5 out of 5 stars A Man Greater than the Myths.......2006-06-29

In this small but valuable volume, Oates explores the reality beyond the two sources of Lincoln myth: the primary myth of a saintly and folkloric Lincoln of Carl Sandburg and a secondary myth of the 'white honky' Lincoln of the 1970's revisionists. Oates emphasizes that Lincoln drew deeply upon the "spirit of his age", which was a profoundly revolutionary time across the world. Oates relates how Lincoln absorbed one of the core lessons of America from the example of Henry Clay: : "in this country one can scarcely be so poor, but that, if he will, he can acquire sufficient education to get through the world respectably".

That slavery was the cause of the Civil War is beyond all doubt. As Oates explains, however, the North did not go to war to free the slaves. In the standard phrasing, the North went to war to 'preserve the union'. Oates explores Lincoln's fears that the spread of slavery in the wake of the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the Dred Scott decision would lead to the destruction of democratic society. The debate then still raged on the world stage whether a republican form of government could last. Lincoln rejected the "ingenious sophism" that states could freely leave the Union. "With rebellion thus sugar coated [southern leaders] have been drugging the public mind of their section for more than thirty years." Secession posed nothing less than a final challenge to popular government. If a minority could destroy the government any time it felt aggrieved, then no government could endure. Thus the war had to be fought to preserve not just the American Republic, but the possibility of republican government.

Lincoln did in fact oppose slavery from early on. His views on racial matters apart from slavery became more fully progressive over time. Lincoln, however, hoped that slavery would slowly melt away in a losing competition with free labor and that liberated slaves would resettle in Africa. It is part of Lincoln's greatness that he later gave up these views. Oates explores this evolution in his thinking. Oates debunks the notion that the Emancipation Proclamation was unimportant in liberating the slaves. Oates also refutes the notion that Lincoln would have favored an easy hand during Reconstruction. On the contrary, the evidence strongly suggests he would have led the so-called Radical Republicans.

Highly recommended for any reader with an interest in Lincoln, the Civil War era, or really pretty much any American.

5 out of 5 stars A Concise, Readable Study of our Greatest President........2001-10-20

If you're interested in understanding what the man Abraham Lincoln was like, this is the book for you. This short, well-documented study of our sixteenth President cuts through the myths and the utter nonsense that have been written about Lincoln to expose the real hero behind these tales. This work shows Lincoln as the driven, courageous yet fallible man who never gave up on his dream of freedom for all men. Highly recommended!

2 out of 5 stars It did not elaborate on the question of Lincoln's parentage........1999-09-19

As an amateur genealogist I discovered that I was a sixth cousin, five times removed to President Abraham Lincoln through the Lincoln and Holmes families. On page 21 ( Abraham Lincoln, The man Behind The Myths ) Mr. Oates wrote that there was a mistaken belief that Thomas Lincoln was not Abraham's real father rather it was a Senator John C. Calhoun or a Henry Clay. If this was true it would mean that I was not related to President Abraham Lincoln. How would such a rumour start ? Is there any documented evidence that Nancy Lincoln had an affair with one of these men while being married to Thomas Lincoln. At the time I am trying to locate Stephen B. Oates so I can get this matter cleared up. Sincerely, Mr. Blair E. Bartlett, 87 Shillington Road, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, E2J 4K7 1-506-696-6175

5 out of 5 stars Separating mythos from the mortal.......1998-04-06

We invented Abraham Lincoln. Not the man, of course, but the myth, that solemn and statuesque giant memorialized eternally overlooking the Capitol mall. The power of that myth and the quiet dignity of its personage dwarfs us all. But the myth is not the man. Myths never are. Stephen Oates in his _Abraham Lincoln, The Man Behind the Myths_, does not seek to diminish the man but rather to clarify him, separating the mythos from the mortal. And it is not an undaunting task, it seems, for overly soon after Lincoln's tragic end the mills began to churn. The public's shredding of the White House interior for mementos while Mary Lincoln lay debilitated in the next room seems symbolic of the wolfpack mentality in Washington even today. And every new memoir published by another family acquaintance of the Lincoln's almost always got it wrong, and tore anew at the heart of the family. We may not have memorialized and glorified our modern-day tragic heroes to such an extent, for we have simultaneously tried to scandalize them. But the tabloid trade it seems has always been a yellow paper. Even Lincoln was vilified in his time and after. He was, Oates, reminds us, one of the most unpopular living presidents of our history. But though the legacy ballooned to heroic proportions after his passing, the man seems to have been lost in it all, remaining only in the hearts of the family leaving quietly and unattended down the steps of the White House never to return.

As an experienced gardener, I was not looking for a how-to book. This is one of my favorite books however, for reading in those last days of winter when the urge to garden grows with each lengthening day. The pictures are luminous and inspiring. I read it every year.

