Book Description

The Finance Doctor is a how-to book on Personal Finance, yet you will think you are reading a novel. Dr. Dink recognizes that people are starving for this information, but can't seem to get past all the financial mumbo jumbo. Therefore, he created a book in which all the fundamentals are woven into a page-turning story.

The narrative format allows you to get to know Dr. Dink and then watch him go to work on a couple that is near financial ruin. After learning that Cindy and Scott are in serious credit card debt and don't have any financial goals, Dr. Dink puts together a prescription that not only erases their credit card debt, but also puts them on track to owning a home and building both an education and retirement fund.

If you have a net worth of over $1 million, don't bother reading this book. If, however, you are looking for ways to improve the quality of your life, dig out of credit card debt, own a home, and let your dreams--and not your bills--dictate how you live your life, The Finance Doctor is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Dink has found the cure for my financial ills!.......2001-03-08

A friend of mine gave this book to me while I was in the hospital recovering from a severe case of Crone's disease. Prior to reading Dr. Dink's excellent financial advice, my idea of a sound money decision was betting it all on black at the Roulette table! He really broke it down for me in a way I could understand. Thanks, guys.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God for Dr. Dink!!!.......2001-02-15

For years I have struggled by living month to month beyond my means. I felt helpless and out of control. Dr. Dink explained it in the most simpliest of terms. Just a little work made the most difference. I recommend this to anyone who wants to take control of their finances and start living their dreams!

5 out of 5 stars Appealing, Homespun Advice for Improving Household Finances.......2000-12-26

This book comes across like a cross between Will Rogers and Tony Robbins in helping you take charge of your financial life. It has a personal, in-touch feel that will make thinking about your finances more interesting and comfortable . . . even if you have some serious issues. The advice is consistent with the most advanced techniques, but presented in a way that is easy to absorb and apply. This book can be effectively used by most middle income households headed by someone with at least two years of high school education. The typical family using this approach should improve net worth by many hundreds of thousands of dollars over the next three decades. Buy it, read it, and live it!

This book would be fun to read, even if you weren't interested in household finances. The writing and the slant are very appealing.

Dr. Dink is a charming fellow. He admits all of his own weaknesses and mistakes in a totally disarming way. While many "experts" on personal finances try to elevate the subject, the effect is to make people feel embarrassed by their mistakes. Dr. Dink has a fundamental respect for others and for himself that make you feel right at home.

Dr. Dink, by comparison to the media stars you see on television every day telling you what to do financially, comes down to your level (wherever that may be) with sympathy and understanding, points out that you are okay and can succeed, and helps you to see your own way to accomplishing what you want.

Three aspects of the book are particularly commendable:

1) The decision process of Q-Q-Kachoo. The book describes the process far better than I can here in a few words. The essence is to use three perspectives simultaneously: total cost carefully quantified over time; looking at the pros and cons of a decision (a la Ben Franklin); and checking your gut (seeing how you feel about the decision). If all three point in the same direction (positively or negatively), chances are that you have made a good decision. Many very sophisticated decision-making techniques apply these same fundamental concepts, just in more complicated ways. If you are interested in learning more about that subject, see Smart Choices.

2) Creating comfortable ways to draw your attention to the main areas where you can increase your income, reduce your expenses, save and invest money better. This is not rocket science nor brain surgery, but the details can easily get lost . . . and bad decisions follow. Dr. Dink gives you a simple, quick way to spot those opportunities and find your own, pleasant solutions.

3) Providing detailed examples from a variety of perspectives. Many of these will hit home for you. Everyone, for example, will resonate to the idea of paying green cash for things as a way to save money. We all spend less when we have to dole it out, bill by bill, than when we can use a credit card or a check. You don't have to do pay in cash, but you will appreciate the power of the example . . . and perhaps sometimes you will use this approach to your advantage when it makes sense.

As you can see, Dr. Dink's strength is that he has great common sense and a wonderful common touch about human psychology and finances. He doesn't do this kind of work to build himself up ego-wise. He is truly a servant of clients. Very nice, Dr. Dink!

After you have finished applying the lessons of this book to your own finances, I suggest that you become a Dr. Dink, Junior, and share the lessons with someone else you care about. In helping someone else learn these principles, you will reinforce and extend your own learning.

Keep your eye on your financial vital signs, and a long, healthy financial life will follow!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for non-finance people!.......2000-12-10

Finally a book for those of us that don't understand the world of finance! I highly recommend this book and let me tell you why.

This book has some very practical advice about getting out of debt and staying out of debt. The author also provides some insights into investing. What this book has that I have not seen in other finance type books, is the ability to draw in the reader ... you don't feel like you are reading a finance book but rather you feel as if you are having a discussion with a friend, an advisor .... yes, even a teacher. Dr. Dink is indeed a teacher. I felt as if I had sat down with him and he was telling me about the mistakes he's made, the mistakes that are common and then what to do to avoid them. For those of us who have made those mistakes [and there are lots of us] you feel like you're not alone and his advice is easy to follow. Of course, that doesn't mean it's easy to DO what he says ... but it's easy to understand his advice.

