5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2003-03-26

This is the most practical book I have ever came across. It is especially good for those who have read books on the fundamentals of positive thinking, subconcious mind, value system, goal setting etc, but don't know how to go about applying them in real life. The Millionaire Mindset does not only tell you about the fundamentals (which are clear cut, not long-winded & easily understood), but also shows you step-by-step how to go about achieving what you want in life. For anybody who wants to attain success & wealth, mindset plays the most important part, then come courage & take MASSIVE ACTIONS!!! Well done, Gerry!

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad book but not an oustanding book.......2002-09-04

I have joined his and his associate seminar. Therefore, I have his book. Major advantage of his book is that he is drawing you to the right direction with combination of others ideas. Major disadvantage of his book is his illustrations are not very well arranged. If I have never attended of any kinds of his seminar, I will not able to finish his first chapter because I have seen a lot the ideas from the others. In short, it is a great book because he shares his experience in understanding and practising others great Millionaires' thinking. Worth to invest!

5 out of 5 stars Practical.......2001-10-18

I bought this book and was very surprised at how practical it is. This guy's story is phenomenal. If he could do it, anyone can. It's a lot more than a book. It's a workbook.

I don't hesitate for a second to recommend it to anyone who is serious about creating wealth using the M.S.I. (Multiple Source of Income) method.

I was going to buy this book until I read Koo Hang Boom's review. This dude wrote the same review for a number of books shown on the same website. I won't buy this book until I get a legit review from someone who read it. I put a one star to balance out the stars ... for now.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Self-Improvement Book of the Century.......2000-09-15

The Millionaire Mindset is one of the best self-improvement books of the century. The concepts mentioned in this book are awesome and mind-blowing. If you seriously WANT to become wealthy, you must read this book!!!

    Book Description

Through biographies of China's most colorful and famous personalities, John Wills displays the five-thousand-year sweep of Chinese history from the legendary sage emperors to the tragedy of Tiananmen Square. This unique introduction to Chinese history and culture uses more than twenty exemplary lives, including those of statesmen, philosophers, poets, and rulers, to provide the focus for accounts of key historical trends and periods. What emerges is a provocative rendering of China's moral landscape, featuring characters who have resonated in the historical imagination as examples of villainy, heroism, wisdom, spiritual vision, political guile, and complex combinations of all of these.

Investigating both the legends and the facts surrounding these figures, Wills reveals the intense interest of the Chinese in the brilliance and in the frail complexities of their heroes. Included, for instance, is a description of the frustrations and anxieties of Confucius, who emerges as a vulnerable human being trying to restore the world to the virtue and order of the sage kings. Wills recounts and questions the wonderfully shocking stories about the seventh-century Empress Wu, an astute ruler and shaper of an increasingly centralized monarchy, who has since assumed a prominent position in the Chinese tradition's rich gallery of bad examples--because she was a woman meddling in politics. The portrayal of Mao Zedong, which touches upon this leader's earthy personality and his reckless political visions, demonstrates the tendency of the Chinese not to divorce ideology from its human context: Maoism for them is a form of "objective" Marxism, inseparable from one man's life and leadership.

Each of the twenty chapters provides a many-sided exploration of a "slice" of Chinese history, engaging the general reader in a deep and personal encounter with China over the centuries and today. The biographies repeatedly mirror the moral earnestness of the Chinese, the great value they place on the ruler-minister relationship, and their struggles with tensions among practicality, moral idealism, and personal authenticity. Culminating in a reflection on China's historical direction in the aftermath of Tiananmen Square, the biographies show the modern Chinese still inspired and frustrated by a complex heritage of moral fervor and political habits and preconceptions. As absorbing as it is wide ranging, this history is written for the general public curious about China and for the student beginning to study its rich cultural heritage.

