A Good Primer for the General Public........2003-06-05
When I read 'Depression Proof Your Future' I realized it was a good primer for the general public to learn about financial and economic cycles and problems. Since this is an area I've not studied at all, it was an interesting overview of the story of economic downturns and problems. I am far more familiar with investing principles and financial management and Professor Horatio has some excellent strategies for getting out of debt, paring expenses, learning to be self-sufficient, and acquiring wealth. He's packed a lot of information into this slim volume, and the wise reader would do well to read this book several times in order to learn all the details offered. It's never too late to take control of your own financial affairs.
Depression Proof Your Future.......2003-04-28
An interesting and insightful book. For anyone interested in their financial future, this is a must read. Gives quite a history of money and the depresssion and how to avoid financial problems in the future.
Depression Proof Your Future.......2003-04-23
Depression Proof Your Future is a survival manual for the common man and a must-read for all in these troubled times. It should be given wide publicity because it is a clear exposition of steps we can take personally in order to safeguard ourselves in the event of devastating downturns in our economy. This book provides survival guidelines by carefully and lucidly drawing on both ancient and recent history of former economic collapses as well as drawing on economic theory to reach clear and compelling recommendations for the common man. It is written so well that it should become part of the general education of all people who need to demystify the pronouncements of the high priests of politics and economics. The book removes the mystery of economic cycles, currency, devaluation, inflation, and deflation through an effective use of examples that clearly depict the history of money, the actions of politicians and their capitalist allies responsible for the inevitable cycles of boom and bust, and ways in which the common man can survive the hard times ahead. Other themes explored include how our economy works, how to cope with runaway inflation, and the energy crunch.
I strongly urge reading of this powerful survival manual for the common man.

Book Description
In this 8-CD audio edition (playing time: about 11 hours), the voices of Dr. Walter Edgar and Anita Rosenberg bring to life the members of the William Bull Pringle family of Charleston, South Carolina during the Civil War era.
Born to affluence and opportunity in the South's Golden Age, Mary Motte Alston Pringle (1803-1884) represented the epitome of Southern white womanhood. Her husband was a wealthy rice planter who owned four plantations and 337 slaves. Her thirteen children included two Harvard scholars, seven world travelers, a U.S. Navy war hero, six Confederate soldiers, one possible Union collaborator, a Confederate firebrand trapped in the North, an expatriate bon vivant in France, and two California pioneers. Mary's World illuminates in lavish detail the world and psyche of this wealthy, well-educated, well-intentioned woman and her family from the antebellum South.
During the Civil War, Mary and her husband, William, stood helpless as two sons were killed, another was driven insane, their slaves were freed, and the world as they knew it was swept away by a hurricane of social change. In her own words, Mary tells us about the joys, sorrows, frustrations, and terrors she and her family faced in nineteenth-century Charleston. This intimate, visceral biography was drawn directly from over 2,500 pages of Mary's handwritten letters, journals and diaries, none of which, she could have imagined, would ever be read by strangers. Therein lies their power.
Readers also learn about the vastly different lifestyles, food, clothing, and experiences of their slaves. Mary's World also pays special attention to Cretia Stewart, Mary's favorite servant, Cretia's husband, Scipio, and their free descendants, some of whom worked for Mary's grandchildren well into the twentieth century. How Mary, William, their children, and slaves lived before the Civil War, clung desperately to life in the eye of the maelstrom, and coped - or failed to cope -- with its bewildering aftermath is the story of this book. The letters and images they left behind offer priceless insights into the anguished roots of Southern social history.
Customer Reviews:
touching, fascinating, personal view of the Antebellum South.......2006-08-04
Mary's World helped me to understand life in the Antebellum South and the culture that thrived on slavery. But it also showed the North's response to winning the Civil War, which was anything but forgiving. It was a thrill to see the Miles Brewton House and the St. Michael's Cemetary on my recent visit to Charleston, and to feel the connection with the Mottes, Alstons, and Pringles.
A family of slaveowners........2005-04-23
The book is well written and entertaining. The story was nicely presented around the letters of Mary Pringle. All the similar names of the characters make it a little confusing. A nice reference chart showing the relationship of the characters should be included at the beginning of the book. Did the author hide some things to make the family look better? I wonder. It's hard for a Northerner to muster up a lot of sympathy for this family of slave owners. Perhaps Julius, who likely became a Unionist, was the real hero of the family. It's ironic that the South nearly destroyed our country in the 1860's, but is saving it today.
