Inside Secrets from a Credit Industry Professional
There are a plethora of books out there promising to show consumers how to repair their credit. There is only one that explains how to establish credit, how to maintain and manage it, and, yes, how to fix it when it's broken The Insider's Guide to Credit Repair.
This much-needed book is current, cohesive, and thorough. It begins with the basics-defining credit, explaining its value to consumers and businesses, and introducing the key parties that keep the process successfully operatingbut then covers more complex topics, including credit laws, credit scoring, credit repair and identity theft. Most noteworthy and helpful are the short quizzes after each chapter, a comprehensive glossary, and a wide variety of sample letters.
The Insider's Guide to Credit Repair is an engaging and thought-provoking discussion of consumer credit from an insider's perspectivethe author is a former instructor for one of the national credit-reporting agencies. The scope of the material is as vast as the author's industry experience, accommodating the beginner trying to establish credit for the first time and more experienced consumers seeking greater knowledge of all aspects of credit.
K.E. Varner is a former instructor of customer-service personnel for Equifax, one of the three major credit-reporting agencies. During his tenure, he functioned as a subject matter expert in a number of high-level business projects, appeared in Federal court to help resolve consumer/credit-reporting agency conflict, and facilitated credit industry information to organizations such as the Atlanta Housing Authority.

Excellent Book.......2007-02-12
I found this book very helpful and honest. It builds upon knowledge that you may already have on credit repair, and is a great resource for someone just tackling their credit.
Very well written and informative.......2006-07-09
I've read many books on credit and this is one of the better ones. I like the fact that you can read what applies to you if you choose. You don't have to read the entire book from front to back but i'd recommend it for complete understanding.
It's very easy to follow, up-to-date, comprehensive. Highlights- a great chapter on credit scoring and improving your score; a good section on finding a good credit counselor; establishing and re-establishing credit, negotiating with collectors and I liked the tests after each chapter. The only thing I would have like more of is some negotiating tips but overall it's good.
I'd recommend Liz Weston's Your Credit Score as well.
Complete Understanding.......2006-05-19
This book is definately informative. It not only helps you understand ways to repair your credit, but gives you knowledge of how to make responsible decisions in using credit. It covers every aspect of credit from the major players, credit scores, and how to reestablish and establish credit.
Great Book-very informative.......2005-10-06
This book is a must read!! If you know anyone that has credit or financial issues, teenagers about to graduate from HS and college age kids-this would be a great gift for any occasion. Kids need to be informed now before they go out and start opening credit accounts they will later regret. They need to be educated on how to establish and maintain a great credit rating. Parents can use this as a guide. Buy it and read it for yourself. I am happy I have this book and look forward to sharing it and all that I have learned from it.
This Is The Only Credit Guide You Need.......2005-08-13
I read this book and was amazed by the amount of information it gave. This author hits every area of credit that people need help with. Everything from credit scores to id theft is covered here and in great detail. It even gives little quizes at the end of each chapter to help you retain the info. The best part is that the chapters are so well segmented that you can just flip to the area you need help with and go from there.
This book by far is the best credit guide out there today. The ones I've read in the past just touch on certain things here and there, but this author really gives you what you need. I'm buying copies for each of my college children. It is highly recommended!

Written by a Professional Loan Broker.......2003-01-24
Howard L. Russell is a professional loan broker who has been working in the trenches getting loans for his clients for years. He has also talked to thousands of people who didn't qualify for a loan and finally realized no one had written a complete book on the subject.
"After you read this book, you will be able to get a copy of your credit report and sit down at the kitchen table with a pen, paper and calculator and determine whether you qualify for a loan or not. If you don't quality, you will know exactly why and what to do about it." -Howard L. Russell
The Insider Credit Handbook will show you:
1. How to get, read and understand your credit report
2. How to establish credit
3. How to re-establish credit
4. What is a personal loan: what it takes to qualify for one and how to get it
the two kinds of car loans: what it takes to qualify and how to get one
5. Home equity loans: what they are and how to qualify to get one
6. Using a loan broker: what they do, what they charge and avoiding the rip-off guys
7. Bankruptcy and what to do next. An alternative to bankruptcy.
In the first chapter you learn exactly where to go to find your credit report. Web site info and phone numbers and how to get your report fast. In the back of the book, there are sample reports so you can read this book and see examples on the actual forms.
Once you get your "own" report, that is when this book gets really helpful!
Like: You might see: Sum-ACCTS 18, 3-ZEROS, 14-ONES
What does ACCTS:18 mean? When you see this on your report it will mean you have 18 loans listed on your credit report.
The author takes you step-by-step through your entire report! How unique to actually have someone spend that much time explaining things. Oh the beauty of books. There is no way the author could spend this much time in person because he would be out getting loans for his clients. So, this is really the "decoder" for your report. Although, I must say, he does do everything he can to help people get their credit back so they can get a loan the next time they apply. There are plenty of examples and stories that were quite interesting to read.
There are some very important "warnings" listed. Like if a loan officer pulls a credit report and sees lots of recent inquiries, it might mean you are trying to borrow a lot of money in a short period of time or you have already been turned down a few times.
You know, I don't normally review "finance" type books, but this one is dang interesting! It is like entering this secret little world of loans. The font size is nice and easy on the eyes.
This should be required reading at some time during high school! Everyone in America needs this information, because eventually you will need a loan. At that point it might be too late to undo the damage caused by mistakes you didn't even know you made!
Highly Recommended!

