Book Description
Ron Maxwell, producer of the acclaimed movie Gettysburg and director of Gods & Generals, has encouraged the creation of this anthology that captures and explores one of the major themes of Gods & Generalsdevout, godly men and women on both sides of the Civil War fervently believed that their cause was not only just but that they enjoyed God's favor.
In addition to several articles contributed by Ron Maxwell and commentary from various Civil War experts, the book is comprised of a montage of letters, diary entries, articles, and observations from the people who participated in the conflict.
Customer Reviews:
More than a companion to the movie.......2007-08-09
Fans of this movie, and of Shaara's book, can appreciate this book as a companion piece, but it's far more than that. Faith and prayer carried Americans on both sides through the heartache of separation from loved ones, the savagery of the battlefield, the horror of prisoner of war camps. Any Christian can appreciate the stories of faith and hope that so characterized this tragic period of America's history, and benefit from the examples of honor and character that seem, sadly, to be lost among leaders today.
A must-have for fans of the movie and book, students of the period, and people of faith.
Excellent overview of Christian faith in the Civil War.......2003-07-29
Ted Baehr and Susan Wales have compiled this book that gives biographical sketches of just about every character in Ron Maxwell's film Gods and Generals. This book is unique in that it gives attention to how the Christian faith of these people influenced their lives, particularly during the war. It is written with brevity and is full of quotes from their letters. This book is important because a person's faith will influence what he does in life, to varying degrees. That is why I feel it is important to study this aspect of their character and to this end I am particularly grateful to Ted Baehr and Susan Wales for putting this book together. It will also serve as an introduction to many of these characters for the reader who may be studying these people for the first time. Each piece in this book has footnotes that will guide the reader to other sources that they can read if they would like to study a person or topic further. Ron Maxwell provides a very insightful foreward to this book in which he tells of his conviction to portray history accurately. The book has many nice photos from the film as well as photos and drawings from the Civil War era. 18 people contributed to this book, historian Gabor Boritt among them. Talk-show host and columnist Les Kinsolving contributed a piece on William Barksdale, to whom he is related. He also plays William Barksdale in Gods and Generals and Gettysburg. My favorite chapter is the one on Stonewall Jackson and his wife Anna. It is full of lengthy quotes from their letters to each other. The back of the book has an appendix that lists the cast of the film. It also has a note about each of the contributors to this book. By all means, get this book and keep it handy on your coffeetable. And get the Gods and Generals DVD to go with it.
Faith in Gods and Generals.......2003-07-27
Having published a review of the film "Gods and Generals," I found this book an interesting companion to it. This beautifully illustrated anthology provides insights into individuals caught up on both sides of the Civil War and how their faith guided them. The excellent Forword by Ron Maxwell is a must read. It makes a great gift book.
Some fascinating reading!.......2003-07-25
This book was written to be a companion of the 2003 movie, Gods and Generals. Covering many of the historical figures from that movie, the book tells about them, and particularly about their faith in God, and how that affected what they did. Filled with many great pictures and illustration, this book makes for some fascinating reading!
I must admit that I really enjoyed this book. The authors' contention that religious faith is usually given short shrift in most history book is spot on, and that does go along way to making this book practically unique! But, I must say that more is covered in this book than religious subjects; for example, one of my favorite stories told in the book is the story entitled "Grandmother's Quilt," which tells the story of a quilt and the love of two people.
Overall, I found this to be a great book! I highly enjoyed it, and I highly recommend it to you.
excellent addition to any historical, biographical library.......2003-05-28
Having read many Civil War histories and biographies, I was surprised to find much information I had never seen before on prominent, as well as lesser known characters from that period, particularly as it pertained to their spiritual lives. That issue is sometimes briefly touched upon, but never in such depth and personal details, many of which come from their own hand, including letters, diaries, etc. It also gives a lot of attention to what the women of the time were thinking, saying, and writing - something usually missing from most military biographies. It is very poignant to read the accounts from godly men on both sides of the conflict who at first believed that God was behind their cause, and then when victory was not as quick and certain as predicted, began to have doubts, and finally to conclude that ultimately, God was working through the conflict to bring about His own sovereign purpose which was far and above any human goal. Those who gave this book a negative review reveal their own bias and the reason why most authors leave this type of information out of their books. They view it as being insignificant to themselves, and therefore fail to understand the impact it has had throughout history.

