4 out of 5 stars Disagree strongly with previous negative reviews.......2002-05-16

I think the author was treated unfairly in the some of the earlier reviews. They must have been referring to the older editions of the book. The current edition of the book does talk about the new 529 plans without becoming an accounting textbook. What I like about Davis' treatment of the subject is the "you can do it yourself" approach instead of being a referral tool to financial advisors. Especially valuable is the worksheet on federal financial aid which gives one the ability to see how changes in one's finances can change computed financial need. Most financial aid websites just give you a grand total without explaining how the numbers were calculated. This isn't a book for those who love mind-numbing detail, but it is a good basic guide for getting started with a college savings plan.

5 out of 5 stars This is a new edition, published in September 2001.......2001-12-12

This book is terrifically up to date. I wonder how the three people who gave it one star reviewed it five months before it was published. If they'd read the current edition (or any. I wonder just who these three people were who all happened to have reviewed the book on April 6. I smell a rat.), they would have found it to be wonderfully current, well written, comprehensive. Anyone with kids--whether teens approaching college or tots--would benefit from this book.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time or Money on Tired Stuff.......2001-04-13

Should be called "Financing College in the 1990s." But it's now 2001 and a lot of the suggestions in this old clunker of a book just don't hold water any more. Lots of free web sites run by state treasurer's office will give you current advice on newer college investing plans and it's free. Also check out Nellie Mae or Sallie Mae which are not-for-profit organizations that arrange for money so that kids or adults can afford to go to college. Skip this book however because it's N-O-T worth it.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly Written and Stale.......2001-04-07

I didn't notice that this insipid book was published more than three years ago and a lot has changed since then!

Tax-advantaged college savings investments have improved--some have even been created--since this stale book was written. Even qualifying for financial aid isn't what it was back in the old days when this book was published.

This author should either update this relic or stop selling out of date advice. In the meantime check out the multitude of free web sites that give better and also current advice.

1 out of 5 stars NOT HELPFUL -- Out of Date Advice.......2001-04-07

Many of the college savings plans as well as the rules for qualifying for financial aid have changed substantially since this book was written three years.

This old book caused my kids to lose out on money that they could have gotten:

    1) It doesn't even mention many of the new and improved college savings and investing plans that are now available.

    2) And the rules for qualifying for financial aid have changed significantly since this book was published so this book omits viable options.

5 out of 5 stars i am falling .... through the continuum of time.......2006-02-05

As an amateur poet, I included as the introduction and main theme of one of my poems a quote my brother wrote in a letter in 1969. Since the quote is not mentioned in his book, and since I believe it is most relevant to the title and theme of the book, I will include it here: "I am `one falling.' I fall from no origin; I fall to no destination. Arms outstretched in an eternal embrace of a benign reality, I merely fall. I hope for no end I shall never achieve; nor do I regret the loss I never shared. But if only one person would extend his hand that we might not merely fall; but that, even if only for a fleeting moment, we might coincide. This is value; this is happiness." When I read my brother's book, besides being able to directly relate to most of the events, since I was present at many of them, I was moved by the emotion portrayed on certain occasions. My brother has always been a philosopher and one whose life has been highly influenced by logic. He usually keeps his emotions in check (as much as humanly possible) -- or maybe, to be more accurate, keeps them hidden from others so they become a very personal testimony and tribute of his feelings towards others and events which have influenced his thoughts and motivated his actions. I remember one time, many years ago, when I visited my brother in Wichita, Kansas, we sat quietly listening to records (one of which was an album by Don Mclean). We never spoke while the music played, yet enjoyed each other's company and experienced that enjoyment through the music and the silence of our thoughts. It wasn't necessary to talk -- we knew each other so well; it was only necessary to enjoy each other's presence and together experience an existential bond through the music which lifted our minds and souls to a higher level of spiritual union.

