In Turtlehut's review he/she said social security answer ID277 indicated that certain income was not counted in determining if there was to be an income tax on benefits. That is not correct. That information relates to the earnings limit test,or how much income is counted on which a worker pays fico taxes into the fund. There are people who collect pensions and still work. I should know, I pay income tax all my retirement income including social security and it is punitive. The tax was imposed in l983....thank Ronald Reagan and his revolting congress.

Right On Retirement.......2004-09-18

Geez, I find Tut's review inappropriate. My copy had an errata sheet with a correction for the error that is cited, which is more than I can say for some of the other books I've read on retirement. The book is readable, comprehensive and not too technical. I found answers to a lot of my questions. I particularly liked that I could find the information I needed without reading the whole book. Malaspina seems to know enough about her audience to have anticipated the key issues and organized them from the most basic to the most arcane. My advice: If you are within 5 years of retirement, this book should be on your "must read" list.

First thing I read was wrong.......2004-04-18

I just received this book and thumbing through it read Ohapter 14 on Social Security. On page 141 she that at age 62 you lose $1 in benefits for every $2 in earnings above $11,500 - which is correct. But then she goes on to saying "You can't get around these reductions in benefits by supplementing your Social Security income with withdrawals from your other savings or retirement plans. CAPITAL GAINS, dividends, interest income, and any other withdrawals from your retirement plans or accounts count as income and you fail the test if you push past $11,500 or $30,000 regardless of source."

This seemed wrong to me so I went to the Social Security web site. The SSA says (answer ID 277): "Nonwork sources of income, such as: inheritance payments, pensions, income from investments, IRA distributions, interest, or other sources do not count as wages for the earnings test."

What other errors are there in this book? I don't trust it after 30 minutes of reading, certaintly not to help with my retirement decisions. At least I only lost the cost of the book

I stumbled across this book browsing in my local bookstore and I couldn't believe my eyes. It laid out everything you need to know to retire. It is extremely well-organized and well-written. I gave a copy to my financial advisor and told him I finally understood all the stuff he was trying to explain to me.

Enter the maze...........2003-03-11

This has to be one of the most boring topics in the field of financial advice. The proliferation of retirement savings plans, the maze of regulations, exceptions, and judgement calls that have to be considered by the average retiree is almost numbing. It's boring in the abstract. But it gets your attention when it's your money and future in the balance. Bascially simple rules for accumulating retirement wealth and accessing it continue to evolve like a patchwork quilt. Malaspina is relentless in her efforts to cover the topic and we are the beneficiaries. Chapter 21 treats the issue of company stock held in a retirement plan and how it can receive tax advantaged treatment. Malaspina does an even-handed job of explaining the risks and discusses whether it makes sense to take advantage of this often overlooked opportunity. Information "For Women Only" and non-spousal partners (Chapters 22,23)is dealt with briefly, but it also very useful. One important retiree misconception that does not appear in this book: Many otherwise sophisticated investors facing annual required mandatory minimum withdrawals from their IRA's at 70 1/2 don't realize that assets do not always have to be sold to comply. Many investment assets can be moved 'as they are' into a non-IRA account at market value thus avoiding unnecessary sales charges and the loss of a worthy investment.

Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel Piano Music.......2007-10-03

The pieces in the book were fine pieces, and discovering the style of Mendelssohn's sister was interesting. The annoyance in this book was that the chords were improperly marked. This means that the printed page showed an arpeggio with accidentals, but frequently the accidental would be marked on only ONE of the two occurences of that note in the arpeggio! I had problems throughout the entire book locating missing accidentals in chords that involved more than one octave! Then I kept having to add the accidentals!

Excellent Teaching Tool!.......2006-10-14

This book is special because it is one of the few books on classical, women composers aimed at middle school students. It explains in clear prose Fanny Mendelssohn's life and why she was not as famous as her brother, even though she was probably just as talented. Kamen examines the social structures that made it nearly impossible for women to perform and publish music without being looked at as plebeian. Although Kamen is slightly simplistic in her blaming of Fanny's brother, father and husband for her lack of fame, the book is aimed at middle school where a more complete, and therefor complex view of the situation might be too sophisticated for the average student to grasp. This book would be perfect for a middle school student interested in music to read, a music class to read as part of their study of the classical period, or any class that wishes to study the social status of women in the nineteenth century.

I found this book very helpfull, it tells about evry step of the home buying process. I found the details about closings and the chapter on agents especially enlightening. Knowing the rules behind "seller's agents" and "buyer's agent" is not as simple as it seems, something I would otherwise not have realized. Like a wonderful Broadway play, FOOTNOTES keeps its audience spellbound from the opening scene. This beautiful memoir is deeply moving, extremely interesting, and at times, delightfully humorous. All of Tommy Tune's stories, from dance recitals and backyard musical productions of his childhood to his personal relationships and professional triumphs in New York, are fascinating. Generosity and loyalty are abundant as he praises many who have influenced and supported his artistry as well as those who have contributed to his personal sense of well-being. In the theatre, Tommy Tune has always enlightened us with beauty and truth, and he does it again in this book as he bares his soul so we can see the truth in his heart. What we discover is a caring, compassionate man of integrity who also happens to be an artistic genius. I didn't want this book to end. ....

Not what most theatre buffs would hope for.......2000-04-14

As one of the last important figures in 20th Century musical theatre, Tommy Tune was part of many important shows. One would hope his autobiography would include at least some insight into his performing and directing techniques -- but such is not the case here. As for his personal life, Mr. Tune shares a great deal -- but it is hard to rely on the frankness of someone who seems to change his sexual preferences as easily as most of us change clothes. And the chapter discussing the woman he wronged but refuses to name is so obvious in who it refers to that the author's sincerity rings false. Some interesting anecdotes and photos not found elsewhere, but overall a great disappointment.

A Piece of Tommy Tune's Heart.......1999-12-02

Footnotes was one of the most honest and heartwarming memoirs I have ever read. Tommy Tune's honesty and openness with his readers is incredible. He has definately shared a part of himself with all of us. This kind and generous man is tops with me. While reading Footnotes I laughed, cried, and truly came to know this wonderful man. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

This is a wonderful book. It is written with such a casual and relaxed tone. It tells of Tommy's professional experiences and all of the wonderful people he has worked with including Twiggy and Lucie Arnaz. A wonderful "must'have" book.