Mary's World: A Review.......2005-01-14
In Mary's World Richard N. Cote has succeeded admirably where so many others have tried and yet missed the mark. With his succinct style and exceptional organizational skills he has laid bare the thoughts, emotions and lives of Mary Pringle, her family and their slaves, and done so in a way that has given us a book
that is informative as well as enjoyable. By putting their lives
into context with the times Mr Cote has given the reader not only the opportunity to learn what they thought and felt but the ability to understand why they thought and felt the way they
did. This book will appeal to historians and the average reader
alike.
It took me only 2 days to read Mary's World and I found myself
so absorbed that when interrupted I was momentarily confused to find I wasn't in 19th century Charleston.
A MUST READ.......2004-12-14
FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN ANTEBELLUM CULTURE AND THE CIVIL WAR, THIS IS A MUST READ. EVEN FOR THOSE WHO AREN'T A STUDENT OF THE ERA, "MARY'S WORLD" IS STILL A FASCINATING GLIMPSE OF THE LIFE OF AN ELITE SOUTHERN PLANTER FAMILY. TAKEN FROM FAMILY PAPERS, THE STORY OF THE PRINGLES IS A FIRST HAND ACCOUNT OF THEIR INNERMOST THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS.
THE READER GETS TO WATCH WILLIAM BULL AND MARY ALSTON PRINGLE'S CHILDREN GROW UP. BY THE END OF THE BOOK YOU FEEL AS IF YOU HAVE KNOWN THEM ALL. I DREADED FINISHING THE BOOK BECAUSE I FELT AS IF I WAS LEAVING OLD FRIENDS.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND MAKE TIME FOR THIS BOOK. REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU ARE AN "ANTEBELLUM-OPHILE" LIKE ME OR NOT, THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK.
Great Book!.......2004-12-07
I found this book in Charleston on vacation after touring this home. I loved this book! Now I want to visit again because I am so much more invested. I read this book for pure pleasure, and di it deliver! One doesn't need to visit the south to enjoy, the book takes you there. It gives such insight to the era and history the reader gets pulled right in.

Wyatt Overview and Undersight.......2000-10-24
An excellent portrait of one of progressive music's founding fathers. "Wrong Movements" is a bit by bit and piece meal anthology, if you will, put together to give the reader a firm background of Roberts history. Begining with the antics of Soft Machine and running through to 1988 or there about, "Wrong Moments" shares through newspaper reproductions and clippings, the view from press releases and reviewers of his recorded output. With a bit more commentary from the author, this could have been a bit more insightfull, but this reader is greatful for any information on Mr. Wyatt. Highly recommended for beginners and great for those already aware.
Book Description
In his old age, Plenty-coups (1848–1932), the last hereditary chief of the Crow Indians, told the moving story of his life to Frank B. Linderman, the well-known western writer who had befriended him. Plenty-coups is a classic account of the nomadic, spiritual, and warring life of Plains Indians before they were forced onto reservations. Plenty-coups tells of the great triumphs and struggles of his own life: his powerful medicine dreams, marriage, raiding and counting coups against the Lakotas, fighting alongside the U.S. Army, and the death of General Custer.
This new edition allows readers to appreciate more fully the accomplishments and rich legacy of Plenty-coups. A previously unpublished essay by Linderman tells of his meeting and working with the chief. An introduction by Phenocia Bauerle and Barney Old Coyote Jr., both members of the Crow Nation, speaks to the enduring importance of Plenty-coups for the Crow people in the twenty-first century; an afterword by Timothy P. McCleary, also of the Crow Nation, highlights the pivotal role Plenty-coups played during the early reservation years after the buffalo had gone; an essay by Celeste River examines the special relationship between the old chief and Linderman; a map of Plenty-coups's world highlights places named in the story; a glossary of Crow words and concepts found in the story draws upon the latest orthographic standards and contemporary translation; and a photo gallery showcases both Plenty-coups at different stages of his life and unforgettable scenes of his world.

Plenty-coups: Chief of the Crows .......2007-07-15
This biographical information about Plenty-coups, the last principal chief recognized by the Crow, was originally compiled and published in the 1930's by Linderman. This book is the third reprint of the original story and contains a new introduction by Barney Old Coyote jr. and Phenocia Bauerle. An afterward by Timothy P. McCleary describes Plenty-coups' numerous contributions to both Native and national communities after the decline of the bison herds.
