Book Description
Providing comparisons to the United States and Britain, this book examines Japan's postwar consumer protection movement. Organized largely by and for housewives and spurred by major cases of price gouging and product contamination, the movement led to the passage of basic consumer protection legislation in 1968. Although much of the story concerns the famous "iron triangle" of big business, national bureaucrats, and conservative party politics, Maclachlan takes a broader perspective. She points to the importance of activity at the local level, the role of minority parties, the limited utility of the courts, and the place of lawyers and academics in providing access to power. These mild social strategies have resulted in a significant amount of consumer protection.
Book Description
Between Mecca and Beijing examines how a community of urban Chinese Muslims uses consumption to position its members more favorably within the Chinese government’s official paradigm for development. Residents of the old Muslim district in the ancient Chinese capital of Xi’an belong to an official minority (the Hui nationality) that has been classified by the state as “backward” in comparison to China’s majority (Han) population. Though these Hui urbanites, like the vast majority of Chinese citizens, accept the assumptions about social evolution upon which such labels are based, they actively reject the official characterization of themselves as less civilized and modern than the Han majority.
By selectively consuming goods and adopting fashions they regard as modern and non-Chinese—which include commodities and styles from both the West and the Muslim world—these Chinese Muslims seek to demonstrate that they are capable of modernizing without the guidance or assistance of the state. In so doing, they challenge one of the fundamental roles the Chinese Communist government has claimed for itself, that of guide and purveyor of modernity. Through a detailed study of the daily life—eating habits, dress styles, housing, marriage and death rituals, religious practices, education, family organization—of the Hui inhabitants of Xi’an, the author explores the effects of a state-sponsored ideology of progress on an urban Chinese Muslim neighborhood.

Book Description
The journalistic profile is one of the most popular, widely read types of magazine feature writing. Helen Benedict, a master of the genre, has collected for Portraits in Print nine of her best pieces, and provided a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the art of portrait journalism.
Among the persons profiled here are Joseph Brodsky, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Susan Sontag, Paule Marshall, Bernard Malamud, and Beverly Sills. In a general introduction and in lively discussions after each profile, Helen Benedict describes how she selected the subjects, got them to agree to be interviewed, convinced the magazines' editor's to assign her the pieces, prepared for the interviews, and set about writing each one after the research and interviewing were complete. Benedict also discusses how much confidence to betray, how personal to get, what to leave out, and the writer's power over the profile subject. This is fascinating reading, especially for aspiring writers who hope to learn more about the skills and practices of this popular genre.
Portraits in Print concludes with an Afterward by the famous muckraker and author of The American Way of Death, Jessica Mitford. Mitford takes the opposite tack, in an amusing essay about what it is like to be an interviewee.

Book Description
This is the compelling yet disturbing story of Corbett Mack (1892–1974), an opiate addict who was a member of the Nuumuu (Numa), or Northern Paiute. The Northern Paiute are best known as the people who produced Wovoka, the Ghost Dance prophet whose revitalistic teachings swept the Indian world in the 1890s. Mack is from the generation following the collapse of the Ghost Dance religion, a generation of Nomogweta or “half-breeds” (also called “stolen children”)—Paiute of mixed ancestry who were raised in an increasingly bicultural world and who fell into virtual peonage to white (often Italian) potato farmers.
Around the turn of the century, the use of opium became widespread among the Paiute, adopted from equally victimized Chinese laborers with whom they worked closely in the fields. The story of Corbett Mack is an uncompromising account of a harsh and sometimes traumatic life that was typical of an entire generation of Paiute. It was a life born out of the turmoil and humiliation of an Indian boarding school, troubled by opiate addiction, bound to constant labor in the fields, yet nonetheless made meaningful through the perseverance of Paiute cultural traditions.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I thougt it was..........2000-01-10
This is the story of Corbett Mack, a "Stolen Child" (half blood) of the Northern Paiute of the late 1800's. It tells the story in his own words of what it was like to be unaccepted in the white world nor the Indian world. The plight of the Notrhern Paiute after the arrival of the whiteman. He became an alcohol and opiate addict, and lead a tragic life that was somewhat typical of Native Americans during that time.
Judging the book by it's title I had hoped it was about the life of the Northern Paiute prior to white man's arrival. A good book for this purpose is "Indians of The Plateau and Great Basin" by Victoria Sherrow.

