Jean Berlin's Inflated Resume.......2002-03-14

I direct your attention to the back cover of this book, wherein it states that Jean V. Berlin taught history at the University of Virginia. Turns out all she was was a teaching assistant! I guess you do't have to win the Pulitzer Prize to be found out as someone who makes stuff up about themselves!

Seriosly, this sort of inflation gives writers a bad name. Let's hope it was all just a misunderstanding.

Nothing Ms. Berlin says in her introduction allows us to escape the fact that Ada Bacot, while pretending to assert her independence and find her self-esteem, simply came to the front and did what Dorothea Dix feared women nurses would do ... find another husband. How pathetic.

I have never written a review for anything before, but this one deserves it. I absolutely love this book and so does my husband. I never knew so much about hot dogs, as well as the many different ways that people eat them across the country. I have it sitting out so that everyone can see it, and normally that is the first thing they pick up when they come to my home. I definitely recommend this book to anyone, even those who don't like hot dogs will like this book. It is totally awesome.

Ms. Mercuri has outdone herself in providing a real reference on the history of the hot dog and how it became an icon of the American foodways. First off, you're going to need two copies of this book: one for the kitchen and one for your glove box. One for the kitchen and one for the road!

Becky Mercuri, as in all her other fine books, has once again gone above and beyond in her quest to document the historical authenticity, modern day excellence, and (with apologies to A.B.) just plane ol' good eats!

The Great American Hot Dog Book does for hot dogs what hot sauce did for the lowly chicken wing: it takes the common and turns it into the exceptional! No matter your station in life, you'll never be able to look down your nose at the hot dog ever again! The recipes that Ms Becky has researched, tested, and then included in this book will see to it that you won't!

She has done a great job of providing us with the knowledge and recipes that examine and celebrate the various regional differences and preferences for hot dogs across this great land of ours. This is a most interesting and fun book. Anything written by Becky Mercuri is excellent. I love reading about hot dog stands in various states and would never have thought that there could be so many ways to serve wieners. Some of the sauces sound delicious. It's been years since I have had a hot dog (not even at ball games) but I plan to use some of the recipes in this book very soon. My family agrees that "The Great American Hot Dog Book" is a very special book.

GREAT guide for a first-time buyer.......2006-07-31

My roommate works at the library and brought me home a dozen different books on how to go about buying your first home and what you would need to know (including the dummy/idiot books which I normally love). After taking a look at this one, I sent all the other ones back and ordered it from amazon because it is by far the easiest, most comprehensive, and overall helpful guide for a first-time buyer. It answers all questions and can just be used as a good reference. It's questions and answer format makes the book very easy to pick-up and less daunting-- some of the books seems like a giant boring novel!! I even gave this book as a gift to a friend considering buying a place of his own.

Good first book on buying a home.......2005-02-26

This is a basic book on home buying intended for the first time buyer. It's' fairly brief, only about 130 pages (minus the appendices), so it's a quick read. If you're a second time buyer it would probably be too basic for you, but I was looking for a quick primer before starting to read more technical books on investing in real estate.

It covers the essentials of mortgages, the bidding and negotiation process, working with agents and inspectors, the major government agencies that participate in the mortgage market, such as HUD, VA, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and so on. Although you don't need to understand it to purchase a house, the secondary market is briefly discussed so you'll know what that is when you hear real estate professionals mention the term.

Most of the information is quite practical, such as how to deal with real estate agents (don't let them act like mothers-in-law and let them decide what's best for you in the way of a house, no matter how well-meaning their intentions), and inspectors (don't insist on being present during the inspection, it'll just distract them).

After the chapters devoted to the mechanics of buying the house, there's a chapter basically on "What now?" After the happy glow of buying your first house wears off, you'll now have to face the reality of doing the required maintenance and repairs, keeping up the lawn and landscaping, making sure you save enough to pay taxes, and so on. There are even useful hints on how to conserve energy and how much you can save by having old furnaces and air conditioners replaced, and the author says hers paid for itself in about 18 months, although the initial cost was daunting (about $2500). But it was worth it over the long run.