I highly recommend this book to others -- it is very well written. It shows an individual struggling with his own thoughts, perception and understanding of the world. Only through philosophy does he come to an understanding of this world and his role in it. I'll end with a quote from my poem referred to above, as a fitting synopsis of my brother's book: "i am falling ...... endlessly falling through the continuum of reality / then i reach out and touch another person / and time stands still as our lives converge . . . we stand together on a high plateau / embracing the world / confronting our enemies / always strengthened by our friendship . . . "

5 out of 5 stars The Anne Frank Of Hungary.......2002-11-17

Eva Heyman was like Anne in many ways: A budding teenager, spirited and observant of the world around her. Anne and Eva both began diaries when they were thirteen. Tragically, both did not survive the war. Like Anne, only one of Eva's parents survived the Holocaust, her mother Agnes, but out of guilt for not attempting to save her daughter's life she committed suicide in 1949. Read this book.

                                5 out of 5 stars 'I don't want to die because I've hardly lived'.......2007-07-26

Eva Heyman was born Nagyvarad, Hungary in 1931. She lived with her grandparents as her parents were divorced. Here she writes of her life in 1944, with her friends and family, before being deported to her death, at the age of 13 , because she was Jewish.
We read of a lively and intelligent 13 year old girl growing up in a assimilated middle class Jewish family, and how their security was removed after the Nazi invasion of Hungary, leading to theior poverty, then being forced to the camps and finally being deported to Auschwitz, where only Eva's mother Agens Szolt survived.
This diary is a testament to one of the million Jewish children, murdered by the Nazis, and her strong desire to live.
Eva writes time and time again : 'I want to live at all costs' and 'I don't want to die because I've hardly lived'. This edition includes an introduction, a foreword by Eva's mother Angnes, an appendix consisting of letters by her grandmother's former Christian maid, Mariska Szabo and her Austrian nanny Juszti.
Eva's mother Agnes who survived Bergen-Belseon tells of how Eva was sent to the gas chambers by josepf Mengele:
""A good-hearted female doctor was trying to hide my child, but Mengele found her without effort. Eva's feet were full of sore wounds. 'Now look at you', Mengele shouted, 'you frog, your feet are foul, reeking with pus! Up with you on the truck!' He transported his human material to the crematorium on yellow-colored trucks. Eyewitnesses told me that he himself had pushed her on to the truck."

Eva Heyman, thirteen-years-old, was gassed that same day, on October 17, 1944

This edition was translated from the Hebrew edition into English by Moshe Kohn and published by Yad Vashem in Israel.

The Introduction and Notes are by Judah Marton.

The autobiography of a very precocious Hungarian martyr. I was shattered. A beautiful life snuffed out by Nazi fiends. It is almost unbearable to read, but very necessary. Extremely moving.

                                Book Description

The workforce of the future promises to be very different from that of the past. A generation ago, there were few workers over the age of 65, but in the future we will see many more employees remain on the job longer than ever before. At the same time, as global markets grow more closely integrated, companies are having to reinvent the workplace, which requires more skilled, more reliable, and more flexible employees. Benefits for the Workplace of the Future explores how workforce and workplace changes are reshaping the form and design of employee benefits and what these trends portend for the future of compensation.

An increasingly diverse range of workers and new types of companies are forcing a redefinition of what it means to be an employee, what it means to offer someone a job, and how to compensate workers. These changes are spurring nontraditional benefits, such as child and elder care, flexible medical benefits, employee assistance programs, and investment education. Major developments in the pension and health care arenas provide new opportunities and challenges for rank and file workers as they are asked to take on more responsibility for their own benefits design.

Contributors to the volume--academics, employers, consultants, and policymakers--evaluate these trends and their implications. They chart new methods for developing benefits plans and provide assessments of past trends and clear-eyed forecasts for future benefit challenges. The book will be invaluable to those who seek to structure and benefit from well-designed compensation packages.