5 out of 5 stars Heroes and villains.......2006-11-27

'It remains hard to imagine a short-term bearable future for the people of China,' wrote John Willis, who teaches history at Southern Cal, in 1994.
He also said that a continuing theme of Chinese society has been 'optimism about what man can be and can accomplish.'
It is certainly a portentous question, how a country with a thoughtful and ancient social philosophy of optimism can have attained the sorry state it is in now. Wills attempts to answer the question by looking at the lives of about 20 great Chinese, to understand what they thought they were doing and, also, what later Chinese thought about them.
'This book . . . is intended for people who never have paid much attention to China and now want a quick and graspable introduction to some main themes in its stirring history.' The development of Chinese political theory is far easier to grasp than the equally significant development of Chinese religion.
Portraits of famous men (and one woman, the scandalous Empress Wu) are an appropriate way to enter Chinese mentality, says Wills, because the Chinese have been 'more inclined than most peoples to cast their moral and political principles and arguments in terms of individuals who are idolized or reviled.'
Whether they really are more inclined to personalize their own history than other people is doubtful, but Wills makes a good case that the Chinese have placed more value on theory than on good practice. 'The drama was heightened, the selflesslness more perfect when nothing else was accomplished except to demonstrate one's firmness in principle in the face of futility, humiliation and death,' he writes.
Many other societies have preferred to honor leaders who got things changed. Robin Hood, for example. but the great Chinese outlaw story, 'Water Margin,' does not have the happy ending (for the common folk) of the Robin Hood story, or William Tell or many another hero outside China.
From earliest times -- that is, from the third emperor, Yu, the first subject of 'Mountain of Fame' -- the Chinese have systematized government, in sharp contrast to the helterskelter turmoil of, say, Europe following the German invasions. The result, says Wills, has been paradoxical.
'From Wang Mang to Deng Xiaoping, Chinese policymakers all too often have lacked Su's suspicion of uniformity and have made trouble for themselves and their people by trying to impose on all Chinese policies that make sense for some important part of it.'
Su is Su Dongpo, a poet and politician of the 11th century, the earliest hero in 'Mountain of Fame' who is more history than myth. A mass of Su's essays, poems and state papers have survived.
This is surprisingly late. For Europe, Sumeria, Egypt and India, we have much earlier famous men that we can think we understand. Whether we can understand the early Chinese luminaries or not, though, Wills believes we can understand what their myths mean today.
The reason 'Mountain of Fame' is important is that China has too many people to ignore and, as Wills observes, has been impervious to outside suasion. If China is to be governed, the Chinese will have to do it, and, given their deep consciousness of the past (even Mao the revolutionary was enthralled to it), it will have to happen in the context of the Wus, the Sus and the other towering figures of Chinese history.

5 out of 5 stars Walking on the Mountain of Fame.......2000-08-04

Professor Willis has, in this fine book, made a substantial contribution to the knowledge of Chinese history for those who read in English. Mountain of Fame is an exciting overview of famous persons from China's prehistoric heroes to today's names in the news. The book consists of twenty chapters, most of them dedicated to an individual who embodies some essential aspect of their milieu much in the same tradition as Plutarch's Lives describes the historic noble Greeks and Romans.

The penultimate and last chapters are dedicated to multiple persons and the flurry of events that has propelled China into a leading position in today's world news. This makes them of special interest to those seeking a broad overview on recent events in China.

Wills' historical description at the beginning of each chapter offers a necessary context for understand the person he has chosen to discuss. I have used this book for enjoyment and as reference repeatedly since adding it to my collection.

This book may not be the best place to start learning Chinese history. However, I think that if the reader has some interest in the subject and a little exposure to Chinese philosophy, language or history this book makes an invaluable addition to any ones library.

