In 1940, the prolific author and historian Philip Van Doren Stern produced this volume as a guide to Lincoln's life through his writings. Stern's "The Life of Abraham Lincoln," which precedes the writings, is a full biography of the man and includes a detailed chronology.

Nice compact edition.......2000-10-16

There are some who consider Mark Twain and Abraham Lincoln the two greatest writers in American history- and not in that order. Others have compared Lincoln's eloquence to none other than Shakespeare. Both are wonderful compliments, and in my mind highly accurate. Abraham Lincoln was a master of the English language.

This is a nice single volume of Lincoln's best known writings. It has all the great speeches you have heard of (Gettysburg Address, etc.)plus many the non specialist might have missed. If you are a specialist, you probably already own Roy Basler's nine volume set of Lincoln's writings. If you do not, this fine volume will suit you nicely and help you to understand why Lincoln is the revered man that he is.

Honest Abe.......1999-12-07

This is a great book. I think the introduction is the best. It is interesting plus you really feel Lincoln was a man of the people. My favorite part was when Lincoln had one of his sons in a wagon. Lincoln was so much in his thoughts that the child fell out and was crying loudly and Lincoln kept walking dragging an empty wagon behind him.

A one-volume Lincoln library........1999-06-12

I have a large Civil War library, and if there was a fire, this is the one Lincoln book I would try to rescue. Despite being written almost 50 years ago, the book's strong point is not its selection of Lincoln's writings (although that is quite good), but its masterful biographical sketch of Lincoln by Stern. Almost seven score since Lincoln's death, there is still no other satisfying BRIEF biography. In about 200 pages, Stern has managed to capture, in skilfull prose, all the important facts while still having room for some less-wordy, interesting comments. Each important event is succinctly captured in a couple paragraphs. I like that Stern actually calls Lincoln "neurotic" in certain personal aspects. I also like his passages on Willie Lincoln's death, emancipation, and the war's closing. There's really not enough room for any heavy politically-influenced interpretations of issues like those in modern long biographies,and that's why Stern's sketch can't be considered outdated. Some people may not like the short description of Lincoln's assassination, and I thought Stern spent too much ink on Lincoln's final attempts to compensate the South. Since the book predates the most comprehensive, closely-inspected collection of Lincoln's letters, there may be some inaccuracies in the writings reproduced here. However, the selection is an excellent one, linked together well with intros by Stern. I can't imagine this was an easy job for Stern and I'm lost why it's been virtually ignored. But all in all, I can only repeat, if you want to know the most about Lincoln in the fewest words, and have your interest held throughout, just buy this book and you're set!

Unlike most aspiring writers clogging the new release lists on Amazon.com., self-published author Lonna Lisa Williams has something to say and she says it well. And the joy of reading her work is discovering the vast improvement seen from book to book.

"I Saw You in the Moon" picks up where "Crossing the Chemo Room" left off, recapping and reporting on what has happened to many who appeared in that book, and then continuing with the diary-style memoir that has enough in common with the average reader to keep the pages turning.

Normally memoirs are reserved for the rich and famous. Publishers salivate over the kiss and tell 'now it can be told' voyeurism that makes memoirs sellable. Author Williams is neither rich or famous, and she has no sordid secrets to reveal, so what is the attraction? Frankly, it is Williams' ability to connect with her reader. It is her ability to make one feel she is sitting across the kitchen table telling the latest tale about the mundane aspects of family life which, pieced together as a whole, make life worth living.

This is never more apparent than when, in a heartbreaking essay, Williams recalls trying to convince a friend from her church that suicide is not the answer. "Effects of suicide last a lifetime--effects you will never know," Williams pleads. While unsuccessful--the friend ends up killing herself--Williams' faith and strength through family see her through and even though we may not personally know the people intertwined in her stories, we care, and the pages keep turning.

That Williams is able to at once report on a family vacation to New Zealand and then switch gears to recall the traumatic Southern California wildfires as she and her family evacuate to safety speaks of her gifts as a writer.

Williams also laments the world of publishing, comparing it to dark imagery seen in "The Lord of the Rings" movie trilogy. "The publishing world is a Tower guarded by the Dark Lord," she begins. "If you can't get in through the big black gate, like Frodo, find another way."

Williams and clan jet down under and upon their return, "I find a generic letter from Harcourt saying they don't accept unsolicited manuscripts."
When tea and chocolate fail to salve her disappointment, Williams goes into the forest, sits under a tree and prays.

"I Saw You in the Moon" is a gentle book from a caring and sweet individual who--in spite of the missed opportunities of the publishing world--deserves to be read. All of Williams' books are available at Del Lago's in Lake Arrowhead Village, or online.

This book does not provide a lot of detail, but the informationit does provide covers everything from installing floors to skylightsto remodeling a whole room. The book is easy to read and does a good job of highlighting things to look for when attempting a job. I would use this book as a reference point before I start a project and then use the information it provides to delve further into the subject.

Buy this one USED!.......2002-04-09

This book does have some cultural/sociological worth, but if you buy it new, you've got gross emotional problems. Buy it used--as long as you can find a dependable seller, and it looks like there's a good one already up here, you'll be much happier for it. Trust me on this one--save the few dollars and the years of therapy.

A Great early Indigenous voice.......2001-11-22

Four stars seem appropriate for an abridged edition of a work rating five stars for the complete version. For more detail, see my review of "On Our Own Ground" with the same date. The spectacle of Apess delivering his "Eulogy on King Philip" to the descendants of the Puritans who destroyed the Wampanoag leader should cause many Americans to rethink their image of our country's history.

A pioneering Native American writer.......2001-09-23

"A Son of the Forest and Other Writings," by William Apess, is an important resource in United States history and literature. The book is edited by Barry O'Connell, who also provides an introduction. Apess (1798-1839), of the Pequot Indian people, was a pioneer Native American writer. In addition to his 1831 autobiography, "A Son of the Forest," this volume also contains "The Experiences of Five Christian Indians of the Pequot Tribe" (1832) and his "Eulogy on King Philip" (1836).

Apess' writing is dominated by his fervent evangelical Christianity, and also by his articulation of a Native American consciousness. "Son" is at times a very gripping autobiography. In it Apess writes about poverty, child abuse, alcoholism, ethnic identity and religious conversion: all topics that remain very relevant over the centuries. This volume contains, in addition to the primary texts, a useful bibliography and chronology. This book is an excellent choice both for the classroom and for the independent reader.