A summing-up of medieval nobles.......2006-04-09
Even after buying this book, I'm still at a loss what it really is about, except that it contains a lot of names of medieval and pre-Christian nobles, who may be ancestors of Queen Elisabeth II. For example, the book contains the names of ancestors of the English Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, the French Queen Anne of Kiev and the Spanish King Alfonso V of Leon. It also contains a lot of names of members of the De Bohun and De Clare families. Another large chapter is about mythical Irish `Kings', including a Milesuis, who - according to the book - went to Egypt and met Pharaoh Nectonibus. His - according to the book - descendant Rothachtach was slain in 1357 BCE, while Rothachtach's grandson, Siorna Sadhalach, was - according to the book - "said to have lived 150 years until slain".
The included genealogical information is very brief. Each chapter is mainly a summing up of names. Some death dates and dates of reigns are included, but most have been left out. It's a complete mystery to me why mythical dates, like the ones above, have been included, while more reliable medieval dates have largely been left out. To make things worse, the text is in a very large font with large spacing between the lines, while the 86 (!) pages of index are in the same large font.
One is, of course, far better off with the German Schwennicke/Isenburg "Stammtafeln" books, but, alas, they are very expensive and hard to get at second-hand. So, if you're mainly interested in the medieval ancestry of the British Royals and don't mind about dates, you can give this book a try.
Book Description
This book is an attempt to trace and illuminate, through interviews with colleagues, friends, and contemporaries, different perspectives about Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
Customer Reviews:
Tawdry, lurid gossip.......2006-06-10
Chaos as Usual contains interviews from almost everyone in the Fassbinder pantheon. Unfortunately, they consist mostly of gossip and depictions of a disturbed individual. There is almost no insight into Fassbinder's art or creativity, nor much into his inner life, I feel. Stories of his debauched life and emotional terrorism are well-known, so much so that they provide a critical cliche. "Oh, Fassbinder, the cruel artist who manipulated his actors so." This merely diverts from the power that his films have. What use is this collection of chatter?
I must admit, however, that certain interviews provide some detail about his early involvement in Munich's theatre scene, but that's about the sum total. I can only recommend this for completists or masochists.
Word for Word.......2005-08-02
"Conversations" is less a critical analysis of Fassbinder's work and more a testimony to the sex, drugs, and scandalous mystique that surrounded him.
Witnesses include Hanna Schygulla, Michael Ballhaus, Juliane Lorenz and dozens more who were part of the Fassbinder inner circle.
Not a dull moment on this journey into the joy and terror of Fassbinder.

Description:
We investigate asset pricing dynamics in an adaptive evolutionary asset pricing model with fundamentalists, trend followers and a market maker. Agents can choose between a fundamentalist strategy at positive information cost or choose a trend following strategy for free. Price adjustment is proportional to the excess demand in the asset market. Agents asynchronously update their strategy according to realized net profits in the recent past. As agents become more sensitive to differences in strategy performance, the fundamental steady state becomes unstable and multiple steady states may arise. As the traders' sensitivity to differences in fitness increases, a bifurcation route to chaos sets in due to homoclinic bifurcations of stable and unstable manifolds of the fundamental steady state.

