Many people know something about her husband, Robert E. Lee; perhaps even more know her great-grandfather, George Washington; some have even visited her family estate. But few people today know much about Mary Custis Lee-wife, mother, daughter, and the Lady of Arlington, Virginia. Chronically ill and often in excruciating pain, Mary trusted God as she raised her seven children, faithfully witnessing to her husband for years before his conversion and, later, his confirmation in the Anglican Church. During the Civil War, she was instrumental in negotiating the release of her family from house arrest and her son from a prisoner-of-war camp. Later, she retained her dignity and faith throughout a fruitless, heartbreaking attempt to win compensation for the confiscation of her home and valuables. THE BOOK WAS VERY WELL WRITTEN.MADE ME THINK I WAS LIVING IN THE TIME. I COULD NOT LAY THE BOOK DOWN,I EVEN GOT ON THE ARLINGTON SITE AND LOOKED AT SOME GREAT PICTURES OF ARLINGTON AS I WAS READING THE BOOK AND THIS MADE THE BOOK ALL THE MORE INTERESTING. GREAT AUTHOR.

What did he ever see in her?.......2006-11-05

I read this book in three days as it was very well written, but did not, in my opinion give a very favorable view of Mary Lee. It portrayed her as self-centered, and like her father, more obsessed with the Washington connection than with the Lee connection. It pictures him as madly in love with her, I just cannot figure out why? I think it is very telling that none of their daughters chose to marry. Already a huge fan of his, the book only reinforced my good opinion of him.

Facinating insight - well written.......2006-08-27

This books give the reader a facinating insight into a woman who is too often over looked in history. It is the story of a woman, who's family members were on the front lines of America's early history, and who was a loving and supportive wife to the famous Robert E. Lee. History is full of stories of his life, especially during the Civil War, but the reader of this book will find that his wife was courageous in her own right, and worthy of historical note.
After reading this wonderful book, I found two other books which were just and wonderful and insightful about the Lee Family. They were "Growing up in the 1850's", the jouranl of Agnes Lee, and "The Lee Girls".

Interesting and informative.......2006-04-18

I always find it interesting to read about famous people's lives, but especially about the people who have been behind the scenes so to speak and little is told about them. That is why I found this book so interesting. Robert E. Lee is well known as the civil war general who surrendered and the war ended, of course, but to read more about his wife and get an insight to his family life made it hard to put the book down. There are some basic history rehashed somewhat in this book, but over all I found the book very personable and engaging in letting me know something about this woman whom I had never really heard of before. It also will show readers that no matter how famous a person may be, all people have their troubles and sorrows- and a lot of how life turns out to affect you depends on your reaction to what has happened in one's life. If you enjoy anything about the Civil War, this book would be a definite must !

Wonderful biography of a remarkable woman.......2004-11-05

Mrs. Mary Custis Lee of all people seemed to symbolize the tragedy of the Lost Cause. Born to wealth and privilege, the daughter of George Washington's adopted son (and Martha's grandson), she could have married any young man, but instead chose soldier Robert Edward Lee. She was to follow him through war and peace, the births of seven children, a debilitating illness and the loss of her beloved home. Through all, she maintained grace and dignity and personified the gracious Southern lady. Highly recommend.

Enjoy the story of Mary Custis Lee and her famous husband.......2004-11-30

This is an interesting biography of Mary Custis who lived in and inherited the estate that is now the site of Arlington Cemetery. She fell in love with and married Robert E. Lee, a distant cousin. The book follows their story as Robert earned his reputation in the American military and later became internationally famous as a great general in the Confederate Army. Mary suffered personal losses as a result of his decision to join the Confederate cause, including having to abandon forever her family's mansion.

Harnett Kane wrote many books about the Old South; this is the third one that I've read. It is suitable for high school students and adult readers alike. There's good information on the Lee family and of course on the American Civil War. I was impressed by Robert E. Lee's accomplishments before the Civil War, particularly his engineering achievements in St. Louis.