Old Ethan, we love thee, Thou valiant and bold Thy name shall be spoken Where brave deeds are told. While bright skies bend oer ui, And pure waters flow, In the name of old Ethaa Well to victory go. Then let every freeman, Remember with joy, The deeds of old Ethan, The Green Mountain Boy From mountain and valley Let patriots cry, Hurra for old Ethan, The hero of Ti INTRODUCTION. The American Revolution called forth the latent ener gies of many individuals who, in a more peaceable state of political affairs, would have slumbered in obscurity and gone down to the grave unhonored and unknown. The very nature of the policy of Great Britain toward the Colonies a policy every way tyrannical and oppressive was calculated to call into action the efforts of every friend of liberty. It was an attempt to strip the people of their rights and manacle them with the fetters of slavery but, thanks to the spirit which prevailed among our fathers thanks to the patriotism which then warmed the hearts of the people the mercenaries of a foreign power were unequal to the task of accomplishing the designs of their masters. True-hearted volunteers rallied to the calls of the brave and wise men of our country Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Franklin, Lee, Patrick Henry all imbued with a spirit worthy of the little band of Greeks which defended the pass of Thermopylae and their national liberty. They fought and conquered, these doughty sons of Columbia, and their declining years were cheered with the knowledge that the country for which they had struggled so long and at such fearful sacrifices, was now free and her people prosperous and happy. That their deeds of heroism, privation and sufferings were gratefully 10 Introduction. remembered by those who profited most in that hour of supreme national rejoicing, is best shown in the firm, unyielding spirit in which they flung defiance back upon the enemy in the immortal utterances of July 4, 1776. Perhaps no individual of equal advantages, and in the station he occupied, contributed more toward estab lishing the independence of our country than Ethan Allen, of Vermont, unless it be the single exception of John Paul Jones. The mass of people among whom Allen resided were rude and uncultured, yet bold in spirit and insanely zealous in action. It consequently follows that no one but a man of strong, natural endow ments of much decision, energy and bravery-could control their prejudices and inclinations...

I purchased this book for a friend of mine who happens to be a single parent and in the market for buying a home. This book kept her a step ahead. Her "ducks" where so in a row that her realtor said I have never seen a transaction go through so smoothly. I'm in the market now and she strongly encouraged me to pick one up for myself. I love it.

My clients would absolutely love this book! In fact, it would be very helpful for Sellers too. Great insight as to what Buyer's are looking for. Of course, any Realtor worth their commission should be giving their clients all of this information from day one.

I prepare an extensive spiral bound notebook customized for my client's needs and market place.

3 out of 5 stars Not as helpful as author's previous book.......2005-03-11

I would recommend _Starting Out_ (Davis's previous book) over this one. That book (Starting Out) is the best book on buying a house I've seen and I've looked at dozens. This book seems to contain some of the same information, but less of it. I think the take-along workbook idea, at least in this format, is a failure. The spiral binding is flimsy. All of the pages of my copy are falling out and it hasn't seen much use. The workbook idea is good, but not flexible enough. Sure you could make copies of a page if you needed another sheet for interviewing a real estate agent and you could write out some more of your house wish list items if you found there weren't enough lines, but it doesn't seem worth it. I think most people would be more comfortable with whatever organizational system they already use: a paper planner, a PDA, just typing things out on the computer, whatever. The content is great, but you can get that ( and more of it) in her other book.

Franz Schubert is a singularly undocumented composer. Direct accounts of his life are scarce, incomplete, and contradictory; even the memoirs of his closest friends, mostly written long after his death, reflect the writers more than the subject. His own surviving letters and diaries are often poignant, but sparse; it is in his music that he truly revealed himself. No wonder he has been the victim of endless speculation and rumor, leaving his image encrusted in fantasy, sentimentality, and condescension. Numerous serious, conscientious biographies have attempted to rectify this. Christopher Gibbs's excellent, informative, generously illustrated new study is a welcome addition. Gibbs has written and lectured widely on Schubert; his style is lucid, scholarly but not pedantic, and except for a stiff, ponderous beginning, flows with natural ease.

Gibbs focuses on some relatively unexplored areas, notably Beethoven's profound influence on Schubert, both personal and musical, though they never met. He also demolishes several popularly held misconceptions, showing, for example, that Schubert took an active part in promoting his own career, enjoyed frequent successes, and lived to see his fame begin to grow. Gibbs demonstrates that Schubert was by no means a "natural," untutored composer who simply shook melodies out of his sleeve, and that it was not his untimely death that caused so many works to remain "unfinished." Some of these refutations have already been offered by previous writers, but are well worth repeating. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, in his splendid book On the Trail of the Schubert Songs, points out that Schubert's self-criticism often drove him to compose the same text several times, though unlike Beethoven he left no "sketchbooks that resemble battlefields." Hans Gál, in his Franz Schubert and the Essence of Melody (a beautiful book despite the clumsy title), suggests with a composer's empathetic insight that Schubert may have abandoned a work, like the C-major Piano Sonata, because he had modulated himself into a corner or hit a snag in the development, going on to something else while hoping for future inspiration.

