Forgotten no longer.......2002-11-24

Losson has written a book about a military leader and his division of the War Between the States, both of whom were nearly forgotten in the wealth of books about that war. Both a biography and a history, the author stays focused on his subjects, not letting the broader picture of the war distract him.

Benjamin Franklin Cheatham, a career soldier who served in the War with Mexico, commanded Hood's corps for a while. His entire career in the war was served in the western theater, most of it in and around Tennessee. The war wasn't just with the Yankees when Braxton Bragg commanded the corps, for the two men despised each other.

Cheatham was a man who found the going rough between the two wars, but made his mark in the later conflict, in spite of accusations against his character. After the war, he was more successful as a citizen than before, heading the Tennessee State Penitentiary system for time. However, over the years, with most interest in Lee, Grant, and the eastern theater, he was nearly forgotten

This book is well written and an easy read, but could have used the skill of a good proofreader. Typos and other errors are sometimes distracting. Readers interested in the Civil War, particularly the western theater, will find this an interesting account. They might also enjoy "Five Tragic Hours" by McDonough and Connelly, and "Shiloh: In Hell before Night" by McDonough.

Excellent book, but..........2002-04-24

This is an excellent book about a little-written about general. Although Frank Cheatham rose to the rank of major general, was active in Tennessee after the war, was one of the Western Theater's more colorful and controversial figures, and his division was considered one of best in the West, he and his division have not received much attention from writers. Losson has changed this and has written both an excellent bio of Cheatham and a good look at the men that made up his division. Another good thing about this book is that Losson focuses on Cheatham and his division, rather than straying to other generals or divisions. The book takes a good look at the battles, both military and political, that Cheatham fought. Overall, the book is excellent, reads well, has tons of diaries and letters, and is entertaining. However, I gave 4 stars rather than 5 because the text has many errors, whether it be spelling or grammatical. There are many of them and it gets annoying after a while. Other than that, a great read.

A Reader from Frankfort, KY.......2000-02-07

A much needed book about the Western Theatre of the Civil War. It's a well written, thoughtfully reseached, and fascinating account of the men and officers,warts and all, of the Army of the Tennessee. Though full of details, the book keeps the reader enthralled by sweeping briskly over the Southern landscape. Highly recommended.

The book is good at pointing the seller in the right directions. The
author is causious at not going to far in giving too much advice which
causes the reader to have to do more homework. I felt it gave me more
questions than answers. I felt overwhelmed by all the steps and where
to go to accomplish the task at hand.

Easy to read and loaded with valuable tips. For example, we are building a new home and had generated plans with the aid of a home designer and builder. After reading this book, I discovered our dinning room was slightly too small. We planned on a coffered ceiling in the dinning room along with a built-in china cabinet along the wall. None of us had taken into consideration that if we wanted the chandelier centered in the coffered ceiling with the dinning table centered under the chandelier and 36" between the dinning table and china cabinet, then we would need our dinning room extended another 8" from what we had on the original plan. This tip alone was invaluable. There were also many other ideas and suggestions. This book is a must for anyone building, remodeling or purchasing a home.

"Better Houses, Better Living" isn't just one more book on what to look for when buying, building or remodeling- it is THE book to have. I haven't found a book this chock full of practical, down to earth, actually useful information in years. While other books address aesthetics and other issues, "Better Houses, Better Lviing" gets right to work from the first page.
Additionally, it is highly readable book, not written as if talking to a contractor but in language that is easy to understand and the information is easy to grasp. This is a must for anyone hunting for a new home or planning a new one. It will insure that the move they make won't just be a lateral move, but a better move, a move up and they will end up with a home that works for them. My copy won't spend much time in my home - there are way too many people whose hands I need to put it in.

Biography of a great artist.......2001-06-11

Lillian Fuchs was not only a fine violist, but was a great teacher and mentor to many, many musicians. In this book the author, who clearly admires and loves his subject, unearths many details about her life, her approach to her instrument and her teaching philosophy.

Unfortunately the book is rather clumsily written and the subject never really comes to life. I studied with Miss Fuchs for five years and got to know her very well. This book, though it contains many facts, completely misses her unique personality, her probing mind, and most of all, her rich sense of humor.

