                          4 out of 5 stars Accurate FACTS.......2006-03-07

Unlike the biography of himself entitled "4 Years in the Saddle" whereas Colonel Gilmor elaborates maybe a little too much on his triumphs and set backs personally, this book gives a more accurate account of the 4 years of struggle for this Maryland native who went south to fight. I have read both books and find Mr Ackinclose's version much easier to read and more factual based on the actual history from that era. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars purchase of a NPO book.......2007-10-11

The status of the book is alright, nothing to mention about that. About the shipping either, since it came all the way from oversea. This book gives just basic information and only usefull literature for the US, but still I estimate it's value as quite usefull especially for the first steps of your non profit org. Though it lacks of the connection between small, very local and nation wide operating n.p.o. First steps are wonderfully described, then nothing till you have your own board of directors and couple of departments under you. Therefore i can truely recommand this book of Hummel for beginners, for organisations in their childhood, because when you grow the rest will come anyway with your own experiences and a little help of this book's literature.

4 out of 5 stars Journeyman Survey of the Topic.......2007-02-24

I found the book useful, particularly for larger foundation type organizations with a mainstream charitable mission. Not as useful for smaller charities that do not have a large board of directors or advocacy\education types of nonprofits. I felt I got my money's worth, but had to read between the lines a bit to apply the information to my particular organization.

5 out of 5 stars A useful introduction for the dreamer..........2003-02-17

I thought this was a great book for introducing the basic steps involved in starting a non-profit organization. It clarified some simple issues for me. I have ZERO experience in starting a non-profit organization and wanted to get an idea of what it takes to do so, and this book was a great starting point, although you will clearly want to move on to more "meaty" books if you actually get your organization off the ground. After a few hours, I had solid drafts of my mission statement, articles of incorporation, and bylaws, and I knew what I needed to do next. It might be too simplistic for large organizations, but it was perfect for my itty bitty dream!

                                    1 out of 5 stars Duh!.......2001-06-26

Talk about restating the obvious! The author reminds you that when you're about to hire somebody it would be a good idea to interview them rather than rely on their resume. Under the subtitle "goals" of the organization we are told that goals are the intended outcomes of what you intend to do. Gosh, that's a pithy insight! I should have known not to buy a book by an academic, as opposed to somebody who actually ran a non-profit in the real world!

                                    3 out of 5 stars Very informative.......1999-12-10

This book was extremely helpful. However, it was not as good as the book by Ted Nicholas. The information contained in this book is a valuable resource tool and should be an addition to your professional library-compliments the book by Nicholas extremely well.

5 out of 5 stars Every nonprofit needs this book.......2004-02-20

Two of the nonprofit associations I work with have been struggling with QuickBooks for years - now the struggle is over. QuickBooks is the only affordable software for small organizations, but what we spend on accountant's fees to interpret and straighten out the QuickBooks reports is probably more than high-cost software would have cost. With this book, we learned how to adapt QuickBooks so it works much better for nonprofit associations. The information we can get is amazing, we never before had such a clear understanding of our finances, and our sources of donations.

This book is so clearly written, and so filled with information about "how to do it right", that it should be a required purchase for every small nonprofit association that's formed.

Blessings on Kathy Ivens for this treasure of a book!

The tragedy and resulting tempest of September 11, 2001 forever changed the global scope and mechanics of nonprofit organizations in the US and around the world. In the aftermath of this tragedy, the nonprofit world changed forever and all nonprofits found themselves the focus of attention from the government, the media and the public at large. Muslim nonprofits found themselves under intense scrutiny with their operations being under a cloud of suspicion. Unfortunately, a number of large Muslim charities were closed administratively on the basis of what many in the Muslim and Arab community consider weak evidence or no evidence of wrongdoing and without due process. There is a need to educate the public on the concept of Muslim charity, on how Muslim charities operate and to offer a guide on how to operate a successful charity that is professional, open and transparent. Visualizing this need, Dr. Khalil Jassemm, one of the leading figures in the Muslim and Arab NGO sector with more than 15 years of experience, offers the reader a comprehensive guide for understanding Islamic charity and for running a successful nonprofit in the US. By taking the reader through an overview of the concept and significance of charity in Islam in a comparative context and the primary phases of founding, organization, management and practice, this book addresses important issues facing nonprofit organizations operating in the post-9/11 world. Charity work is not simple work. To many in the lay public, charity work is perceived as simply accepting donations and giving that money away. To professionals, it is about properly acquiring the donation, managing it, spending it, and publicizing the work. This book will be an invaluable nonprofit organizational and management reference tool, while also providing a comparative perspective on the act of Islamic charity. Regardless of mission type, this text will provide guidance for all nonprofits to becoming more professional and effective. Thought-provoking and groundbreaking, Islamic Perspective on Charity: A Comprehensive Guide for Running a Muslim Nonprofit in the US is essential reading for anyone interested in learning about the Islamic perspective on charity, how Muslim organizations operate in the US, and how to run a successful nonprofit. We hope for two outcomes from reading this book. We hope this book would make the general reader an informed donor that is aware of Muslim charities and their work, and we pray that this book would be a refresher course to professionals in this field to improve their knowledge and skills.

