4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to scheduling for the young adult!.......2005-09-02

This book is actually part of a ten-book series on 'achieving high performance' for young adults. They come under Learning-a-Living Library, which comprises core subjects of, among others, understanding systems, self-management, leadership & organising information. These focused areas are very useful for todays' young adults to learn, develop & adopt as part of their lifestyles.

Despite its compact size, only 64 pages, this book gives a good grounding to the subject of scheduling i.e. using time to your best advantage, as follows:

- scheduling at school;
- scheduling at work;
- scheduling & your career;
- scheduling & your future;

The young adult examples used are also very appropriate.

Unfortunately, like all the other books in the series, the publisher has done a lousy job in picking photographs, mostly black & white, for illustrations in the book. Even the colour photograph on the front cover is visually unappealing. In today's multimedia savvy world, I just wonder how young readers can be quickly attracted by this good book. This is my only complaint about this book.

I like the 'Questions to Ask Yourself' at the end of each chapter. They help the reader to focus on key points & then ponder, prior to personal application.

The resource bibliography at the end of the book is quite useful for young readers to pursue further on the subject.

On the whole, I rate a score of 4 for this book.

I would recommend young readers to also peruse the following titles in the series:

- High Performance through Understanding Systems;
- High Perrformance through Self Management;
- High Performance through Leadership;
- High Performance through Organising Information;

    Book Description

    Superbly edited and annotated, this collection of the writings of John Wilkes Booth constitutes a major new primary source that contributes to scholarship on Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, and nineteenth-century theater history. The nearly seventy documents--more than half published here for the first time--include love letters written during the summer of 1864, when Booth was conspiring against Lincoln, explicit statements of Booth's political convictions, and the diary he kept during his futile twelve-day flight after the assassination.

    this book is a decent account of John Wilkes Booth, but there is nothing that has not been already examined in countless other books pertaining to this topic. The book does not give as much detail about booth as one would expect. If you really want a great book about John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln's assaination, and the several weeks that followed, i strongly recommend "American Brutus" by Michael W. Kauffman, this was one of the best books ive ever read on the subject.

    5 out of 5 stars "open force is holier than hidden craft"---JWB.......2005-08-05

    "Right or Wrong, God Judge Me" is a fascinating collection of all the known existing hand-written documents left by John Wilkes Booth. Most of his written materials were destroyed by family, friends and acquaintances in the aftermath of Lincoln's assassination for fear that the holders of the documents may be accused of being an accessory to the crime. What is printed here (many for the first time) are those documents left by JWB that managed to be preserved. These materials include letters written to a friend William O'Laughlin (brother of Michael O'Laughlin who was a co-conspirator) when JWB was a teen-ager, poems written in autograph books of fellow actors, information on his theatre work and financial investments written to his business partners, love letters to Isabel Sumner, and a lengthy pro-Union speech intentionally preserved by brother Edwin written only a few days after South Carolina seceded from the Union. In the latter as well as the famous "To Whom It May Concern" letter also published here, JWB explains his sympathy with the southern cause, the influence of watching abolitionist John Brown hanged, his feelings towards his country, his personal views on slavery, etc. Two pocket diary entries written while he was a fugitive (surprised at the negative reaction his deed received from the public) as well as a sarcastic letter written to a doctor who would not help him as he was fleeing authorities on an injured leg are the last entries in this book.

    What makes this book even more fascinating than reading the words of one of the most notorious men in American history, is the incredible research completed by the editors. Every document, including letters of only a couple sentences, are followed by many footnotes detailing the people, places, and events in JWB's life pertaining to the document. This information includes theatre reviews, most in praise of Booth's performances, especially his sword fighting. The dangers and hardships actors endured traveling to shows in those days is explained. The editors also include historical background and context to the documents. Even the letters on his theatre schedule and investments were interesting because of the additional information the editors provided. I felt as though I was following JWB's life through these letters and footnotes. I've come away from this book with a much better understanding of what motivated JWB to commit his crime. Anyone interested in Booth and the Lincoln assassination needs to read this book. The 171-page book includes a section of illustrations, including photos of three of the handwritten documents.

    3 out of 5 stars Sounds better than it is..........2002-07-04

    The title is a promising one, if you're interested in JWB and the Lincoln assassination; and the compilation is thorough, if what you want is to have the complete known products surviving from JWB. The problem is that 90% of what does survive (thus 90% of this book) is really insignificant stuff that sheds very little light on the man's ideas, opinions, or thoughts. It's mostly brief, impersonal, non-revealing notes written to confirm theatrical engagements, &c., &c. Much of it is repetitive variations on a few business-oriented themes. Too bad this is al that survives from him!

