        Book Description

This biographical portrait by a well known Civil War historian brings much deserved attention to an exceptional Confederate military figure who became one of the New South's most progressive leaders.

Herman Hattaway's clear, swift narrative depicts Lee in brilliant performance at Second Manassas, Chickasaw Bayou, Nashville, and after the war as a leader who used his military skills and discipline to work in bringing prosperity and education into the defeated South.

After the war Lee established a home in Mississippi and found fulfillment in his calling to be the first president of Mississippi A & M College (today Mississippi State University), where he preached the message of applying brain power to farming. His admirers bestowed upon him the title "Father of Industrial Education in the South."

Though the significance of Stephen D. Lee was long overlooked in historical perspectives of the Civil War and the development of the New South, Hattaway's appreciative study has remedied a case of unintended neglect by previous historians.

5 out of 5 stars Following the Excellence of Nyhus' Mastery of Surgery.......2001-12-06

This is an excellent textbook of Minimally Invasive Surgical Procedures, containing eight sections of great interest to all of us, surgeons practicing both endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery.
Minimal access surgery has revolutionized and revitalized general surgery. The extent and range of minimal access surgery has been extended over the past 5 years, although a number of controversial areas remain. The reader of this outstanding textbook will learn various techniques in minimal access surgery, providing evidence of the importance of this new modality. Contemporary controversies, such as laparoendoscopic surgery for large and small bowel (including neoplastic disease), are discussed.
I encourage all general surgeons to read this book and experience the future's surgery, today!

          4 out of 5 stars Excellent reference........2001-05-04

This is a comprehensive text covering all of the evergrowing list of procedures that can be done laparoscopically. The bibliography of contributing authors is filled with established experts and the editors are well recognized as pioneers in the field of minimally invasive surgery. Each chapter is filled with useful descriptions of the various procedures and is accompanied by accurate sketches. I think everyone is usually frustrated by the appearance of actual laparoscopic pictures due to their poor quality upon reproduction, but this book has seemingly found a way to circumvent that degradation because it is filled with actual laparascopic pictures that you can identify. Each chapter is followed by helpful suggestions and comments from the editors. As a second-year resident, I have found this book very helpful in outlining the advanced laparoscopic procedures prior to actually performing the procedure in the OR. It should prove useful to all surgical residents as well as practicing surgeons looking to increase their laparoscopic repertoire.

I expected this book to be interesting, but the opposite is true. There's no plot, and the entire book is just one plaigarism after the other. A blatant disgrace to other people's work. I am insulted.

I thoroughly enjoy this book. Agnes has an easy, literate writing style, with a sense of humor about herself and her life. What I particularly enjoyed were the descriptions of the times, especially Hollywood in the late teens. She also talks about the influence of Pavlova, Marie Rambert, Martha Graham, Anthony Tudor, and of course, was around all the great theatre and movie stars who were working with either her father or her uncle (Cecil B.). I highly recommend this book for dance history enthusiasts

                                    Book Description

Now in paperback: The first comprehensive biography of the American cultural giant who changed popular theater and dance forever with her choreography for Oklahoma!, Carousel, and Brigadoon

Pioneering a distinctly American style that combined modern dance and ballet with a traditional folk idiom, Agnes de Mille popularized what had been an elitist art and irrevocably changed the American musical theater. During a life that spanned most of the twentieth century, de Mille worked and played with a fabulous cast of characters, from her uncle (the legendary Cecil B. de Mille) to Charlie Chaplin, Martha Graham, Cole Porter, Nol Coward, Rebecca West, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Drawing on unpublished papers and extensive interviews with friends, colleagues, relatives, and de Mille herself, Carol Easton takes us behind the scenes of de Mille's extraordinary life: struggling to establish a reputation, surviving a series of disastrous love affairs, meeting the conflicting demands of ambition and motherhood, dealing with a devastating illness. She unforgettably brings to life the combination of intelligence, artistry, and humor that was Agnes de Mille.

This biography offers little insight to what already exists, and doesn't convey the passion of De Mille's own writings [although they are quoted lavishly]. You would be much richer served to read her own memoirs:
"Dance to the Piper" [published 1952][early memoir: childhood in Hollywood, struggle to become a dancer]
"And Promenade Home" [published 1959] [early success, and wartime marriage]
"Speak to Me, Dance with Me" [published 1973] [more detail on the early career years, in London and in Hollywood]
"Where the Wings Grow" [published 1978] [about summers at Merriewold, the de Mille estate near the Delaware Water Gap]
"Reprieve: A Memoir" [published 1982] [about her stroke]

Agnes De Mille came from a driven and successful family: her maternal grandfather was the world renown economist, Henry George. Her father, William de Mille, was a Broadway playwright, and later Hollywood scenarist. Her uncle, Cecil B. De Mille, is known world over for his movie directing. She grew up in a milieu that expected achievement, and achieve she did: choreographer of the highest caliber, on Broadway [the groundbreaking "Oklahoma!", "Brigadoon", etc.] and in the ballet world [the groundbreaking "Rodeo", "Fall River Legend", "Three Virgins and a Devil"].

