      Book Description

Leading the reader through a series of amazing coincidences and details, this book presents startling evidence that John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln, was never captured, but escaped to live for decades, continue his career, marry and had children.

      1 out of 5 stars Hack history.......2005-03-30

John Wilkes Booth died as history records he did. He shot Lincoln, and fled, nearly escaping. He was caught, more with luck and manpower than anything else, by Federal troops and detectives in a barn near Port Royal Virginia. After he refused to surrender, one trooper took it upon himself (against orders) to shoot Booth. The bullet went through his spine. Booth was dragged out of the barn, and died a few hours later on the porch of a farmhouse. Booth was a famous man. Everyone recognized him. His autopsy was preformed virtually in public, and his body matched very well with descriptions given of him by various people.

Do not allow yourself to be convinced by amateur, opportunistic and deceitful history. The huge amount of genuine confusion and mystery which still surrounds the assassination of Abraham Lincoln should not be discounted or swept under the rug. Neither should it allow the propagation of such utterly untrue and patently false theories as this.

Yes, for many years, a mummy toured the country, reportedly the corpse of John Wilkes Booth. It was a carnival side-show. That is all this book amounts to.

5 out of 5 stars David E. George was John Wilkes Booth!!.......2004-11-25

I have read this book from cover to cover since i got it and i am of the firm belief that the John Wilkes Booth Claimant David E. George in 1902 was indeed the real Booth and that he had escaped capture from the law after assassinating President Abraham Lincoln in Fords Theater back in 1865, and that a confederate soldier by the name of 'John' 'William' 'Boyd' was killed in Booths place!.Read this gripping book and judge for yourself!.

      5 out of 5 stars DYNAMITE! A MUST-READ For any Lincoln Fan.......2002-09-23

I read this book from cover to cover the first time I got it and have bought 5 other copies as gifts for friends who have said the SAME THING!!! It is the BEST book I have read since THE LINCOLN CONSPIRACY, and by the way, The last 4 chapters read very much like an extension OF THAT very BOOK!! I won't give any thing away except to say that RETURN OF THE ASSASSIN-JOHN WILKES BOOTH is most assuredly a MUST READ BOOK for every Lincoln Assassination buff Bar none!!!

        Book Description

How should we respond to individuals with disabilities? What does it mean to be disabled? Over fifty million Americans, from neonates to the fragile elderly, are disabled. Some people say they have the right to full social participation, while others repudiate such claims as delusive or dangerous. In this compelling book, three experts in ethics, medicine, and the law address pressing disability questions in bioethics and public policy. Anita Silvers, David Wasserman, and Mary B. Mahowald test important theories of justice by bringing them to bear on subjects of concern in a wide variety of disciplines dealing with disability. They do so in the light of recent advances in feminist, minority, and cultural studies, and of the groundbreaking Americans with Disabilities Act. Visit our website for sample chapters!

A client asked me for a book that explained the basics of health insurance. I surprized him and myself when I said I didn't know one. So I looked everywhere. The books that are comprehensive are technical tomes for people in the industry. The ones that are for lay people are oversimplified and condescending.
This is the only book that I found that's both comprehensive and for consumers. I'm glad this publisher does books on insurance for ordinary people.
But I'm still surprized there aren't more books on medical insurance for consumers. It's a critical issue!

3 out of 5 stars Duplication and Mediocrity.......2004-02-02

This book does contain some definitions and explanation of health insurance conventions that may be helpful to many. For instance I found the explanation of what to expect from Medicare and the info on Medigap policies informative. As for advice, there are few insights here, mostly platitudes and generalities that should be obvious to anyone (like "read the policy terms"!) Far worse, the text in this book is EXACTLY IDENTICAL to the book "Health Insurance Made E-Z" - so DON'T BUY BOTH!

        Book Description

With an introduction by Marian Wright Edelman. This is a true story from the front lines of the civil rights struggle--the story of the Carter family of Sunflower County, Mississippi. African-American sharecroppers and the parents of thirteen children, Mae Bertha and Matthew Carter accepted their school district's 1965 "Freedom of Choice" offer at its face value and enrolled their seven school-age children in the formerly all-white schools of tiny Drew, Mississippi. SILVER RIGHTS tells what happened to them next. As noted civil rights activist and Children's Defense Fund president, Marian Wright Edelman says in her introduction, "This deeply moving book chronicles the pain and poverty in the lives of sharecroppers, their extraordinary grit, courage, and endurance." "We should be grateful to and inspired by the lives of the Carter family."--Booklist; "A book teeming with loud voices and heat and faith, and backbreaking work and timeless courage and honor."--Melissa Fay Greene, author of PRAYING FOR SHEETROCK. A LITERARY GUILD SELECTION.

