Mr. Chapman has an uncharacteristic nack for breaking down the complexity of his life in a witty and enormously entertaining way. A gem that should be on the bookshelf of any student of history.

5 out of 5 stars The Life That Late He Led.......2004-11-28

I have to disagree with the earlier, anonymous reviewer who says this book is drivel. I found it an enlightening and well-written book that delivers a non-partisan message, but it is written by someone who truly admires Shelby Foote. What's wrong with that? Foote is a wonderful historian, even though as many have said his volumes on the Civil War tell the story almost entirely as one of big battles and great men.

Chapman does not let his reverence for Foote's writings get in the way of telling a good story. And what a story! He came from the long-ago vanished South of the aristocrats, and along with his boyhood friend Walker Percy, who later became a celebrated novelist, the two of them tracked the changes in Southern society in their novels and other writings. Foote had his faults too, as Chapman notes ruefully: he exaggerated the depth of his friendship with the man he idolized, Nobel winner William Faulkner, who lived but a hundred miles away; he was a womanizer who just couldn't keep it in his pants; his relationship with his daughter Margaret, who became attached to the Seattle rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix, was troubled to the point that he denied they were related; and his position on race relations wasn't a very activist one. Even his relationship with Percy was strained by the two men's seesawing careers and who was up. who was down, at any given moment. The Ken Burns thing happened at exactly the right time for Shelby Foote, and from now on, people would no longer be confusing him with Horton Foote--no relation.

Chapman's "LIFE" makes me curious to see the publication of "TWO GATES TO THE CITY," the novel on which Shelby Foote again and again dashed his hopes, an unconquerable manuscript that was worth its weight in tears. Maybe someday we will see some version of it. Until then, we have all his other books to read and re-read at leisure.

      1 out of 5 stars Drivel.......2003-08-08

      C. Stuart Chapman's biography of the great historian of the Civil War is not worth purchasing. Chapman's great failing is to draw negative conclusions about Foote, as through Chapman's viewing of his subject through the lens of 21st century politics. A press secretary for the leftist Rep. Barbara Lee, Chapman's biography castigates the historian for having failed to offer himself up as a martyr during the Civil Rights struggles of the 50s and 60s. With such a "foundation" set in place, the edifice is not a pretty sight to see (or read).

5 out of 5 stars Understanding a Mind of the South.......2003-08-01

A distinctively Southern voice explores a distinctively Southern figure in C. Stuart Chapman's portait of Shelby Foote. The book not only places Foote's work in context, it provides a literary glimpse into the South as a whole, not only during the Civil War era of Foote's best known works but the Civil Rights era as well. Foote clearly exemplifies the Burdens of Southern history -- both C. Vann Woodward's and Robert Penn Warren's varieties. Chapman gives us a fascinating look at a complicated man in his place and time.

5 out of 5 stars Chapman Scores with Insightful Review into Foote, the South.......2003-06-06

Chapman's biography provides the reader with a fascinating insight into the complex mind of acclaimed author/historian Shelby Foote. Detailing the historical background and events that shaped Foote's upbringing and his ambitions as a novelist, Chapman draws clear connections between Foote's desire to reconcile his longstanding conceptions of aristocratic southern culture with the changing social and racial dynamics of the south during the civil rights era. This struggle is elucidated both within Foote's novels and in his three volume narrative of the Civil War.
This book is an absolute must read for anyone who has watched the PBS series on the Civil War or has read Foote's civil war narrative.

Mississippi has produced some of the nation's finest literary voices, includingShelby Foote and Walker Percy. Foote spent much of his career reconstructing the Civil War in a 1.6 million-word trilogy (he was the smooth-drawling storyteller in Kenneth Burns's television series on the conflict). Percy was a philosophical novelist whose work includes The Moviegoer and The Thanatos Syndrome. Not only were the two friends, but they corresponded for years, leaving behind a series of letters unearthed by biographer Jay Tolson. Tolson, the author of an exhaustive book on Percy, Pilgrim in the Ruins, shows that, unlike other Southern writers such as William Faulkner, Foote and Percy always acted as quite decent fellows, Southerners with manners and brains.

