5 out of 5 stars Life Can Be Great After Exiting the Corporate World.......2003-11-28

As an Executive Coach I have often referred to and recommended to many of my clients that they read Retire and Thrive. Most have done what I suggested and their feedback to me was very positive.
Many of my clients are in their late forties and fifties and even though they hold demanding jobs, they are always thinking about their third third of life after their corporate careers end. They know that there are another twenty to thirty years ahead of them where they need to create a valid reason to get out of bed every morning with some enthusiasm. Retire and Thrive has been a source of information and inspiration to so many of them as they ponder both their present and their future. The book has been just as useful to me personally as it has been to my clients.

5 out of 5 stars Real world guidance for real world challenges.......2003-11-26

I found Otterbourg's Retire and Thrive a wonderfully refreshing change from all the career and life advice books. Easy to read. I felt like he and the people he profiled were sitting in my living room simply chatting with me about their experiences. His profiles of people who have "been there" gave real world suggestions. Reading the book was like having two dozen mentors offering guidance about how to deal with real world challenges.

I especially liked the profiles that told why the person made the life changes they made...some of the changes were forced on them (downsizing, illness, etc.) but even more often they chose the changes and had the courage take the big step.

Highly recommend Retire and Thrive. Also, should be part of any career counselor's library on any educational level. Good example to young people that life isn't over at 30, 40, 50 or beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewing Retire and Thrive.......2003-11-19

Otterbourg's book Retire and Thrive (3rd Ed.)is a very useful and enjoyable read for anyone planning for retirement or only dreaming about its eventuality. It includes personal stories of people who have left both jobs and "lifework" and have pursued other wonderful endeavors. These include hobbies, volunteer work, politics, advanced education, part-time work and 2nd careers. There is the right mix of "nuts and bolts" planning and envisioning a future.

5 out of 5 stars Retire and Thrive.......2003-11-13

With an unbelievable variety of choices facing those considering retirement, there is no easy way to approach this major change of life's status. But, I found Bob Otterbourg's book, Retire & Thrive, one of the best-researched and easy-to-understand sources of information I've seen in a long time. As one who manages a trade organization representing the business-format franchise sector, I deal on a daily basis with many who seek the solution to their dreams of entrepreneurship through franchising. More and more of these folks are at that magic point when they can retire but sincerely want meaningful activity in their life. Franchising can offer that opportunity. Bob's advice in how to investigate a franchise offers a no-nonsense approach.

5 out of 5 stars Retiring and starting over is worth the effort!.......2003-11-12

I loved this book and all the real life examples. Anyone who is considering retiring and becoming a coach potato will take a second look when they read about people who are over 50 years of age and have found some enormously rewarding ways to start all over again. The book gives retirement strategies to assist anyone considering a second career at middle age. The book is a motivating, stimulating example of how you can success if you really try and want to make it. Many of the examples are individuals who started over in a completely new career - and how they got there. I recommend this as great reading to ANYONE over 50 who wants to thrive and survive!

      4 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......1998-09-16

As a student of the Civil War, I have read many books about the subject, and this one to me ranks as among the best.

Steven Ambrose is America's best historical biographer and proves it in this outstanding study of Emory Upton, a hero of the Civil War and a brilliant tactician who was the first to recognize the need for new army tactics brought about by the changing technology of the Civil War.

Ambrose covers Upton's full life story, his brilliant tactical evolutions of the War, and his struggle to modernize the Army manual of tactics.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book because it reveals a little known chapter of American Military history and the life of a figure who played a deep, and perhaps not fully appreciated role in it.

Perhaps the best line from the book is General Sherman's description of Emory Upton: "Thoughts are ephemeral, deeds substantial. To unite both requires genius."

The same can be said of Mr. Ambose's work.

            Book Description

Lieutenant Samuel Churchill Robertson and his Crow Indian Troop at Fort Custer have been largely overshadowed by Lieutenant Edward Casey's Cheyenne Scouts. This book traces the origins of the United States Army's experiment of using Indians as regular enlisted men filling out Troop L in most of the regiments. The history of Fort Custer's Indian contingent and its commander is followed from its initial conception in 1890 to its demise in 1895.

Based on an article, originally called "Our Indian Contingent" published in HARPER'S WEEKLY in 1892, Robertson tells first-hand, of this challenging episode. His struggles to get the unit started and keep it going are recounted in detail.

Originally done in collaboration with frontier photographer Orlando Scott Goff, whose photographs were replaced in HARPER'S WEEKLY by Frederic Remington artwork, this book contains both the recently discovered Goff photos and the Remington drawings.

Interesting appendices and additional writings of this attempt to recruit Indians as regular soldiers round out this important contribution to the military history of the West.

