Customer Reviews:
The title of this book is a little misleading..........2000-06-26
I bought this book for my teen-age son who did everything wrong with regard to his checking account. He didn't record his checks, ATM withdrawls, deposits, etc. He didn't reconcile his statements. (You get the picture.) I thought this book would tell him how to get back on track. The cover of the book states: "Emergency Help For You and Your Checkbook" which implies it is written for someone who already has a checking account and has made some (disasterous) mistake. I was disappointed.
The book did not give any information about how to "fix" mistakes. For instance, it didn't tell the reader how to reconcile bank statements from an existing account or one that had not been previously reconciled.
This would be an excellent book for a young person with a new checking account. This is basic information everyone needs BEFORE they get a checking account and certainly, before they get in trouble with their checkbook. But it is not, as the title implies, aimed at helping you get out of trouble with your checkbook.
Overall, a good little booklet (less than 50 pages, without the "review" at the end of the book) with very important, BASIC information on understanding the mechanics of a checking account (how to write a check, float, stop payment, post dating, reconciliation, etc.) But, if you are having a checkbook "emergency", this is not the book you need.
checkbook 9-1-1.......2000-05-01
This book has been extremely helpful to me. It is easy to read and understand, and it was most complete.

A good abridgement.......2004-01-18
Remini's text provides the reader with an excellent synopsis of the life and times of Old Hickory while condensing three volumes into one. While the author at times defends the General loyally, Remini attempts to provide details of both Andrew Jackson's many triumphs and pitfalls. for someone trying to become acquainted with this president or Jacksonian American, this is an excellent text. It provides narrative details of the facts and the context surrounding President Jackson, but it is also highly readable. All in all, I would recomend the text highly.

Book Description
Unlike other branches of the military, the Marine Corps required some of its combat aviators in Vietnam to spend time doing forward air control duty on the ground, with the frontline troops. For Captain Sam Brantley, it was a harsh and horrific lesson in the realities of jungle warfare. The battle had always seemed somewhat distant to him, flying well-armed A4s hundreds of feet above the trees and paddies. But during the spring of the Tet Offensive, Brantley's war changed. What he would see and do in those seven months on the ground would change his life forever.
In the tradition of Michael Herr's award-winning "Dispatches," Samuel Brantley breaks new ground in this edgy, irreverent tale of a young man's evolution from a wide-eyed Marine aviation cadet dedicated to flying and serving his country, to a battle-weary veteran struggling to re-enter civilian life in post-Vietnam America. Along the way, Brantley treats his readers to a parallax view of war and the militaryfrom the air, the ground, and the inside-out.

Late at Night While You're Sleeping..........2006-04-03
"Zero Dark Thirty" is yet another, maverick look at the Indochina war. The hot button behind ZDT was that policy of the Marines in Vietnam requiring fighter pilots to serve time on the ground as grunts. That is precisely what happened to author Brantley. His life was thereby changed forever. The tales of combat in ZDT are as graphic and grim as any this reviewer has read. Much of the chilling action takes place at night, when the VC always had the perpetual advantage. This reviewer was pained by the NG Marine looey blown away by a booby trap on his first patrol. ZDT is challenging reading; it is written almost Marine to Marine. The style is highly colloquial. It took this reviewer most of the text to adapt to the style. Too much space is devoted to Brantley's stateside training, but no one can state he went to RVN unprepared. The glossary virtually defies description; it raises as many questions as it answers. This reader still does not know what "tally" means. The end result is an extremely challenging read. ZDT may only be fully appreciated by former Marines who can decipher the jargon. This is in contrast to "Rumor of War" by Phillip Caputo or Eddie Delezen's "Eye of the Tiger" which put the reader right there on the ground with the Corps, but in plain English. The author does indeed return to the World but not wrapped too tightly. His experience back here can only be described as sad, best not dwelled on. On a positive note, ZDT is very professionally printed, bound and typeset. It is presented with polish and very easy to read. (These small details should not go unnoticed). The best advice from this reviewer is to give ZDT a 3 day pass and try it. It is guaranteed to give yet another observation post to that strange war that affected so many of us. Once again; those of us who came back to the World sound in mind and body should count our blessings daily. ZDT will echo that mantra anew.
Damned good honest graphic read - highly recommended.......2003-02-18
This is a book by a Marine aviator and captain who was assigned as a forward air controller with the Marine infantry (grunts) in the jungles of Vietnam. It depicts honestly and graphically what he experienced during his 7 months as a FAC. It gives rare insight into Marine aviation and the shameful way our combat hero veterans were/are treated when they returned to the US. Semper Fi!
A candidly honest exposition into the lethal and bloody hell.......2002-12-08
Zero Dark Thirty is a military memoir of the Vietnam War, by Samuel Brantley, who was a United States Marine Corps combat aviator. The Marines required their combat aviators in Vietnam to spend time doing forward air control duty on the ground, with and along side the field troops in the front line danger zone. As a result, Brantley received a shocking awakening to the true horrors of war, and his seven months on the ground would significantly impact upon the rest of his life. Zero Dark Thirty is highly recommended for being a powerfully written, vividly presented, and candidly honest exposition into the lethal and bloody hell that was the Vietnam War.