      Book Description

In the late 1940s, Walker Percy and Shelby Foote, friends since their teenage years in Greenville, Mississippi, began a correspondence that would last until Percy's death in 1990. Walker Percy, the highly regarded author of The Moviegoer, wrote six novels, two volumes of philosophical writings, and numerous essays. Shelby Foote met with early success as a novelist, but his reputation today rests more upon his massive three-volume narrative history of the Civil War, and his role as commentator in Ken Burns's documentary The Civil War. The correspondence between Percy and Foote traces their lives from the beginning of their respective careers, when they were grappling fiercely and openly with their ambitions, artistic doubts, and personal problems. Although they discuss such serious matters as the death of Foote's mother and Percy's battle with cancer, their letters are full of sly humor and good-natured ribbing. Jay Tolson has selected, edited, and annotated the letters of these two remarkable writers to shed light on their relationship and their literary careers. Includes an eight-page insert with photographs of the writers chronicling their friendship.

4 out of 5 stars Essential reading for Percy or Foote fans.......2005-04-03

It is a rare treasure to find a book like this. "Correspondence" gives insight to the artistry, friendship, and psychology of two gifted writers/curmudgeons.

A little advice to the prospective reader. Forgive Shelby Foote his apparent crankiness, which may be the most notable feature of this book. As other reviews note, Percy is absent through much of the volume. Foote's tone, already tinged with youthful didacticism, is transformed into a soliloquy which is boastful and (at times) rude.

Appearances may be misleading, however. While on the surface egotistical, Foote's often incisive letters betray far more complex motives. He searches for true conversation, for a way to gauge his art (his central pursuit). Percy may come across as aloof, or even vague, but this may be due to the hidden lifelong friendship behind these letters.

      A wonderful read

3 out of 5 stars Too much Foote, Not enough Percy!.......2001-12-13

I bought this book because of an enduring love affair with the literary works of Walker Percy. As an addition to the literary biographies of Percy written by Samway and Tolson, the letters serve their purpose well. As a letters volume on its own merits, The Correspondence of Shelby Foote and Walker Percy is unbalanced. Apparently, Foote didn't start saving Percy's letters until the exchange had been occurring for some time. Nevertheless, it is thoroughly interesting to observe Foote's massive ego as he lectures Percy, having the knowledge that Percy ultimately became the far greater literary star. If you've already delved deeply into the work and history of Walker Percy, you'll need this book. If not, find a different starting place, this is not a good place to begin.

5 out of 5 stars Pity poor Shelby Foote.......2000-10-03

Pity Shelby Foote. Most people know his as a writer of books on the Civil War. But when you read this book of letters you see that what thrilled him most was reading great literature.

The reader of this book of letters between two friends will be thrilled by talk of literature. Foote is like Herr Settembrini of Thomas Mann's "The Magic Mountain". He is so overwhelmed by humantistic learning that he finds he must educate his friend and mentor Hans Castrop, in this case Walker Percy.

It is ironic that the prodigy in this case, Walker Percy, soon eclipses the mentor. Walker Percy agonizes in his early letters about his inability to have his novels published while Foote publishes his books in rapid succession. But today Percy's "Moviegoer" and other books are still read while only Foote's "Shiloh" is really still popular. It seems Foote is stuck with Civil War fame have written his long classic on the war.

Reading Foote's letters is where I discovered Flanney O'Connor. Walker Percy and Shelby Foote spoke highly of her here. They also talk about the important of reading Marcel Proust, Faulkner, and a dozen others. Toward the end Foote begins to spew forth on the merits of reading the Greek classics. It is his description of these books and their authors that adds to one's own literary education.

The first part of the book is a little annoying because Shelby Foote threw away the letters that Walker Percy sent to him for the first many years of their correspondence. So you keep reading Shelby Foote but are not privvy to what Walker Percy as to say.

4 out of 5 stars interesting but unsettling.......2000-01-31

This was a great read, but each of the correspondents disappointed in their own ways. Percy's letters are written in an intelligent but notably vague style; Foote's have more bite and literary polish, but at the same time display a nasty streak in his personality that remained invisible in his brilliant _Civil War_.

It's a bit sickening to watch on as Foote seduces the wife of a local doctor, and later recommends to Percy (oh so wittily) that he use pillows to prop up the crotches of female UNC undergrads so that they might better serve his wishes.

On the bright side, it is hilarious to watch Foote react to a letter from a clueless librarian accusing him of failing to mention Gettysburg in his history (she seems not to have realized that it was a multi-volume work). Even more importantly, the entire collection is thought-provoking.