Book Description
Architects of Our Fortunes is the first publication of the Civil War letters and journals of Eliza A. W. Otis and her husband, Harrison Gray Otis, who went on to become the publishers of the Los Angeles Times. These intimate letters and journal entries reveal an earlier and simpler chapter in their lives, when he was a printer who joined the Union army and she was a poet and teacher who traveled through the Upper South to stay close to her soldier husband. Their writings reflect their love for each other, the fears aroused by the war, and the shaping of their ambitions and moral purpose by the forces of history in a tumultuous time.
The book is divided into three parts. The first documents are letters written from Harrison to Eliza just after their marriage in 1859. Eliza's journal, which she kept from 1860 to 1863, forms the second, much longer, section. The journal draws a highly readable portrait of this young newlywed, whose thoughts and experiences tell us much about the women of her era. Her candid comments on the people around her are especially revealing of her own character and of Victorian sensibility. The final section, a brief Civil War diary written by Harrison in the field from 1862 to 1863, provides a common soldier's view of that great struggle.
The three sets of documents shed light not only on the Otis family but also on the experience of ordinary Americans during the Civil War. They also suggest the widespread impact of the war on the development of the West. Harrison and Eliza Otis were but two of the thousands of soldiers and their families who resettled in California after the war to begin a new life. The experience and ideals expressed in the documents in this book were widely shared. The emergence of the Otises as major public leaders in Southern California and the success of the Los Angeles Times grew out of their struggle during the Civil War years and the values they forged as a consequence of that conflict.
Customer Reviews:
The Civil War through the eyes of two literary stars.......2001-07-14
My review may be somewhat prejudiced because Ann Condon and I collaborated on our books. Ann has taken the diaries and correspondence of two literary figures from southern California whose writing efforts may have started in the mountains of West Virginia during the Civil War and put them together in a fine book. Dr. Condon sets the stage for the works of Harrison Gray and Eliza Otis with an introduction to this husband and wife team. The diary of Eliza Otis is particularly well writen and a wonderful insight to a woman's view of the Civil War. Her descriptions of the wild country of the Kanawha, New and Gauley River country of West Virginia are exceptional. What is sad from a historian's perspective is that these writers did not continue their diaries beyond the summer of 1863 or that they are not available. This wonderful book provides a view of the Civil War beyond battles and campaigns giving a wonderful insight of the time.

This encyclopedia doesn't play favorites, capturing personalities from both sides of the law in brisk thumbnail sketches. From Jane Addams, a leading social reformer who helped establish the first juvenile court in the 1890s, to Fernando Wood, one of 19th-century New York's most corrupt mayors, the cast of characters runs the gamut of the good, the bad, and those caught in between up to the present day. Janet Reno, who became the first female attorney general of the United States in 1993, is here, along with her troubles connected to the siege on the Waco, Texas, compound of David Koresh's religious cult, the Branch Davidians. There are the usual notorious suspects--Bonnie and Clyde, "Wild Bill" Hickok, and Meyer Lansky, among others--as well as a wealth of lesser-known notables like William Peist, a turncoat cop who supplied information to Mafia crime boss John Gotti, and John A. Larson, a former police officer and practicing psychiatrist who invented the polygraph "lie detector" test in 1921. The bulk of the passages cover the past two centuries, but there are significant contributions that date further back, including Hammurabi, king of ancient Babylon, whose legal code embodied the idea of "an eye for an eye."
The dictionary is accessible and tightly written, with a sophisticated style that belies the brevity of its passages. Many of the entries come with suggested books and further reading on the personalities, along with a wealth of historical photos and drawings. An extensive index allows for easy searching, not just for the 600 people profiled but for subjects such as "autopsies," "fingernail scrapings," and "self-incrimination," which in turn link to notables in those areas. And a thoughtful introduction delves into the difference between morality and legality, and the evolution of today's police system. Like Bartlett's Familiar Quotations and Black's Law Dictionary, this book deserves a place on a well-stocked reference shelf. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

Customer Reviews:
Some good info.........2006-03-25
This book gave me some good information about places to get married. It had a little bit more "fluff" that I had to sift through to get the information, but it was useful.
VERY CONVINCING.......2005-01-02
My fiancée is a huge Vegas fan. He tries to go there once a year with the guys. He gave me this book as a joke, hoping that I might consider Vegas for our nuptials. Well, guess what? I'm thinking about it. Like most people, I think, I have always considered Las Vegas weddings a bit cheesy, but that's all in the past. As the author points out, Vegas stands for fun with glitz and glamour thrown in. Well, I probably won't get married in Vegas (although I now know where to turn for chapel-shopping), but I can certainly see why so many people visit Las
Vegas again and again.
GREAT POP CULTURE BOOK.......2004-12-16
Last March my wife and I had a renewal of vows ceremony at a Las Vegas wedding chapel with an Elvis impersonator. This book perfectly captures the fun and excitement of our experience. This book makes a perfect souvenir of the occasion. We are giving copies to all our guests who had joined us. For all pop culture buffs this is a perfect book for their personal libraries.