pleasant read, good ideas, valuable.......2007-09-19
An honest appraisal of the fundraising industry and how to make it work better.
There are also many creative ideas you can adapt to your personal opportunities. Of several such books I've read recently, this was the best.
The personal side of fundraising.......2004-12-30
Burnett skillfully shows how to satisfy "the bottom line" through a positive relationship with donors. Practical, relevant tips are offered for reaching out to potential donors and making them feel part of the mission. It's a pleasure to see someone writing about "the psychology of fundraising." A well-crafted, beneficial read.
Brilliant!.......2003-08-03
Ken Burnett is one of the world's great, and most respected, fundraisers, and this is one of the most important fundraising books you'll ever read. Relationship Fundraiisng is on every top 10 list I've ever seen. And it deserves to be. Most non-profits do not treat their donors well, and therefore raise less income than they could. When you follow Ken's advice you will raise more money for your mission. I know Ken personally and while I've raised many tens of millions for non-profits, and have been fundraising for 25 years, every time I hear Ken speak, or read his books and articles, I learn something new.
Relationship Fundraising Should Be Part of What We All Do.......2003-02-25
Many of us know that it's more important then ever to build relationships with our donors and prospects. Ken Burnett has been talking about it for over 10 years and the newest edition of his book on Relationship Fundraising is even more relevant today than when it was first written. Ken skillfully uses his extensive experience and insight to focus on what it really is all about through both what has already worked elsewhere and what we should strive to achieve. This book is easy and enjoyable to read and supports our ambitions for techniques including donor development and moves management but it is so much more than that. Relationship Fundraising takes lessons from yesterday and gives you the inspiration to truly get back to people and build positive lasting relationships into the future. Each of us can benefit from going beyond the buzz words and see what it is really all about or at least re-establish the importance of Relationship Fundraising by reading this invaluable book.

If all that has ever been said and written about the art and science of fundraising could be distilled down to just what really matters—what fundraisers everywhere need to know—there would be only a small number of true gems deserving of the description, “nuggets of information.”
Leading international fundraiser Ken Burnett, author of the classic Relationship Fundraising, has identified and defined 89 such nuggets which he presents here as The Zen of Fundraising, a fun read, one-of-a-kind look into what makes donors tick and–more importantly–what makes them give.

Good Points, but Where's the Zen?.......2007-09-01
I was hoping that this book would provide an overview of working smarter, not harder -- for example focus on understanding your own message in order to be more effective. Instead, it is a "to do" list (which the title states)that only the largest and best established organizations would have time/resources/or history to do. I'm a start-up, and for me, I can only hope to get to the point where most of the ideas in this book are useful -- or even possible.
It's good in that the underlying theme is: It's the customer, stupid. But that is something that all good salespeople/strategic marketing know: take care of your own customers first, keep communication channels open, listen more than you talk, find out why they do business with you. etc.
So: my biggest problem is the title: It should be: Maintaing Funding for Charitable Organizations: A checklist for focusing on your donor relationships. If you are in that situation you should probably read this book. But don't look for the zen.
Speaking as a professional..........2006-06-15
This book is a snap shot of everything that works in donor relationships - and some good advice about things that don't. It's about building a relationship that really means something to the donor as well as the charity they are donating to. And it's also about being proud to be a fundraiser - stand up and be counted!!
Through a writing style, which stays light right to the last few pages, Ken manages to capture the essence of a lot of jargonese which penetrates the fundraising world. This is a simple book - but not for simple minds. If you like the snap shot style of American quick fixes then this is a great introduction to relationship fundraising and a whole lot more. At the end Ken makes some personal points and a bit of a plea for better customer service - well made and if only half the advice in this little book is put into practice, there would definitely be a shift.
Just try one simple thing which Ken outlines - I would suggest a fundraiser working on their own would really benefit from number 17. Really understand your donors - no amount of consultancy and research by other people can ever replace that one!
If you are new to fundraising, then take advice from number 71 - Be proud to be a fundraiser - and number 76 - `Be respectful of your donors, and show that respect even when they're not present' - and lastly number 78, which gives the ultimate in reading lists for fundraisers, both old and new.
The fact that Ken points us in the direction of best practice from a great variety of sources - big household names from Britain such as the RNLI but also from across the globe. Reading this on the tube was ideal, it is possible to dip in and out and I enjoyed creating my own `fundraising menu'. Recommended is a number 78, 72, 48, 22 and 17. Oh and definitely 87, the outlawing of killer phrases such as `'That won't work' and `There isn't time'. But then again...

