Awesome Book.......2006-07-03

This book gives a very good overview of everything that has to do with Missions: the Biblical foundations, the history and different strategies used to advance God's Kingdom. All writers are having a Southern Baptist and/or IMB background, so that might make the content a little colored, but it is still worth it.

It is a good book if you want to have a very broad yet thorough overview of what missiology is all about.

A wonderful story with unusually lovely art work!.......1999-05-18

As a parent of three avid readers ages, 5-11, I want to say what a wonderful book Ebbe and Flo is for kids of all ages! The art work in this story is unusually lovely and is not drawn "down " to kids, but rather lets children experience designs and colors usually reserved for adults - and yet the characters are warmly drawn with alot of humorous attributes as well. The story is totally engaging -my kids have read it repetitively!! The dialogue is fast and funny. The tension between the adventurous and fearless Flo (and how refreshing that these characteristics belong to the girl!!) and her brother, the timid Ebbe, is part of what gives the story it's momentum.My kids got very interested in salmon and their life cycles largely because the book is so great and the Fish Facts at the back were a great follow up. But perhaps most important in this story is the message that it is possible to find the courage and spirit to enjoy the sometimes perilous journey of life. I highly recommend this book !

How did Edward Elgar, a provincial violin teacher without any formal training in composition, write a choral masterwork--The Dream of Gerontius--that has become a classic, performed more often in his native Britain than any other choral work except The Messiah?

This book tells how Elgar came to write Gerontius, describes the work's first performance in Birmingham in 1900, recounts its subsequent history and explores the reasons for its continuing appeal. Edited by Geoffrey Hodgkins, the book combines materials from contemporary and archival sources with newly commissioned articles.

The thirty selections range from an intimate description of the Elgars at home at Birchwood Lodge, where much of Gerontius was composed, to a scholarly account of the libretto by Harvard musicologist Charles E. McGuire and a musical analysis by Andreas Friesenhagen.

There are memories of the Birmingham premiere by William Bennett, who sang in the chorus that day, and reviews of early performances. Critic Neville Cardus describes the unique style of recitative Elgar employs in Gerontius. John Barbirolli, one of the work's greatest interpreters, offers his views in a 1965 essay. Walter Essex compares recorded interpretations by Barbirolli, Adrian Boult, Benjamin Britten, Yevgeny Svetlanov, Simon Rattle and others. In a closing article, Elgar biographer Michael Kennedy examines the place of Gerontius in British music today.

We have been referring to Betsy's book with our Financial Service clients to help them discover how they would like to spend their life transition into a reduced work life or complete retirement. Betsy's book gives the reader insight into how they can design their own "next phase" from a hobbies, activities and emotional perspective. The excercises and exhibits bring them through a thought process and helps design what they truly want their retirement to be, what they don't want to do and helps to frame what is typically a topic we give very little thought to on a practical level. This book is ideal for three groups- baby boomers who would like to retire early or reinvent themselves in another career or business, pre-retirees who have approx. 5-7 years before retirement and those currently in retirement who are "out of sorts" and not feeling successful. Betsy uses insights and thought provoking questions which motivate the reader to take time and give careful thought to what may be the most rewarding time of our lives, and after all, we may be spending more time in retirement than we spent in our working years....

A Great Book on Retirement -- An Nothing to Do With Money..........2003-12-17

I had the pleasure of reading Betsy's manuscript before the book was published. It's a wonderful explanation of the changing nature of retirement and how each one of us can make it a special, unique and meaningful experience no matter what we choose to do. Some may "retire" from retirement and become active again in the workforce, perhaps as a volunteer, perhaps for financial support. Whatever you choose, this book helps you think through your personal changes, both physical and psychological, that the transition from more work to less (or no work) may bring.

The book covers topics such as planning ahead for the social, emotional, psychological and spiritual issues; developing good "retirement skills"; relocation; emotional fulfillment; structuring your day; family and social relationships; avoiding boredom, loneliness and depression; "flunking retirement"; and more.

Most retirement books talk to you about the money side of things. This book does not. It's well written, easy to read, and would make a great gift to your favorite "pre-retiree." I know it will be well used in my lending library at Planning For Life.

