The best part of this book comes not from the letters of Daniel Chisholm, but from Sgt. Samuel Clear, who was in the same Company as the Chisholm brothers were. His day to day entries during 1864-65 are the real deal. Pragmatic, prosaic and utterly without pretension, Sgt. Clear comes across as a decent and likable soldier.
Think of this book as a 19th-century weblog followed by 19th-century emails and you'll see how life as a soldier hasn't changed much emotionally. Modern-day soldiers will nod their heads sympathetically reading these flashes from history.

                Book Description

Vacation properties are not just for the elite and wealthy!

If you were a rich man… Stop right there! Just because you’re not rich doesn’t mean you don’t want a second home to get away from life as you know it. Whether you dream of living on the beach with sand between your toes or getting away from civilization in a mountain cabin, you don’t have to be a Rockefeller to enjoy your dream home.

In Profit From Your Vacation Home Dream: The Complete Guide to a Savvy Financial and Emotional Investment, vacation home buying expert Christine Hrib Karpinski shows you how to not only make your vacation home dream a reality, but to get others to pay your mortgage when you’re not enjoying your home away from home. By renting your vacation home using Karpinski’s recipe for successful vacation home ownership, you will soon be on the road to buying, enjoying and profiting from your second, third – and even fourth home.

Karpinski will show you how to: •Evaluate the different types of vacation properties and weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each. •Determine how many weeks you need to rent your home and how much you can charge to break even. •Become a master at managing real estate transactions –from negotiating the purchase price to maintaining the property – from the comfort of your hometown. •Determine if renting-by-owner or working with a property management company is right for you.

1 out of 5 stars Same as previous book, just as weak.......2007-07-31

This book is as weak as the last book. Unfortunately, my wife bought both of her books without reading the reviews. Big mistake...
I read the book and it was basically a re-hash of her old book. It looks like she has quite a marketing arm behind her now though, as she is working for one of the big vacation rental websites now. Go figure. I guess they are making her publish the same junk, but with their spin on it. I also noticed that all of the super positive reviews for this book seem pretty fake and contrived. Watch out!

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for first timers.......2007-07-29

Great read if you are thinking of buying or have just purchased a second home.

Great way to make money and enjoy life. I also enjoyed the book titled, "World Ventures, Wayne Nugent, Mike Azcue, Dan Stammen, Robert Oblon, Wesley Melcher, Marc Accetta."

3 out of 5 stars Mostly the same as her first book - Don't buy both.......2006-08-30

Having read Christine's first book "How to Rent Vacation Properties by Owner," I was pleased to find that she had written another. After reading the Amazon description, the author's bio and the acknowledgements in the front of the book, I was sure that it was a sequel to the first book. Amazon even has a co-marketing deal where you can buy both books.

I was greatly disappointed to find that most of the info in the book - down to the examples and quotes she uses - came straight out of the first book. Many of these were word-for-word. There's a few new ideas, but this really should have been marketed as a 2nd edition of "How to Rent Vacation Properties by Owner" than as her second book.

In fairness to Christine, I have to say that the content of the book is still great. I just wish it wasn't a near replica of the first!

5 out of 5 stars Provides the basics on how such a home can pay for itself when not in use by its owners.......2006-02-07

Owners of a home who dream of owning a second home for vacation purposes might have thought of the possibility as a dream for the rich, but Profit From Your Vacation Home Dream: The Complete Guide To A Savvy Financial And Emotional Investment tells otherwise: it holds the potential of being a wise move on several fronts, and provides the basics on how such a home can pay for itself when not in use by its owners. From how to rent a vacation home to a formula for successful vacation home ownership, this tells how to evaluate properties, weigh pros and cons, determine what's needed to break even on the investment, and even how to work with property management companies.

I saw Mr. Cain speak at a seminar recently and he had some good pointers so I figured it was worth the low cost to buy this book. Wrong.

There is not a thing in this book that a reasonably intelligent person would not come up with on their own. The book is 197 pages of large type and 56 pages of that is nothing more than a list of Coldwell Banker offices - as if we're not smart enough to look that up on the Internet. Oh yeah, there is "Directory of Other Resources" (other than Coldwell Banker) to keep it balanced. That's a one-page list of companies that are affiliated with Coldwell Banker.

This is nothing but an informercial in print. Shame on you, Coldwell Banker!