Description:
Based upon a mail survey completed by 275 donors of a non-profit organization, this study measured the association between perceptions of public relationships and donor support. A modified version of Hon and Grunig's [Hon, L. & Grunig, J. E. (1999). Guidelines for measuring relationships in public relations. Gainsville, FL: Institute for Public Relations] relationship scale was used. Results of one-way analyses of variance indicate that strong public relationships are not related to amount donated, but they are associated with years of support, happiness to continue donating, and happiness to recommend others to donate.

How to buy land cheap.......2002-09-11
Disappointing! After much time and much searching for cheap land the author's way, I came up with ZIP! Nothing I found was as cheap as the book's examples. It was a waste of my time...so much so that I had to come back and say so. The rules have changed, real estate is changed, and the good deals are just not there. I'm really disappointed after spending so much for the book. I tried in the areas the book suggested. I even live in one of the areas the book suggested as being a good area to try. I'm not picky either. I just can't spend a fortune on property, and since I don't have a bundle, the properties in this real estate boom economy, are out of my reach. The book promised to deliver the strategies to get the reader cheap land. It failed to do so.
By far the best.......2002-07-19
This book is the best book i have found for buying land cheap.
A few weeks after i purchased this book i bought i acre of land seven miles from the Candian border for [70.00] free and clear .
This is better than buying all those courses for hundreds of dollars .
Techniques that work, period........2000-08-28
I have been a tax foreclosed property investor for just over two years now and wish I would have found this book earlier!
All of the techniques that I use to find cheap land, and even some that I have never thought of before, are all in this book. Residentially zoned building lots for between $5.00 and $100.00 are available to anyone willing to use the techniques spelled out in this informative book. Large acreage can also be acquired cheaply and with relative ease.
This book is actually more of a manual on acquiring all types of cheap land, listing each technique individually and then tying in the overall ideas about acquiring county and state owned property very neatly in the end.
If you are looking to make some money on the side buying, selling or trading this niche type of investment property, or if you are just looking for a place to go camping each you that you can call you own, this is the book for you!
Informative, Easy to Read, But Too Brief.......1999-11-19
With only 124 pages not counting the glossary and several lists and white space, this is one of the easiest books to read. There is good information, but the depth applied to each subject is not enough. The chapter on Canadian land was different and not commonly written about, especially in the states. The author whets your appetite and leaves your wanting more. And that was my slight disappointment with "How to Buy Land Cheap". I have seen land bought for $1 and a house bought for $50 (including the land), so I know that what Mr. Preston write of is not only possible but true. Every word is believable and there is no fluff, boasting or exaggeration in this book. The author is not blowing his own horn or trying to sell other products. Although refreshing and insightful, this book is a primer and geared for the beginner. And since the 50 states have 50 different laws and rules, some of the information may not be the case in some states. I liked the book and the price is reasonable but I just felt that the book was too short. More advanced readers will find the lack of depth boring and superficial. This Fifth Edition text has obviously been updated and the author is correct in stating that things change and bargain real estate purchase methods change. Just as homesteading is no longer a viable option so has the RTC (Resolution Trust Corp.) gone away. The suggestion of using the United National catalog is one that I had used myself as a source of regional information at a cheap cost. I've said it before, but buying land sight unseen in the era of toxic waste dumps, wetlands, under ground storage tanks, and all the other natural and man made diasters is foolhardy. Even a trash pile on a farm has been known to contain empty containers of weed killer or insecticide that are toxic. The author is correct in stressing that you do your research. I recommend this book but not only to beginners and with the caveat that it doesn't cover the topics to the depths that I would have liked. This book started as a phamphlet, today it is either a long phamphlet or a short book. I applaud the authors reference publication lists as so many authors don't share their sources. Mr. Preston write in a down to earth style, easily understood giving the reader the feeling that he knows his subject and has done it himself. His title is excellent and the good book could have been excellent with more details, more depth, and more stories of sucess.
Gets right to the point of buying cheap land........1999-04-27
I liked this book because it got "right to the point". No hype, but just facts. There we're no claims that you were going to get a million dollar lot of land for $100. It told you what to expect. I've read this type of information elsewhere, but never comprised in one text. The author presented several routes along with addresses to find and buy cheap land throughout the U.S. and Canada, although Canadian land is more difficult to purchase (as the book claims). Very easy reading, and extremely affordable book.