    4 out of 5 stars Letters don't lie..........2002-04-17

    This is an interesting book regarding the state of mind of the wealthy and famous actor of the time. The book carefully places his letters chronologically and also backs them by giving historic references and explanations of the events that surrounded the man. How his "flowery-like" letters could ever hint at a man struggling with the problems of the country isn't told in them. It's ironic from such writing that this man who had fame, fortune and social approval also had a deep and ever growing anger against northern politics. His inner anger seemed depressed awaiting a chance to explode. This book easily portrays Booth as a caring man yet also one who sympathized with the Southern cause. It briskly explains his premeditated thoughts of assassinating Lincoln and has little information regarding putting his thoughts into motion. Yes, this book is about his letters and offers a quick coverage of the events surrounding Booth before and after the killing of Lincoln. For those looking for a complete biography this book isn't the one. For those looking for added insight who may have already read about Booth before, this is a great bonus of information.

    5 out of 5 stars The Complicated Life Of John Wilkes Booth.......2000-07-17

    In my opinion "Right or Wrong,God Judge Me" is a blessing;mostly for the masses growing up believing only one side to a twisting and tragic tale.John Wilkes Booth is humanized,he is presented as a multi dimensional conflicted individual,far from the "mad man" we were all taught to despise for his repulsive crime against the US government and Lincoln. The evil I once thought he posessed is not the main struggle of his personality;his struggle seems to more or less be over his love and jealousy of brother Edwin and his fears of being loved and admired.His heart is tormented by the carnage of the Civil War,which in turn causes him to side with just about anyone who hates Lincoln. As I found by reading the book,he was not as mad as I once believed,but seemed more a sad and lonely man admired mostly for his looks yet he seemed to be upset about the sexual objectivity given to his person,hence he burned fan mail sent to him by rather amourous ladies,I feel from reading this book that he needed more than theatre and adoration from screaming females;he wanted to be taken seriously and make a difference in the world.Unfortunately he chose a rather brutal means of attaining this goal. I do think that his appearance can somewhat color judgement.Do we feel more sorry for him because he was extremely handsome? I wonder if he would have been homely if he would have gotten as much sympathy? Maybe not,but still I understand his mentality better and why he turned out the way he did.

      Book Description

      SUNSHINE ON THE PRAIRIE is the story of CYNTHIA ANN PARKER, captured by a band of Comanches as a nine-year-old while living in Fort Parker with her family. It was 24 years before she was "re-captured" by her "white family". This is the intriguing story of why she did not want to be rescued from her Comanche family. During her 24-year captivity, she had become a wife to Nocona, the most feared of the Comanche war chiefs and the mother of Quanah, last and most famous of the Comanche war chiefs. Cynthia Ann adopted completely the lifestyle and culture of the Comanches. She endured their hardships and she also learned to love the freedom of the pristine wilderness. Using exhaustive research, the author follows Cynthia's footprints over the prairie with a sensitivity rare among non-native Americans.

      A very good read. The coverage of Cynthia Ann Parker's life in the best detail that can be offered. Not too over-packed with facts and figures, but sticking to her story as told by her son Quanah, and her grand children. Though hard to find (I ordered from the publisher) it was worth the money

        Book Description

        This manual provides practical methodological guidance for the economic analysis of stakeholder incentives in participatory forest management (PFM) situations. It stems from the concern that poor understanding has contributed to the often weak local participation in PFM, and therefore the limited success of many PFM experiences. The manual will help governments, NGOs and donors identify appropriate interventions to encourage participation. While the manual is primarily oriented to economists working in a range of organizations, it also aims to make economics more accessible to a wider audience promoting PFM.

        The first part involves an introduction to economic concepts applied to PFM. The second and main section is the Economic Stakeholder Analysis (ESA) toolbox. The tools are organized in six main ESA stages covering characterization of the stakeholders; understanding the decision-making context; physical quantification of costs and benefits; valuation of the costs and benefits; economic comparison of the decision-making alternatives; and participatory analysis and monitoring. An important aim in the ESA framework is to integrate economic analysis with other decision-making criteria. The manual is user-friendly with clear signposting, boxes, tables, figures and examples. It is an excellent tool for government organizations, NGOs and donors involved in participatory forest management.

              5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming story.......2006-11-20

              This is a heartwarming story of being raised in a simpler time and place. As a first generation American, I liked that this was a positive look at life in Ireland and then success as an immigrant. I hated Angela's Ashes. It was so depressing and not representative of so many Irish families. Miles Apart is a story of a family that many families can relate to -- not rich in money but rich in love. A great read!

                          Book Description

                          A disillusioned young man journeys to a remote Greek island in search of renewal. By chance, he is introduced to an elderly hermit who over time helps him in his quest. This sage turns out to be none other than Robert Lax, major spiritual poet of the 20th century and friend of Thomas Merton (Merton's classic autobio-graphy of faith, The Seven Storey Mountain, mentions Lax more often than any other contemporary.)

