    Book Description

Understanding financial management is critical in today's global marketplace. Financial Management: A Practical Guide to Value Creation is designed for general managers, senior functional managers, and business students interested in the practice of financial management. The book introduces innovative techniques in a practical, intuitive way, but assumes no prior knowledge beyond a rudimentary understanding of financial statements. Unlike most texts, which are conceptual in nature, Financial Management: A Practical Guide to Value Creation ties concepts to reality. In fact, the concepts covered in each chapter are applied to an actual company, which reinforces the reader's understanding of the subject matter. Practical examples are also integrated to demonstrate how the financial tools and techniques can be used to improve the decision making process.

Financial Management: A Practical Guide to Value Creation underscores the principles of financial management, which are applicable to all companies. The book is organized into five sections. Part I begins with an articulation of the two basic questions that financial managers face: (1) What investments should the company make and (2) how should these capital expenditures be financed? In order to make sound investment decisions, the financial manager must be able to conduct a detailed financial analysis of the company. Through the analysis, the manager will develop an understanding of the company's past performance and the various forms of financing available for future endeavors. One of the first steps in conducting a detailed analysis is deconstructing the financial statements. As a result, Chapter 2 explains and illustrates how a company's financial statements are constructed, deconstructed, and interpreted.

Part II reviews the techniques managers use to assess a company's current "financial health," plan its future development, and make decisions designed to improve its probability for success. Chapter 3 demonstrates the methods used to conduct a detailed financial analysis of a firm's liquidity position, operational efficiency, and management effectiveness. Chapter 4 explores financial planning and forecasting with particular emphasis on managing a company's growth potential.

Time value of money is the process of calculating the value of an investment yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Time value concepts underlie virtually every topic in financial management, including capital budgeting and capital structure. In fact, a rudimentary understanding of these concepts is needed when evaluating different capital expenditures and determining the most appropriate financing source. For this reason, Chapters 5 and 6 in Part III are dedicated to time value of money.

Part IV demonstrates how managers make investment decisions (i.e., capital budgeting) that maximize the firm's value. Chapter 7 explores the net present value (NPV) rule and how to apply this technique to make value-enhancing investment decisions. A number of alternative approaches, including the internal rate of return (IRR), payback period, and profitability index are also explored. Chapter 8 illustrates how to estimate the cash flow generated by an investment proposal and assess the proposal's capacity to create value. Chapter 9 demonstrates the methods used to estimate the cost of capital, which is used as a hurdle rate in evaluating the cash flows generated by the investment.

The value added through effective investment and financing decisions will make the company more appealing to investors. Part V provides the measures of risk and return used by a company's various capital providers to evaluate firm performance.

    KEY FEATURES:
Focused Content. The text emphasizes the concepts of financial management most relevant to sound decision making. Each topic is applied to an actual company, which reinforces the reader's understanding of the subject matter. Experiential Exercises. Real world exercises provide insight into the realities of financial management and guide the reader through the decision making process. Cutting-edge Software. The accompanying CD-ROM contains a trial version of Crystal Ball Pro, a popular software used in financial management, as well as Excel templates needed to complete the end-of-chapter problems and cases.

An AudioBook to be treasured by all history buffs: the companion volume to the ABC TV documentary.

This remarkable biography presents Abraham Lincoln as we have never before seen him.  The insightful and vibrant narrative draws extensively on diaries, letters, and other primary sources to provide a remarkably close-up view of Lincoln: the boy, the homespun politician, the president, the military leader, the man with his family.  Philip B. Kunhardt, Jr., Philip B. Kunhardt III and Peter W. Kunhardt give us the fascinating life - from birth to death - of the extraordinary man who was the 16th president of the United States.

      5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.......2001-03-16

Kudos to the publisher Knopf and all involved on the quality of this book. The reproduction of the 19th century photographs is first rate. The sepia toned image of the great man inside the front cover is exceptionally gorgeous - just breathtaking.

John Updike said Knopf publishes the most physically beautiful books in America, and this book leads me to believe he's right.