                        5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......1999-07-29

I enjoyed Mr. Bailey's conversational style. The book is really a journal of his garden. It is not a reference book but it has some very useful tips hidden within. The pictures are marvelous! Mr. Bailey has arranged and photographed his flowers in some unusual ways that are quite appealing. I got this book at the library but I must have a copy for myself.

2 out of 5 stars Good Book, but not for me.......1998-06-29

This book has some pretty pictures in it and some good information but it is based on a given week in a year of the growing season.

I was looking for a garden planning design book but this book is more of a documentary of how the authors flowers bloomed and what he did during the season. It gives recommendations on what to do during the growing season based on the week. It also give instructions on "Potpourri" or "How to make a meadow garden". But these sections are only a page long without any pictures.

If you want a book you read through slowly to enjoy another gardeners view then this is the book for you. If you are like me and looking for a reference book, skip this one.

Value Investing: A Governance Action Plan
                          by Jannice Moore
Implementing Policy Governance involves a significant investment of time, effort, and money. This is the second of several articles that will examine behaviors of boards that invest wisely in Policy Governance. How can they be sure to make a "value investment" that will stand the test of time, rather than a "day trade" with possible short-term gain but not necessarily substantive gain in the long run? Based on her experience with a variety of boards that have implemented the model, Jannice Moore shares some of the conditions and behaviors that contribute to value investing. In this article, she introduces the idea of a Governance Action Plan (GAP). A GAP is not the establishment of ends policies but rather a tool that boards can use to set realistic objectives for themselves and to monitor their own progress in their implementation of Policy Governance.

                          The Cult of Efficiency"
                          by Caroline Oliver
In 1964, a professor named Raymond Callahan published a book titled Education and the Cult of Efficiency, and since then the concept has worked its way into general organizational parlance. In Policy Governance terms, the "cult of efficiency" describes a dangerous preoccupation with means without first identifying ends. How can we know if we're efficient if we don't first understand what it is we're trying to accomplish? The cult of efficiency is the subject of a recent lecture by a conflict management professor named Janice Gross Stein, later published in book form. In this article, Caroline Oliver considers the ways in which Stein's ideas about the cult of efficiency coincide with, and differ from, the Policy Governance concepts of ends and means.

                            Book Description

The inspection of insulation and ventilation systems is particularly challenging because so little of the systems can be seen. This text discusses how insulation, air/vapor barriers and ventilations systems work to keep houses comfortable and structurally sound.

Basics of heat transfer and vapor movement are covered first to lay the groundwork for discussion of insulation and ventilation materials, systems, and applications. Thorough treatment of venting living spaces is provided, including balanced ventilation systmes and heat recovery ventilators (HRV's).

I enjoyed this book very much. It is one more autobiography from one of the original principal dancers schooled by the reknowned choreographer, george balanchine , during the early days of the new york city ballet. edward villellas memories of those times are as honest and blunt- and interesting! - as the recollections that other principal dancers from that time have offered as unstintingly in their books. and so who can resist these illustrious dancers accounts of how and why they immersed themselves in this art ? their backrounds before, during, and after they stumbled upon fame; their quirky stage mothers; and their unyielding admiration for their mentor, balanchine, despite his ever present ability to nearly make or break them as dancers.(*as balanchine did not compromise in his expectations of dance ; his neo-classical brand of ballet choreography was a complete vision of his , and a vision that would change ballet forever.) these early muses of his endeavors were caught up in the excitement of this time, and used by balanchine for their abilitys and strengths as artists. that they all achieved balanchines favor as he set out to calmly put new/more life and inspiration into this incredible dance form, ballet - ultimately brought their names with him to as well be recorded in perhaps the most uplifting time in the history of ballet.

I am a dancer in Edward Villella's acclaimed Miami City Ballet and I would like to say (as biased as it may seem) that this is a must read. If you are a ballet dancer, or even a ballet fan, please purchase this book. It is a unique look at how men thrive in this dance world and still come out looking like men. It takes you deep into the world of ballet..the parts that most people don't see. Edward explains all of the secrets past the pink tutus and pointe shoes and shows what it's really like the be a part of our world. He is an amazing man with a facinating career and I urge you to buy this book because of that. You won't regret it!

4 out of 5 stars an Important Work.......2003-06-05

Although not a literary masterpiece, it is an easy read. It was important historically to write this book. It helped put much into perspective, and documented an impactful life. As a late babyboomer child, I adored watching him dance on television. He made ballet interesting and exciting. I also met him at Illinois Wesleyan University in the late 70s when he was on the speaker's circuit. Now I know why he was lecturing at that time. His openness about his own weaknesses was delivered well without being too specific or tacky. Villella's strengths, however, were very well portrayed. As a long-time fan, it was important for me to see that he grew/integrated into not just a talent, but a good man/husband/father/mentor.

