I Liked the Gardening Analogy.......2006-05-07

This is a slim, fast and un-intimidating read on personal finance for those socially and ecologically-minded souls who find themselves mystified and befuddled by all sorts of money issues. Although I did not agree with everything the author said, some of the more interesting insights I gleaned from this book are the following:

1) Money is a means and an enabler; it is not an end in and of itself.

2) Having money creates options; not having money creates constraints and limitations- indeed, not having money creates headaches and considerable heartache (and more than a few bleeding ulcers!)

3) Your past financial mis-deeds place limitations on you now and in the future. Only until you resolve your past mis-deeds can you focus on the future.

4) It is really not how much you earn, but what you get to keep that matters most. Trying to beat the tax man is a losing game.

These and other gems get the reader in the proper frame of mind to provide for his or her financial future by investing. Although I do not agree with his stance on socially responsible investing (after all, we invest in order to earn a satisfactory return on our hard won funds, and it is this return that we can put to good use, in a socially responsible way if we like), I commend the author's effort to reach out and get more individuals, especially those eco-hip, ecologically aware, and socially idealistic individuals, to at least consider the possibility of providing for their own financial future.

Great - and humorous - advice.......2001-07-31

Tending Your Money Garden is perfect for anyone who gets stressed out at the thought of money. This is the first finance book I've found that's actually entertaining. Tending Your Money Garden addresses all sorts of finance quandries - from balancing a checkbook, to getting out of debt, to preparing taxes. Bob Dreizler delivers good, practical and humorous advice for beginners and seasoned investors alike. What's best about Tending Your Money Garden is that Dreizler uses personal anecdotes and stories to support the facts. For anyone who thinks that financial advice has to be dull and boring, read Tending Your Money Garden. On top of all of the great advice in the book, there's also a section about socially-conscious investing, which is really interesting. Tending Your Money Garden is fantastic -- perfect for anyone who wants to learn, or just learn more, about finance.

Too many, too little.......1998-07-15

This is a very disappointing book. It tries to cover a very broad and very disconnected area of the United States. There are nine states crammed into its pages and each state hardly gets any coverage. A lot of great attractions, restaurants and lodgings are missed as this book tries to cover from Oregon to Iowa! In order to be a helpful travel guide, it should be split into a least two volumes. As it is right now, it is not worth the money.

I purchased this book at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. and have relished the quotes and tidbits from Lincoln's life. Lincoln's attitude on everything from the importance of study, communication, focus, diligence, hard work, compassion, & justice ought to be read, remembered, and practiced. I marked many of the pages from this book and will refer to it frequently!

LIncolns attitude key to his success.......2003-03-30

It's clear to the readers of this book that Lincolns difficult time in his early years provided him with his remarkable attitude to forge the ideas in this book. His thinking is clear and relevant and timely. It is helpful for the reader to keep in mind Lincoln probably refered to these pages many times throughout his life to remind himself of the correct choices to make. I think this book belongs in everyones library!

Moving compilation of quotes.......2002-04-28

Heard the taped version of Gene Griessman's THE WORDS
LINCOLN LIVED BY . . . this is a short but moving
compilation of quotations, followed by insightful commentary
that provides historical context.

In some respects, I wish I had read this . . . there was
much that I wish I could have revisited . . . as it was, I
kept pulling off the side of the road to jot down such
items as the following (so as to be able to share it):

[on diligence] "Half finished work generally proves to be
work lost." No other principle comes closer to accounting
for success than diligence.

[on tenacity] "I expect to maintain this contest until
successful or until I die or am conquered or until my term
expires or until Congress or the country removes me." Lincoln
believed that sticking to a decision once made would
strengthen the individual.

[on conviction] "The world shall know that I will keep my
word to friends and enemies come what will."

[on friendship] "The better part of one's life comes out of
friendships." Lincoln knew how to make and keep them.
He enjoyed companionship and knew how to attract
people.

A Year's Worth of Inspiration..........1999-01-17

There have been a small number of books published which attempt to collect in dictionary form the more noted words and remarks of Abraham Lincoln. Archer H. Shaw did "The Lincoln Encyclopedia" in 1950; Caroline Thomas Harnsberger collected "The Lincoln Treasury" in 1950; Ralph B. Winn wrote "A Concise Lincoln Dictionary" in 1959; Fred A. Kerner assembled "A Treasury of Lincoln Quotations" in 1965, reprinted in 1996; and Gabor S. Boritt published "Of the People, By the People, For the People" in 1996.

All of those volumes are most helpful in locating a Lincoln quotation, and Don E. and Virginia Fehrenbacher have compiled "The Recollected Words of Abraham Lincoln" (1996). Of course, this latter study selects the more important spoken words of Lincoln as recalled by listeners who heard them.