5 out of 5 stars Like eavsedropping on a fabulous conversation.......1999-12-14

I don't know when I have enjoyed a book of letters so much. Usually such things represent only a given writer's letters to a variety of people. This volume is a correspondence between two friends that covers five decades and in it one is able to see them grow, change and take delight in a constant verbal duel that must have been going on from the time they first met as teenagers. For two decades this 'conversation' is mostly a monologue because Foote didn't start saving Percy's letters until the 70's, but it is often easy to imagine Percy's letters from Foote's responses - his answering specific questions and arguing against certain statements.

It is so much fun to see Foote trying for 50 years to get Percy to read Proust, and Percy simply ignoring the injunctions. This is just one of the ongoing literary 'wars' that are fought between these two significant writers who, while being diametrically different in style and theme, were the closest of friends from the age of 14.

I found that once started, I couldn't stop reading. From the first chatty letter from Foote in which he proposes his desire to be a great novelist to the last 'letter' - a message read at Percy's memorial service - the book has the forward momentum of a good novel, the intellectual give and take of a Platonic dialogue and the warmth and humor that only good friends can bring to lifelong disagreements. I think this is a great book and, for all who think that literature is important, a wonderful window into the thinking of two fine minds.

          Book Description

For over two decades artist Bruce Cratsley has produced a personal, and highly poetic body of work with the dominant theme being the mysteries of light and shadow. Cratsleys images of inanimate objects, urban street scenes, and portraits of friends and lovers, possess a metaphysical peculiarity. Whether it be Cratsleys haunting streets of Paris or New York, or light falling onto and through a window, we are often reminded of Eugne Atget, Andr Kertsz, or Cratleys mentor and friend, Lisette Model. But Cratleys personal aesthetic is moored to contemporary concerns, issues of the spirit and mortality. Having been struck by AIDS, Cratsleys work of the previous ten years possesses greater immediacy. His intimate approach to the portrait, reminds us again of lifes ultimate potential, and fragility. Although they have a quality uniquely their own, these pictures call to mind the work of Peter Hujar, another guru, as well as that of David Armstrong. This definitive retrospective monograph encompasses the period 1976 through 1996, and includes representative images from every genre Cratsley pursued.

For a newbie, this is an excellent introduction. It shows you the way to proceed, if you're serious about trying. For the price, it is a bargin and should be kept as a reference. If you're like me, a yellow lighter can be quite helpfull. Well worth the price when you consider the large sums of money that can be involved.

I've always enjoyed the Complete Idiot Guide series. Why? Because it delivers the message down to earth. If you want to make money in foreclosures or have wanted to invest in them, you need to read this book.

Provides a large amount of information in a concise but easy-to-read format. Considering all of the nuances of buying foreclosures, from the legal considerations to the occupation stage, the author does a good job of capturing and conveying the essentials. The author also does a good job of communicating both public and private foreclosure opportunities, which is important in many states.
The author focuses primarily on 'investing in foreclosures' vs. 'buying a foreclosure for your primary residence.' Consider this when comparing to other books.
Could have used more specific information on where to look for foreclosure opportunities, but the book does mention that actively searching and networking is a key to the game.
Overall, a good, easy read with valuable information for anyone wishing to enhance their real estate expertise.

4 out of 5 stars Easy Easy easy.......2007-03-14

This one is really for the first time buyer. Easy to read and understand. I checked out the home buying for dummies from the library and was a little overwhelmed. The idiot's guide has a better lay out and is a good primer.

              5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2006-08-11

Though some of the information is general, this book covers about anything you'd need to know about buying or selling a home. And the information in this revised 5th edition is very much up-to-date. You can't beat it for making the world of Real Estate easy to understand. Hence, "Idiot's" Guide, and when it comes to Real Estate, that definitely includes me.

2 out of 5 stars No better than what you can get for free........2006-07-01

I got this book because my wife and I are getting ready to buy our first home and I wanted a book to guide me, and thus prevent me from making any major mistakes and to ensure I knew what was going on each step of the way. I read the entire section on buying a house (5/6 of the book) and even half of the section on selling a house just to see the other side of things (the remaining 1/6 of the book). I personally found the book gave just enough details to be frustrating.