De Mille was passionate about dance. She was passionate about her beliefs [sometime see the video of her debate with a Hollywood columnist during the McCarthy era], passionate about everything. She was also an astute observer, a gifted writer, and self-critical.

You will find her books enthralling. Go to the source!

Agnes De Mille, has an objective view of Martha Graham, and at the same time, a very close relationship with the Artist. Her description on Martha's moods, are eloquent, and astute, as if you were Agnes De Mille herself, witnessing the intricate life of this Genius, Martha Graham.
The beggining of the book, might be a bit long if you are not a Dancer, but once it gets to the point, it is a very exciting book, you must own it.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant overview of a dance genius.......2002-03-18

It is unfortunate that this book is out of print, for it gives a overview of one of the most brilliant choreographers of the twentieth century. The mind and values of Martha Graham are exposed in detail by the author, and it serves its purpose in giving the curious reader insight into the life and dance technique of a woman who single-handedly developed one of the most original forms of movement to this date. Anyone who is overcome by watching the dances of Graham will definitely appreciate this book, written by a person who had known Graham for fifty-eight years. Included in the book are an excellent collection of black-and-white photographs, both of Graham and some of the people she worked closely with. Indeed, Graham was a beautiful woman, and her personality, as well as her physical beauty, are exemplified nicely in these photographs.

The knowledge one can gain from the reading of this book makes it well worth the time, for by reading it one can understand how Graham developed her technique, interestingly without any government aid; there was no National Endowment of the Arts to assist in her endeavors. Graham viewed dance as a celebration, and eschewed the attitude of those who danced for monetary gain. One reads of Graham's relationship with Louis Horst, and of the popularity of the writings of the philosopher Frederich Nietzsche among Horst, Graham, Doris Humphrey, and Isadora Duncan.

Graham's father told her that "bodies never lie", and this statment apparently had a major influence on her resulting "philosophy of dance", as well as the influence of Ruth St. Denis and Erick Hawkins. The author discusses the differences between the dance technique of Graham and Humphrey, the latter being characterized as mathematical by the author, the former emotional. But I find the Graham technique straightforward to view from a mathematical standpoint, if one is so inclined.

The technical aspects of the Graham technique are brought out nicely in the book, one example being the marvelous description of the "spiral fall" and its recovery. One also learns of the use of "plastiques", i.e, the posing and moving in scarves and costumes by the dancers. Also, it is interesting to learn of the omission of mirrors in the early Graham studios; lest the student, in the author's words, "drown in his own image". The class routine for the Graham dancers, particularly the floor exerices, along with the spasm of the the diaphragm, are the most well-known manifestation of the Graham technique, and are discussed nicely in this book.

It is fortunate that Graham was able to find such dedicated students for her classes. Forcing to live a frugal existence, these students found her dances a "religion that they served", according to the author. Indeed, if one has ever viewed modern dance performances of the Graham technique, one can see this attitude in the dancers, as though they were priveleged, and moving to a unique traceform in space never before executed.

The Graham technique is brilliant, and it forces one to rethink preconceived notions of what movement must be, and instead speculate on what it could be. Graham in her works made it readily apparent that gravity is real, but that it need not be a total master. Even on the floor the Graham dancers are in control, at least momentarily, interpolating brilliantly between order and bodily dissonance. Martha Graham, as protrayed by the author, was an innovator and a determined individualist, and has given us a unique collection of traceforms, both in our memories and in books and videos, that will embolden us and refresh us always.....

5 out of 5 stars The History of Modern.......2001-03-29

Agnes de Mille, a distinguished and popular choreographer in her own right, and a sometimes intimate friend of Martha Graham, has written an outstanding biography of this iconic woman. The story of Martha Graham is inevitably the story of Modern Dance-- which many would say she invented--and the history of American artists--of which she was the queen.

De Mille's book is both extremely informative and thoroughly enjoyable. She gives you the history you need in order to put Graham's revolutionary dance technique in context, and then she offers personal insights and observations on the life, love affairs, personality, triumphs, and tragedies of the inimitable Martha.