Orphaned into the household of her Aunt Reed at Gateshead, subject to the cruel regime at Lowood charity school, Jane Eyre none the less emerges unbroken in spirit and integrity. How she takes up the post of governess at Thornfield Hall, meets and loves Mr Rochester and discovers the impediment to their lawful marriage are elements in a story that transcends melodrama to portray a woman's passionate search for a wider and richer life than that traditionally accorded to her sex in Victorian society.

I loved the cover to this book. It is a nice shelf book, something to keep in your living room bookshelf. I would order more of these books.

I read this book for my book club. I had a hard time with it because of the injustice yet it was all so thought provoking. I am thankful I read it but it was a hard read. The others in my group thought it was excellent, so you will just have to read it to decide how you feel about it. Worth the money and time spent reading!

5 out of 5 stars The best classic I've ever read.......2007-10-07

I finished reading this book about a week ago, and I've never been able to get it completely out of my mind since, particularly the wonderfully charismatic and passionate Mr. Rochester. (I'll get to him later, though) This is only the second novel I've read that has a main protagonist that is quite similar to me in personality, which is refreshing in itself. (Most novels have spirited, strong-willed people as the main character--not that it's wrong, it just gets boring after around 500 readings.) I identify with Jane because in many ways, for she acts and reacts as I would in her situation. And Mr. Rochester....I fell in love with him with the first chapter I read (which was Chapter 27; I cheated) and have not stopped since. *Sigh, Giggle*
These characters are so brilliantly drawn out--no other classic has done a better job of making me feel as if these characters are dynamic people.
The prose sparkles--especially Mr. Rochester's, who I find has the gift of turning me into a pile of mush.
In short, this is the best classic I've ever read, and the only one that I will definitely read over again and again and again.....(The only one that came close was Pride and Prejudice) No other story has made feel as this one did--this gothic story of passion and love captivates me and will continue to do so.
P.S. The only problem I had with Jane's character is when my darling Edward is singing to her, and she is fairly unaffected. I was sobbing on the floor and yelling at Jane at why she was not doing the same thing. Any one else feel the same way?
PPS: Some people might say that she is strong and strong-willed, but she is not. Rather, she is strong-principled. She does not have to have her own way, but when it comes to God's way, she is more spirited about it.
PPPS: And I am not Dwight Rhodes. I'm his daughter. Couldn't you tell?

1 out of 5 stars This book sucks.......2007-08-26

This book sucks. This is the worst piece of filth I've ever read in my short life. Jane Eyre is a big pansy. Mr. Rochester is compensating.

3 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected - A Bit Dull And Wordy.......2007-06-21

A young girl is orphaned as a baby and is entrusted to her uncle and his family. When her uncle dies, it falls to her aunt to provide her care. Unfortunately, her aunt despises the young girl and eventually finds a way to send the young girl away. The young girl, Jane Eyre, enters a boarding school for girls of less significant means and it is there she can truly begin to take charge of her life and where her adventures, so to speak, begin.

Jane Eyre did catch me up immediately and keep me involved through the first half of the book. It moved fairly quickly. However, I thought the story dragged a bit about halfway and throughout the second half. Personally, I found the book suffered from what most Romance era and Gothic writers had an affinity for: why use 5 words when 15 or 20 will do. The novel became wordy and overlong at times and I found myself putting it down for long periods of time. Quite frankly, I think the story is better told in the myriad of movies that have been released. I am quite at a loss as to exactly why this novel is such the classic it is.

The character of Jane Eyre bothered me as well, but I think she was more truthfully written and my dislike reflects the wordy nature of the book. Jane is morally strong - and that is to be admired - but she is so emotionally cold - I never imagined her being "in love," passionate or otherwise. Even though she states she is in love, there seems to be no passion or fire. What an oddly matched pair! Though, I get the same feelings when I read Jane Austen, so perhaps readers of Ms. Austen's novels will appreciate this one.

This novel is not all terrible, despite what I've said. It is engaging, though I think parts can be skimmed. Those who absolutely adore Gothic romance will love it. Those of us who find Gothic romance dull and dreary will find this novel less than enchanting.

5 out of 5 stars loved this book.......2007-06-08

In highschool I was assigned Jane Eyre to read & only read the clift notes, even that was interesting enough to bring me back to the book later in the summer when I had more time. It is considered a romance by many people but It's nothing like the little paperbacks that tennybopper girls read. It is a truly interesting book. I never know if I will like the "classics" or not (some just bore me to tears) but this one is a classic for a reason. It's one of the few books I've gone back & read twice. Love it, it takes you on a journey.