The book will go over all the available options, but won't explore them in depth enough to help you make the right decision. For example, the book will tell you to contact multiple lenders and evaluate all the costs involved (the loan fees and if there are pre-pay penalties, not just the interest rate), but won't tell you how to really decide which loan to pick. The book will tell you that you can negotiate for some of the fees you have to pay with a mortgage to be waived by the lender or for some of the fees to be paid by the seller, but won't tell you how to spot these fees from the true, non-negotiable fees. There's a discussion of choosing the different types of homes (e.g. condo, townhouse or traditional home), but no discussion of the economic advantages of one over the other. I've heard townhouses appreciate faster, but I don't know if this is just an old-wives tale of if there is some truth to it. I still don't. Furthermore, the authors do nothing to predict future market trends, which is partly understandable since this is so difficult, but they don't even take a stab at it and the book is very current (2006).

Basically, the authors do a great job reviewing all of your options, but they don't advise you about what the *best* option would be for you. Maybe that is impossible because everyone's situation is totally different, but I'd like to see some situation specific direct advice, even if it resulted in some of the book being useless to me because it wasn't detailing my situation. Everyone's situation may be different but there aren't THAT many different situations (just starting out/family in apt moving to first house/family upgrading house/family downsizing house at retirement or because of unfortunate financial circumstances - that covers 95% of people). This would take more pages but there are pages to spare and that's my biggest gripe.

The book is organized by the steps in home buying (i.e. looking for a home/making an offer/obtaining financing/closing) but if you actually sit down and read it straight through like I did, you'll end up reading the same things over and over again. This makes the book better if you just want to read the chapter you're interested in because the chapters stand up on their own, but make it more frustrating if you read it front to back (you'll constantly be saying "yeah, I know, you told me that already, almost verbatim"). Not rehashing things would also free up pages to explore the nitty gritty in greater detail. I even found situations where full page tables were in the book twice in two seperate chapters! Completely unchanged, just printed twice when the authors were once again rehashing things they'd already covered!

In conclusion, I would have rather had concrete advice rather then the overview given here (although I think a better edited book could have had both in the same amount of space). The only other book I read that was even close to this was Suze Orman for the Young, Fabulous and Broke. That book gave very concrete advice and told you exactly what was the best things you could be doing and gave you a priority order to do them (401K then credit card debt then house down payment then Roth IRA). No concrete advice here. The book often passes off giving advice with the disclaimer "talk to your agent." That's good advice, but then why'd I get this book in the first place? Furthermore, I think to give concrete advice you have to really know your topic and I'm not sure the author's understand housing the way Orman understands personal finance.

I've been harsh so far, because that's what stands out to me, but I should say this book isn't a total waste of time, and this review has disproportinately focussed on the negatives. Bottom line, I just don't think there's much info here that you can't get for free somewhere else, like Yahoo Real Estate guides. In addition, online you can plug all your own numbers (like salary and debt burden) right into the online calculators (to tell you the maximum mortgage payment you can afford). So unless you really want the info packaged in book form I wouldn't buy this.

              Other minor nit-picks:

              1. The first part of the book is useless fluff. It covers stuff like "do you want 3 bedrooms or more" and "do you want a fireplace." I suppose it should be expected, but for me it wasn't necessary. That parts easy. Tell me how to get the best mortgage! Tell me how to get the best price!

              2. All of the examples are from Indiana which is where the authors must be from. The authors would often say things like "this is how it's done in Indiana but it might be different in your state so you should check." I brought the book for you to tell me! They should include an appendix for these things telling you how it is for all 50 states instead of saying the sames things 3 times to get the page count up. Furthermore whenever they get into these issues (usually legal issues, such as how much information the seller is required to disclose to potential buyers) they don't even tell you how to find out if you were sufficiently motivated to investigate the matter yourself.

2 out of 5 stars Not bad... but not great. .......2006-07-13

I bought both this book and "Home Buying for Dummies," and honestly I think I got one piece of useful information out of this book. Once I started reading the other book, I couldn't set it down. It was such an easy read and everything was easy to understand. Again, this book isn't bad, but it wasn't the right book for me.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing and superficial.......2006-01-31

I found this book to be very superficial and biased. I never felt that the author was in my corner nor had much experience offering objective home buying advice.

I am a big fan of Bob Bruss' column and have been very happy with his book picks. Not sure what he said about this one but I hadn't seen it on his top picks of the year list.

              1 out of 5 stars OVERSIMPLIFIED.......2005-06-15

I bought this book because of some of the lame reviews I read in the "Home Buying for Dummies" reviews. Had I spent 2 seconds to flip through and read a couple of paragraphs it would have stayed on the shelf and $20 bucks in my pocket.