Finally, there's a chapter on foreclosure and what to do if you find yourself in that situation. There's help available in that many cities or state government agencies can help with either grants, money or advice. The book also has a glossary, and two appendices of useful worksheets such as comparing house features and mortgage lenders, a HUD-1 worksheet, and a VA guaranteed loan application form.

The book is clearly and concisely written and should give anyone a basic understanding of the home buying process. After this I went on to reading more advanced books on investing in real estate and it was useful for getting the basic knowledge quickly and easily.

This is a classic real estate investing package by Carlton Sheets. The
package contains checklists and tips for buying/selling properties.
There are "nothing down deals" out there. For instance, an estate sale
may include a property sold at a deep discount to get fast cash. In this
instance, the loan value may be substantially more than the buyer is
paying.

i.e. A motivated seller offers a $300,000 home for $180,000. The buyer
and his/her appraiser verifies the value of the property and then takes the
appraisal to a bank for a loan at 80% value which turns out to be $240,000.
The buyer can purchase the home with $60,000 cash in hand. Then the
property can be resold or rented for an overall positive cash flow.

There are small things a property owner can do to increase value.
These include:
o exterior painting
o paneling and new tiles
o fence painting and repair
o gardening
o repair of concrete
o property accents i.e. solar lighting, brick barbeques etc.

It is important to purchase a property with at least one or more rentable
units to assist in paying the mortgage. The thrust of the work is that
the deals are out there; however, buyers must do the extensive property
research in order to place a fair valuation on the available deal(s).
After the valuation has been done and a fair cash flow has been proven,
the next hurdle is to overcome analysis paralysis. Some buyers tend
to over-analyze deals to the point where they disappear before a
conclusive decision can be made. Don't be one of these people.

Crazy Horse.......2006-11-03

The photography in this book is superb and looking at the photos makes one understand the plight of Crazy Horse and his people as they were being pushed out of and off of the land that they loved and held sacred.

I have visted many of the places in this book so the photos and the re-telling of the story of this fascinating man made this book a welcome addition to my library of books about the experience of the American Indians in the West.

Good photographs, but not much of a biography.......2001-11-18

Despite the obvious irony of a photographic biography of Crazy Horse-the man who eschewed the medium-Bill and Jan Moeller use a combination of photos and text, to re-tell his life story. They have compiled their own color photos, which comprise, not only pictures of battle sites and forts, but various landscapes on the Great Plains where Crazy Horse's people may have lived and traveled.

I enjoyed leafing through these beautiful photos of places I had been, and places I plan to visit. The Moellers have done a wonderful job of photographing striking landscapes, as with their photo of a rainbow arching over Scotts Bluff. (7) However, while this book works well as a themed photographic collection, as biography and history it falls short. It does not, as the authors hoped, "...add to the works on Crazy Horse and...provide the subject with an expanded dimension."(v) Instead they provide a very simplified and, by their own admission, biased version of Crazy Horse's life, which is more mythology than biography. Indeed, at times, the writing seems better suited to a young adult audience

I also found the photographs of battle sites rather disappointing. Not that they are not visually pleasing, like the markers on Custer Hill surrounded by golden grasses. (113) But the authors seem to favor the attractive landscape over views that enhance our understanding of what took place there. For example, at the site of the Wagon Box Fight, they chose to photograph the area just beyond the circle, where the hill begins to slope down. While this hill did figure prominently in the battle, a photograph of the wagon boxes, and the small area they enclosed would have given a much better idea of scale.

I was also disappointed in parts of the last chapter, "Life-and Death-at Camp Robinson." Included here, of course, are photos of the buildings that now stand on the site of the Guard House and Adjutant's Office, where Crazy Horse was wounded, and later died. The authors fail to mention, however, that these are not the original buildings, but reproductions, nor do they note that the original buildings looked somewhat different.

The Moeller's version of Crazy Horse's wounding is that, "Private William Gentles...lunged at Crazy Horse with his bayonet, plunging it deep into his right side."(139) Of course, there are as many versions of this event as there were eyewitnesses, and many say that Crazy Horse actually fell against the bayonet, making his wounding accidental. I would have preferred it if the Moellers had noted that there were other versions, and not stated theirs so definitively.

This is an attractive book for those who enjoy landscape photography or romantic images of the American West. However, those wishing for an expanded biography of Crazy Horse will find only a re-hash of the old myths.
