                      Book Description

Mark E. Neely, Jr., gives us the first compact biography of Abraham Lincoln based on new scholarship. Neely, a Pulitzer prize-winning historian, vividly recaptures the central place of politics in Lincoln's life. Richly illustrated, nuanced and accessible, written with attention to the age in which Lincoln lived, yet ever alert to universal moral questions, this book provides a portrait of Lincoln as an extraordinary man in his own time and ours.

                      Customer Reviews:

                      4 out of 5 stars A PRAGMATIC HERO.......2000-10-16

The Title of Professor Neely's biography of Lincoln is taken from Lincoln's second Message to Congress dated December 1, 1862. It is an inspiring phrase and an apt title for a Lincoln biography. Professor Neely's biography is good and solid in its analysis of Lincoln's life. It lacks, however, something of the eloquence and vision of the title and of Lincoln's words. We never learn why Lincoln considered the United States "the Last Best Hope of Earth" or what that can mean for our country today.

That said, this book is a good introduction to Lincoln and his Presidency. The book skims briefly over Lincoln's life before he became the 16th President. There are advantages to this, but the treatment of the Lincoln-Douglas debates and of the Kansas-Nebraska Act which led to them is too brief to help understand sucession and the Civil War which followed.

The book's treatment of Lincoln's relationship with his Generals and of the strategy of the War is probably the best single chapter. It has something to teach even those who are familiar with the military history of the war. The chapter on Lincoln as a pragmatic politician and on the 1864 campaign is also well done. The book treats the Emancipation Proclamation at length but to me anyway left something to be desired. (The text and some explicit treatment of it would help) and discusses the fate of Civil Liberties during the War and domestic development during the war in good but not dispositive detail.

If you are looking for an understanding of Lincoln and of the Civil War this is a good place to start but not to end. I suggest reading the book together with the complilation of Lincoln's own speeches and writings in the Library of America series.

4 out of 5 stars Good general biography.......2000-05-14

I really enjoyed this work. I felt it could have been more in-depth, but only so much can be expected from its relatively short length. It is a good resource and point of departure for the Lincoln historian or enthusiast, but I would recommend additional reading to fill in the gaps.

                        Book Description

Created in conjunction with one of the largest and most comprehensive exhibitions ever devoted to the life and achievements of Abraham Lincoln, this 80-page catalogue delves into Lincoln's struggle to ensure the survival of the American experiment in democracy. The book emphasizes his role as a war president. It also details Lincoln's determination to tackle the crucial issue of his time, slavery, and the profound effect this had on his life, and consequently, on the history of the United States.
The book examines the many roles Lincoln assumed during his lifetime, from lawyer, to president, to father. The importance of his debates with Stephen Douglas, the nature of his military leadership, and family life in the Lincoln White House are discussed in individual chapters.
Accompanying the text are more than 70 illustrations of the items that were on display from the three contributing collections, the Huntington Library, the Illinois State Historical Library, and the Louise and Barry Taper Collection. The illustrations range from autographed Lincoln documents to such personal items as his famous stove pipe hat and the gloves he was wearing the night of his assassination. The catalogue includes an exhibition checklist and a bibliography. The publication of the catalogue was made possible by the generous support of Nestle, USA.

Many of the well-known lawmen of the old west were as crooked as the men they went after. The men portrayed in this book, while less well known today, were good and honorable men. They are men that, in today's confusing world, can be held up as role models. The book is well written, in a style crafted to attract the mainstream reader.

These are stories of the unsung good guys - the ones you've probably never heard of. . . the ones without movie contracts. A "must" read for aficionados of the Old West.

This book tells the true stories of several western lawmen who can truely be called "The Good Guys". Most of the men in this book are not well known, but deserve to be. They hunted outlaws and stood up for what was right, which often led to wild shootouts. This book shows that the heroic western lawman is real and not just a work of fiction.

                            Book Description

The growth of the non-profit, voluntary or third sector has been widely recognized throughout the world. This text seeks to provide a definition and a common classification of the non-profit sector, while recognizing the great diversity of voluntarism internationally. The remainder of the text is devoted to country-by-country definitions of the sector in 13 representative states from the developed, developing and post-socialist worlds. Among the countries covered are: USA, UK, France, Germany, Japan, India, Brazil, Egypt and Hungary. The study demonstrates that the division of societies into public and private is too simplistic, and that a third sector with its own characteristic features and dynamics has already emerged as a powerful force in the global economy.

                              Book Description

The voluntary and non-profit sector is an important and emerging feature of Japanese society. It is a response both to the changing nature of this society and to political and social trends that have encouraged the Japanese government to see this sector as a potential provider of public services. It is also part of the emergence of 'civil society' in Japan. This book explores the roots of the societal challenges that voluntary and non-profit organisations face in Japan and evaluates their future impact on Japanese society. It is an essential text for any student of Japanese studies or the international non-profit sector.