A portrait of a truly incredible, inspiring, tiny giant of a woman by another who is at least her equal in intellect and probably in artistry as well.

For anyone interested in dance, this book is an absolute must.

A marvelous collection of photos, images, and text about this revolutionary woman. More than just a performance artist, Isadora Duncan helped to usher in modernism and her artist contributions are here beautifully captured in text and image. Many of these picutres have never before been printed, at least in material I've seen, and the captioning of the photos provides detailed information.

Lizzie Borden: A Dance of Death, by Agnes De Mille

Agnes De Mille was best known for ballet and dance; this "work of art" will not displace those skills. Chapter 1 lists her acknowledgments. Many of her informants refused to be quoted (p.11). De Mille realizes their stories are what they "wish to remember" (p.12). But she "cross-checked whenever possible" (p.11). Judge Justin Dewey (not in this book) said an eyewitness without corroboration could be mistaken or lying. Chapter 2 describes the ruling class of Fall River: they starved their workers so they could live in luxury (p.13)! Power is established by the club or by the gun; the end result is money (p.14). De Mille is being coy here. "The love of money is the root of all evil."

Her history varies from other writers (pp.16-17), and not to her credit. Andrew was a self-made millionaire, and undoubtedly was looked down by those who inherited their wealth and lived on the hill. That is one reason for living among his middle-class neighbors (p.17). Lizzie's behavior seems like any teenager (pp.19-20). De Mille shows great imagination in her descriptions but skimps on the historical facts (p.21). The locked doors and windows were done "out of fear" (p.24). One funny legend is "staring outside windows of stores or stations" (p.27). Can De Mille be that credulous? They all sound like "urban legends" that can't be corroborated (p.29). De Mille again shows credulity in her quote "long after the trial" (p.36). "The idea of an intruder as murderer was reluctantly abandoned by the police" (p.54). [Yet that is the solution to this crime!] De Mille never mentioned the spontaneous general strike that occurred after the murders. The arrest of a suspect quelled this and sent them back to work. Lizzie's acquittal was met with cheers in the street (p.71). The disrepute came afterwards.

Chapter 3 contains De Mille's comments on her trip to Fall River with Joseph Welch. They visited the murder house and "Maplecroft". De Mille repeats the forged confession (p.107). The unnamed residents of a square granite house on the hill said "there was much more to it than anyone knew, that the truth was by no means known" (p.108). The daughter of Andrew Jennings displayed some of the trial exhibits. But not the defense notebooks (p.111). De Mille talks about life at the Borden's house. Some of it is third-hand, like the two men in the carriage (p.125). There is no corroboration here. The value of this book is in the first 3 chapters from De Mille's trip to Fall River and her reports on the conversations. It is only part of the whole truth, but contains some important items.

The second part "Fall River Legend" is about her personal life as a choreographer. Her personal tragedies gave her an insight into her plans for this ballet (pp.130-131). De Mille had no scruples about rewriting history (p.137). Was Lizzie suffering from unrequited love (p.135)? I found these chapters very boring, like gossip about unknown people. It is like a commercial for products you will never buy. Chapter 7 tells of the dreadful economics of the ballet theatre. Her last pages mention the interest in murder by people. This story motivated people to be more kindly towards their children (p.243)! Chapter 8 says dancers are underpaid (p.266). European governments lavish money on their ballet and opera (p.268). Our government started to finance the arts in 1965. [A sign of decadence?] Chapter 9 tells of their tour in Moscow in 1966, and the "Autumn River Legend". Chapter 10 has De Mille's verdict: Lizzie did it and "got away with it". The fascination of this case is: Lizzie couldn't have done it, but there was no other suspect.

This book is a wonderful testimony of M's de Mille's perserverance in her chosen field of dance. M's de Mille uses the letters she wrote to construct her life as a dancer and later a choreographer.

M's de Mille does an excellent job of portraying the people she worked with (George Ballachine, Irving Berlin, Gertrude Lawrence, and Cole Porter among others) as well as describing herself, warts and all. She doesn't feel the need to make herself look good at someone else's expense.

It's amazing that a woman that was told she was ugly, who was definitely not encouraged to go into dance, managed to become one of the great, most memorable choreographers ("Oklahoma!", "Brigadoon" and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" among many others) of all time. It's especially astouding to realize she did this without any help or encouragement from her famous uncle, Cecil de Mille or her father William de Mille (who was a successful playwright).

Read this book and find out how M's de Mille makes the long journey from a being a fired choreographer in New York to winning two Tony awards. You'll be glad to be along for this trip.
