's who" of show business for the last 50 or 60 years. Everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Elvis has crossed paths with Nick Perito! You won't be disappointed.
What a wasted opportunity.......2004-11-05
What a dreadful waste of time this book is. It must have been sponsored by the Disney Channel or Hallmark cards. It is soo sugary and sweet I had a headache after reading it....and needed to bite into a lemon!!!!! It tells you nothing the PR man had not revealed about anyone. Everyone Mr. Perito knew and met was so "nice"......it seems as if he did not want to offend anyone...and in doing that has wasted his and everyones time!!!! An absolute wasted opportunity....a ghostwriter may have helped but I sadly think not!!!