Dr. Dink has a conversational way of writing. The reader gets a glimpse of his personal life and how these finance 'lessons' worked for him, his friends and others.

I found that I was able to read this book quickly, and I'm sure will be going back to it for advice. As a business professional, I found the information valuable. I'd recommend it for younger people as well, especially those starting out. It's a great gift for college students in particular.

5 out of 5 stars Witty, practical and persuasive...three cheers for Dr. Dink!.......2000-11-18

Dr. Dink's prescription for financial wellness really hit home...even for a guy with a Masters in Business Administration in Finance. His book would definitely be valuable for someone trying to gain some basic knowledge of financial management. However, what really distinguishes Dr. Dink's book from others is his ability to bring abstract financial concepts down to earth and help us to understand how often our financial situation drives our decision-making regardless of how much money we make. In challenging us to "stop chasing our bills and start chasing our dreams" he reminds us that life is too short to allow credit cards bills to stand in the way of happiness. By setting his financial program within a very practical context, Dr. Dink did a great job of keeping me interested and his witty stories and useful examples were the icing on the cake. For anybody interested in taking back their life from banks and credit cards, Dr Dink has the financial cure for you.

              Product Description

Bertrand du Guesclin (d. 1380) was the most famous French soldier of his generation. He made his name as a guerrilla leader in the Breton War of Succession (1341-64) and, as Constable from 1370-80, played a major role in the recovery of France under Charles V. Captured on at least three occasions, but also victorious in several important battles, his valour and dominant personality allowed him to exercise remarkable influence over fellow soldiers, many of whom loyally served him for many years. He twice led important expeditions to Spain where he was rewarded with lands and titles by the kings of Aragon and Castile. The subject of a contemporary chivalric verse-life that lies at the base of all subsequent biographies, this book brings together for the first time the wealth of archival evidence relating to his outstanding career. It places this on a secure foundation by making available the full range of diplomatic, administrative and financial evidence for his p! ublic and private life found in more than fifty archives in western Europe. It offers a corrective to views on Du Guesclin that have traditionally been derived too exclusively and, often, uncritically from literary sources.

                  Book Description

Through a rich interpretation of the remarkable photographs W. E. B. Du Bois compiled for the American Negro Exhibit at the 1900 Paris Exposition, Shawn Michelle Smith reveals the visual dimension of the color line that Du Bois famously called “the problem of the twentieth century.” Du Bois’s prize-winning exhibit consisted of three albums together containing 363 black-and-white photographs, mostly of middle-class African Americans from Atlanta and other parts of Georgia. Smith provides an extensive analysis of the images, the antiracist message Du Bois conveyed by collecting and displaying them, and their connection to his critical thought. She contends that Du Bois was an early visual theorist of race and racism and demonstrates how such an understanding makes the important concepts he developed—including double consciousness, the color line, the Veil, and second sight—available to visual culture and African American studies scholars in powerful new ways.

Smith reads Du Bois’s photographs in relation to other turn-of-the-century images such as scientific typologies, criminal mugshots, racist caricatures, and lynching photographs. By juxtaposing these images with reproductions from Du Bois’s exhibition archive, Smith shows how Du Bois deliberately challenged racist representations of African Americans. Emphasizing the importance of comparing multiple visual archives, Photography on the Color Line reinvigorates understandings of the stakes of representation and the fundamental connections between race and visual culture in the United States.

As of this writing, "The Visual Documentary," written about legendary British band the Smiths, is tragically out of print. What a castastrophe! I loved reading about Morrissey's semi-pitiful longing for attention, Johnny Marr's guitar influences and the incessant arguments between the band's two visionaries. Author Johnny Rogan is not well-liked by lead singer Morrissey, but Rogan uses that angst to further illustrate his wonderfully poignant portrait of the band. The Smiths and their fans are well-served by this amazing paperback. Read it soon, if you can ever find it!

I loved this book and when I say "loved", I mean LOVED! This book was my first true love affair and a very immoral one, I might add. One can almost experience The Smiths era through the portal of this book and what an era it was. Morrissey is a gorgeous genious. Johnny Marr is simply a wizard. Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce's stories move along well and add to simply marvelous group. Johnny Rogan has done his homework and even though Morrissey insists that he is insane, Mr. Rogan succeeds. I recommend this book to anyone with passion and intelligence. I mean, is there anything otherwise?

Written by Johnny Rogan, the same author of "Morrissey and Marr: The Severed Alliance", but even better than it, "The Smiths: The Visual Documentary" is the ultimate biography of the eighties' rock icons. From Morrissey's Irish roots to the band's world stardom, the book covers all the important, and not so important, moments of The Smiths. Fully illustrated, it features even a copy of Morrissey's family tree and a picture of his birth certificate. Very informative for beginners, essential for die-hard fans: a must.