5 out of 5 stars Plan on leaving the cities? This book can help........2005-01-04

Are you tired of dry matter of-fact reading when it comes to homesteading or related books? This book is easy to read, informative, and yet funny. The author has a great sense of humor, but at the same time give practical information on what to look for when buying a place in the country. The book discusses first, whether or not a move to the country is your ideal dream. He then describes places to avoid moving to, and what to expect once you have moved. The book has important information on demographics, states with watertables, high crime states, eco-zones, etc.. The book is very useful and the author gives information from bureaus to write to in order to get further information on a particular state you are considering moving to. Overall, I highly recoomend this book, it won't show you how to milk a cow, but it is a very useful tool in starting your search for the ideal country property of your dreams.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for moving to the country I have seen.......1997-03-26

I have been planning a move to the country for a few years now and have collected a number of books. It was not until I got this book that my plans are beginning to solidify. It has a lot of very practical advice mixed in with humour that makes it a treasure on my bookshelf. It is a must for anyone who is planning that "back to the land" move

This is one of the most useful books that I own! I found it humorous, extremely well researched and answered all my questions about finding MY ideal country home

                                  Book Description

In this innovative and exciting synthesis of historical analysis, literary criticism, and personal essay, Dorothee E. Kocks explores the links between place and political ideals in the twentieth century, focusing in particular on the iconography of the American West. Dream a Little explores the American tradition of using the land to reveal and elaborate our dreams for social justice.
Writing with a novelist's sensitivity toward language, Kocks explores the idea that Americans have historically looked to the land for answers to society's problems. To illustrate this point, she shows that the frontier state with its homestead program was actually the predecessor of the modern welfare state. Instead of money, the federal government gave away land. Kocks shows how we have "forgotten" the politics and history behind this giveaway and unravels the significance of this forgetting for our national consciousness.
In the second half of the book, Kocks journeys into three symbolic landscapes: the West, the family farm, and the small community. She looks at these landscapes through the eyes of writers Mari Sandoz and Josephine Johnson, and civil rights activist Ella Baker. Interweaving her own life experiences in this analysis, she traces the relationship between geography and democracy, and of the hopes we attach to the West.

4 out of 5 stars I wish that it had been more about Baker herself........2003-03-19

Jazz Cleopatra is a slim volume (269 pages of text, plus notes and bibliography) but clearly a well-researched and well-written one. Rose's extensive notes and bibliography give a small idea of how much thinking went into the writing of the book, and indeed it has the feel of something which has been carefully considered.

It is worth emphasizing that the subtitle of the book is "Josephine Baker in Her Time". I stress the point because I think that the reader should expect that this is not so much a biography (although biography is an important element) as it is a contextual portrait. Rose spends a lot of time on Baker not just as a person, but as an icon and the book is often closer to cultural criticism than "true" biography.

This is not a bad thing, necessarily. It is just that I was looking more for biography and probably more for personality and that is not what this book is about.

I honestly must admit I was surprised - schocked in fact - with seriousness, love and depth this author approached a subject which would many consider lightweight. As a difference from many other celebrated biographers who are basically just listing recording dates,Rose goes into describing the atmosphere around Paris in 1920's,what a half nude black woman on the stage meant to european audience at the time, all of a sudden we have discussion about Picasso,Hitler,De Gaulle and the whole book is just simply fascinating. On many occasions there were clever observations about life - I find myself seriously thinking about my own life while reading a book about a person who doesnt have anything in common with me - its almost a biblical saga about a strong individual,a fighter and survivor in a world that objects to anybody who stands above the crowd.Baker could have just used her sex appeal to get rich and built herself from the poverty, instead she changed the world around her and used all her energy to spread humanity wherever she went (it made me think about Lennon lyrics:"you may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one").Rose doesn't just idolise Baker, there is a understanding that such a strong personality was as powerful to audience as overbearing to people close to her in private life, which seems to be a destiny of anybody with a big influence.
Instead of another entertainer-biography I stumbled upon serious and deep analysis of fascinating character, brave and honest, sensitive woman.Bravo!

                                  5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Heroine.......2000-08-27

Josephine Baker was a unique entertainer, we all know, but she was also an amazing woman off stage.

This fascinating biography satisfies not only the interests of musicians and jazz fans but also those readers interested in Black history and the lives of remarkable women. I read it twice, I loved it so much. Good sense of mid 20th century Paris, and other details really do come alive.

4 out of 5 stars Tells about the exciting life of the great Baker.......1999-03-10

"Jazz" is very compelling, very vivid! It leaves nothing out and informs the reader of cetain aspects of Baker's life that maybe one did not know about. She contributed a lot to the Civil Rights movement and was considered to be ahead of her time.I,personally, recommend "Jazz Cleopatra" to all who was, is, and wants to be a fan of Josephine Baker!!

                                          1 out of 5 stars A HALF-BAKED REWRITE OF MARI SANDOZ'S BOOK.......1999-10-07

The Author says he was inspired from Mari Sandoz's book on Crazy Horse which is all fine and good but this has to be considered fiction--yet it is constantly cataloged as non-fiction. Please, researching this era is already tough enough. If you want a good book on Crazy Horse get Mari Sandoz's and if you want to balance another opinion on it get Larry McMurtry's book--who is critical of Sandoz. But if you still want to get it, you've been warned.