Book Description
On May 7, 1877, less than a year after his overwhelming victory at Little Big Horn, Crazy Horse, the charismatic Oglala Sioux whose name had become the epitome of Indian resistance to white encroachment, surrendered at Camp Robinson, Nebraska Territory. A young man of slight build and quiet ways dramatically at odds with his extraordinary influence and stature, he was viewed by the military as a potential civil leader of all Sioux.
What happened between May 15, 1877, when, anticipating a visit to the president in Washington, Crazy Horse was sworn in as a noncommissioned officer in the U.S. military, and September 5, 1877, when he was bayoneted in the back by a military guard, is the stuff of rumor and legend. And yet, reliable accounts of the last days of Crazy Horse do exist. The interviews collected in this book describe in stark detail the surrender and death of Crazy Horse from the perspective of Indian and mixed-blood contemporaries. Supplemented by military orders, telegrams, and reports, and rounded out with dispatches from numerous newspaper correspondents, these eyewitness accounts make up a unique firsthand view of the events and circumstances surrounding this tragic episode in Lakota history.
Customer Reviews:
In Death, Crazy Horse Comes to Life.......2003-02-22
I purchased this book since I am researching one of the army officers who witnessed the death of Crazy Horse, Officer-of-the- Guard Lt. Henry Lemly, who left behind an account that appeared in the New York Sun and is reproduced herein. I found that and much more. For anyone who is familiar with Hardorff's similar treatments of the Little Big Horn, CUSTER BATTLE CASUALTIES I and II, HOKAEHY! A GOOD DAY TO DIE, this work follows a familiar approach, compiling numerous Lakota accounts of the circumstances surrouding the famous warrior's death.
Beyond that, it is much, much. Many of the first-person accounts describe other aspects of the life of Crazy Horse--his appearance, deeds in battle, his demeanor, marriage, nicknames, family etc. All of this culminates with the recollections of his fatal wounding, how it happened, who was to blame, and the reaction of both the Lakota and the army. In other words, a treasure trove of biographical information on Crazy Horse that is far more instructional than any existing biography of him. The general reader should be warned that such accounts can be repetitious and certainly aren't as readable as, say, Stephen Ambrose's CRAZY HORSE AND CUSTER. If it is unedited first person recollections you are after though, you will find them here.
Two items of mystery especially surround the great warrior--was he ever photographed? (Hardorff is very skeptical of any such photographic claims), and where was he buried? On this last question, there are various accounts of his body being buried and then moved, etc. to the point that no one knew where he ultimately rested. There is even a photograph of his first burial site that I have never seen published before, showing an army-built wooden structure surrounding the temporary sepulcher of Crazy Horse's remains, erected on a bluff above Camp Sheridan, Nebraksa. The inclusion of such photographs and the many conflicting details of his burials make this a fascinating aspect of this book.
In all, an excellent source of information for anyone interested in Crazy Horse, the Lakota, the Little Big Horn and the frontier military.
A must to read for any serious student of Lakota history.......2001-06-10
The Death Of Crazy Horse: A Tragic Episode In Lakota History is a collection of interviews of Indian and mixed blood contemporaries of his last days between May 15, 1877, when he was sworn in as a noncommissioned officer in the U. S. military and September 5, 1877, when he was killed by a military guard, bayonetted in the back. Recollections and interviews are supplemented by a collection of official documents, including telegrams, military dispatches, newspaper accounts, and other eyewitness reports. Stark, bloody detail emerges quickly, along with complex shadows of views of the man known as Crazy Horse. The aspect of betrayal and fear of this charismatic, modest young Oglala Sioux man is underlined again and again. A dark fascination arises from the accumulated documents.
What was the cause of the martyrdom? One response comes from the newspaper account in The New York Sun, dated September 14, 1877, titled "The Death of Crazy Horse:" Crazy Horse's father is quoted as saying 'His boy...would never have fought the whites, but they (the military) hunted him and his village in their own country, and they had to defend themselves, all would have perished. He had enough buffalo in that country to last several years, and (he) wanted to stay. He fought only the Crows and Snakes and stole their ponies. But he was not left alone. Every courier that came North to him said,"Come in! Come in! Or the Gray Fox (Crook) will drive you after Sitting Bull!: At last he came. Spotted Tail and Red Cloud, the greatest chiefs of the Brules and the Oglalas, had to stand aside and give him the principal place in council, and on this account they and their young men became jealous. They were the cause of his poor boy lying there. He was killed by too much talk. He had said (p. 243).'
The Death Of Crazy Horse has a documentary quality. Though brief, less than 300 pages, its impact is gut-wrenchingly huge. It will take more than one reading of even these few pages to construct a new truthful understanding of the end of this man's life. Though events described are often brutal, the information is presented in a tone of respect. Additional informational details such as the genealogy of Crazy Horse, in Appendix C, and the description of Crazy Horse from the Campbell letters help enflesh the image of the man. There is a hard, painful beauty about this book. The Death Of Crazy Horse: A Tragic Episode In Lakota History is a must to read for any serious student of Lakota history.

Primary sources at your fingertips.......2001-05-14
Like The Killing of Chief Crazy Horse this book comprises various interviews with individuals who knew Crazy Horse or were present at his death. However there is no repetition here. Those accounts that are by the same people, have different dates (which, in itself makes for interesting comparisons). This book also includes valuable additions such as telegrams between the various officers involved--giving us the true picture of what their plans for Crazy Horse actually were--and many newspaper accounts, showing just how important an event this was throughout the country.
Anyone who has studied this period knows the controversy that rages over Crazy Horse and his death. Was he the quiet man beloved by his band and betrayed by the agency chiefs out of jealousy? Or was he sullen and withdrawn, plotting a return to the warpath, and stopped just in time? What you find in these pages, as you would expect, is that the answer depends largely on who is doing the telling. E!ven the physical descriptions of this man, of whom no photo exists, vary greatly. Some say he was tall. Most say he was slight. Some call him handsome. One man said he was downright ugly. The only agreement seems to be on his unusually light hair and complexion.
This book is not recommended for someone who is not already familiar with the story of Crazy Horse. However, for those who are, it provides access to some great primary sources, that you will probably want to re-read many times.

