Expertly translated from the original Dutch by Debra F. A powerful tribute to Anne as a person, remembering her for who she was and the good times spent together, rather than simply dwelling upon her suffering and pain, My Friend Anne Frank is a deeply emotional and moving testimony of a remarkable young life and a very special friendship.

Not To Be Missed.......2002-05-10

This is an extraordinary little book. Anyone with an interest in Anne Frank would be foolish not to read this. Written by a real friend of Anne's (who is referred to in the diary as "Jopie"), we are offered something in this book that cannot be underestimated--a different point of view on some of the experiences Anne describes by someone who really experienced them with her. Quotes from the diary are expanded upon and explained and some minor mysteries are resolved by the woman who, as a girl, was with Anne when these things happened.

Some readers might be disappointed that this book is so brief. I, on the other hand, was sympathetic to Van Maarsen's shyness, desire for privacy and reticence to speak so as not to appear as someone taking advantage of Anne's fame. In fact, I think this makes her book even more compelling. Van Maarsen speaks strictly to things she knows and experiences. She does not try to pad the book with her own personal details and agenda. She seems to have written this book for us--the people interested in knowing more about Anne--and not for herself.

As the years pass, there is the growing risk that Anne will become so sainted as to go beyond reality. Additionally, the readers of the diary often forget that we are hearing a story entirely from the perspective of a young girl. This does not diminish Anne's achievement but I think it is important to keep in mind that Anne was a real person with faults as well as great talent. Plaster saints do not inspire as well as true human beings in whom we can find a reflection of ourselves. Van Maarsen reminds us of Anne's humanity by giving us a different point of view of Anne's experiences. It is an invaluable resource.

A UNIQUE VIEW FROM A DEAR CHILDHOOD FRIEND.......2001-08-29

May 26,2001:

If you love the Diary of Anne Frank, you will want to have this book. It raises intriguing questions such as if you had been Anne's friend, would you now want to stay out of the limelight? How would you like it if people only wanted to know you because you were her friend? That it took the author ("Jopie" in the Diary) so long to write this (published in Dutch, 1990), is an indication of the painful struggles she has had with these and related issues. The spirit of candor in the Diary is present in this book also. So much so that ironically, some readers will be disappointed in the ending. We want Anne's friend to carry the torch of her legacy. That our image of how she does this may differ from the author's--hopefully will not lessen our ability to appreciate the author for sharing her unique experiences.

Update of August 28, 2001:

After seeing this review, the author wrote to me that she continues public speaking. Examples of such speeches are described in fascinating detail in the book. As her note to me eloquently stated:

"Anne's diary conveys a very strong message, a message against discrimination and prejudice. By telling about my friendship with Anne and the circumstances during the war, I can give authenticity to her story. So, after having hesitated for years, I now 'carry the torch of Anne's legacy.' I speak for my friend, who cannot speak any more, and I feel quite satisfied to do so."

Some might wonder how or why the author could "give authenticity to Anne's story" which speaks so directly to their heart. It is apparent that this comment is meant for people who have denied Anne wrote the Diary. The book explains that the author provided samples of Anne's handwriting to the Dutch Institute For War Documentation after the war. This was used to confirm the Diary was written by Anne. Too, there are incidents described in the Diary that only Anne and the author witnessed. In Anne's 1942 poem to the author, which contained a personal twist to a common verse, she wrote:

"Dear Jackie,

Always show your sunny side

And be a nice girl at school

Remain my dearest little friend

And everyone will love you.

In remembrance of your friend,

Anne Frank

The last two lines of this verse have proven prophetic. It is clear that Anne would love her dear Jackie even more for having written this book and speaking where Anne's voice trails into silence. The world is indeed fortunate that Anne continues to have such a lovely friend.

A valuable glimpse at 19th century African American life.......2000-11-18

I first encountered Charlotte Forten Grimke as an adult, when I read the hefty (more than 600 pages) edition of her journals published as part of the Schomburg Library of 19th Century Black Women Writers. I was captivated by her inquisitive mind and vivacious spirit, which clearly came through in her prose.

"A Free Black Girl Before the Civil War" is a selection from the journals of the young Charlotte Forten (Grimke was her married name), all written in 1854. These writings offer a fascinating glimpse into the life of an educated free black girl during the era of slavery. We learn about Charlotte's love for nature, her participation in abolitionist activities, her admiration for the pioneering African American poet Phillis Wheatley, and other topics. Editor Christy Steele and company have provided a rich and colorful assortment of study aids: photographs and illustrations from Charlotte's era, a map of the "Underground Railroad," a timeline, and other resources. At 32 pages, the book is a lot less intimidating than the adult version which I first read!

The book also encourages its young readers to start their own diaries, and offers some tips. A list of relevant Internet sites further adds to the interactive nature of the book. This is an outstanding book for younger readers. Adults who also enjoy it would be wise to seek out the Schomburg Library edition of Charlotte's journals, edited by Brenda Stevenson. Both versions of these historic documents are excellent contributions to the field of African American studies.

I respectfully disagree with the previous reviewer. This is a fascinating volume written with wit and style and filled with useful information. It's a volume I constantly refer to and would unreservedly recommend for any person interested in the history of the Soviet Union.

Epic Catastrophe.......2003-09-23

Having intensely reviled McCauley's "Bandits, Gangsters and the Mafia: Russia, the Baltic States and the CIS Since 1991," I looked for other books by him and thought he must have written SOME good things. I was wrong.

