A useful guide.......2007-03-22

Admittedly, all I've known of Thailand is that many Cambodian's fled to it during the seventies, and, I happen to love Thai food. Reading "Retiring in Thailand" by Philip Bryce and Sunisa Wongdee Terlecky allowed me to visit the country and come away with a good deal of knowledge. While I'm nowhere near ready to retire, I can see this is a viable and desirable option!

The book is in five parts. The first is an introduction to Thailand, opening the reader up to customs and facts, amenities and culture, and offering the testimonials of a few folks who have retired in Thailand. Part two is the how-to section, describing in detail how to go about preparing for your retirement there. Information on passports, visas, taxes, social security, health care, and even plans for your will are all included. This information is for those coming from the U.S. and the U.K.. Part three details helpful hints on living and adjusting to Thai life, explaining mannerisms and etiquette, what you can expect and what will be expected of you. Part four examines the different areas of Thailand, giving the pros and cons of each major retirement spot. Part five is a plethora of reference information including websites to check out, a calendar of national holidays, a list of common items and their cost, and much more.

The book is an ideal opening guide when considering retirement in Thailand. It is also a perfect introduction to Thailand itself. If you've known as little as I have about this beautiful country, you'll be happy to sit back and explore through the pages of the book. "Live in paradise for pennies on the dollar" certainly seems to be true.

Don't waste your money.......2007-02-18

This little book offers nothing that you can't find online. In fact, chances are that information online is much more current than what this book contains.

Why Learn the Hard Way?.......2007-01-01

Well written, up to date, seems quite thorough! Detailed yet quite readable. Certainly lots of useful information it would take a while to find yourself. Invaluable insights on social realities, and tips to navigate by, from two people who have roots there.

Every book necessarily reflects the experiences of the author(s). When they are in that foreign country, have plenty of experience, can write, and interview others for useful stories and antidotes, its worth hearing, paying the attention, gaining the benefit of those experiences. In my experience (Belize, Panama), this book is some of the best of the genre.

Highly recommended, as is Phillip's other book, How to Buy Land and Build a House in Thailand. If you plan to do that also, it will save you (and will me!) a lot of pain and frustration, I am sure. Very detailed yet readable, addressing both the interpersonal and technical well. Unqualified 5 stars, as is this book. Thanks, Phillip....!

Excellent Book on Retiring in Thailand!.......2006-11-28

As a visitor to Thailand virtually every year for close to 20 years,
and a current semi-retiree in Thailand, I found Phillip Bryce's book
most helpful.

There is a wealth of well researched,as well as clearly experientially
based information,many of which even regular, long term visitor like
myself did not know.

Because work,land ownership and long term visas in Thailand can be
surprisingly complex to deal with, I found Mr Bryce's time tested advice
was invaluable.

I would consider this book a "must" for anyone who wants to spend more
than a few weeks at a time in Thailand on an ongoing basis.

For The Clueless.......2004-10-01

It might have been that I expected something different from this book, but all this is is a collection of short chapters on various countries. Information on geography, currency, etc., with bits and pieces on the housing market, local customs, and a little bit on visa requirements.

I don't know - but I always figured that if I wanted to retire abroad I'd already have a general idea where I would want to retire to. I would not need information on geography and currencies. What I'd rather want to know is: What implications does retiring abroad have on my U.S. retirement pays, taxes, medical insurance, to name just a few. How to best move my stuff, and what to look out for. Etc. Etc. Etc.

The Grown-Up's Guide to Retiring Abroad is nothing more than a very, very generalized travel guide with a few sentences in every country chapter referring to the retirement aspects of it all.

If you are still utterly clueless as to where you would like to retire to - Belize or the Czech Republic, Germany or Thailand, Greece or Honduras - then by all means get this book to get a very short and general overview of these countries, but for people who already know which country they'd prefer this book is really not too informative because they will probably know most of the information in here - from their travel guide books.

good starting place for future retirees.......2002-01-30

The author chose a sampling of places and categorized them nicely (eg English speaking, budget, etc). There's a list of contacts for further research for each place. I thought it raised some thoughtful general concerns especially the economic situations of the places and what your day would be like there. It also has helpful facts such as average housing prices and annual expenditures estimates. The book was a good starting point for someone like me who is just starting to think about retirement places.

Though he lived to be 64, it's always seemed that dancer-choreographer José Limón (1908-1972) was snatched from this earth prematurely. For that reason, the appearance of Limón's unfinished biography--which has the same assured, sensitive quality as his dances--is such a treasure.

Limón's writings here tell of his childhood and early adult years. Born in Culiacán, Mexico, the eldest of 12 children, Limón showed great talent as a visual artist from early on. His family moved to the U.S. when he was 7 (first to Arizona, then California), where he attended Catholic school and continued his drawing and painting. It was not until the late '20s, when he moved to New York City to study art, that Limón saw his first dance concert and changed course entirely. "I knew with shocking suddenness that until then I had not been alive or, rather, that I had yet to be born," he writes. With a level of detail that belies his sense of miraculous discovery, he chronicles his work with and appreciation of such 20th-century choreographic masters as Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman, Martha Graham, and George Balanchine. The memoir ends just as Limón has formed his own company.

You couldn't ask for better stewardship for these papers, which had been viewable until now only at the dance collection of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. I've never heard of this author, but I'm so glad I tried out his book anyway. I love Elisha, and Greg Haslam brings out some really thought-provoking and always inspirational teachings on his life. The book is a practical look at how Christians should minister to the world, and his writing style is so lively, vivid and quotable. Definitely not dry anaylsis but passionate lessons for living the faith. I highly recommend it and plan on re-reading it over and over and keeping it on my special shelf of my favorite spiritual books.