Nobody knows like an insider.......2000-08-05
For the inside scoop on how to go from bad credit to good credit, this is an excellent source. It's full of sound, practical tips and information that people who want to move ahead really need to know. No matter what your income or credit history, unless you've worked in the credit business, you can't know all the facts this book has to offer. Russell has the experience in the business to know his subject from the inside out and he writes in a way that everyone can understand. One of the things I learned from this book is that there are ways to apply for loans without creating credit report inquiries. If you have bad credit, this could be a lifesaver! But whatever your financial goals, this book is sure to help you move toward them.

Book Description
After the heartbreaking death of his son Willie, Abraham Lincoln and his family fled the gloom that hung over the White House, moving into a small cottage in Washington, D.C., on the grounds of the Soldiers' Home, a residence for disabled military veterans. In Lincoln's Sanctuary, historian Matthew Pinsker offers a fascinating portrait of Lincoln's stay in this cottage and tells the story of the president's remarkable growth as a national leader and a private man. Lincoln lived at the Soldiers' Home for a quarter of his presidency, and for nearly half of the critical year of 1862, but most Americans (including many scholars) have not heard of the place. Indeed, this is the first volume to specifically connect this early "summer White House" to key wartime developments, including the Emancipation Proclamation, the firing of McClellan, the evolution of Lincoln's "Father Abraham" image, the election of 1864, and the assassination conspiracy. Through a series of striking vignettes, the reader discovers a more accessible Lincoln, demonstrating what one visitor to the Soldiers' Home described as his remarkable "elasticity of spirits." At his secluded cottage, the president complained to his closest aides, recited poetry to his friends, reconnected with his wife and family, conducted secret meetings with his political enemies, and narrowly avoided assassination attempts. Perhaps most important, he forged key friendships that helped renew his flagging spirits. The cottage became a refuge from the pressures of the White House, a place of tranquility where Lincoln could refresh his mind. Based on research in rarely tapped sources, especially the letters and memoirs of people who lived or worked at the Soldiers' Home, Lincoln's Sanctuary offers the unexpected--a completely fresh view of Abraham Lincoln--through the window of a place that helped shape his presidency.

Lincoln's Sanctuary in the Midst of the Storm of War.......2005-10-12
In each of the years he served as President of the United
States (minus the 11 southern states which seceded launching the Civil War!) President Abraham Lincoln, his wife Mary and family would journey to the Soldiers Retirement Home about 4 miles from the White House. Son Robert would visit on his trips home from Harvard. Youngest Lincoln son Tad enjoyed the Soldiers' Home where he had a menagerie of pets; got to know the guard troops from Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio stationed there. Wife Mary was often vacationing in New England or shopping in New York.
In this atmosphere Lincoln enjoyed the camaraderie of soldiers; received visitors and enjoyed the company of Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton living in a nearby cottage.
It was in this location that the President agonized over his decision to issue the Emancipation Proclamation; decided to fire
George B. McClellan and help plan the 1864 presidential campaign.
Every day Lincoln would ride a horse to the White House surrounded by mounted cavalryman. His wife Mary fell from her carriage in July, 1863 while traveling to the home. She was seriously injured .
Pinsker tells us of plots against Lincoln's life. He may have even been fired upon by an unknown assassin according to a soldier who reported this incident in his postwar memoirs.
Matthew Pinsker has written an outstanding book adding to our knowledge of the heretofore little known Lincoln residence at the Soldiers Home. The Home is now a National Landmark and is being renovated and opened for the public. One can imagine how awed poet Walt Whitman was as he saw Lincoln on his daily ride from the White House to the Soldiers Home.
Pinsker draws on a vast array of first person accounts, letters, memoirs and can be complimented on adding to our knowledge of the Lincoln presidency.
The book is well illustated with maps and is an outstanding addition to anyone interested in the Civil War and the Lincoln presidency. Well recommended!
The First "Camp David".......2005-04-06
This book was a wonderful find. I read it in two days on a business trip and found the writing style enjoyable, the research accurate and detailed while not at all overbearing, and the information very interesting. There are still very little details of the Lincoln's day to day activities at the Soldier's Home. None of the Lincoln's kept diaries and official documentation of purchases, visitors, and happenings were very casual compared to the entourage and details which follow a modern day president on vacation. But the author uncovered letters and diaries of the soldiers and visitors who were around the Lincoln's at this time and from these sources has discovered a wealth of information. The book parallels each of the decisive war time decisions made by Lincoln, and shows how his daily commute to the Soldiers Home from the White House and back, and the relaxing time spent with his family during summer nights and weekends, helped to shape some of his actions and achievements.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about Lincoln the person, with an interest in his politics and Civil War presidency. This book is a wonderful addition to the new writings on the Sixteenth President.
Something new about Lincoln.......2003-12-12
This book provides new information about Lincoln and his family, which is highly unusual for someone as researched as Lincoln. Based on letters and recollections of the people who saw him there, this book gives a picture of Lincoln in robe and slippers away from the chaos of the war time White House. A definate addition to what is known about Lincoln.
excellent and timely.......2003-08-06
This is a well written book and very timely as action is being taken to renovate the Lincoln Cottage. I reside on the grounds of the Soldiers' Home where the cottage is located and know the value of the cottage in our history. The facility is now known as the Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington. The cottage has always been known as the Anderson Cottage.