                                Book Description

This volume provides the first systematic analysis of the Japanese nonprofit sector ever undertaken. Using a broad range of qualitative and quantitative data, the authors show that Japan has a much larger nonprofit sector than is recognized, even in Japan. Three-quarters of all university students attend nonprofit institutions, significant shares of hospital beds are in nonprofit institutions, and nonprofit agencies are active in the field of social services. Yet in comparative terms the Japanese nonprofit sector lags significantly behind that of other developed economies. One reason for this, the authors argue, is the generally hostile attitude the government has historically taken towards nonprofit organizations in Japan; nonprofit organizations wishing to attain legal status, have to secure the approval of a "competent Ministry," and this is often given begrudgingly or not at all. The nonprofit sector in Japan has only just begun to "flex its muscles" as an independent force in very recent years, and is now on the brink of a new phase in its development.

Among the stresses of modern living, moving is right up at the top of the list along with finding a job and looking for a place to live, and is often a part of both situations. The Steiners have assembled a complete guide to everything you could ever want to know (and a lot of things you may not have known you needed to know). Not content to simply outline the do's and don'ts of a typical move, they also rate moving companies, give useful tips on finding rentals, sublets, and trades, and even some sensible advice on long distance job hunting. They have taken a "no stone unturned" approach to moving in this fact-filled, thorough handbook, even including tips on getting settled in your new neighborhood! If you are facing or contemplating a move, this book will save you potentially thousands of dollars, and uncounted headaches and sleepless nights and aggravation. This may be the best guide ever written on the subject. --Mark Hetts

5 out of 5 stars Real complete advice.......2005-03-29

If you're thinking about moving, first read Clyde and hari Steiner's book, "Steiners' Complete How to Move Handbook, 2nd Edition." It will either discourage or enthuse you for the adventure ahead.

In easy-to-understand terms, the San Francisco authors explain what to expect when moving across town or across the nation. But this is not just a "how to hire a moving company" book (although the authors rate the major moving companies). The book addresses the family considerations, especially for children, as well as how to sell a home, how to obtain a mortgage on a new home and how to rent. Even information on how to break a lease is included.

The book's theme is taking control. Whether you're moving for a better location, a new job or retirement, the Steiners explain how to evaluate the situation and make the move as enjoyable as possible. If the book has a fault, it is the detailed references, which become almost too complete, but that's OK. Just skip the parts you don't need.

The authors offer sage advice for handling real estate agents, whether you are a home seller, buyer or both. For example, the authors recommend not more than a 90-day listing to sell your old home. They also caution about engaging a buyeFs agent to find your new home. In fact, they recommend renting for a few months to become acquainted with a new community.

Chapter topics include Taking Control From the Beginning; Family Issues; Fending Off Mr. Tax-man; Employment Considerations; Giving Up the Old Homestead; Your Plan-Ahead Strategy; Finding the New Homestead; Moving Company Tips and Traps; How to Arrive With Your Aunt Sally's Teapot and Your Sanity Intact; and Your Countdown Moving Timetable.

The outstanding appendix includes city and real estate agent evaluation charts, Internet sites, budgeting basics and other information resources.

                                  3 out of 5 stars Not-so-helpful moving book.......2005-01-01

After reading all the glowing reviews for this book and browsing reviews for similar publications I decided to purchase Steiner's. Oh what a mistake. Perhaps the other people who reviewed this book are friends of the authors? In all fairness, the lists and forms related to moving collected in the appendix of this book are helpful. However, the arrangement and format of information throughout the rest of this handbook seems almost haphazard. For example, the chapters on financing a move and home sales come well before a discussion of creating a move timeline or how to find housing. As another review mentions, Steiners has no index. And often important topics (like "trailing spouse syndrome") are mentioned, but never discussed in much depth (what are some practical ways of alleviating the problems associated with "trailing spouse syndrome"?) The authors claim this book addresses all types of moves: overseas, military, corporate relocation, recent college grads. But honestly, the handbook would be most helpful for seasoned adults working in the corporate sector who already own a house (note the frequency of phrases like "as everyone knows" and "obviously" in chapters on finances and home buying/selling). Rather than purchase this book, most people new to moving and finding a house would benefit more from using the "relocation wizard" at www.homefair.com and buying a book on home buying.

1 out of 5 stars Decent content, but..........2004-01-08

NO INDEX! IMHO, A book (especially one used for reference) is only as good as it's index. No index? No good.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Steiner's Complete How-To-Move Handbook.......2002-04-03

This is the most complete book on moving that I have ever read. It delivers the promised information in a very readable and entertaining text. Some of its best features include the great worksheets, charts, sample forms, lists and timelines which will assist anyone in planning and accomplishing a successful move. I have made 9 or 10 moves in the past 25 years and can say, unequivocably, that although I have read (and used) many nice "moving" books...this is absolutely the BEST!!!