From Noteworthy Books in Industrial Relations and Labor Economics, Princeton University (July 2004):
"The essays in this volume examine how benefits and compensation packages will respond to the need for economic restructuring, demographic shifts and changes in the role of government versus private sector. The chapters in the first section deal with developments in the future workplace and outline the implications for benefit coverage and design. The authors in the second section look at challenges to benefits and compensation design such as recession and economic volatility, the interaction of business conditions with the slower labor growth predicted for the future, and the benefit effects of the evolving labor-management relationship. The case and sector studies in the last three chapters provide insights into specific company and sectoral practices."

                                          Book Description

Well over two million very qualified individuals mediate between high-level managers and other members of public agencies. These grossly underutilized "intermediary professionals" must become more empowered to reduce waste, malfeasance and other costly errors. Balk proposes an applied theory of public agency democracy designed to liberate the potential of its highly trained experts. The book begins by discussing professionals as power intermediaries and their necessary tensions with authority around matters of reform. Recognized dilemmas in the field of public administration are reviewed to demonstrate the need to resolve issues concerning public agency democracy. A model is then developed to incorporate democratic action with responses ranging from routine to whistle-blowing activities. The second part of the book shows why existing management orientations are not receptive to the need for agency democracy. Conventional orientations reject the paradoxical realities of government environments; therefore, ingrained beliefs about effectiveness and management authority are at times inappropriate. Management approaches to public service motivation lack sophistication. Four final chapters are devoted to techniques and approaches on the part of professionals to initiate change. These involve techniques to assess organizational predicaments, design resolutions and become constructively involved in processes of agency reform. Ways are proposed for professionals and others to institutionalize public agency democracy in government environments.

Federal Taxation of Real Estate Exchanges is a crash course in the art of the deferred real estate exchange. Learn easy steps to sell old real estate and buy new without paying federal income taxes by using IRS safe-harbor exchange rules. It's the definitive guide to taxation of real estate exchanges for real estate investors and serious professionals who are seeking a growing sophistication and appreciation of how powerful the deferred exchange is in the fast changing world of real estate investments.

Federal Taxation of Real Estate Exchanges was first born as a three-day continuing education seminar which author Rich Robinson wrote and taught to thousands of real estate agents, CPAs and investors from coast-to-coast. During this time Rich teamed up with real estate broker and Qualified Intermediary, Jim Maxwell. By combining Rich's years of experience as a CPA, writing and teaching federal taxation of real estate transactions and Jim's practical "street smart" knowledge and background in real estate exchanging, they created a new educational program presented at the National Association of Realtors® Annual Convention. This course is based on that highly successful program.

Abandoned by his father and raised by his mother during the Depression, Jimmy Dean learned early the values of hard work and faith. But no one could have imagined how far those values - and the saving grace of country music - would take the poor young man from Plainview, Texas. Now, Jimmy Dean and his wife, Donna, chronicle his amazing rise as a country singer and then as a phenomenal business success with the Jimmy Dean Meat Company.

                                                Book Description

During the past seventy-five years, Caxton Press has published a number of books which examine the United States through the eyes of people from other cultures. "From the Ganges to the Snake River: A East Indian in the American West", carries on that tradition.

Debu Majumdar was born and raised on the banks of India's Ganges River. Coming to America in his early twenties, he lived in the Eastern United States before moving to Idaho Falls, Idaho, in 1980. Debu quickly discovered that Southeast Idaho is a very different culture from anything he had previously experienced.

In this collection of essays which span two decades in the West, Debu deals with a variety of topics-from fishing, hunting and horses, to the Fourth of July, Mormon missionaries and Native Americans. He also describes experiences and problems encountered by fellow Indian Americans while adapting to life in America.