1 out of 5 stars The Rocky of the ballet.......2003-03-21

Mr Villella in this book try really hard to potrait himself like Rocky Balboa, but instead to became a boxer became a dancer. 90% of the book he critizice Mr Balanchine, and at the end declare his eternal love to him, no wonder thanks to Balanchine he have a book out and an artistic directorship in Miami. He repeatedly mention his troubling relantionship with Mr Balanchine because he never like Mr Balanchine's classes, I wonder how the situation with classes in Miami City Ballet?

                            5 out of 5 stars Fascinating!.......2002-02-27

I was so enchanted with the story of Edward Villella's life that I found it impossible to put the book down and it prompted me to write my first review! He not only tells you about an exciting time in ballet of which he was a part of - you also feel each moment with him. His hard work, the competitiveness, the disappointments, his success all flows into a story that leaves you no doubt of the love and passion that he has for dance. It's a fitting ending to know that he's now passing this on to other dancers. I'm just sorry I never saw him dance...

                                Book Description

The Apaches are legendary for their fierce, uncompromising tactics in battle, and their gorgeously complex, enigmatic mythologies and rituals. They are a people of pride, power, and spirit. One figure in Apache history embodied all these traits. She was a force to be reckoned with: a spiritual leader, shaman, and lethal adversary. Warrior Woman is the story of Lozen, a woman among male warriors. While most of the Native American women at the time remained in the villages to rear children and prepare food, Lozen fought alongside Geronimo, Cochise, and Victorio in some of the bloodiest incidents of the Apache Wars in the 19th-century. Hers is a life little discussed in Native American history books. Instead, much of what is known of her has been passed down through generations via stories and legends among her people. One story speaks of her supernatural powers, bestowed upon her by the god Ussen. She would lift her arms to the sky and place her palms against the wind, and through the warm sensations her open palms, could detect the direction and distance of her enemies. Other stories say that she was purported to have power to calm and tame horses with the mere laying of hands, and that she had the speed, dexterity, and skill at weaponry to match any man. Peter Aleshire combines such folklore with historical facts and oral histories to recreate Lozen's life. With immaculate detail he tells the story of her childhood in the mountains of New Mexico, surrounded by the vastness of nature and the Chiricahua legends and religions that shaped her thoughts. He describes her intricate coming-of-age ceremony, and the evolution of her role to match that of the staunchest warrior, as the white men slowly took over the land of her people and forced them from one reservation to another. Finally, Aleshire recounts Lozen's final days of freedom, when the few remaining Apache warriors, under the leadership of Geronimo, rode like the wind through the mountainous regions in Mexico, pursued by one-quarter of the U.S. Army.Warrior Woman brings Lozen to life. But more than that, it is also the story of her people, from the events leading up to the Apache Wars until their inevitable and unfortunate conclusion.

                                5 out of 5 stars Must read.......2006-05-02

The book could be described as "dry" on occasion but it's History, forgotten History at that. I loved Mr.Aleshire's book about a true Hero that so little has been written of. I enjoyed the chapter notes and appreciate that Mr. Aleshire added his own assumptions at time. I had a hard time putting this book down and have recommended it to people I know would enjoy it. My Great-Grandmother mentioned Lozen when I was younger and until I was in High School I thought she was a myth. What a terrible shame it is to know so little about someone so legend worthy.

                                5 out of 5 stars Lozen........2005-01-25

I have learned from a reliable source (another author in fact)that Peter Aleshire is an Apache? His book I found hard to put down. One of the best written on this elusive and mysterious woman. He has given an honest account of her life and weaved facts with probabilities that he has recorded as his own assumptions to fill in the gaps where no records exist.

1 out of 5 stars not well told.......2003-07-26

This book is too dry for such a fascinating, larger-than-life Apache woman. Try Ghost Warrior by Lucia St.Clair Robson instead - a much more intersting story that does justice to Lozen.

                                5 out of 5 stars Fascinating!.......2003-01-02

This book, though rather dry at times, is still a fascinating account of a forgotten warrior. Detailing the life of Lozen is a worthy endeavor (though it's been done before in another book called "Lozen: Apache Woman Warrior" - which is also worth reading by the way.) I found this book to be well worth reading, as well - it's one of those history explorations that seem to take you back to the time and place of it's account, and spark your imagination to what the life of the people of that time might have been like. I hope more people read this book so that Lozen's name is not forgotten (as so many great, historical women in other cultures are) I would love it if one day her name were as recognizable as Geronimo or Crazy Horse. Maybe this book will help with that - who knows!