Sloppy and hastily done.......1999-08-26
This book is an interesting attempt to do something worthwhile, but the writing is very poor and there are too many factual errors. For example, just about every Italian word or phrase used is misspelled or somehow botched. The "ordering" of the Italian greats doesn't work at all--he just puts all the scientists first, then moves into other areas. A straight chronological approach would have been better. There are some real howlers--as when a portrait of the 19th-century opera composer Vincenzo Bellini is used to illustrate an essay on the Bellini family of Renaissance painters. The inclusion of people like Madonna also doesn't add to this book's appeal.
INTERESTING BOOK, INCOMPLTE;MANY PROMINANT NAMES EXCLUDED?.......1999-02-07
I was very interested to read Mr. Spignesi book THE ITALIAN 100, however after completing it, I was left wondering why he found it justified to include Madonna and others (with questionable qualifications) and not people like Il Commandatore Enzo Ferrari. Can one talk about sports cars without naming a Ferrari? Exactly. Others notable names excluded were Barreta (handguns), Gucci (200 year old Fashion House) and others more worthy than some of those listed. This leaves me puzzled as to what criteria was used to qualify as an Italian 100. Other than this it is a very interesting book showing the many contributions of Italians in the fields of Science,Inventions, Medicine,Exporers,Arts,Sports, Philosophy etc... in the world.
An important historical review.......1998-08-03
Mr. Spignesi has added a useful and highly readable addition to works about Italians throughout history. Whether one is of Italian heritage or not most of the biographires included in " The Italian 100" will make anyone more apprecaitive of the singular contributions Itlalians have made over the last 1000 years. Mr. Spignesi's book offers an implied challenge to any other ethnic group to prove they have made a greater contribution to our society, to the world we live in at the start of the 21st century.

Why Size Matters
by Caroline Oliver
There are a number of reasons why a board may be large, among them the desire to have diverse representation. But whatever the reasons, there comes a point at which a board becomes too cumbersome to effectively represent its ownership. It is difficult to have meaningful debate in large groups--progress is slow, factions may form, and resources are wasted. In this article, Caroline Oliver lays out some critical questions that boards should consider in order to determine if their membership is too big; she then offers some preliminary suggestions about how a board may get its membership to optimum size and maximum effectiveness.
A New Basis for Governance Effectiveness Research
by John Carver
Most governance research to date has consisted of descriptions of various types of governance arrangements. Absent from the literature is an underlying organizing principal, a conception of the fundamental purpose of governance. Without this underlying principle, attempts to assess effectiveness will fail. In this article, John Carver proposes a succinct definition of the purpose of governance and draws out some necessary consequences of this definition. This conception of the purpose of governance can serve as an underlying principle to guide research on the effectiveness of governance.

Book Description
What do most career women do after a successful run on Madison Avenue? Catherine Finerty watched her friends settle into the country-club life. She opted instead for Mexico.
Soon after moving to Guadalajara, Finerty found herself visiting small settlements hidden deep in Mexico's tropical mountains. It was in Jesus Maria--so isolated that one could only get there by mule or small plane--that she found her new calling as the village nurse.
With its bugs and heat, no phones or running water, Jesus Maria was hardly a place to enjoy one's retirement, but Finerty was quickly charmed by its community of Cora Indians and mestizos. In a Village Far from Home richly describes this remote village with its festivals and traditions, and a cast of memorable characters you'd expect in a novel. Finerty's story takes readers deep into the Sierra Madre to reveal its true treasure: the soul of a people.
Customer Reviews:
interesting.......2007-09-11
The book was enthusiastically recommended by a friend who has lived there and knows the author. It did, indeed, give a very nice insight into conditions there, but did not generate in me the same excitement that my friend (who has lived there) has as it records something very dear to her. It is interesting and worth the read, but I read it more from a sense of obligation than true interest.