Are you tired of dry matter of-fact reading when it comes to homesteading or related books? This book is easy to read, informative, and yet funny. The author has a great sense of humor, but at the same time give practical information on what to look for when buying a place in the country. The book discusses first, whether or not a move to the country is your ideal dream. He then describes places to avoid moving to, and what to expect once you have moved. The book has important information on demographics, states with watertables, high crime states, eco-zones, etc.. The book is very useful and the author gives information from bureaus to write to in order to get further information on a particular state you are considering moving to. Overall, I highly recoomend this book, it won't show you how to milk a cow, but it is a very useful tool in starting your search for the ideal country property of your dreams.

I have been planning a move to the country for a few years now and have collected a number of books. It was not until I got this book that my plans are beginning to solidify. It has a lot of very practical advice mixed in with humour that makes it a treasure on my bookshelf. It is a must for anyone who is planning that "back to the land" move

                5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......1996-06-03

This is one of the most useful books that I own! I found it humorous, extremely well researched and answered all my questions about finding MY ideal country home

It has been said that in listening to John Denver sing, a vibration is felt which reaches deep into the soul and heart of those who are open to the message-the message of peace on Earth, of caring and sharing with each other as a family of man.

John Denver is a candle that lights the way. His message to us is simple; you do what you can do. It can be as simple as picking up the litter you see as you walk along the street, or to see the beauty of a sunset and share it with your child. It doesn't have to be something big, yet if each of us does something every day to reach out to those around us, we are making a difference. There have been numerous print and television media stories about him since his death, yet none have delved so deeply into the spirit of John Denver. He was more than a singer and songwriter, John was a communicator. . . speaking for so many of us through not only his songs, but also in the way he lived his life. To understand the man, we must look at his life closely: Whom did he consider his mentors and teachers? What were his spiritual beliefs? What gave John the strength to continue in the face of his own personal adversities? What books did John read? A Mountain in The Wind calls to each of us, it is more than a biography of John Denver; it can also be a blueprint for transformation.

2 out of 5 stars Distracting and disappointing.......2002-10-30

John Denver was many things to many people, to some a happy camper whose view on the world was Far OUT! While to others Denver was a visionary, someone who inspired others to look more deeply into their values, their world and do something proactive about it. Although MS Smith attempts to explain Mr. Denver's spirituality, the book is more "her" take on spirituality than Mr. Denver's. It's also distracting to find out that Ms. Smith never knew Mr. Denver personally so how can she claim to represent his views? After reading it I wondered why I'd wasted my time reading this. Rather than read this book buy more of John Denver's later cds from the 80s onward and discover his spiritual beliefs through his lyrics for yourself.

2 out of 5 stars A Mediocre Result with Great Intent.......2002-10-17

You'd have to be a pretty dedicated JD fan to like this book. It clearly has positive intent and there's no question the "Everyman" approach John Denver took to his own spirituality was appealing to a broad audience. This book just "misses" in so many ways that it's a difficult read.

1 out of 5 stars It is a CREEPY waste of time and money..................2002-10-14

This book is more about idol worship then it is about John Denver. I had been looking forward to reading this, but unfortunately from the moment I began I only became more and more disappointed and uncomfortable. The author moves away from the humanness of the artist and focuses on creating a picture of someone that we seem to be expected to worship as a deity rather than appreciate as a humanitarian. John Denver was a committed and conscientious believer in the goodness of the human spirit. I think you will find his philosophy is best represented in the tableau of his own music. Truly, it would seem a much better place to go to understand his spirituality.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Vision of Life.......2002-07-27