                          The Way of the Dreamcatcher relates the story of a unique friendship between the hermit Robert Lax and a young Californian, Steve Georgiou, as they talk about art, faith, spirit and commitment during their visits spanning a period of seven years. On the holy island of Patmos, where St. John wrote The Book of Revelation nearly 2,000 years ago, a contemporary young man experienced his own revelations with the help of a creative mentor steeped in ancient and modern spiritual traditions.

                          The result is a fascinating portrait of the man that Thomas Merton said "was born with the deepest sense of who God is." It is also a fascinating book about a young searcher who encounters deep wisdom and affectionate mentoring at an important time in his life.

                          3 out of 5 stars Hagiography In Progress.......2004-12-29

                          I found this book a little disturbing. I love Robert Lax's poetry, his way of looking at life, his calm--all of the things that Steve T. Georgiou attempts to capture for us in this book. On the other hand, Bob Lax would be the last person to opt for sainthood. He was far too modest--far too intelligent--far too understanding of human nature--and far too much of an artist and creator to allow himself to be painted into such a corner unless he were indulging someone he truly liked. That's what this book appears to be--Lax indulging his young friend. The questions that Georgiou plys Lax with are well-meaning, but rather simple minded and one-dimensional. He seems intent on the business of portraying Lax as sage and holy man--even down to the manner of the cutting of his vegetables and the eating of his yogurt, and he doesn't let up. Although it would be interesting to hear the tapes from which these interviews were taken, it's obvious that Lax is playing along, and in several cases suggesting just the opposite interpretation that Georgiou seems almost desperate to make. The end result is a two-dimensional portrait of Robert Lax that does not do justice to the man or the artist. In addition, Georgiou adds a few Lax-based dreams and miracles into the narrative, which moves this book into the category of "New Age" writing, in my opinion. On the other hand, there are a few good points about the book. Lax discusses some of his influences and drops a memorable line or two. For that reason alone this book should find a place on the shelves of anyone at all interested in this fascinating poet. My hope is that a real study of the man and the work will be written in the near future.

                          5 out of 5 stars Spirit lessons from Patmos.......2004-04-27

                          The author has written a fine book about Robert Lax and about most of the issues that come up in discussions of the spiritual life. Lax, who passed away in 2000, was an elderly hermit-poet who lived on the island of Patmos in Greece. The author is an artist-theologian, a California type who finds in Lax a kindred spirit with whom he spends many hours. In the first chapter we find out much about Lax's early life, his education, and how he came to Patmos, where he spent the last 35 years of his life. This is followed by two chapters that give the essence of Lax's philosophy of art. Here we learn how he developed his own minimalist style. The next chapter is more directly devoted to the spiritual life, and here the central element is, as it should be, love, which includes our relation to transcendence (God) and also the way we treat each other. In their conversations Lax and Georgiou return frequently to the idea of love. They both believe strongly in it. The book is well written and it is an enjoyable read. Definitely recommended.

                          4 out of 5 stars The Way of the Dreamcatcher.......2004-02-10

                          The Way of the Dreamcatcher is deceptively easy to read - it flows and it is very easy to go with the flow. And going with the flow is a major theme running through the book as Steve Georgiou records his conversations with Thomas Merton's friend and contemporary from Columbia days, Robert Lax. The book is organised into what appear to be four conversations loosely titled `Origins,' `Craft,' `Art' and `Spirit' and sandwiched between a prologue and an epilogue and with a brief forward by Patrick Hart - Merton's secretarial assistant at Gethsemani at the time he left for Asia in 1968. The conversations range far and wide discussing Lax's life and how he came to be a hermit on the Greek island of Patmos. Along they way they talk about writing, miracles, heaven & hell, life after death, angels, dreams and the purifying properties of yoghurt! And much more besides. Jack Kerouac and the Beats, and Bob Dylan too. And, of course, Thomas Merton. Lax does most of the talking, prompted and guided by Georgiou's questions, comments and contributions - so in a way it's his book as much as it is Georgiou's.

                          For me reading the book was like a breath of fresh air (a cliché, I know, but true) - it completely transported me out of my own world with its immediate concerns and tribulations, and I found myself with the young disciple and the sage, listening to their evening conversation as the fire flickered in the hermitage overlooking the port town of Skala on the sacred isle of Patmos. "Go with the flow" is the major message that comes through - become who you are, find out a little more everyday about who you are and become that person. Like the ageing hermit of the Aegean, living his simple life, writing his poems, becoming a little more holy everyday. As I said, deceptively easy. But I also found the book tremendously challenging - in a gentle but insistent way. It made me ask questions about my own life and why I do what I do. Questions about who I am. And more than that it raises disturbing questions about the world and culture in which we live, the culture of activity and busy-ness, the strenuous struggle to survive. Going with the flow is all very well on the tranquillity of Patmos but how do you go with the flow when everyday existence is a raging torrent? The answers are not contained in this book though there are plenty of hints and pointers - perhaps not least the need to be asking the questions in the first place.