Gibbs deserves special gratitude for attacking the credibility of the most recent Schubert scholarship, which claims to have uncovered evidence of heavy drinking, debauchery, and unbridled sensuality, both hetero- and homosexual, born and bred from Vienna's depraved climate, Schubert's hedonistic circle of friends, and his own allegedly immoral nature. These assertions reveal more about our own times and attitudes than about Schubert and his world. --Edith Eisler

                      Book Description

Franz Schubert's tragically short life was lived in one of Europe's most richly musical cities: a Vienna that worshipped Beethoven and where Rossini and Paganini drew crowds. Christopher Gibbs considers how and what Schubert composed, taking a fresh look at this misunderstood composer, particularly the unfolding of his professional career, his relationship to Beethoven, the growth of his reputation and public image and his darker side of drinking, depression and sexual ambiguity. This searching and sympathetic biography questions the customary sentimental clichés and the recent revisionist views concerning this elusive genius.

3 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introductory Biography of the Composer.......2005-03-16

This is an excellent and concise introductory biography of Schubert for the general reader. Gibbs debunks many of the Schubert myths that have arisen since his tragic early death, and explores Schubert's social mileu. Of primary importance in Schubert's life is his circle of male friends. In addition he tackles some of the recent research concerning the composer's possible homosexuality, and explores some of the rudimentary evidence that exists about Schubert's relationships with women. What is lacking in this book is more analysis of Schubert's oeuvre.

2 out of 5 stars equivocal, halting, and awkward.......2001-02-15

I'd cut this more slack if it were the only biography of Schubert ever written. Obviously it is not, so how does it distinguish itself from the others? It was more recently published, and that, I'm afraid, is it. It is always hedging, it wants desparately to offend nobody, and manages in this way to offend at least me.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing clarity to a misunderstood composer.......2000-11-02

Poor Schubert! The Viennese-born composer was little appreciated in his day, even by the circle of close friends who periodically sponsored programs of his songs and chamber music. Despite the fact that several of his friends were writers, none seem to have thought to record their memories of the composer until decades later. After his death at age 31, the composer was turned into a Romantic symbol, a sentimentalized ideal of the tragic genius who's life was cut short, etc. In more recent times, Schubert has been the subject of intense scholarly debates about issues like gender, which also want to idealize the composer (as gay icon). Christopher Gibbs acknowledges all these issues and provides a clearly written and frequently insightful study of the composer's life, without taking sides in any of the academic debates that have consistently misinterpreted his significance. For example, Gibbs notes that 19th century writers often said (selfishly) "Alas, we have been denied more glorious examples of Schubert's work." Instead, Gibbs suggests that the real loss was that Schubert died just before he gained the popularity his music deserved, and before he had the chance to clearly distinguish between mature works and juvenalia. You will gain a sense of Schubert as a real flesh-and-blood artist with desires and problems (he sometimes drank too much, it seems), rather than as a romanticized image of "doomed youth." A very welcome addition to the literature!

                                      Book Description

Franz Schubert died in obscurity in 1828, little-known outside his circle of Viennese friends and admirers. In this biography, former BBC musical broadcaster Richard Baker examines the story of Franz Schubert in words and pictures. Bringing to life theVienna of the early 19th century, as well as the composer's friends, family, and work, Schubert is both a tribute to and an exploration of a remarkable life.

This book is really great and we learned about Sacagawea in my social studies class. I liked the part when Sacagwea heard Lewis say "Chief" in Indian and she knew that it was her brother, so she was happy. When I got to the end of the book I didn't know that Sacagawea died and it made cry, but it was still a great book and I liked reading it. I learned that she had to give up her kids but Charbonneau made a deal with Clark that when the children grew up he would give them to her. When they got to Sacagawea`s homeland the Indians greeted them and sang a song. Lastly, I learned that the people traded their goods for other stuff from the Indians like horses. It was a great book to read.