5 out of 5 stars Silver Rights in the Mississippi Delta.......2004-09-02

In the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Congress mandated the desegregation of all public schools receiving Federal aid. Mississippi tried to "comply" with the law by a "Freedom of Choice" program which allowed students over a certain age and parents to designate the schools they wished to attend. While, perhaps, facially appealing, the "Freedom of Choice" program served as a means to intimidate blacks from attempting to register in what were at the time all-white schools. Those with the courage to do so faced danger to their livelihood, property, and persons. The "Freedom of Choice" program ultimately was invalidated through litigation.

Constance Curry's inspiring book "Silver Rights" (1995) tells the story of a family of black sharecroppers in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, Mae Bertha and Matthew Carter and seven of their thirteen children (all their children then of school age). The Carter's took the "Freedom of Choice" program at its word. In 1965, the seven children enrolled in the primary and secondary schools of Drew, Mississippi, a small town with a then-deserved reputation for violence and lawlessness. Ms. Curry worked as a field representative for the American Friends Service Committee from 1965-1975. She got to know the Carter family well and was instrumental in providing the assistance necessary to get them through their difficult times.

The book includes excellent pictures of life in the Mississippi Delta, for both white and black people, in the early to mid-twentieth century. The book shows a feel for the place, for sharecropping life on the farms and for life in the dusty towns, for the blues culture of the Delta, and for its history. The book offers substantial discussion of the notorious Emmett Till case and of other lynchings and of early attempts to organize civil rights activities in the Delta. Ms. Curry eloquently evokes the spirit of the Delta at the opening of her story:

"In trying to describe the Mississippi Delta, I seem to find only superlatives -- the flattest land, the blackest dirt, the hottest summers, the nicest people, the poorest people. In defining the delta's past and even its present, I am aware of these extremes and also of its incongruities: the violence and the peacefulness, the beauty and the ugliness, the stillness and the tension. It is a place complex almost beyond comprehension." (p. xxi)

In telling her story, Ms. Curry lets her protagonists do most of the talking. The opening chapters set the stage and explain the Carter's ambitions for an education, and an end to the hardships of sharecropping, for their children. The second section of the book explores the backround of Mae Bertha Carter and her mother Luvenia's early life as the wife of a Delta sharecropper. The book discusses throughout the experiences of the Carter family as they faced violence and shootings in the early stages following their enrollment in the formerly white schools. Throughout their period in the public schools the children endured harassment, name-calling and ostracism. The Carter family was forced off the plantation and Matthew Carter lost his job. The book shows the courage and perseverance of the family and the aid offered by the AFSC and other organizations.

The book includes interviews with each of the thirteen Carter children and discussions of the family members fared after their graduation from the public schools. There are some moving scenes when Ms. Curry reestablished contact with the Carter family in 1988, thirteen years after her work with the AFSC came to an end. Mae Bertha Carter remains determined and forceful and has received honors from institutions within the State of Mississippi that would have been unthinkable in the 1960s.

This book tells an important story of the silver rights movement. It is a work of both history and memory and describes beautifully the changes wrought with time.

5 out of 5 stars This book looks into the soul of a very brave family........1997-05-02

Silver Right is a moving and telling story of my family struggle to achieve equality in America. This book does a very good job of relating the feeling, fear and turmoil that I felt during those four long years of being the only black family at an all white school in the Mississippi Delta in the sixites. Silver Rights goes beyond the actions of people during that time. It looks at the cilvil right movement on a personal level. This book will make you laugh, and it will also make your cry

          Book Description

Delphus E. Carpenter (1877-1951) was Colorado's commissioner of interstate streams during a time when water rights were a legal battleground for western states. A complex, unassuming man as rare and cunning in politics and law as the elusive silver fox of the Rocky Mountain West, Carpenter boldly relied on negotiation instead of endless litigation to forge agreements among states first, before federal intervention. In "Silver Fox of the Rockies," Daniel Tyler tells Carpenter's story and that of the great interstate water compacts he helped create. Those compacts, produced in the early twentieth century, have guided not only agricultural use but urban growth and development throughout much of the American West to this day.

In Carpenter's time, most western states relied on the doctrine of prior appropriation--first in time, first in right--which granted exclusive use of resources to those who claimed them first, regardless of common needs. Carpenter feared that population growth and rapid agricultural development in states sharing the same river basins would rob Colorado of its right to a fair share of water. To avoid that eventuality, Carpenter invoked the compact clause of the U.S. Constitution, a clause previously used to settle boundary disputes, and applied it to interstate water rights. The result was a mechanism by which complex issues involving interstate water rights could be settled through negotiation without litigating them before the U.S. Supreme Court. Carpenter believed in the preservation of states rights in order to preserve the constitutionally mandated balance between state and federal authority.