Book Description
When Congress enacted Social Secuirty in 1935, with the age of retirement set at age 65, average life expectancy was 62 years. By the time Medicare was enacted 30 years later, life expectancy had risen to age 70. Since the enactment of Medicare, life expectancy has risen to age 76 today and may be expected to increase further in the decades to come. Clearly, the increase in post-retirement life expectancy has significant implications for the level of national expenditures attributable to an aging population. One of the approaches suggested as a solution to the so-called income transfer problem is to redefine old age, that is, to push retirement and its associated benefits off to a later age. This would effectively increase the size of the workforce, with older workers continuing to contribute their payroll taxes for an extended period of time. The critical question Sicker poses is, will there be enough appropriate employment opportunities for a growing number of older workers in the workforce of the future? The evidence for a positive response is far from clear or compelling. Sicker examines the prospective place of the aging worker in the employment environment of the 21st century in light of the restructuring of American business and the world of work in the final decades of the last century. In doing so, he raises serious concerns about the validity and utility of some of the neoclassical economic ideas and assumptions that have become part of the conventional wisdom of our time. Sicker contends that these dubious propositions have unwittingly contributed signficantly to the problem through their manifestation in public policy. However, the principal focus of his analysis is not on economic theory as such, but on the realities and uncertainties that an aging American workforce will face in the decades to come. This book is significant reading for scholars, researchers, and the general public interested in labor force and aging policy issues.

The Man.......2000-06-03
To the Manner Born; The Life of General William H. T. Walker was a pleasure and joy to read. Especially after discovering that William H. T. Walker is a forgotten American hero. Before the civil war Walker's heroics were known thoughout the United States. Zacary Taylor, President of the United States in the mid 1800's, named Walker "the man", after serving with Walker in the Florida Indian War, and later in the Mexican American War. Walker beleived in honor and duty to his country, right or wrong, and served his country to the best of his ability. The civil war took more than Walkers life, it took his legacy. Many may call Walker a bigot, who was involved in wars that we would rather forget. The book shows that the drama of his life and the way he lived it may still come calling, if only as a whisper. Walker was shot three times in the indian war and thought dead. Then a few years later he was shot three more times in the Mexican American War and left for dead on the battle field. He was gut shot and thirsty, and through a hail of gunfire Walker calmly drank his fill. When the civil war came along Walker chose to side with his home state of Georgia. He was passed over by Jefferson Davis, and not offered a major command. It was clear Davis feared the popularity of Walker, and did all he could to keep Walker from gainning new fame. The book is fresh, wise, and well written, about a forgotten American hero that you may never forget.

True Brady Bunch Fans Might Want To Think Twice Before Reading This.......2007-02-02
The fact that there were some laughs in this book and it was interesting and well-written has to be balanced against the reality that tell-alls like this damage the nice fantasy that The Brady Bunch has been for thirty-some years. I don't mean to put Barry Williams down but I sort of wish I'd never read this book with its unhappy revelations and...too much information.
A walk through Bradyland.......2007-01-16
I really enjoyed listening to the audio version of Growing Up Brady: I Was a Teenage Greg by Barry Williams. It reminded me of how much I enjoyed watching the show while growing up. It was nice to hear that the kids were a "normal" group of kids in an abnormal situation-- which is possibly how they avoided many of the problems of other child stars, and also nice to hear that even though there were squabbles, the kids pretty much got along together and that they still think of each other as family. This is a very enjoyable book!
Even With It's Flaws I Still Love This Book!.......2006-01-04
I love The Brady Bunch, it is one of my favorite classic sitcoms and I bought and read Barry Williams Book, Growing Up Brady and I loved his stories, his accounts of playing Greg Brady and the episode guides, etc. Okay so there are some factual mistakes in the episode guides but the book was a fun and interesting read about one of the greatest family sitcoms of all time and I highly recommend it to all Brady Bunch fans and if you liked this book I also recommend the BradyMania Book by Elizabeth Moran. Gowing Up Brady and Brady Maina are both fun books!
About the many mistakes in the ep guide.......2005-10-09
Williams apparently mentions Tank Gates as being a boyfriend from Carol's college days. Actually Tank was from Carol's HIGH SCHOOL era! Dozens of other mistakes in this worthless, ill researched trash.
Great buy!.......2005-08-30
Brady Bunch fans will love this book. You get behind the seens details that you never new before. If you want to know what went on off the set, this will tell you about things that you could never find on the internet. Great book. I recommend this to all Brady fans out there.

No dissappointment. Very entertaining and revealing........1998-12-07
Barry Williams comes through with the gritty goods on the off-set romances between the on-set Brady kids! Also, lots of interesting and revealing tid-bits about the show and the cast. Williams's honest, no-holds-barred discussion of his early professional experiences is also entertaining. One disappointment is that the audio version doesn't address "Cyndi's near drowning in Hawaii". Nor does Williams' address some of the more controversial personal issues (revealed in the tabloids) of some of his castmates. But all in all, a resounding thumbs up!