This is not a comprehesive, scholarly biography of Lincoln, nor does it pretend to be. But the text reads well, and the Lincoln photographs are beautiful, all-inclusive and presented in sound written context. The large size of the book works particularly nicely here. Well done!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant narrative and photography of Abraham Lincoln.......2000-12-14

Philip B. Kunhardt is to be highly commended for this outstanding photographic history of Abraham Lincoln. Not only are the photographs captivating, but the narrative of Lincolns life and the important events during his lifetime are interesting and enhance this book. Many interesting stories go along with the photographs of Lincoln from his 40's to his last days, however the most interesting part in my opinion is the month by month account of his presidency and the important events that occured. So much about the man has been written, but until this book was published not as many photos of President Lincoln were circulated or published. Just as important, are the events and stories which swirled around Lincoln. From his habits and humor to his history changing decisions are written in clarity and interesting form. His life and his loves are given with compassion, and his impossible losses of his sons and his mentally unballanced wife Mary Todd Lincoln is given unflinchingly. The last chapter of the book is about the assassination and the controversy surrounding Lincoln's remains, a very interesting and informative chapter to close with. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in U.S. History or 19th Century U.S. History.

      4 out of 5 stars Sumptuous Photography.......2000-08-05

The quality of this book is what first grabs you. The paper is thick, glossy and has weight, it reproduces 19th century photographs beautifully. The text is ancillary and never intrudes upon the primary focus here, which are the photographs of Lincoln, his family and the people who shaped his extraordinary life. The text illuminates and expands upon the photographs, giving dates and other pertinent information.

If you're looking for a full-scale biography of Lincoln, look elsewhere, this is primarily a visual treat and one of the better photographic compilations on any President.

5 out of 5 stars draws on an incredible variety of sources..........2000-06-08

...that deal with President Lincoln; includes some excellent photography and many good quotations. What an incredible fellow he was.

5 out of 5 stars You must have this book.......2000-04-18

This is a fantastic and beautiful book--oversized, loaded with more photos than you've ever seen in a Lincoln book, and worthy of coffee-table display. But it's not just a picture book. Each page is jam-packed with text, including an account of a dream Lincoln had about his own assassination. You'll definitely want the hardback version. Even if you've got a hefty collection of Lincoln lore, you must add this book to your shelves!

Freedman gives the reader a great detailed history of Abraham Lincoln. He tells of his childhood as well as his years in office and command. Abe did wondrous things and people thought he was a extremely excellent president. This is a great book for parents and teachers to get their child engaged in learning about past American presidents.

          Book Description

Originally published in six volumes, which sold more than one million copies, Carl Sandburg’s Pulitzer Prize winner Abraham Lincoln won praise as the most noteworthy historical biography of his generation. He later distilled his monumental creation into one volume that critics and readers alike consider his greatest work of nonfiction.
Magnificently produced, this special abridged and illustrated edition features foil stamping on the spine, an imitation cloth case, high quality paper, and collaged endpapers in four-color sepia. More than 250 engaging and often rare historical photos, along with descriptive captions, allow readers to visualize Lincoln’s journey from country lawyer to perhaps the most influential and beloved president of the United States. The fascinating pictures—many in color—provide a very intimate glimpse into Lincoln’s world. You’ll see his personal handwritten copy of the Gettysburg address, the gun that tragically ended his life, as well as a variety of rarely-viewed paraphernalia and personal effects. The images come from such notable artists as the esteemed Civil War photographer Matthew Brady, Joseph Boggs Beale, Currier and Ives, and Alexander Gardner.

            Book Description

The official biography of Abraham Lincoln, who was the sixteenth President of the United States of America. It is a definitive resource on Lincoln and his times, and was written by John Hay and John George Nicolay. John Milton Hay (1838-1905) was an American statesman, diplomat, author, journalist, and private secretary and assistant to Abraham Lincoln. Hay was born in Salem, Indiana, of Scottish ancestry, raised in Warsaw, Illinois, and educated at Brown University (1858), where he joined Theta Delta Chi. In 1861 he was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Illinois. He began his public career as a secretary to Abraham Lincoln at age 22, while technically a clerk in the Interior Department. Hay was present when President Lincoln died after being shot at Ford's Theatre. Hay and John G. Nicolay wrote a formal 10-volume biography of Lincoln and prepared an edition of his collected works. He was the author of Castilian Days (1871), Pike County Ballads and Other Poems (1871), The Bread-Winners (1884), Abraham Lincoln: A History (1890), and Poems (1897). John George Nicolay (1832-1901) was an American (German born) biographer and secretary of Abraham Lincoln. In 1838, he immigrated to the United States with his father, attended school in Cincinnati, and later went to Illinois, where he edited the Pike County Free Press at Pittsfield. Then he became assistant to the Secretary of state of Illinois and while in this position met Abraham Lincoln.