In this loosely organised collection of miniature biographies, McCauley takes every opportunity to force home his sour prejudice against Russians. To those who use this for reference material, I would strongly advise caution into believing the more emotive terminology selected by McCauley. This publication is vast with much information, but about as objective as a North Korean press release. Use other books to achieve some degree of balance.

This author knows what makes someone buy a house. Every page has one or more great ideas about how to make your home more appealing. We thought of our house as a little odd, not quite as good as others. With his tips it became so attractive to buyers that the first one bought it and the next three moaned sorrowfully when they found it had already sold.

One of the author's tips is that people don't buy rooms and appliances, they buy something that rings a deep emotional bell. He talks about how to find that bell for your house, and how to ring it for the prospective buyer.

We loved our house because we set it up for quality time with our kids. We decided to ring that bell. We took out a ratty breakfast bar from the kitchen and replaced it with an old oak table and chairs. The house had an add-on bedroom you could only get to through another bedroom. We changed the middle room into a library with bookshelves filled with childrens books. Instead of tearing down the treehouse we spruced it up. We put wooden toys on the workbench in the shed. Everything said, "quality time with the kids." It worked. This is just one of the great tips. There are so many more we couldn't begin to use them all.

Half Japanese Girls, Megalomania And Other Fetishes.......2005-11-15

Whether it be his fetish for half-Japanese girls, his monkish vows of silence, abstinence and segregration or his self-described "socially retarded" ways, there's no doubting Weezer mainman Rivers Cuomo is a strange character. Born to a soccer-mad father and Buddhist mother who almost named him Apple, perhaps it was his rearing in a hippy commune where music and childhood games were contraband that ensured Rivers grew to be so odd. What this book ensures is that his musical legacy (incredibly prolific despite only five official studio albums in over a decade), devout fanbase and impact on American rock isn't overshadowed by his megalomania and mystery. Strong on details of Weezer's unreleased mountain of songs and unusual scraps such as Rivers' befriending Will Ferrell, writing songs for Enrique Iglesias and loving nu-metal cocks such as Limp Bizkit and Crazy Town, Rivers' Edge is a strong Weezer biography only let down by a dribbling finale that closes before the release of 2005's Make Believe.

More a patchwork than a real bio.......2005-05-12

When I first heard of a Weezer biography, I was really stoked, 'cause clearly there is a lot of interesting stuff to be told about that band. But I was a bit deceived by that biography. It's kind of poorly written, with grammar mistakes and word repetitions at a couple of places. The information contained in the book is accurate and complete, but the author's way of writing is not fluent at all, which makes the reading a little less enjoyable. Hardcore Weezer fans should read it though, because there is a lot of information in there, but it's mostly about Rivers Cuomo's behaviour with the others. The book could have been called "Rivers'trial". It's more a patchwork of quotes than a real biography, in the end, but there is some very funny and interesting parts. Only for diehard fans.

Black Elk Lives: Conversations With The Black Elk Family is an intimate set of interviews with the family and descendants of Nicholas Black Elk collected and edited by Hilda Niehardt and Lori Utecht. The intent of the collection is to present more of the perspectives and outlooks of the family members. Even more important, Black Elk Lives is a celebration of the strength and resilience of the human spirit, and the questioned survival of a way of life and thought that is Lakota in origin. Beginning with a transcription of a 1969 talk at Pine Ridge Boarding School by Benjamin Black Elk, the son and interpreter of Nicholas Black Elk as well as father and grandfather of other contributors, Black Elk Lives contains chapters on family memories, the changing roles of men and women, reclaiming the legacy (of Black Elk), the use and misuse of Lakota religion, fighting in Vietnam (Clifton DeSersa interview), working, Lakota legends, stories and games, grandfather's healing, and caring for grandfather (Black Elk).

Each chapter is actual interview dialogue, which allows the Black Elks to speak in their own chosen words. Because of this, and because of the relationship between the Black Elks and the interviewer(s), the reader has a sense of being told from the heart the feelings and experiences of these representatives of the Black Elk family. Sometimes the outlook is distinctly bleak and sad. Sometimes it seems hopeful. Other times, the speaker is making corrections, often to the assumptions or misunderstandings of the interpretations of "Black Elk Speaks" and other matters of Lakota vision.

Black Elk Lives is invaluable because of just that opportunity to inform the nonnative population. An example of this is at the end of the chapter titled "The Use and Misuse of Lakota Religion." Aaron DeSersa Jr. says:"It's just like my great-grandpa's book: People are walking on this road and some go off the road. As I've said, my great-grandpa's vision wasn't a spiritual vision. It was the future of our people, the Lakota people. Some people can't look at it that way - they want it to be spiritual and have a deep meaning. But what it is, when you look at it and interpret it, is what our people are going through in this life and in the future, and how they're going to be put back on that good road - bringing back the old ways and ceremonies and understanding them(p.103)."

The chapters of interviews and dialogue are enriched by several pages of black and white photos of the family members in several different decades. The cover jacket photograph of Nicholas Black Elk on Cuny Table (1931) is magnificent and unforgettable. Another helpful detail is the Black Elk family tree described on page 151. It is good to see the generations descent into the present. Perhaps there was not space for the birth dates of the present generation . It is still helpful to see the names of all the family members and to trace their lineage.

Black Elk Lives is a vibrant expression of the inheritors of the vision of "Black Elk Speaks". Now it is to unfold what will happen if people listen. Black Elk Lives will help to ensure that not only will they listen, perhaps also they will begin to hear and understand.