Christine Smith's "A Mountain in the Wind", is a wonderful piece of literature that finally comes along and unbiasly expresses the essence of what John Denver and his music were all about. It's not about the celebrity; it's not about the man; and it's not about his personal and daily habits, practices, or patterns of living. If that is what people are seeking then his autobiography would be a better place to start (entitled "Take Me Home", also available from Amazon.com). And, for those seeking to find a written, proverbial "signature" of John and his life, this is quite simply not a book for the "fans" but rather a book for the seeker and the believer of truth. This book takes a deep and serious glimpse into the essence of the spirit and the nature of all that encompassed John's beliefs, as we all should believe, about life and what is so about living. It's more than just getting up in the morning and going to work each day, or singing a song on stage, or doing a television show or political speech. It's more than a part time renewal or commitment. It's about "being", an inner lifestyle and mindset that radiates love and gratitude for all living things, and towards the world as a whole. It's about a lifelong process of development, growth and change that leads to the natural awareness of who and what we are. It's about the happiness of being human, the sharing of each other for the good of all, and it's about the success and failures of the heart. It's about silence and feeling, empathy and honesty. And, ultimately, it's about freedom; the freedom that means we are all one body, one song in the vastness of the cosmos, created in the image of God with nature as our example, our guide, and our nurturing life force. It is a narrative that enlightens and inspires, from the many examples of his music, his thoughts, and his actions, the deepest principles that took a lifetime for John Denver to discover about his fellow man (including himself), our world, and the meaning of life; things he was still learning even at the time of his tragic death. And, from John's examples, Christine marvelously captures a diversity of spirituality that characterizes the natural and unwritten language known only by the soul, which understands the ways and means of a higher order of awareness about existence. And, she translates this non-corporeal and timeless belief system quite eloquently into a language we can all relate to and understand. Finally, from the pages of this wonderful, philosophical and poetic narrative, we too can learn and/or put meaning to those feelings and beliefs within us all for which the end result will enable us to focus more distinctly on our own future and life in hopes that we too will foster the same marvelous paradigm that John Denver exemplified each and every day. With certainty, his music displayed it most giftedly. He was a man with deep convictions of love towards his fellow brothers and sisters and all that exists in the world, and was a wonderful inspiration to us all. We are all ONE", and all of us can believe as John did, and be called to action for change. We are not alone in our lives and wanderings, and we all possess the innate power to give of ourselves freely and unconditionally to each other, and to our world. As the superbly chosen title so eloquently testifies, "a mountain in the wind" means balancing adversity, individuality, and oneness with the struggles of life and the essence of existence that helps to maintain a togetherness as a family; like a mountain [range] in the wind -- strong and unwavering in spite of frailties. Thus, within each of us dwells, yet only a few ever choose to exercise, the intrinsic capacity to be, "A Mountain in the Wind."

                      1 out of 5 stars garbage.......2002-07-15

I'm a die hard John Denver fan, so it would be very hard to displease me. This book does. I know much more about JD's philosophy, and I've done no research and only shook his hand a few times....The book is so full of praise you would think this man is Christ....I had to throw up it is so sweet.

                      5 out of 5 stars Brave revelation.......2004-04-24

Rita has shared a true life story. It is a brave revelation of the many twists of life. There are many lesson one picks up througout the book. To look at life with a broad, unselfish view while valuing every drop in the ocean of time is one. Every life event has a purpose, and one must have faith in the way life unfolds itself. Her presentation is truly pictureque --from Rajasthan in India to Africa and multi-cultural Canada.

5 out of 5 stars Survival and Sacrifice.......2004-01-23

Wow! An amazing story of survival and sacrifice. This extraordinarily personal story is written in a simple yet eloquent style that provides a window directly into the heart of a woman dealing with unbearable emotional confines in her life.

It is both an awful story of an oppressive and controlling man and awesome story of a woman's struggle for emotional and spiritual freedom for herself and her children. And it is the story of an Indian woman's struggle to reconcile her own identity within traditional Indian culture and with family expectations about her role in marriage and in life.

Read this book if you want to be astounded...and then inspired!

                      4 out of 5 stars Rita's Journey.......2003-12-14

Rita's book is about her journey; an idyillic child hood living in
exotic locations, her horrific first few months of marriage, her attempt
to escape, her immigration to Canada, her constant quest to placate her
violent and unstable husband, her carrer success, her wonderful children
and the most unimaginable tragedy anyone can ever experience.

Her story has a universal appeal which crosses cultural and economic
boundaries. My admiration for her has no bounds, because she has
survived and is willing to share her story to celebrate her son and to
                      reach out to women.

5 out of 5 stars Suffering and Redemption.......2003-12-04

This is a true story of love, abuse, suffering, tragedy, forgiveness, redemption and closure. When I began reading this book, I was not able to put it down until I had finished it.

This is a memoir. If you are living through, or have lived through, family violence, or simply know someone in that situation, then this book may be very helpful. It grew out of Rita's own need to come to terms with these horrific events in her life. She has since also become active in providing support and counseling to others who are suffering or have suffered domestic abuse.

Be warned: the violence that the author and her family endured is graphically described. But it is not gratuitous violence. The violence was real, personal and even fatal for some members of Rita's family. That it occurred in a middle class family in a middle class neighborhood in a major North American city provides a hint of the pain that may be only one friend or family away from each of us.