Linderman first met Plenty-coups in 1892, after leaving the Flathead Reservation where the author had spent time trapping and cow herding. During this chance meeting, Linderman impressed Plenty-coups with his ability to sign-talk and was given the name Sign-talker. Over forty years later, Linderman was given the opportunity to interview the Crow Chief and write his biography.
In these interviews, Plenty-coups was very open and candid about every aspect of his life and the traditional life of the Crow people. He discussed in detail his vision quest journey and the visions that he received during this event. He also spoke in great detail about raids that he had been on and how his spiritual guides aided and protected him in a number of difficult situations. The only topic Plenty-coups refused to discuss was the events that occurred after the decline of the bison herds. This fact is quite unfortunate as Plenty-coups was highly vocal in both Native and national issues until his death.
As the focus of early Native American research was on creating culture histories, personal stories of traditional lifeways such as the one described in this biography are uncommon. Showing a balanced, realistic view of a Native chief as both a strong warrior and a spiritual man is a situation that rarely occurs, even now. However, the portions of this book that most impressed me were the detailed recollections of Plenty-coups's vision quest and his open conversations about his visions and his spiritual helpers. I have never read a better first hand account of these events. I also was thrilled with Plenty-coups' clear explanations of the somewhat complicated Crow kinship system and marriage rules.
Plenty-coups is an amazing biography that will be enjoyed as a recreational read. Nonetheless, this book also contains important rare incites into the lives of traditional Crow men. Thus, it is suitable for those interested in learning a little about traditional Native life as well as those researchers looking for detailed information about the changing lifeways, traditions, and belief systems of the Crow during this transitional period. This book contains unprecedented candid information from a viewpoint rarely recorded presented in an entertaining, easy to read, yet meaningful way. That the author also wrote a book on the female perspective from the same Native group (see review of Pretty-shield) simply adds to the potential importance of this resource.
A Glimpse Into The Life of a Truly Great Chief.......2007-07-07
I wouldn't call this book your typical sequential biography, it's just Chief Plenty Coup's recollections of some of the personel events that occurred during his life. It's like listening to the stories of your father, or grandfather. Mr. Linderman also adds in bits of information about the Crow way of life.
I have read a few books on the general history of Native Americans, but I am finding myself leaning towards books that deal with specific tribes, or individuals. It is even more interesting when the book, like this one, has the views, or stories from someone who has actually lived the life.
I highly recommend this book!
An Amazing Adventure.......2007-06-29
I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy read but very insightful. I enjoyed the wisdom of the Native American and find it interesting that for so many of us we view the Native American culture as backward or uncivilized. Americans have a lot to learn about life and our Native Americans may be just the people to teach us. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. I found this book through the Museum at Central School in Kalispell MT. Thank you Gil Jordan, Executive Director.
A Treasure of Real History - Beyond "Dances with Wolves".......2007-06-20
I can't say enough good things about this book. Originally written almost 70 years ago, here we have the life story in detail of a key figure of 19th century Native America. There is no flowery, new-age like embellishment; no underlying PC romanticism or latent anti-Indian bias. The narrative is essentially a transcription of Plenty Coups own words describing his life and the culture of the Crows and other northern plains tribes. The good, bad, beauty and harshness of the times are vividly (and accessibly) captured for the reader. This is NOT DRY READING by any means :-) Plenty Coups tells it like it really was - tough people in a tough environment. A MUST for Native American history buffs. Highly Recommended.
Role Model for All of Us.......2005-10-09
The autobiography of Chief Plenty-Coups is a fascinating account, not just of Plains Indian life, but of the rise of a leader who was brave, honest, and fair in all aspects of his life. Here was a man who learned to compromise and build a consensus when acting for his people. This should be required readng for all children, and for any adult who has aspirations as a leader of children, of a community, or a nation. If physical prowess and aggressive territoriality are really to be the hallmarks of our society's heroes, then let us have a role model that adds to those qualities expert diplomacy and a deep caring for the nation's children. That this book is in his own words makes it more powerful and persuasive. While this edition does not have the illustrations of the 1935 school text edition, it does have photographs, a map, and background information about Plenty-Coups' life and importance in our nation's history.