On the flight to the city where my wife and I are considering buying a home, she read the Idiots Guide while I read the for Dummies. She constantly was showing me how pathetic this book is with paragraphs dedicated to "Why do you want to buy a home?" and "Banks are in this world to make money". Topics were disorganized and had no useful content. I actually was thankful that the book is double spaced with large fonts so I would have to read more of it! Within 2 minutes she wanted to take the "for Dummies" book from me.

Bottom line... Swing by the book store and see how bad this book is for yourself before you order it online. If you really want it, I'm sure there are plenty of used versions -- in near new condition, since there was nothing worthy of highlighting -- online.

5 out of 5 stars First time homebuyer abc's..........2005-01-26

While most people don't consider themselves to be an idiot, they sure can feel like one when experiencing their first homebuying venture!

I am a 20-something interested in purchasing real estate. I felt like this book answered all my questions in an easily understood format. It is broken up into chapters that help you customize your individual experience.

Some of my favorite points of interest included: from tips on finding a good lender, the importance of prequalification, explanation of points, information on first-time homebuyer's bond money, a breakdown of potential closing costs, and a realistic plan to estimate your monthly payment (i.e. "what you can afford."). NOTE: Those internet calculators are usually about $100 per month lower than what you'll actually pay.

I would recommend this book to anyone who perhaps doesn't have a financial background - but is wanting to get the knowledge to make a sound financial investment in a home.

5 out of 5 stars Don't buy or sell a home without this book!.......2004-12-15

I am in the process of buying a new home and selling my old home. This book has guided me through the entire process. Even though I'm not a first time home buyer, this is the first time that I understood the process better than my Real Estate Agent! I even knew what questions to ask so that I got a better deal on my mortgage! This book is worth every cent. It's easy to understand and well written. Remember, knowledge is power!

You have to keep in mind that this is written by a real estate agent, so he really has an agent's best interests in mind, not yours as a buyer or seller. That said, the book does contain a complete survey of buying/selling homes (mostly buying, actually), assisted by online websites. I found the text too verbose, and I wonder if the publisher or author gets paid for the sites they recommend, for a lot of other useful sites aren't mentioned at all.

              5 out of 5 stars Next best thing to a self-explanatory Realtor!.......2001-08-10

Over a year ago I borrowed this book from a friend, and read through it during the entire process of my first purchase of a house. It helped very easily to follow all that was happening, all the terminology, etc. and in some cases, to be ahead, and expect the next steps.

It was so helpful, that I decided to buy it for myself this year, as we're considering the sale of our place, and getting us a larger house.

If you're going to buy or sell a house, you have got to read it: it'll be of extreme help.

This book made my life so much easier by explaining in easy to follow steps how to do everything i needed to sell homes and purchase a new one. It is very thorough, covers all topics from A to z and the recommendations on web sites were right on. The author knows his stuff. This is the first Idiot's Guide book I've bought and I'm so glad i did.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch Book.......2000-06-15

I got this book for my dad for Father's Day because he and my mother are planning on selling their home and buying a smaller home. the For Sale By Owner comments in some of the other reviews caught my eye because my parents want to sell their home themselves. I started looking through the guide out of curiosity and found myself reading more than half the book. Besides being informative and detailed, it's actually interesting and somewhat funny. i ended up giving it to my father early and he read the entire guide in two days. he said it was the first time he's ever read a how-to book from cover to cover and he's bought over 50! i recommend this book to all people who are planning on buying and selling a home in the future (which is just about everybody) because it is exceptionally clear, informative and jam-packed with advice, facts and data. And it makes a great gift. My dad loved it and is using it to get their home ready to sell By Owner.

              5 out of 5 stars superb book-saved the day.......2000-06-06

I had to take the time to review this book because my husband and I almost lost our dream home. This superb book helped us save our transaction at the last minute and avoid a horrible lawsuit. Thank God a friend referred us to this book or we wouldn't be living in the perfect home for us. We were buying a home For Sale By Owner and were working with the most difficult seller imaginable. With the help of this guide we not only salvaged the deal, but got better terms and more repairs made to the home. Thank you so much to the author and publisher for writing this book-it's phenomenal. The negotiating chapter is worth thousands of dollars. And to all those buying or selling homes By Owner or even with Realtors-don't do anything until you buy this book. You will be so glad you did.

