Customer Reviews:
A "Tell it like it is" Book on being Thrifty.......2002-08-06
Sometimes, we need someone to sit us down and talk to us one on one about things, and in regards to living a thrifty lifestyle, author Pat Worthy Benson does just that in her book, Thrifty Sister: Saving Ways for Black Folks.
This is an excellent guide for those who are tired of being preached to about what they should or shouldn't do with their lives when it comes to spending money and setting priorities. Benson, who has spent over 30 years investigating, testing and living the thrifty lifestyle, is like a friend who sits down with you, tells you how being thrifty has helped her organize her life and how it can do the same for you.
There's info galore in this book on balancing your budget and managing your life, creating action plans for major, positive change, eliminating negative traits that are sabotaging your goals, improving your lifestyle on the money you currently earn, planning your future, and even down to the basics such as minimizing and prioritizing your grocery list, tips to keep you beautiful without paying a pretty penny, making a meal stretch, and so much more.
I would definitely recommend this book to everyone who feels the money crunch on a monthly basis and would want to get his or her finances and life in check.

A Martha Stewart for the African American Community.......2002-04-16
...And actually that's "pigeon holding" or catergorizing this book and it deserves so much more. I myself am a 35 year old single male, I've had this book for a while and continue to utilize Ms. Benson's valuable tips. I make a good financial living... But I still have to maintain a budget... Espeacially living in New York. I put one of her tips to the test, just to see if I could do it... and she's right... I recently was able to purchase a DVD/CD player... I say that, because it was from the savings from three weeks of my awareness to my grocerie bills, and a lot of my purchase's are from dipping in another bill payments, and then it's "rob Peter to pay Paul" senerio to play catch up ... I've learn to buy in bulk and "brown bag" it to work, instead of eating out every day- trying to be Cool. Now it's just on Friday's, and the savings enable that to be a great treat, and I've even treated myself to dinner out, on a few occasions... Overall, it's helped me to reevaluate my spending in all areas. What's even funnier is... ... I've also like some of the old fashion "Natural Beauty" remedies. This book has it's special drawer, in my apartment... So It'll always be at a hands reach. Thank You... Looking for your next installment.

Book Description
John C. Nicolay, who had known Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois, served as chief White House secretary from 1861 to 1865. Trained as a journalist, Nicolay had hoped to write a campaign biography of Lincoln in 1860, a desire that was thwarted when an obscure young writer named William Dean Howells got the job. Years later, however, Nicolay fulfilled his ambition; with John Hay, he spent the years from 1872 to 1890 writing a monumental ten-volume biography of Lincoln.
In preparation for this task, Nicolay interviewed men who had known Lincoln both during his years in Springfield and later when he became the president of the United States. "When it came time to write their massive biography, however," Burlingame notes, "he and Hay made sparing use of the interviews" because they had become "skeptical about human memory." Nicolay and Hay also feared that Robert Todd Lincoln might censor material that reflected "poorly on Lincoln or his wife."
Nicolay had interviewed such Springfield friends as Lincoln’s first two law partners, John Todd Stuart and Stephen T. Logan. At the Illinois capital in June and July 1875, he talked to a number of others including Orville H. Browning, U.S. senator and Lincoln’s close friend and adviser for over thirty-five years, and Ozias M. Hatch, Lincoln’s political ally and Springfield neighbor. Four years later he returned briefly and spoke with John W. Bunn, a young political "insider" from Springfield at the time Lincoln was elected president, and once again with Hatch.
Browning shed new light on Lincoln’s courtship and marriage, telling Nicolay that Lincoln often told him "that he was constantly under great apprehension lest his wife should do something which would bring him into disgrace" while in the White House. During their research, Nicolay and Hay also learned of Lincoln’s despondency and erratic behavior following his rejection by Matilda Edwards, and they were subsequently criticized by friends for suppressing the information. Burlingame argues that this open discussion of Lincoln’s depression of January 1841 is "perhaps the most startling new information in the Springfield interviews."
Briefer and more narrowly focused than the Springfield interviews, the Washington interviews deal with the formation of Lincoln’s cabinet, his relations with Congress, his behavior during the war, his humor, and his grief. In a reminiscence by Robert Todd Lincoln, for example, we learn of Lincoln’s despair at General Lee's escape after the Battle of Gettysburg: "I went into my father’s office ... and found him in [much] distress, his head leaning upon the desk in front of him, and when he raised his head there were evidences of tears upon his face. Upon my asking the cause of his distress he told me that he had just received the information that Gen. Lee had succeeded in escaping across the Potomac river. . ."
To supplement these interviews, Burlingame has included Nicolay’s unpublished essays on Lincoln during the 1860 campaign and on Lincoln’s journey from Springfield to Washington in 1861, essay’s based on firsthand testimony.
Customer Reviews:
Firsthand memories of Lincoln.......2007-08-23
An invaluable collection of recollections by persons who knew Lincoln before and during the presidency. The stories were recorded in interviews conducted by John Nicolay, one of Lincoln's White House secretaries. This book will probably be enjoyed more by specialists than by general readers. Five-star rating is based on book's usefulness to researchers.

Book Description
This book contains biographical sketches of 83 people, with particular attention paid to moments that changed their lives. In different ways, they all overcame an obstacle or adapted to an outside force or turned discouragement into hope. Included are actors (Humphrey Bogart, Clint Eastwood, Katharine Hepburn), comics (Woody Allen, Bob Hope), entrepreneurs (Bill Gates), presidents (Harry Truman, Jimmy Carter), and seemingly ordinary people whose lives have inspired countless others (Grandma Moses, Rosa Parks, Mother Teresa). News anchor Oprah Winfrey had been described as too emotional, too nice, too unprofessional, and too unattractive to succeed at her Baltimore television station. After her perceptive station manager transformed her from news anchor to talk show host, Oprah was in her element and on her way. Young Louis Armstrong didn't let a stay in reform school keep him down. He determined he would learn to play the cornet. This led "Satchmo" to world fame as an always affable trumpet virtuoso loved by millions. Some of the 83 knew exactly what they wanted and where they were going; others had no idea. But they all experienced major turning points that took them to greater things.

Book Description
Army scout, buffalo hunter, Indian fighter, and impresario of the world-renowned "Wild West Show," William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody lived the real American West and also helped create the "West of the imagination." Born in 1846, he took part in the great westward migration, hunted the buffalo, and made friends among the Plains Indians, who gave him the name Pahaska (long hair). But as the frontier closed and his role in "winning the West" passed into legend, Buffalo Bill found himself becoming the symbol of the destruction of the buffalo and the American Indian. Deeply dismayed, he spent the rest of his life working to save the remaining buffalo and to preserve Plains Indian culture through his Wild West shows.
This biography of William Cody focuses on his lifelong relationship with Plains Indians, a vital part of his life story that, surprisingly, has been seldom told. Bobby Bridger draws on many historical accounts and Cody's own memoirs to show how deeply intertwined Cody's life was with the Plains Indians. In particular, he demonstrates that the Lakota and Cheyenne were active cocreators of the Wild West shows, which helped them preserve the spiritual essence of their culture in the reservation era while also imparting something of it to white society in America and Europe. This dual story of Buffalo Bill and the Plains Indians clearly reveals how one West was lost, and another born, within the lifetime of one remarkable man.
