It has been almost eighty years since Freud wrote these lines, yet, money is still a disturbing topic. Therapists are often as uncomfortable as their clients discussing the fee, and this reticence can undermine the therapeutic relationship. Increasingly, it is recognized that money plays a key role in therapy and that it is necessary to clear the air about this ancient taboo. Breaking the silence, this book illuminates the problems of fee guilt and fee avoidance and proposes solutions based on a clarified understanding of what is therapeutic for all involved parties.
Providing an overview of the issues, the book first examines the significance of the fee in the psychotherapeutic process and its paradoxical nature. The meaning of money and the philosophy of service for a fee is also discussed. Exploring patients' attitudes about the fee, chapters in the second section illustrate how it can operate as a barrier to entering or remaining in therapy. The relationship between the fee and changes in the patients' financial circumstances is discussed and examples of questions that commonly cause discomfort for therapists are presented.

Couldn't have written without it........2005-08-05
Ms. Tobin asks detailed questions about your life and draws stories out of you by sparking specific memories and showing how to make them interesting. She is helpful whether you have comical stories to tell or painful ones. My grandchildren and great grandchildren find my autobiography fascinating and not boring thanks to BetteLou Tobin. Couldn't have done it without her book.

Cultural trusteeship is a subject that fascinates those who wonder about the relationship between power and culture. What compels the wealthy to serve on the boards of fine arts institutions? How do they exercise their influence as trustees, and how does this affect the way arts institutions operate? To find out, Francie Ostrower conducted candid personal interviews with 76 trustees drawn from two opera companies and two art museums in the United States.
Her new study demonstrates that members of elite arts boards walk a fine line between maintaining their status and serving the needs of the large-scale organizations they oversee. As class members whose status depends in part on the prestige of the boards on which they serve, trustees seek to perpetuate arts boards as exclusive elite enclaves. But in response to pressures to increase and diversify the audiences for arts institutions, elite board members act in a surprisingly open manner in terms of organizational accessibility and operations.

Subject- BEL CANTO Principles and Practices- Author- Cornelius Reid
Mr.Reid, as difficult as it is to write down the Bel Canto Structure of Singing, has done an excellent job of attempting to get it on paper, as close to the real thing as I have ever read. The book is also very interesting in its writing and is enjoyable and fairly easy to read. I say this, being one of many who say they teach this method, and one of the very few, who actually knows and understands what Bel Canto is in singing. In his other, later writings on this subject, while there are truths in these works, Mr. Reid does somewhat stray from the purity of this method, perhaps in an attempt to not be so heartily disagreed with, as most singing/voice teachers, the majority as it were, have not a clue to what he was writing about. I strongly suggest that this book, for reference, be in everbody's musical library.