Today, water remains critically important to the American West, and the great interstate water compacts Carpenter helped engineer constitute his most enduring legacy. Of particular significance is the Colorado River Compact of 1922, without which Hoover Dam could never have been built.

5 out of 5 stars Not a book for beginners..........2007-04-04

My suggestion is to read The Complete Idiot's Guide to Buying and Selling a Home, or a comparable beginners book, before reading this one.
You need to know the basic home buying process and terminology first. The greatest value of the Kiplinger book is on the elaborate discussion on financial and tax issues related to buying and selling a home.
The book is divided into two major sections, each starting with those two issues (why buy/sell, tax repercussions), before discussing the buying/selling process.
I found the discussion on tax benefits of home ownership, tax breaks on mortgage interests, and tax laws that allow tax-free profits from selling your primary residence, very informative. It has many sample forms used in the home buying/selling process. You might find the details overwhelming, but that's because there's so much great info which is not covered in Idiot/Dummy books.

                        2 out of 5 stars Faire.......2006-03-07

I actually could not even complete the book. I feel that the prose is somewhat circular and felt that the book was disorganized. However, my main problem was with the writing. I had a difficult time following the book.

5 out of 5 stars good with House Selling for Dummies.......2003-07-10

I was only interested in the "selling" part. It was quite good. With both this and House Selling for Dummies in hand, you'll have everything you need to sell your home.

                        I highly recommend it.

WHEN I READ THE BACK COVER OF THE BOOK IT SAID THE READER WOULD FIND OUT ABOUT THE OCCURENCES OF PROFESSIONAL BALLPLAYERS ACTORS AND POLITICIANS INSIDE THE GOLD CLUB. BUT WHEN I READ THE BOOK I QUICKLY LEARNED THAT SHE KEEPS ALL OF THESE PEOPLE NAMELESS EXCEPT FOR HERSELF AND FORMER GOLD CLUB EMPLOYEES. AND WHEN A CELEBRITY DOES ENTER THE CLUB SHE REFERS TO THEM AS A BIG SPENDER WITHOUT EVEN GIVING YOU A DECENT CLUE WHO THEY ARE. I KNOW THAT PEOPLE READING THIS BOOK ARENT NEARLY AS INTERESTED IN FINDING OUT ABOUT JACKLYN "DIVA" BUSH AS THEY ARE IN THE CELEBRITY ESCAPADES THAT WENT ON IN THE CLUB. BE CAREFULL BECAUSE THIS BOOK ISNT GONNA TELL YOU ANYTHING AS FAR AS THATS CONCERNED.

THE GOLD CLUB" THE JACKLYN"DIVA" BUSH STORY: HOW I WENT FROM GOLD ROOM TO COURT ROOM details her life as a dancer and her time spent on trial. This book was very interesting and educational. I learned that stripping is more than undressing; it's an art that has been parlayed into big business. At times the story was a bit confusing and hard to follow because Ms. Bush kept switching between past and present. Still it was an entertaining, eye opening read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story of survival!.......2003-11-27

This was a wonderful portrayal of one woman's experience and perspective as an entertainer at the Gold Club, and, as the subtitle indicates, it is also about Ms. Bush's life. There is nothing sleazy or ghetto about this book.

Ms. Bush is an example of a survivor. She cleverly integrated chapter snapshots of her past as though reflecting, at times, on her hard upbringing or comparing how far she had come from her deprived past. It doesn't take a Ph.D to follow and appreciate the creative flair she incorporated. I certainly would not have been interested in this story had she depicted it frame-by-frame from infancy to adulthood. This is a well-written story (I think all of the negative comments are from those fellow dancers she mentioned who didn't like her).

Ms. Bush doesn't claim to be perfect, in fact, in the end, she states that it is her hope that others can learn from her mistakes.

I especially recommend this book for young women who may be tempted by notions of making fast money.

Thanks for sharing your story, Ms. Bush. You've shown that one is never too old to learn from mistakes or develop a new chapter in life.

                        1 out of 5 stars EMBARASSING!.......2003-10-07

Although I have not read the entire contents of this book I read enough for it to give me a pounding headache because it is indeed very painful to read. Who published this book? Jerry Springer Publishers.

Being an exotic dancer myself and a very intellegent one at that I was embarassed that the stripper community has been so badly misrepresented by Ghetto Queen.

This book is not only badly written, it is a big joke. This book has very little value. I would not even use it for a coaster.

                        1 out of 5 stars Pitiful.............2003-07-30

I bought this book because I knew some of the people involved in the GOLD CLUB. The book lacks professionalism throughout. Yes I realize that DIVA was not well educated but it looks like someone could have put this book together better. I guess I just expected more. I can not imagine the book holding the interest of anyone outside of the Atlanta area where we saw so much about the Gold Club on the news. To sum up this book in one word.......SLEAZE.