                          Book Description

In Remembering the Future Luciano Berio shares with us some musical experiences that "invite us to revise or suspend our relation with the past and to rediscover it as part of a future trajectory." His scintillating meditation on music and the ways of experiencing it reflects the composer's profound understanding of the history and contemporary practice of his art.

There is much in this short book that provides insight on Berio's own compositions. Indeed, he comments that writing it "led me to formulate thoughts that might otherwise have remained concealed in the folds of my work." He explores themes such as transcription and translation, poetics and analysis, "open work," and music theater. The reader will also find here numerous insights on the work of other composers, past and present, and much more. A figure of formidable intellect, Berio ranges easily among topics such as Schenkerian analysis, the criticism of Carl Dahlhaus and Theodor Adorno, the works of his friends and sometime collaborators Italo Calvino and Umberto Eco. But Berio carries his learning lightly--his tone is conversational, often playful, punctuated by arresting aphorisms: "The best possible commentary on a symphony is another symphony."

                              Book Description

Rossini's Otello, first performed in 1816, remained an immensely popular opera throughout the nineteenth century and was only eclipsed by Verdi's more Shakespearean version. The critical edition by Michael Collins allows us to rediscover Rossini's Otello as one of the composer's early masterpieces in the tragic genre.

The first of eight serious operas newly-written for the Teatro San Carlo of Naples, Otello reveals Rossini as a composer deeply concerned with both character development and large-scale musical forms. Desdemona's "Willow Song" is a fine example: here not only is variation technique used for dramatic ends, but the song itself forms part of a larger scheme that encompasses the entire third act as a single, unified piece.
Far more than a mere forerunner to Verdi, Rossini's Otello deserves to be known for its own innovative qualities.

                                Book Description

Opera performances are often radically inventive. Composers' revisions, singers' improvisations, and stage directors' re-imaginings continually challenge our visions of canonical works. But do they go far enough? This elegantly written, beautifully concise book, spanning almost the entire history of opera, reexamines attitudes toward some of our best-loved musical works. It looks at opera's history of multiple visions and revisions and asks a simple question: what exactly is opera? Remaking the Song, rich in imaginative answers, considers works by Handel, Mozart, Donizetti, Verdi, Wagner, Puccini, and Berio in order to challenge what many regard as sacroscant: the opera's musical text. Scholarly tradition favors the idea of great operatic texts permanently inscribed in the canon. Roger Parker, considering examples ranging from Cecilia Bartoli's much-criticized insistence on using Mozart's alternative arias in the Marriage of Figaro to Luciano Berio's new ending to Puccini's unfinished Turandot, argues that opera is an inherently mutable form, and that all of us--performers, listeners, scholars--should celebrate operatic revisions as a way of opening works to contemporary needs and new pleasures.

Berio is one of the most widely performed and prodigiously productive of postwar composers. This book is nevertheless the first survey in any language of his work as a whole. Commentators on Berio's work have tended to concentrate on those aspects of his music that have strong extra-musical
associations such as his use of words, sense of theatre, and interest in linguistics. While incorporating all of these, this account seeks to rectify the balance by focusing on the purely musical basis of Berio's work. Its chapters cover such areas as the basis of his musical language, his
involvement with Darmstadt, his work with computers at IRCAM and Tempo Reale, the importance of folk music, and his theatre works.

David Osmond-Smith's guide to the work of Luciano Berio appeared in the Oxford Studies of Composers series in 1991. The work is slim--minus index and appendices it comes to only 118 pages--but tries to cover Berio's entire career up to that point.

One immediately notices that the emphasis here is on the music itself. Biographical material is very limited and brought up only when relevant to the composer's writing, such as his fruitful first marriage to Cathy Berberian. His writing is not handled in strictly chronological order, but the pieces are organized to highlight certain facets of his work. One whole chapter is dedicated to his general conceptions of melody and harmony. The following--for me the most interesting--is on his "commentary techniques", his ability to write new pieces organically growing from the basis of earlier music (sometimes by different composers). A next chapter is dedicated to vocal music. The 1970s, with Berio's return to electronics and maturization of technique, get their own chapter, where "Coro" gets the most substantial treatment. Finally, a last chapter covers Berio's theatre pieces up to the time of writing.

While resources on Berio are woefully few, and I would recommend this book to any fan, the enterprise could have been so much more. Like all Oxford Studies of Composers, this installment is far too brief to give more than a passing glance at most of the composer's work. And since no second edition was prepared after Berio's death, we end things in 1990, before the great triumphs of his late career like the opera "Outis", the Schubert completion "Rendering", and his last work "Stanze". And there's a need for more information on Berio's life itself, such as his involvement in the Italian television series "C'e musica e musica" and what students he inspired. At least Osmond-Smith has also written PLAYING ON WORDS a full-length guide to the wonder that is Berio's "Sinfonia", which fans should also seek out as well.