Book Description
In-depth interviews with the maverick British choreographer best known for his revolutionary, tony award-winning Swan Lake
In the ten years since Matthew Bourne started his dance company, Adventures in Motion Pictures, he has earned a reputation as one of the most exciting choreographers at work today. His experimental style can be seen in his original dances-such as Town and Country, a work that includes a pas de deux that Bourne describes as "a Fred and Ginger number for two men"-and in his new versions of ballet classics, including his groundbreaking Swan Lake, with its cast of male swans, and The Nutcracker, set in a Dickensian orphanage. Drawing on his years of studying all varieties of dance as well as on his vast knowledge of dance history, theater, and popular culture, Bourne has been able to fuse elements of classical and modern dance, theatrical innovation, and sexual expression in a new way, reflecting a uniquely ironic, postmodern sensibility in his playing with the elements of classical dance and reexamining the traditional relationships between-and within-the sexes.
In these interviews with the distinguished dance and theater critic Alastair Macaulay, Bourne demonstrates persuasively just how he has synthesized these disparate elements to create an experience that audiences around the world have found mesmerizing and startling in its beauty and originality.

Black Hawk in his own words.......2007-08-01
This is an easy to read, valuable piece of near-primary source material - which fills in the gaps that I find in most collections of the last 400 years of American history. Like adding Howard Zinn material to your study of US history, the words of Black Hawk balance the traditional textbook summary of native Indian history and culture.
Black Hawk speaks in a narrative storyline that deserves our attention and understanding. He was without the benefit of support, and thus was unable to confirm the more than substantial memory at his grasp. The editorial notations added within the text that at times confirm or counter Black Hawk's telling, though intended to clarify the historical record, will thus serve to mildly frustrate the reading.
And although this is an "autobiography" of his life, there are significant questions as to the caliber of translation of Black Hawk's words. Just enough so that I imagined him actually telling of his life in his native tongue to one truly fluent in the language and how much richer the story would be.
I found myself marveling most the sections where Black Hawk speaks of the power of nature and it's interwoven influence on the lives of the native tribes, as well as their deep respect and understanding for the impact living things have on one another. By contrasting his culture with the encroaching white settler culture, he is prescient of what is to come. Through the eyes and words of this sincere man, we hear of the habit of deception and the power of greed of a dominating culture which will eventually strip away most all valuable material things from these people, while at the same moment speaking faithlessly of highest ideals and principles.
The book is a top read for anyone curious to hear a more authentic, first-hand narrative of the realities of life in the 1800's for a wise but slowly disappearing culture.
A view of the Indian Wars from the Native-American side.......2004-01-12
During the War of 1812, Black Hawk (1767-1838), a chief among the Sauk and Fox Indians, fought on the side of the British. In 1823, after signing a treaty with the United States, the Sauk and Fox were compelled to leave their lands in present-day Illinois, and move west of the Mississippi River. In April 1832, after Black Hawk had received what he considered to be too many affronts, he led a large following back to the disputed land, beginning what was later known as the Black Hawk War (April-August 1832). After his surrender, Black Hawk was given a tour of the expanding United States, and he decided that he wished to have recorded his life's story, so that the people of the United States could understand him and his reasons for going to war. This is the Black Hawk's life story.
This book was originally published in 1833, and was supposedly dictated by Black Hawk to his translator, Antoine Leclair. There is some speculation as to how much of this work is actually Black Hawk's own words, and how much is Leclair's ghost writing. But, I must admit that I did not bother much with this controversy. I found the book to be a fascinating look into Black Hawk's mind and how he saw the European-American settlement of the United States.
First of all, the hero of this story is no sugar-coated Disney character. His story is filled with battle and plunder and the taking of scalps. A true warrior, steeped in his culture's ideals, he lived and fought in what he considered an honorable and logical manner, and could not understand the way that the white people lived and fought. This is no politically correct paean to the Native-Americans, but a clear-eyed explanation of who Black Hawk was, and why he did what he did.
So, if you are interested in American history, and want a view of the Indian Wars from the Native-American side, then I highly recommend this book to you.
Product Description
In his life, Abraham Lincoln wrote two short autobiographical sketches. In this book both of these sketches have been combined into a single, first-person autobiographical narrative. The text has been supplemented with Lincoln speeches and letters which are autobiographical in nature. Where Lincoln's writings were not available to cover certain important periods of his life, Mr. Newman supplied his own comments, readily distinguishable from Lincoln's own text.
Book Description
These two tribes have long resided together, and now constitute one people, although there are some internal regulations among them which tend to preserve a distinctive name and lineage. The chiefs, on ceremonial occasions, claim to be representatives of independent tribes, but this distinction is nominal.