However, Gene Griessman has put together an entirely different publication. Although it often quotes Lincoln, the theme is actually to inspire and motivate its readers to make an attempt to imitate the immortal Sixteenth President. In this, Prof. Griessman has done a superb job. His book is outstanding. Furthermore, he has identified the sources for the quotes utilized in each small chapter. All fifty-two units are named after one of Lincoln's noteworthy traits, such as "Determination," "Courage," "Honesty," etc. Not only does Griessman give us Lincoln quotes, but he also weaves each one into a little jewel of an essay on that particular subject. If a reader peruses a chapter a week, he or she will have a year's worth of inspiration.

In addition, this small volume contains "Biographical Notes" on the main figures cited and also a Bibliography of the sources quoted. Dr. Griessman has utilized his background in speaking and teaching the fine art of motivation to write this particular book. He also impersonates Abraham Lincoln for large audiences and has authored numerous books and articles.

In this entire treatise, this reviewer noted only one very minor error. On page 128, it is set down that Thomas Lincoln was born in either 1776 or 1778. There certainly is no doubt about the date of Thomas's natal day. Abraham Lincoln wrote down in his Father's own Bible the statement that Thomas was born January 6, 1778. (See Basler, Ed., "The Collected Works", II, 94. This fact is most difficult to discover since the index to "The Collected Works" does not carry this reference under the title "Bibles.")

Must reading for aging boomers.......2001-08-28

If you have ever dealt with parents who have waited too long to plan for aging, this book provides very thought provoking information that all baby-boomers need to heed. A realistic vision of aging can help one transition from what may seem like eternal youth to the inevitable stages of decreasing energy and increasing frailty. Proper planning- both financially and mentally - are covered by the authors. Taking the right mental attitude into the years after 55 may be the key to successfully aging. I have recommended this book to all my friends and consider it one of the most important I have read this year.

THE BEST resource for first-time buyers (and seasoned ones)!.......1997-12-03

I bought this book when I was considering buying my first home. Not only did we find a home in the perfect neighborhood within our price range for sale by owner, but I wrote our sales agreement, coordinated all of the inspections, lawyers, title search and insurance, and more. Whether you have your own agent or represent yourself, this book is an excellent way to learn everything you need to know (really!) about buying a home. It speaks to all kinds of audiences, old and young, residents or investors, rich and poor, good credit and bad. It's very easy to understand and is outlined in a step-by-step format that's very easy to follow. All my friends think I'm an expert, but really my first answer whenever they ask me to tell them something about buying a home is, "You've got to get this book." In fact, I'm on the site today ordering a copy for a friend. By the way, Garrison also wrote an equally excellent book on selling your own home in 90 days. It works, it's important stuff to know, it's all written in a way you are sure to understand, and you'll actually enjoy it!

What is WRONG with you people?.......2007-07-20

Anyone who buys into Nugent's "patriot" hype is somehow totally misinformed. He was a well-known draft dodger back in the Vietnam era. All of his flag-waving is nothing but a publicity stunt. As for his big talk about values, he has the morals of an alleycat.

Why is it that the radical right-wing these days has to promote chickenhawks and hypocrites as their spokesmen?

Why do so many otherwise fully functioning, well-meaning Americans buy into their bull?

If you want to promote this clown's masquerade as an uberpatriot, then buy this book. If you're truly concerned about the future of our country, then speak out against these merchants of intolerance. America works best when we work together. These guys who try to turn us against one another are doing a lot more harm than good. They appeal to your base emotions, without providing any solutions. Don't be sucked in.

Why so many ratings having NOTHING to do with the book?.......2007-07-13

Read the book, rate the book...it's really simple.

While it's really a 4 star book (some of the hunting stories do drag on a bit), I gave it five to help balance the oddly hateful reviews.

It's a book on Ted's take on politics, life and hunting told in Ted's usual style. If you like that sorta thing, you will like this book. If you don't like Ted, why not do something productive and read (and review) something you do like?

Nugent is no hero.......2007-06-24

I enjoy hunting.

I've voted Republican almost exclusively.

Ted Nugent is no hero. If you knew the revolting lengths he went to in order to avoid military service, you'd agree.

Ted Nugent is no moral role model. If you knew about his exploits with underage girls, you'd agree.

What we have here is an aging minor rock n' roll personality whose career was coming to an end by the early 90's. He merely reinvented himself to take advantage of the rising right-wing tide that also sees other military service avoiders like Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, and Michael Weiner-Savage as pillars of virtue and wise political sages.

Please, people...

Get a clue.

Those of us who actually did serve in the military see these men for the jokers they truly are. If the radical right wing can find no better spokesmen than these, then it must be a strong comment on the defects in their message.

Nug rules!.......2007-04-10

Ted Nugent is AWESOME and an excellent role model. I bought this book for my husband, a Nugent fan, avid hunter and sportsman and collector of guns and he convinced me to read it, too. I learned a lot and am happy that I read it!

An Ungodly Book !.......2006-12-25

What type of God would enjoy people using lethal firearms to kill his animal creation. Ted Nugent is the polar opposite of Mahatma Gandhi, a truly Godl'y man.