4 out of 5 stars A great read but somewhat outdated unfortunately.......2001-06-29

The book covers almost all topics of moving in a thorough way that really conveys a lot of information in a short space. I planned to move from NJ to Florida & it really prepared me for the moving process. Although I didn't make the move, I did hire movers within NJ and I felt much more prepared having read this book. I've heard horror stories of people's goods being held hostage for more money, broken items, missing items, the book covered it all and told what to do in case that happens. It gives you enough information, however, to avoid such disreputable movers in the first place.

One area where it falls short (unfortunately) is the internet. There are many, many resoucrs on the net and the book doesn't cover enough of them IMHO. This book was written in 1999 though, and can sort of be excused I guess. I think that they would be well advised to do an update in a year or two with more coverage of resources for moving on the net. That'd be worth five stars then...

                                      Book Description

What is it like to be a contemporary American Indian mystic? What sequence of experiences come together to form a mystic's path? How would you deal with the visions that come and carry you to alternate dimensions without notice and at the most inopportune times? In The House of Shattering Light: Life as an American Indian Mystic, Joseph Rael reveals how such questions shaped his life and his visions for the future.

"This House of Shattering Light — this perceptual reality in which we live and of which we are a part — exists only for the soul's purpose of continuing its own livelihood."

                                      —Joseph Rael

Very early in his new book, Rael's message is clear — trust in the path. In The House of Shattering Light, Rael lays bare the main theme of his life, one with which many of us can identify: "Without realizing it, we are led in a particular direction. We are not always completely aware of the reason, but it takes us wherever we need to go, even when we don't know that's what's happening. All we know is that in some way everything's perfect."

Rael's life has been pulled into virtually every conceivable magical, mystical and disastrous experience. Born a "split"—half Southern Ute and half Picuris Publan—he enjoyed the sweet embrace of Native American shamanic practices while also confronting the unimaginable bitterness of inter-tribal racism, which forced early feelings of isolation. Fascinated early on by sounds and vibrations, one of Joseph's first experiments, at age six, was to lie with his sisters Corleen and Gloria, with their ears pressed to the train tracks. Mesmerized by their ability to capture the sounds of the oncoming train—Joseph's sisters, ages seven and eight, perished on the tracks, and only Joseph survived. From this tragedy he went on to deal with the death of his mother and being placed with a foster family, where he found a mentor, Grandfather, who schooled him in the mysteries of tribal ceremonies. Here began Rael's life as a medicine man and his exploration of the power of language, inspired by his study of the Tiwa language in which each word and sound is a metaphor expressing some aspect of the great mystery. Through his story, he leads us beyond a mentally-oriented way of perceiving reality to one based on intuition. One observation in particular is meant for this time:

"My experience is emblematic of what all of humanity is experiencing at this moment in our history. As diverse cultures come together and different ways of thinking clash, there's stress, tension. Because of this there's more capacity for the visionary to come forth out of that tension and to take the front of the world stage.

"The very tension of the masses of people in turmoil creates new insights for the overall population. Out of these insights new determinations are made as to how—socially and politically—we are going to develop in the next twenty-five or thirty years on the planet."

Rael describes his most powerful vision, in which he was directed to share his medicine with the outer world, beyond the Indians. He was told that non-Indian people need this information because they're the ones who are going to save the Indians. In House of Shattering Light, Rael inspires us all to embrace the great mystery through his life story.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Shimmering..........2006-10-21

This is a beautiful book that somehow lifted me to a different perspective. The whole time I was reading it, I felt as if the air around me shimmered with diffuse light. It is interesting to read about life in Joseph Rael's culture, fascinating to learn about the perspective of different Native American languages, hopeful to learn of Joseph's dream and continuing work for all of us, and transfixing to experience the effect his writing had upon my heart.

I recommend this book for all who are not afraid to expand their view of life and their world.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A Treasure.......2006-05-21

Joseph Rael is one of the most interesting people you'll read about. This is basically his life story, and how he acquired the teachings to complement his natural gifts. The discussion of the Tiwa language is brilliant. Be one of the fortunate to read about this amazing man.

This book is not a physics text. It is the highest level
work on Native American religion I have ever seen. It would
also be of interest to linguists as it presents words from
the Tiwa language which uses verbs and not nouns.
But the interesting part is the actual experiences of
a man who is a healer and ceremonial dancer and peace
worker. It is well written amd presented in a personal
                                      style.
The book is much better than this review.

The vision of this book is remarkable especially when viewed in the light of string theory. So much of the philosophy of the Pueblo people from whom Joseph Rael sprang seems to be confirmed by modern physics. A must read for the serious seeker.