This book was, doubtless, a factual account of abraham lincoln's life, but unfortunately had more pictures than content. frequently cluttered with irrelevent facts, it is somewhat difficult to sort out what is important. Not the best book if you're doing research, but the pictures are good for just looking at and reading the captions.

There are hundreds of games, many of them deeply annotated by top players. Rubinstein was an endgame virtuoso and studying the games will increase the playing strength of players at all levels. There is also interesting historical research, including accounts of how the Rubinstein family survived the holocaust in Brussels during World War II. This book is an excellent work of scholarship.

                      Book Description

The practice of rich countries providing financial assistance to developing countries has become increasingly controversial. Foreign aid is now characterized more by its failures than its successes, making foreign assistance budgets easy targets for politicians. In academic and policy circles the claim is made that foreign aid has outlived its usefulness. The original essays in Transforming Development take a more optimistic view, and instead of foreseeing the end of foreign aid, show how it might be revived.

The essays in this volume argue that foreign aid is, first and foremost, a humanitarian enterprise. The contributors suggest ways to reform the practice of development assistance including new approaches to development financing and novel strategies for increasing the effectiveness of foreign aid, maintaining that development assistance must continue to receive donor support.

This forward-looking collection is an ideal text for undergraduate and graduate courses in international development and a valuable resource for practitioners and policy-makers in the field.

This book is directed toward first time home buyers. It was a very good guide for me when I was looking to purchase a home. It explains all the steps in easy to understand terms, and explains all the terminolgy very well. After reading this book you will know what you must do to prepare for your home purchase. You will know what to look for in an agent, you will know what to expect when you talk to a lender. The process will no longer be intimidating. Definately worth the little money you pay for the book.

                            Book Description

With a simplicity as disarming as it is frank, Left Handed tells of his birth in the spring "when the cottonwood leaves were about the size of my thumbnail," of family chores such as guarding the sheep near the hogan, and of his sexual awakening. As he grows older, his account turns to life in the open: nomadic cattle-raising, farming, trading, communal enterprises, tribal dances and ceremonies, lovemaking, and marriage.
As Left Handed grows in understanding and stature, the accumulated wisdom of his people is made known to him. He learns the Navajo life founded upon principles: the necessity of honesty, foresightedness, self-discipline. The style of the narrative is almost biblical in its rhythms; but biblical, too, in many respects, is the traditional way of life it recounts.

This book of a man's life has a rhythm that is set to a sheep's cadence. I had to read it twice to get the chronological aspect of it. The clues to how a nomad's life was led are sometimes plain and sometimes hidden. I found the ending to be abrupt.

4 out of 5 stars not just a dry anthro text... interesting life story!.......2003-02-17

This text has some very interesting (and vivid) sexual accounts, also marriage practices, family relations, etc. It's a quite interesting life story and a funny sidenote: there are obvious places where the ... author edited the Dine' autobiographer's language because it might be perceived by some as derrogatory. Overall, I like this account very much!! ...

                            3 out of 5 stars A good anthropology book.......2000-04-05

I had to read this book for my intro to Anthropology class in college. I thought that was ok for additional anthropology reading, but I would never read this book for fun. It's the story of a Navajo from his childhood to adulthood and all of the experience and things you must go through when living in a culture that moves around a lot. It was interesting in the fact that while studying various cultures, it was an autobiography of what another culture was actually like and how in Left Handed's culture, everyone is related. It a good book for understanding other cultures, especially for a class like anthropology.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book!.......1998-01-30

This is a great book. I first read it about thirty years ago when I was in college. The book reminded me of that part of my childhood spent growing up on the Navajo Nation, when my parents were school teachers there. The book is an anthropological document of the first order but it reads like a novel and is full of humor and pathos. It shows the joy of childhood in a 'simple' culture while painting vivid images of that culture. While the book struck a resonant chord with me, its appeal is universal. It is a mystery, because the unexpectedness of real life is in every page, but it is free of horror and full of affection. I would like to see the book reprinted in hard cover so I can add it to my library in proper form, though I still have the thirty year old paperback.