                                                  Book Description

Arthur Miller has been delivering powerful drama to the stage for decades with such masterpieces as Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, and A View from the Bridge. But, remarkably, no one has yet told the full story of Miller's own extraordinary life-a rich life, much of it shrouded from public view. To achieve this groundbreaking portrait of the artist and the man, the award-winning drama critic and biographer Martin Gottfried masterfully draws on his interviews, on Miller's voluminous lifelong correspondence, and on the annotated scripts and notebooks that reveal Miller's creative process in stunning detail. From Miller's childhood and adolescence in Depression-era New York City to the 1947 play All My Sons that established him as a voice to be reckoned with...from his heroic defiance of the House Un-American Activities Committee during the McCarthy years to his most unlikely pairing with Marilyn Monroe: Here is a highly acclaimed book that is "compulsively readable" ( Booklist, starred review).

There are 2 factual errors in this book. "Anna Christie" was NOT written by August Strindberg, and John Kennedy was not shot and klilled on November 23. Mess up things that a high school kid should be able to catch, and it casts doubt on other things.

It doesn't mean the book isn't a good read, but how could such obvious errors make it into print? And why is wife #3 of such little focus? She was married to the man for 40 years! More than the other two combined.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better books from an uneven biographer.......2005-03-24

This is one of the best of Gottfried's books that I have read since the oversized Broadway Musicals volume of the '70s. I found his Fosse book exploitative and his life of Danny Kaye defensive.

Miller was once the ultimate playwright and perhaps unique as one known as a personality. Gottfried walks a sword's edge between academic appreciation of his works and biographical information, highlighting the places where one informs the other.

The book is the poorer because Miller chose not to cooperate with its biographical aspects. Thus, the title is a little unbalanced (it should almost be: His life and WORK). It also shares with the author's otherwise classy biography of George Burns the unavoidable flaw of having been written before the subjects death. You can see Gottfried straining a bit for an ending on the last page--how to tie up the mysteries of his subject into a neat little paragraph?

But this makes engaging reading for theatre-goers, and is highly recommended for struggling playwrights, actors, etc.

4 out of 5 stars A definitive work on an important but not Promethean figure.......2004-06-14

Arthur Asher Miller is famous, as this book's back cover sums up, for three things: his own body of work, his defiance of the House Un-American Activities Committee in the mid-1950s, and his marriage to "the most famous of movie stars" (Gottfried's quote), namely Marilyn Monroe.

In his own country, Miller is, also as Gottfried says, unappreciated to the point of scorn. My only disappointment with this work-and it is a fine book-is that he does not explore this aspect of Miller's relationship to the "vox populi", whom his work, like that of Rockwell and Springsteen, is supposed to relate to. My own observation is that one's attitude to Miller-as playwright, as 'Mr.Marilyn Monroe', as human being-often is, like an artificial horizon indicator of one's own sociopolitical attitudes. Those listing to port will invariably uphold Miller as the great conscience of his generation whilst those heading starboard will dismiss him pretty perfunctorily as merely another "Intellectual", in the vein of those figures of derision Paul Johnson deftly skewers in his volume of that title.

Actors, or those considering themselves as such, place Miller's work on a great pedestal, and the technical merits of his work are considerable and generally undisputed. However,Miller's sense of life, so to speak, is not essentially noble, but essentially fatalist and indifferent.

Miller, personally, despite his wealth, critical success, and longevity-he's still working at 88-is not a figure one wants to view sympathetically, and I certainly do not. He left his first wife and ran off with a very public movie star whom he had ample reason to know would be very high maintenance, and, like an intricately built exotic car in the hands of a teenager, didn't maintain her well at all. While it's certain he had no direct involvement in her death, he was something of a negligent husband who failed to effectively deal with her dependencies on barbituates and psychoanalysis, and tormented her for her indiscretions with Yves Montand despite the fact that he'd done the same thing whilst she was married to Joe DiMaggio. To rub salt into the wounds, as percieved by the American public, he failed to attend her funeral and then proceeded to write a play (After the Fall)in which an unmistakably Monroe-alter-ego character is dealt with cruelly. Make no mistake, there are many theatre-goers who flatly hate Arthur Miller.

Many of those will snort with indignation when they read, in this volume for perhaps the first time, that Miller's son (with third wife Inge Morath) was born with Down''s syndrome and perfunctorily institutionalized, or Miller's unprovoked attack on a journalist in 1995-inasmuch as he was 80 at the time, however, many may more disdain the journalist (a healthy male in his early thirties) for "not besting the old Bolshevist", as one conservative commentator said.

Ultimately, it's his work that will either uphold Miller as the great playwright-of his nation, of his century, even,as one actor avers in this book, along with Shakespeare,of his species-or merely an important but not overarching writer, and such grand judgments are only plausible many years, even decades, after one's death. While it's clear Gottfried believes the former to be the case, and I believe the latter, one virtue of his book is that I still can concede its excellence without endorsing the notion of Miller as the ultimate in any aspect, save that which appears on the back cover: as a concomitantly commercially successful, politically controversial, and romantically conspicuous celebrity at a noteworthy time and place.

Arthur Miller, once the ultimate celebrity.
