I bought this book after visiting Monticello and after reading it I would like to visit Monticello again. This book is very informative on Jefferson's life and the building of Monticello. I would recommend it to anyone interested in Jefferson's life.

Where was the editor?.......2001-04-02

Undoubtedly, Mr. McLaughlin did his homework when he prepared to write this book. I enjoy biographies, am very fascinated by Thomas Jefferson, and was intrigued by the creative approach Mr. McLaughlin took to tell us about Jefferson by using Monticello as a "prism through which [we] view [Jefferson's] life ...".

Unfortunately, the execution didn't meet expectations and this is most noticable in the areas related to the editing. I had difficulty getting past the meandering style. The anecdotes hop around chronologically, and are not tied together well. There is unnecessary repetition within the annecdotes. Even the grammar is off. (I'm not an editor, so as soon as I extend criticism I'm opening myself up as a target, but I recognize a few errors that would've made my high school English teacher cringe. Where one does this professionally, a higher standard is expected.)

Mr. McLaughlin's book could have been tightend up considerably, and structured in a less meandering way for me to have found greater benefit from reading this book.

Novel and Revealing But Incomplete.......2000-09-10

This is a fascinating biography of Thomas Jefferson because, as the author states, "This is not the usual kind of Thomas Jefferson biography; his revolutionary activities, political life, and public career as governor of Virginia, secretary of state, Vice President, and President are only glanced at obliquely. To use an old-fashioned term, it is a domestic life. It attempts to capture a personal and private Jefferson, to detail his relationships with his extended family and friends. The prism through which I view his life is the most most creative artifact of an exceptionally creative man--Monticello."

It goes without saying that Jefferson was an extraordinarily gifted human being, highly creative in many areas, including political thought and architecture. Yet, as this book makes plain, he was also very conventional in many ways. This was particularly true of his attitude towards women: "Like most men of his age, Jefferson believed women's interests were to be confined chiefly to housekeeping and childbearing. ... He also felt strongly that women, plain or fancy, brilliant or dull, had a single purpose in life, marriage and subordination to a husband."

McLaughlin's book shows Jefferson to be an extremely private person, one who for example destroyed all correspondence with his mother and with his wife. Thus any biography of him necessarily requires a great deal of interpretation to fill in the gaps. Although McLaughlin does an admirable job of doing so, his understanding may nevertheless be incomplete. He states, "If there is an identity theme to Jefferson's personality ... it is contained in the Head-Heart letter [to Maria Cosway]. Such a theme might be stated this way: the need for a tight rational control over life's exigencies must be balanced by an ability to feel and express love. It was only within the framework of family relationships--his wife, daughters, and grandchildren--that Jefferson was able to strike this balance." What goes unexamined is Jefferson's relationship with Sally Hemings--was this love? If so, what is is about Jefferson that allowed him to have lasting love only with a much younger woman of color who was also his slave? The record of Jefferson's relationship with Hemings is not revealed in Monticello, and so remains out of McLaughlin's reach. Nevertheless, McLauglin sheds a great deal of light on a most mysterious man.

Read and then Visit Monticello.......2000-08-29

Reading this book before a recent visit to Monticello tremendously enhanced the experience. The book provides so much detail on the design and construction of this beautiful home that you almost feel as if you have been there. A wonderful combination of biography and architectural writing. Highly recommended.

Improvements range from simply cleaning out the refrigerator, to building a deck! The author includes a discussion on the sales value of improvements. And yes, the book DOES offer strategic hints for a successful showing. Ideas that cost nothing: furniture placement, mood enhancement, etc. A very helpful book of improvement ideas, even if you're not selling your home!

Not what I expected.......2000-12-04

While this book provides helpful ideas about projects, I expected and wanted a book that gave hints on preparing your house for sale without spending money. All ideas are in the $100 and up range and are actual construction or other projects. What I was looking for were hints such as: "To make your closet look bigger, do ____, ____ and ____" or "to make your house warm and inviting, light some candles and "brew" cinnamon on the stove when you are showing it"

The book provided many easy and affordable projects to increase the value of our house and sell our house quickly. My wife and I did most of the projects ourselves, or with a little help from friends. Goddess of Light was a wonderful story of the life of Loie Fuller, an oft-overlooked but important innovator of lighting and other theatrical effects with great influence in the world of dance. Loie was not only a movement artist and an inventor but a businesswoman, who promoted other artists (i.e. Rodin) in addition to herself.

Loie was successful because she was experimental, resourceful, and persistent. As this book describes in detail events in all areas of her life, we can come to appreciate this woman who capitalized on her ideas and opportunities, to know her personal pathos as well as her enthusiasm for her art. JUST AMAZING. This book is a first-hand account of my grandfather's grandfather's experiences in the Civil War. Byron Abernethy, my grandfather, took Elisha's writings and edited them for publishing. While I am a bit biased because this is part of my family history, I can guarantee you it is quite an interesting read to see how a high-school age boy reacted to war. At times lighthearted, but never treating the subject matter lightly, it is an engrossing, eye-opening read. I am so grateful he left his memories to share with us all. -His great great grandchild

good if first-person accounts are what you're after.......1998-12-27

I unwrapped and read this book on Christmas Day, so you can see it's a quick read. It reads like a conversation, since that's what it is, a transcribed chronology of this soldier's memory of his time in the union army. I wish he had written the book earlier in his life ( he waited something like 62 years) because he might have added different details and been more reflective on certain things. But as it is, his recollections give you a way to view the war first-hand. And, since none of us can really go back to 1862 ourselves, these accounts are the best way to do it. Stockwell's book does a great job of clarifying what a civil war soldier's number one concern was - getting something to eat. A large part of his remembering of the war is the continual search for food. The book really brings this home. As you read certain passages you can get a very clear picture in your mind just how hard of a life this soldierin' actually was. The book also gives a good account of how casually death came to some soldiers. They are killed when they are eating, standing in line, etc. by stray bullets. And Stockwell is a witness and his descriptions of these scenes bring home the absurd horror of war. If the book has a failing it is that it is not in 7 volumes. That way, when you finish this first part so quickly, there would be six more to read. So, quick read or not, Rest in peace, old soldier. I enjoyed your adventure.

Good for Usher Fans.......2000-08-16

Excellent for Usher fans although some of the pictures and information may be repetetive.

On the other hand, this book is a small handy guide with all the facts on Usher up to 1998. It does not include his recent films such as Facade or Light it Up but it does tell you what soundtracks Usher is on.

There are also some exclusive sexy photos of him including 1 with only his boxers on. Yum!

I recommend you go to your local book store to look through it before buying though.

When I first found out the book was on sale, I knew it would be mine. Just looking at the front cover, it hit me that this book is only about Usher which made me even more excited. I already knew most of the information the book contained about him but there was also some interesting facts that wasn't known. My favorite pages are 19, 20, 24, 33, 40, 54, 86, we'll it's really the whole book ,ha,ha. I love Usher alot, I'm a very big fan of his and if you feel Usher makes you wanna.....you better catch this book. Destiny