This isn't so much a book about the music business as it is about the memories of a very special individual. While reading this you'll find yourself laughing, crying, and rolling around on the ground trying to find the crouton that fell out of your salad. But if you're less of the nostalgic type and more the get-up-and-go type, I suggest purchasing "The Music Business Bundle" from Platinum Millenium.

                        Book Description

Joseph Eagle Elk (1931-91) was an effective and highly respected traditional Lakota healer. He practiced for nearly thirty years, treating serious physical and mental illnesses among the people of the Rosebud Reservation and elsewhere. In 1990 he began collaborating on his memoir with Gerald Mohatt, a close friend and cross-cultural psychologist. Eagle Elk's story of his life, practice, and beliefs provides a uniquely introspective, demystified, and informative look at the career of a traditional Native American healer. We learn how a persistent vision and recurring visits by thunder spirits led Eagle Elk long ago to become a healer. On a more general level, we gain valuable insights into how Lakota healers practice today. Eagle Elk's story and teachings also demonstrate the importance of community support and consensus in the development of traditional healers. Gerald Mohatt's perspective as a cross-cultural psychologist enables him to highlight the psychological dimensions and efficacy of Eagle Elk's healings and place them within a cross-cultural context. Eagle Elk's life and career are presented in a way that brings together formative episodes from his life, selected teachings that emerged from those experiences, and case studies in healing. This arrangement allows readers to grasp the close relationship between the personal and cultural dimensions of traditional healing and to understand how and why this practice continues to affect and help others. Gerald Mohatt is a professor of psychology and education at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and the founding president of Sinte Gleska University, the Rosebud Sioux tribal college. He is the coauthor of Transforming the Culture of Schools: Yup'ik Eskimo Examples.

                        5 out of 5 stars Jerry Mohatt's Priceless Gift.......2003-02-09

I was so impressed with this book - it struck so close to home - that I could not read it all at once. Like Mohatt, I lived with these people, I Sundanced with Joe Eagle Elk's father, ceremonied, got drunk, into trouble & rose again to help people. Mohatt's text is so close to the actual truth of the conditions on the reservation it literally scared me. That's why I had to stop reading from time to time. The Price of a Gift is the equal of Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions, which is one of the great books about Lakota spirituality.

5 out of 5 stars Honors the true voice.......2001-07-01

This is a remarkable work that honors the true voice of a Lakota medicine man and the voices of his people. Mohatt's labor is not to analyze or interpret so much as present an experience which can only begin to be appreciated or understood when the suffering, missteps, fears, and clowning of the healer are shown along with their transcendence. Eagle Elk was an ordinary man who resisted but finally gave himself over to his calling. There are many books that romanticize tokens of Native cultures or presume to make use of them; this is not that sort of book. Like Fadiman's, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, this is a work of great reverence.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid, invaluable contribution to Native American studies.......2000-08-07

The story of Joseph Eagle Elk, Lakota Healer (1931-91), as told to Gerald Mohatt, cross-cultural psychologist, is simply and beautifully told. The effect of many mirrors of the gift of Joseph Eagle Elk derives in part from testimonials by people who he knew and helped to heal themselves. The sacrifice, persecution, and exhausting , demanding life of the traditional Lakota healer are fully portrayed. But the beauty that sings through in Price of a Gift is undeniable. Just to read such a book, just to know such a person lived and touched others, is profound and impacting in itself. An awareness of the core value of our lives radiates through the stories of the life of Eagle Elk. It is impossible to avoid the basic message of this book, with all its humble compassion. Without distortion, greed, evil, or pettiness, the matter of spiritual healing both as duty and joy is its glorious burden. Black Elk's vision included an awareness that the Lakota legacy would include an intrument of healing. The Price Of A Gift is evidence of that legacy. What a gift it is, to us all.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful, Powerful Book.......2000-06-28

This is a must-read for everyone interested in healthcare, healing, mental health and/or Lakota culture and spirituality. It's a biography of the late Joseph Eagle Elk, which is riveting and remarkable. And as an extra bonus, the last chapter consists of a lively, multicultural discourse on the spiritual aspects of health and healing. I wish it were required reading for all healthcare professionals in the U.S.! As a Lakota, I found the book accurate and very moving. It's also one of the few books about Indigenous Tribal People written by a European-American that is truly and deeply respectful. The author conveys the complexity of Lakota culture without being patronizing or pseudo-mystical. Thank you, Mr. Mohatt, for this beautiful book.
