        Book Description

A slave determined to gain freedom, a widow battling poverty and despair, a man of God grappling with spiritual and worldly troubles, and a former Confederate soldier seeking a new life. They lived in the South during 1865 -- a year that saw war, disunion, and slavery give way to peace, reconstruction, and emancipation.

Between January and December 1865, these four people witnessed, from very different vantage points, the death of the Old South and the birth of the New South. Civil War historian Stephen V. Ash reconstructs their daily lives, their fears and hopes, and their frustrations and triumphs in vivid detail -- telling a dramatic story of real people in a time of great upheaval and offering a fresh perspective on a pivotal moment in history.

4 out of 5 stars Great angle to the Civil War.......2007-02-06

Wonderful way to tie several story lines into each other while revealing true stories from the Civil War. I'd recommend this for anyone interested in the history of this period.

5 out of 5 stars A Step Back In Time.......2006-01-15

I highly recommend this book. The stories are captivating. I didn't want it to end. As the review states, this book is about the lives of 4 ordinary people who lived through the Civil War. You will get caught up in the people and their lives. It's almost as if you know them personally. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Virtual Time Machine.......2006-01-15

Would you like some real insight into the lives of your ancestors during a portion of the Civil War? Do you wish you could take a time machine trip back to 1865 and feel what it was like for ordinary people, without Hollywood glamour, without layers of historical filters?

Read this book, wherein author Stephen Ash recounts how the last year of the War Between the States affected the lives of four very different, very ordinary people. One is a widow struggling daily with crushing poverty. Another is a young man developing into a preacher. One is a former Confederate soldier trying to establish a new life and avoid the chaos around him and the fourth a slave whose inner desire for liberty cannot be extinguished. The travails and emotions of these people are easily recognizable to us today. In some measure you can vicariously experience this momentous period in our history through them. Their stories are individually compelling and wrenching for different reasons but you will not be able to escape caring for them.

Ash follows each person through 1865, the year that saw the end of the war and the end of slavery. They each saw the year from very different vantage points but separately and together their stories reveal the typical. Ash avoids being broad, which would be vague and unsatisfactory to the reader. Further, he makes no judgements and allows these individuals to simply be who they are. What results is less the glossy, two dimensional portrait that one often finds when reading biographies of famous people and more the familial.

I found the book captivating and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Very, very good.......2006-01-04

This book is a very, very good read. I am normally a very slow reader, but I finished this book in about two weeks. I read it before I went to bed, I read it at work, I read it in my spare time. I just couldn't get enough of it. The book follows four people in the South--one a slave, then a freedman; one a widow and refugee; one a former Confederate soldier who is moving towards the priesthood; and one a preacher who has lots of idle time--in differing locations. Their experiences tell the tale of the experiences of many Southerners at this time in history. As the author states in the foreword, though, this book does not attempt to claim that the experience of these four people can tell the tale of the entire South in 1865, but it gives us an understanding of what the experience was like for some people. The book is also interesting because most books of this nature stop with the end of the Confederacy, but this book deals with the whole year, so we get the reaction to the slaves being freed, Yankees occupying the South, the quest for jobs, and more. Overall, the book is well written and extremely interesting.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent book!.......2004-07-10

This was a wonderful book. Since it was a true story, it really gives you an inside look on these people and their lives. Stephen Ash doesn't sugar coat a thing and it gives you a wonderful perspective that you won't get in today's media or in an American History class.

        5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have .......2007-03-25

I discovered this book several years ago. I teach in a school with mostly immigrant children who have little background knowledge of the heroes presented here. They love borrowing my copy to read during independent reading and I have used the book with my reading groups as well. The biographies are concise, interesting, and offer links to on-line information as well. I am such a fan that I have actually bought copies for each of my students to have for their own every year as an end-of-year/end of state testing gift. My students love to nominate candidates they would like to have included in a second volume. Not only are my students becoming better readers, but they are eager to write after being exposed to this book. Thank goodness for Dennis Deneberg and Lorraine Roscoe!

5 out of 5 stars Love the Book....Love Dr. Denenberg.......2006-07-31

I was a student of Dr. Denenberg's during the fall semester of 2001. I was so lucky to have had to opportunity to learn from such an amazing person. I use many of his teachings in my classroom today. I love reading this book and my students love it too! I've actually purchased copies for my friends and student teachers. This book is an asset to your library - and one that you'll treasure for years to come.

        5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book.......2006-01-18

I went to a workshop recently where Dr. Denenberg presented, and am so excited to have a copy of his book. As a teacher I can see many uses for this book in the classroom. The stories really grab you and make you want to know more about each hero. I especially like that the authors included a diving in section for each hero. They give the reader other sources to find more information about their hero. I hope Dr. Denenberg writes many more books! I love his work.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and engaging.......2006-01-18

When I first found this book, I was impressed with the simple, accessible, straight-forward presentation of REAL WORLD heroes - for kids. When they get a chance to learn about the accomplishments of these people, they can have a real vision for themselves and for their lives. This is the kind of book that can make a positive impact on our world, a kid at a time, or better.

When I next read through the book, I was very impressed with the writing, for it presents a person (aka hero), his/her accomplishment(s), and then asks the readers to relate this to their own lives. The call it "Explore" - it is an invitation for the reader to make a part of the hero story become a part of them. What you are left with is the possibility that I can, that I am, that we are... It is a calling to be a hero, ourselves.