Robert Ullman and Judyth Reichenberg-Ullman are naturopathic and homeopathic physicians who have also studied with numerous spiritual teachers. Mystics, Masters, Saints, and Sages: Stories of Enlightenment is their seventh book, in which their "intent is to capture the experience of enlightenment as clearly and succinctly as possible."
While recognizing that each individual's experience will be unique, the Ullmans believe that the stories of others will serve as models or signposts for those who are still seeking. They emphasize that "no one religion, country, socioeconomic class, or gender has laid special claim to enlightenment." They've chosen a diverse collection of stories, ranging from Buddha to St. Catherine of Siena to Suzanne Segal. A total of thirty-three stories are told.
Each story focuses on the moment of transformation in each individual's life. The Ullmans include a brief informational essay, describing the culture and times the individual lived in and his or her teachings. The enlightenment stories themselves are in the words of the masters themselves whenever possible; or from those closest to them.
An extensive bibliography provides a variety of sources for readers wishing to delve further into the lives and times of the individuals.
Although every enlightenment experience is different, the authors describe the common elements they discovered. These include interconnectedness and ego transcendence, timelessness and spaciousness, acceptance, beyond pleasure and pain, clarity, and shattering of preconceived notions.
In his foreword, His Holiness The Dalai Lama says "each human being has an equal opportunity to attain wisdom, happiness, and enlightenment by cultivating a correct motivation-a sincere aspiration to benefit all sentient beings-and engaging in diligent practice." He adds that Mystics, Masters, Saints, and Sages "is a valuable, inspiring book." It belongs in the library of all readers seeking spiritual insight.
Fascinating and disturbing.......2002-07-17
33 stories of enlightenment, straight from the horse's mouth. Thirteen of the enlightened persons in the book were born in the 20th century, and photographs are included of many of them. This in itself helps me overcome the sense that these folks are completely "other."
The stories of enlightenment cover as wide a spectrum as you could imagine, from 16 year old boys in India who suddenly attained enlightenment, to middle age businessmen, to the very troubling story of Suzanne Segal, a young pregnant women whose mind suddenly disengaged from her body one day as she stepped onto a bus. For some, their experience was the culmination of a long-sought spiritual release. For others, it was spontaneous and not entirely pleasant.
The absence of Jesus in this book is regretable, but perhaps the lack of any first-hand account of His experience excuses that (though I think John 14-17 would have made a nice addition). Several Christian mystics are included however.
Apart from the absence of Jesus, the editorial choices are excellent. The editorial comments, however, leave something to be desired. Often the little introductory blurb simply pre-tells the story that is told quite clearly in the excerpt to follow. There's no point in quoting what someone is about to say! In general, however, enough biographical information is provided to place the writings of each enlightened person in context.
If you have read (or experienced) some mysticism and wonder where this is all going or how enlightenment actually comes about, this book is for you. If you want a theoretical or philosophic introduction to mysticism, look elsewhere. For me, this book was very-- well pardon the pun, but very enlightening! The variety or paths and yet the commonality of experience does lead to some conclusions. The honesty in including some experiences that were not all sweetness and light is also important.
The authors deliver exactly what they promise: descriptions of enlightenment itself, told by those who have lived it.
This is an encyclopedia of Enlightenment.......2002-03-06
I read this book thoroughly upto about 120 pages and coudln't read any more. This is best kept for encyclopedia usage. If you are doing some research on religions and spiritual enlightenment, this book will come in handy. However, if you are planning to read this for fun, please don't buy this....this book is not intended for novel type of readers. If you don't believe me, read this book...I warned you.

after hearing Sage speake on the radio her story really moved me and i am very glad o have invested in her little gem of a book.
This book made a difference for me, i big one, it really showed me how to take control of the important areas of my life and to have a no BS attitude.
Most of all Sage made a huge impact on my finances and managing my emotions, i just really enjoyed the teachings and words of wisdom.
i love what Sage represents and i love this book.

Different, but heartfelt.......2006-10-17
This book really is out of the norm, it is just Sage being true to herself i guess. Sage has a unique but uplifting take on life and no doubt her life experiences have really made the journey that much more enlightening for her.
Personally i really appreciate her efforts in putting a book together inlight of her current condition and hardship. I think this book shows what someone with heart and little else can do. As for the content and onformation in the book i have to say that it really helped and uplifted me, especially all the powerful sayings that obviously mean alot to her.
In summary i would suggest this book not only as a great reference to great ancient wisdom but also as a reminder of what an indiviaual can do despite the challenges of life.
Sages wisdom, advice and attitudes definately gave me the pick up that my life needed, she really taches about the beauty, accountability and power within you.
I think she has done a great job, and i give this book my full praise.

I've been reading and collecting books of quotations since I was about 13, and this is one of the best I've found. The quotes aren't arranged by category, so every one comes as a pleasant surprise. And although the book title would make you think this is merely another collection of "positive" quotations, that isn't true. There's something for whatever mood you're in. I can't say enough good things about this book.

I haven't read it but am replacing my brother's copy which is literally falling apart from use. Since he is an aficionado of quote books, and this is his favorite of 30 years, that should be some kind of recommendation.
Fantastic Literature Quotes and beyond.......1998-05-10
I LOVE this book. It is not compiled by subject so I can read right through it and not only hear about subjects beginning with 3 lettters of the alphabet. The quotes are widely varied and come from fantastic, well known books as well as books I have later been prompted to read. I can not recommend this book enough. The quotes are thoughtful and intriguing. If you enjoy quote books, I can not imagine a better choice.