The true love story of a remarkable couple, this book reads like a novel while providing historical background and narrative.

Living with the Lee Family.......2001-04-02

Once you begin reading this book, you feel as if you are living with the Lee family. Harnett Kane as an uncanny ability to be able to make you part of history. The book is written from the perspective of before the War Between the States, during and after. What a wonderful way to get a true, historical perspective of life in the South, and the way it truly was in the Lee Family. I am a cousin of Robert E. Lee, so it was a wonderful experience to spend time with part of my family from the past!

Pretty good book.......2001-06-06

This book has some good information for anyone considering purchasing a home in France. It's aimed more towards a U.K. citizen, versus a U.S. citizen, but I still found it helpful. Some of the info. applies only to purchases of 'flats' (apartments) and not houses, but he doesn't tell you that. I found out after asking for some of the documentation he mentions. I would recommend the book to anyone considering the purchase of a French property -- get it early so you do it right!

...if you're thinking about buying property in France. Hampshire is totally on target. I read his book before going through the buying process, and couldn't believe how perfectly his advice dovetailed with my actual experience.

We JUST (September '99) bought an apartment in Paris, using this book as a daily reference. It helped us immensely, giving us confidence in many procedures from looking for a place initially to the closing, including geat information on insurance and utilities. Definitely a great source!

This is a great book.......2003-10-30

This book is the finest ever made of any composer. It is simply a "must-have" for anyone interested in Liszt, the piano, and classical music. All the photographs, illustrations and intriguing text provided by Ernst Burger make this book a fantastic journey through the life of the great Franz Liszt and offers good insight into his world and of many of his contemporaries.
Knowing this book has been out of print for several years, I am glad to have obtained a copy.

At a mere four months wait for my copy, I feel lucky. ( I demand a reprint! ) It is everything James Harrington has it written out to be. Simply and utterly impressive. No finer treatment of any person of note, could be granted than at the hands of author Ernst Burger. He writes, "Liszt was rare among musicians in that he was receptive to every aspect of art..." It is readily apparent the same could be said of Burger as well. His grasp of the art and the physical world of Liszt's time, as well as a profound appreciation of the music, make this presentation truly in depth and a sheer pleasure to study.

Worth waiting for . . ........2000-07-19

It took Amazon.com's Out of Print service over a year to find me a copy of this fabulous out of print book. It was in perfect condition and over 30% less than the original list price. The format of this book finds the year in Liszt's life at the top of every page. At the beginning of each new year the left most column has notable events in Liszt's life while the facing page, right most column has a list of works composed. In the middle are pictures, reprints of old scores, letters, articles, programs, drawnings, etc. all cross-referenced and footnoted. Meticulous scholarship and a myriad of fascinating items make this book indispensible to anyone interested in Liszt or his times.

A clarification by the author's son.......1998-11-07

This book shows up here at Amazon.com as "out-of-print": however, clicking on the name "Jim Whitewolf" will quickly show you that the reprint of the book is still available, with only the title slightly changed, from "Jim Whitewolf: The Life of a Kiowa Apache Indian", to "The Autobiography of a Kiowa Apache Indian." No other changes have been made, from one version to the next, but you DO have the option to order the original, out-of-print, edition.

It is somewhat confusing to classify Jim Whitewolf as the author of this book. The book is an ethnographic biography of a Kiowa Apache Indian (who is given the pseudonym Jim Whitewolf out of respect for Kiowa Apache traditions), and was researched and written in the late 1940's and early '50s by my father, the late Charles Brant. It was first published in 1972, and is primarily of interest to ethnographers and anthropologists, but is certainly a worthwhile read for anyone with an interest in First Nations issues. At the time of my father's fieldwork in Oklahoma, profound changes were occuring to the Kiowa Apache as a result of interaction with white culture, as well as assimilation into both the Kiowa and Apache nations.