This was very informative and interesting book about the life and career of Lillian Fuchs, arguably the greatest violist/artist of all time. It gives a very good insight into her creative processes and character. Bravo Amadee!

The Book Does not Provide Adequate Answers to the SS Issue.......2003-11-02

Although the notion of an objective, unbiased source for Social Security information is welcome and even encouraged, Arthur Benavie's "Social Security Under the Gun" does not meet that test. It is clear from the beginning, despite Mr. Benavie's contention that he does not want to steer the debate in a particular direction, that he has something against the notion of allowing younger workers to devote a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts.

There are a lot of frivolous objections that Mr. Benavie makes. One of the most eggregious objections is the notion that privatizing Social Security would abridge our collective social contract to establish this particular social program. This is complete nonsense. No one in their right mind would even know what he is talking about. Although Social Security has been around for 68 years, people do not have this notion of their being involved in a "social contract" with their other fellow citizens. I fail to see how privitizing Social Security would result in people feeling more disconnected from one another.

In fact, I see just the opposite. I notice, for instance, that in my own investing, I often think of myself as an integral member of our system, part of the corporate network with fluctuating stock and bond prices. When working, I really do not see how I am connected to others when I see my wages deducted to pay for Social Security, for instance. I see a greater connection with stocks and bonds, however.

Mr. Benavie appears to believe that Americans ought to be forced to do particular things because, according to his elitist, intellectual view, Americans are either too incompetent or too stupid to save enough for their own retirement. Such a view is quite condescending and is an insult to the remarkable intelligence of the American public.

Mr. Benavie also has a hard time arguing against allowing individual investors to invest in private accounts. He argues that stock investing is risky. So? This does not serve as a good reason to ban citizens from partaking in so-called "risky" behavior, especially if doing so is a way of decreasing the burden on the Social Security system in the years to come. He fails to mention, of course, that over the long run, for an extended period of time, stocks and bonds will yield much higher growth yields than Social Security. A younger worker putting money away now, in a mutual fund, for instance, will have a substantial amount of wealth by the time they retire.

What is Benavie's answer to Social Security? More taxes and fewer benefits. Well, that's a typical liberal elitist -- Democratic answer. And I'm not going to tolerate it. Neither should any reader. This is book is not worth reading because it does not advance any new discussions or ideas on Social Security than those already discussed. It also does not go into much depth into the history or the workings of Social Security today.

And that's the way it is.

The amazing thing about this little book is that it's such a quick, easy read, and yet I feel I've absorbed so much crucial information about "reforming" Social Security. I started out thinking privatization might be a good idea. By the end I was convinced it would be a disaster. Yet Benavie's tone is calm and non-hysterical, If all economists could write as clearly as he does, it would be a lot easier to keep informed on vital issues like this one.

If you want to understand how social security works, what its problems are, and the major proposals for fixing it, read this book. It is rare to find such a clear and concise analysis of an important public policy issue.
The author explains objectively the alternative proposals for social security reform and their consequences, so readers can decide for themselves. He clarifies issues often muddied by political rhetoric and superficial media converage.
The main text is only 102 pages, with 40 pages of notes, references and index for those who wish to explore further.

No Balanced Approach In This Book.......2003-05-31

In the Introduction, Arthur Benavie tries very hard to make the case that this book offers a fair and balanced analysis of Social Security reform. It does not.

Chapters 1 and 2 are designed to present the cases for and against privatization of Social Security. In Chapter 1 (Fixing Social Security) he presents the case for saving the system through a long list of tax increases and benefit reductions. The opposing side of the argument is not presented at all.

In Chapter 2 (Should We Privatize Social Security?), he starts out by presenting as many cons as he does pros for the privatization point of view. For every item he describes what the supporters of privatization espouse, he provides a rapid response in attempt to discredit the idea. By dedicating one chapter each to the "higher taxes/lower benefits" and the "privatization" viewpoints, he must think he is being "balanced".

Bottom line...this book is advertised as a balanced analysis of Social Security reform. But it comes down clearly on the side of being against any reform designed to privatize a portion of Social Security.