        5 out of 5 stars A Very Inspiring Book!.......2003-08-21

Dr. Dennis Denenberg and Lorraine Roscoe have written a book so inspiring and appropriate for children that this book should be in every classroom in the United States! Hard as if may be to believe, I have literally bought more than 60 copies of this book to share with parents and educators around the country. Every one I've spoken with who has seen and read this book has nothing but rave reviews to give it!

5 out of 5 stars A Must for every Homeowner thinking about selling!.......2006-10-03

The process of selling your home can be a very emotional and stressful one, while the process of choosing the RIGHT realtor can also be confusing.

This book helps avoid costly mistakes made by many homeowners, who attempt to sell their most valuable assest on their own, or who don't have enough information on how to choose the best realtor for them. This book gets the point across of how the NET return is the most important number to the seller(finally!), highlighting a common mistake many homesellers make by focusing only on the commission charged.

Written by two very experienced agents, this book outlines the important tips for gettting the MOST money for your property in any market, and how to avoid common pitfalls made by inexperienced homeowners and/or agents.

Using real-life case studies, this book demonstrates how empowering yourself with information can make all the difference to your bottom line, as well as the level of stress involved in the selling of your home. I would highly recommend to anyone thinking about selling that you read this book first!

                        5 out of 5 stars Eye Opener.......2007-07-19

                        This book was a tremedous help to me as I got ready to put a house on the market. The two most important items for me were;
                        1. Do not overprice your house:
I did this with another listing and lost out big time. After everyone came and looked, never to return, my listing became stale and was forgotten. I will never do that again! This book explains this very well.
                        2. Staging your house for sale:
I wasn't a believer in this at all. I thought people looking for a home would look past all your stuff and use their own imagination and after reading this book I realize this is not true. It is of the utmost importance to have it looking as inticing as possible and ALL the nic nacs need to be packed up and put away.
I found this book to be immensely helpful and recommend it to anyone getting ready to sell a house.

                            Book Description

The first biography of Jackson Barnett, who gained unexpected wealth from oil found on his property. This book explores how control of his fortune was violently contested by his guardian, the state of Oklahoma, the Baptist Church, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and an adventuress who kidnapped and married him. Coming into national prominence as a case of Bureau of Indian Affairs mismanagement of Indian property, the litigation over Barnett's wealth lasted two decades and stimulated Congress to make long-overdue reforms in its policies towards Indians. Highlighting the paradoxical role played by the federal government as both purported protector and pilferer of Indian money, and replete with many of the major agents in twentieth-century Native American history, this remarkable story is not only captivating in its own right but highly symbolic of America's diseased and corrupt national Indian policy.

                            3 out of 5 stars YAWNNNNNNNNNNNN.......2006-08-22

This book was interesting but BORING!!! I do not like books that hash out court trials and in particular when it revolves around money. That was 85% of this book. How many times can you go over what was done with this money or those funds. Penny pinching in print. I'm not interested in financial reports. I was interested in the world's richest Indian. I got very little of him, but I suppose there wasn't much to say about him. They gave his wife a really bad time, but like witnesses for the defense said, she gave him a better life than he had when she found him and helped him use his money to live a life someone with that much money should. Who was hurt by it? Why did everyone care so much? They wanted their share which they didn't deserve. It was really something how people acted. No different than today, 2006! But when EVERY page had some dollar amount on it-how can you keep track of what's being discussed? How many times can they doubt or affirm the sanity of Jackson Barnett??? The poor old guy lived to 90, so I guess you could say that 'living well is the best revenge'.

With some writers, an abunce of detail is mind-numbing, as in the "begat" passages of the Old Testament. In contrast, Tanis Thorne uses a myriad of details as would a pointillistic painter to create a vivid and poignant biography of Afro-Muskogee Jackson Barnett, "The Richest Indian in the World".

Barnett had belonged to the Muskogee faction opposed to individual land allotment, known as Snakes. On the Snakes' refusing to designate choice homesteads, allotments were issued in their names in the hardscrabble hills of Oklahoma. Barnett's 160-acre allotment ironically turned out to be centered over one of the world's great oil pools. Barnett was thereafter placed under state court conservatorship to limit the enormous flow of oil royalties to a meager living allowance.

An attractive "adventuress" heard of Barnett's wealth, located his modest home and eloped with him the following day.

A three-way battle erupted between the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Oklahoma state courts and Anna Barnett for control of the fortune. Anna Barnett succeeded in prying free enough income to finance a move to a fashionable suburb of Los Angeles, where Jackson Barnett passed many of his days directing traffic. He became a regular tourist attraction.

Anna ultimately lost after Jackson Barnett's death. The marriage was judicially annulled and Anna was evicted from the home. She died in poverty years later.

Dr. Thorne uses the biography to portray the inherent clash between Creek values of generosity and sharing and the dominant culture of selfishness. Using this theme, Dr. Thorne segues into a brief discussion of today's Cobell litigation challenging the entire federal trust accounting of American Indian funds.

This book is a valuable contribution to American Indian history. Beyond that, the book sets a high standard for combining historic writing with lively and accessible prose.