From The Ganges To The Snake River: An East Indian In The American West is an engaging, thought-provoking collection of essays written over a period of twenty years in which Debu Majumdar (who was born and raised on the banks of India's Ganges River) wrote while living in Idaho Falls, Idaho during the 1980s and 1990s. The essays cover everything from Mormon missionaries and Native Americas to fishing and horses. Highly recommended and totally engaging, these cultural essays include: First Idaho Winter; Idaho Trout; Fourth of July; Tiger Hunt; Hunting; Mountain River Ranch; The Missionaries; Be Crazy About; An Excursion on the River; Pollywog Pond; The Poets' Club; A Place to Hang Your Hats; Oh Calcutta; At the Windcave; The Ramayana; and Indians Across the Ocean

Debu's journey brings together many opposites: east and west, thoughts of adults on the young, old country -- new country, Hinduism -- Christianity, tradition and modernity. His odyssey takes him from an ancient land to a new one; sacred rivers flow through each, he creates himself anew as he moves between cultures. It is a voyage of discovery, but not just of places and environments and new friends and colleagues; there is an inner voyage that takes place too. In this kind of journey -- which takes place over decades, on several continents -- although most of these stories are set in Idaho in the last 20 years -- there is ample room for reflection, and doubt and crises of identity. Do I belong to one culture? Or another? Or does that question even have meaning any more? Not least of the gifts of this book is that as Debu ponders the changes that have come about in himself, among his fellow Indians who have come to the United States, and in everyone who has come to the American West, he sees himself in new ways, and we see ourselves in a new light too. That is a valuable gift.

Idaho and Calcutta. Himalayas and Tetron. Indians and Americans. Ganges and Snake river. All comes for a fascinating contiguity in all 16 episode composed by Debu Mojumder, an Indian from Calcutta transformed to American in Idaho Falls. He tales this story of transformation through different characters and creeds busy to establish their own identity. Along with the characters the nature, surrounding with all its content living or non living reacts in harmony. All are foreigner at some point. Episodes that can be shared by all in the global village.

5 out of 5 stars Comparing two different worlds of India and America.......2000-06-08

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. The author is an excellent observer of nature, and Idaho seems to be a beautiful part of the country with rivers and mountains and no pressures of population. The stories, which are autobiographical reminiscences, anecdotes, and thoughtful observations, are written in a frank, uncomplicated style and make a pleasant reading. Residents of Idaho would certainly enjoy them more for the local colour, but for those who don't know Idaho, the book might provide an incentive to visit the Snake River area.

Description of life in Calcutta, wonderfully depicting the sights, sounds and smells of the region, and some personal histories I found enjoyable, in particular the stories Oh, Calcutta, The Ramayana, and At the Windcave. In the last story, the author beautifully brings out the frustrations of an ambitious research scientist and compares his life with that of a relaxed scientific worker with interests outside the narrow limits of his speciality.

In one story, the author expresses himself on the topic of foreignness and feeling like an outsider. In these days of globalization, he suggests that a new educated class has emerged in the world, which has gone beyond regional boundaries and finds more commonality among themselves than among close neighbours. It is not the land that makes one feel foreign. It's not a place but something within oneself, an inborn thing.

The book is a real praise of Idaho and the reader can get easily absorbed. Those who don't know Idaho will also find something that they will appreciate and enjoy as I did.

The observations Debu Majumdar gleaned from uncannily remembered impressions of the past half century are truly original. I loved the story about the shopping expedition for a necklace in Calcutta, and the difference between savoring/planning/extending the essence of an excursion versus the haphazard, coma-like way we cruise through malls here in the U.S.

Majumdar's inner journeys and outer experiences in Idaho and Calcutta bring the reader to the heart of his reminiscences, and to the essence of their meaning.

When I first moved to Idaho from New York City, I had such a sweeping feeling of both loneliness and homesickness; Majumdar's essays capture all those irreconcilable feelings about never truly being a part of life in a new land and missing the life one had elsewhere. He seamlessly describes the transition from outsider to becoming part of one's adopted community, and knowing when it has become home. It is a fine book, and reminds one to savor the indelible adventures of life in Idaho."