This may be a good book for you if you want to read an author make the case against privatization of Social Security. If you want to truely understand the trade-offs associated with privatization, this book will be a big letdown.

At the Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862, four times as many American men died as died during the Normandy landings in World War II. Numbers such as these make the impact of the American Civil War almost incomprehensible. By focusing on people rather than numbers, The Civil War 100 gives the war a human face. Each selected individual is the subject of a brief biography, a discussion of his or her relevance, and a photograph or two. The author, Robert Wooster, admits to having no clear system for ranking his choices. Influence was deemed more relevant than skill; a military failure might therefore rank above a successful general. Indeed, only half of those selected were directly involved in the war effort. The list includes many people who influenced society in the antebellum and reconstruction periods. Both heroes and villains are featured: Abraham Lincoln understandably gets the top spot, but readers may be surprised to find John Wilkes Booth at number 25.

This book is clearly not designed as an entry-level text. Readers with some knowledge of the Civil War will find it much more rewarding. That said, Wooster does include a helpful introduction with general background, a detailed chronology, and battle maps. True buffs may argue with Wooster's rankings-- indeed, that may be half the fun--but The Civil War 100 is a real treat for anyone who knows his blues from his grays. --C.B. Delaney

This is a must read for anyone who remembers the great era of movie and television stars. Author, Robert (Bob) Sidney, is not a name the average person would know... but his name is known by virtually everyone and anyone in the entertainment field.

Bob Sidney simply but eloquently refers to himself as a dancer and choreographer... nothing more. In reality, Bob is not only a master choreographer, BUT has been a director, producer, writer, teacher, consultant, and even make-shift set designer!

Here is a man that was chosen by Irving Berlin himself to choreograph 1941's epic motion picture "This is the Army", and from that moment on, Bob Sidney was the busiest and most wanted director/choreographer in show business. Some of his credits include "The Loves of Carmen", "Jumping Jacks" with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, "Susan Slept Here", "The Opposite Sex", "Where The Boys Are", "How The West Was Won", "The Pleasure Seekers", "How to Murder Your Wife", "The Singing Nun", "The Silencers" and "Valley of the Dolls". He has produced several Broadway Shows, and His television credits are way too numerous to list (over 200 of the most watched hours on the air), but for starters, Bob was choreographer for the highly sucessful Dean Martin Show.

Along the way, Bob Sidney made a lot of friends... and at a recent booksigning, hundreds of his friends were there to grab a copy of this wonderful book. I found it quite interesting to see huge stars waiting in line behind one another to get their copy.

As Bob says, "These are tales from a life dancing with stars." He reminisces about the elite circle he was (and is) included within... As chairman of the Dean Martin Fan Center, I was anxious to read the chapter Bob wrote about his friendship with Dean... but found myself enthralled in all the other chapters about the other celebrities that he recalls too. There were many stories that I had not heard before. I couldn't put the book down and stayed up all night to finish reading it!

If you are a fan of true Hollywood and want to hear the real truth about some of the biggest names in show business (from a man who was there, and without the bull, you gotta read this. You will also be astonished at Bob Sidney's own career and talents, which now includes being an author. Robert Sidney is a very talented man and has a fabulous career, and it was such a pleasure to allow us to peek inside. "With Malice Towards Some" is fun reading and I give it 5 Stars!

An exhilarating romp with the Hollywood greats.......2003-08-22

Bob Sidney's book is refreshingly direct - he tells stories about all the great Hollywood stars he has worked with over the years - Frank Sinatra, Debbie Reynolds, Judy Garland, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and many more. They are insider's stories which haven't been told before.

Bob was primarily a choreographer, but also a writer and director - and sometime performer - and his career spanned the 40s to the 70s, working in film and TV, Broadway and night-clubs. His stories are light, personal, sometimes funny and sometimes poignant - always entertaining.

It's a great book to dip into, to pick up and put down, and be sorry when you've finished. Not many people have the opportunity to have lead such an extraordinary life as Mr Sidney, who also had an extraordinary career.... this book shares his experiences, which are fascinating and amusing.