I'm surprised that there is no comment here already. Mr Hunt and the late Jack Brown have persued a dream of gathering together a comprehensive index of basic biographical facts and images of the senior grades of command of the Union Army following in the footsteps of Warner's study of Generals in Blue.
To date this has accomplished works on Brevet Brigadier Generals, the Colonels of the New England States and now of New York.

Having made a personal effort to develop battle books for several campaigns of the war, where I sought out images of the commanders of both armies, I am aware of the difficulties of collecting. The archivists of all the institutions I talked to always referred me to Mr Hunt, whose wake I followed.

The world of Civil War imagery is dissociative. There are large archives accounting for major collections. Some, such as the National Archives and Library of Congress are generally unlicensed and accessible. Others like the Eastman and Mesrve collections are private and subject to fee for the right to share use. A consequense of the diaspora of images is that assignation of a body of images to a scholarly question is fraught with issues of proprietary use.

Informative but dry.......2007-05-24

This book fills many gaps in the Von Trapp family saga as most people know it. It deals a lot with the family's life before Agathe's stepmother, Maria ever came into the picture. Even though it's a small book, there are quite a few pictures and much information here. Also, one gets a whole different slant on their story than the one Maria Von Trapp presents in her books. For these reasons, Von Trapp fans will find the book to be a good addition to their collection. However, I wouldn't call this one a "page-turner". Agathe's style of writing seems dull compared to the more appealing, fast-paced style of Maria Von Trapp's books.

Thank you, Agathe! To me your book is somewhat beyond critique. It's your life, your memories, your family story to tell. Thank you for sharing it with the rest of us.

Agathe aims to improve our understanding of the Von Trapp story as she lived it. She relays a family history that she didn't want to be lost to the illusion put forward by a popular movie. We particularly learn a lot about what went on before and after the time frame the movie centers around.

The beginning of the book goes a little slow as we learn of the impressive family tree. But that background of castles and wealth and close knit family do add to the total picture of this family that went from wealth to a hand-to-mouth existence. They wound up touring the globe singing to put food on the table and clothes on their backs. Not making the millions that rock stars do today! The book picks up in speed as it goes along and by the end one is tempted to say: "No, stop the movement of time! Don't let this family age and split up!"

In all the hearts of those that love "The Sound of Music" there is this illusionary Von Trapp family out there even now...still singing, touring, fleeing from a gathering Nazi storm, and building a new life. A close knit family overcoming all the obstacle's that a global depression and evil tyrant can toss their way. Always a tight family unit, always in their prime, never aging, never changing.

On our recent first-visit to the Von Trapp Inn (in Stowe Vermont) we almost expected to see the Von Trapp "Children" prancing about and singing down the halls of the inn. We knew those children were not going to be there to entertain us. But the heart can dream. If you visit the inn, you will discover that the hills aren't alive with the sound of music in Stowe Vermont, you have to bring the music along with you, in your heart, just as the Von Trapp family did over a half century ago.

Agathe reminds us that real life doesn't work the way of the movies. Children grow up. Lives must be lived and individual dreams followed. A nice chapter details how some become Doctor, Farmer, Businessman, or kindergarten Teacher.

I believe Agathe tells this story with love and faith in God. She saw the hand of God time and time again in events that happened. And in a family that large, there had to be many things she could have been very harsh about. There had to be some hard feelings between siblings and disputes that might last a life time. Agathe kept the Von Trapp dirty laundry mostly out of sight (where it belongs) and gave us highlights of a remarkable family in a remarkable time.

The von Trapp lives before, during and after Maria........2006-09-12

The von Trapp family as remembered by Agathe, the oldest von Trapp child. Agathe was in her mid 80s when she wrote this book. If you are looking for definitive details, this may not be the book for you. If you are a fan of the movie, The Sound of Music, and/or are interested in the real von Trapp family, I believe this is a must read. Maybe not a literary work of art, but fond memories and treasured pictures to be shared with those of us who want to learn more about this inspirational and musical family.

Has it's moments both good and bad.......2005-02-26

I enjoyed the details on the Von Trapp life and world before the Captain met Maria. Having read Maria's "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers", I was surprised to see that portions of this book read almost word for word like "Story" though.

I have heard from other sources that Maria was not a perfect mother and wife (and I think she admits as much in her later book "Maria") but I think that Agathe seemed to go out of her way to cast Maria as negatively as she could without outright slander.
