A Great Resource.......2003-08-02
This book, published in 1997, predicts on page 27, "The economy will start to sputter" and "Interest rates could head lower". Both of these were great predictions at a time that the economy was still booming! Great insights for retirement planning, along with tables and work-sheets to help individual plans. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Outdated Book.......2003-02-07
This book is very outdated. The housing market had drastically changed in Spain since this book was written. Even the amounts in the book are in pesetas and not in Euros.
I can not agree with the description of the Spaniards in the book, either. I have traveled to Spain many times and I think people and the whole country is much different than it is described in the book. There is too much negativity in this book. This book is written mainly for Brits. Once you finish the book you may want to say Long Live the Queen!
A little to Brit-centric.......2002-03-25
It was a very helpful book, but I found it a bit too Anglophilic.
As an American the book is lacking.
Essential for anyone planning to move to Spain........2001-05-10
Buying a Home in Spain by David Hampshire not only gives a variety of factual information about Spain, it reads like a novel. The book is up to date and discusses all aspects of day to day life in Spain. No matter if you are interested in the legal system, business, social life or want to know about the different areas, this book has it all. I appreciate the book most because it is written in a way that it will inform you no matter where you currently live. If you want to read just one book about living in Spain; this one excellent.

Customer Reviews:
Very good indeed.......2004-04-22
This is a very competent work and a very useful tool for the potential buyer of property in Portugal. I like the way it is structured making it easy to find what you are looking for. It is difficult to think of something you want to know and is not there. There is an excellent section on "Settling In". The "Language" and the "References" sections are quite detailed with pratical guidance and extra sources of information. It is an excellent buy.
Book Description
A growing number of people are interested in buying property in Morocco with its ancient towns, coastal resorts and snowy peaks. This North African kingdom boasts 1,400 miles of coastline, year-round sunshine and an open invitation to foreign investment and has seen a sharp increase in the numbers of house-buyers from abroad over the last four years.
Buying a House in Morocco is aimed at anyone seriously considering purchasing a property in Morocco to live in permanently, rent out, or transform to a guesthouse. Extensively researched and informatively written, it will give readers a rich insight into what to expect and how to go about fulfilling their dream for a new home.
Morocco offers an enormous range of housing, from the traditional dars and riads of the medina to the villas, new developments and old Moroccan style farmhouses of the countryside. The regional guide also covers the different types of properties to be found in each region, such as:
>Swiss-style chalets in Ilfrane
>The riads (grand courtyard homes) in Marrakesh
>Elaborate Andalusian villas in Tangier
>Kasbahs in the Draa Valley
In line with the Moroccan government's aim to quadruple tourism to ten million visitors a year by 2010 the appeal to potential home buyers will keep increasing. Approximately $5 billion is being invested in six luxurious coastal resorts including golf courses and luxury villas and on improving the country's infrastructure and accessibility. This spells good news for the letting market, for guesthouse owners and for those who are purchasing homes as an investment.

One of the best, but..........2005-08-27
I am looking to invest in property in Portugal and this book is proving to be really useful. It provides excellent guidance on all sorts of aspects from choosing a location for your Portuguese home to working and setting up a business.
It gives good guidance on the legal and financial aspects of the purchase, including mortgage, which can be somewhat difficult in a foreign country. Also additional information on tax and other important legal considerations. It goes much further, with sections on renovating, letting and selling, a bit too early for me but good to be able to read about it.
I would say there is only one weak point in this book, the advice on learning the language. I speak Portuguese and my recommendations would be quite different. This said, the book directs readers to specialist booksellers where they can see for themselves and choose the best suited course to their needs.

Quite good to get you started.......2004-03-03
This was my first guide before I bought a little place in the Algarve. It gave me the essentials and got me started. Then of course you will need a local solicitor, and some are quite fluent in English. This book does not do every thing for you but is very useful.
It's better than nothing . . ........2000-05-25
My wife is a Portuguese citizen and although we are currently living in the USA we've made plans to purchase a second home in her native country. This book is good for a basic introduction to the idea of purchasing a home in Portugal, but it really only skims the surface. The main chapters in the book are well laid out, but the narrative seems to lack a continuous flow at times and doesn't do a good job of summarizing key points or explaining the fine details. What the book does best is at least make the reader aware of the many considerations and complex issues (different taxes, different possible ways to arrange for a mortage, etc.) that need to be examined before making a purchase. However, the book doesn't provide enough information on any of these issues for the reader to make any judgements about his own situation. I guess I was hoping the book would be more along the lines of the humbly-entitled but very helpful "Idiots Guide" or "Dummies" series. This book is definitely not along the sames lines as those books. Good news if you're proud of the fact that you're not an idiot, but when it comes to buying a home in Portugal I'll be the first to admit that I AM and idiot, and would like to have things explained to me thus! I also think that my admittedly "American" expectation was that the book would be comparing purchasing a home in Portugal with purchasing a home in the USA. In all fairness to the author, that's not what was stated. The book doesn't directly compare purchasing a home in Portugal to purchasing a home anywhere else, which makes the task of explaining the business of buying a home in Portugal very difficult indeed - the author doesn't share a common frame of reference with the reader. (Though one can definitely tell that the author is from the United Kingdom). Because of the dearth of information available, I am still glad I bought it and can recommend that anyone thinking of making this move read this book. However, I'll still be relying on my wife's in-depth knowledge of Portugal when we do purchase our home there. Best of luck to you!

Quite good!.......2006-03-20
I am looking into buying a place in the Algarve and this book has been a great help. It guides you through the buying process in Portugal, giving you the specialised language you need at each stage, legal and also practical to do with building etc. It takes you through the search for property, the purchase, etc. It has a lot of diagrams with the words for woodwork, plumbing, heating, decorating, garden, etc. The diagrams show the Portuguse words for details like joist, drain cock, current tester, circuit breaker, different types of locks and bolts. There are also lists of vocabulary by topic. This book has been a great help to me. I just wish the vocabulary lists were at the end of the book instead. Some words are difficult to find as it is. You dont always know what section to look up for them. This can be frustrating.
Also dont expect the book to teach you the language. It is not for that. It gives you the vocabulary to go with buying property in all its various aspects, but that is it. For the language I have Manuela Cook's Portuguese course, which is excellent and gives you also vocabulary and phrases for things you need when you have got your home in the country, like talking to your cleaner and the like. Also socialising, getting a job, etc.

Tom Jones Very Up Close.......2007-04-30
The book was factual with a complete listing of references in the Index. The authors provided a balance in accounts so that the reader could develop an overall understanding of the man. I found the intricate details of his sexual habits interesting. That the authors could trace to a source to learn such intimate detail, showed the detail to which they researched the book. The book perhaps focused much on the music industry, how songs formed, the bands and musicians that created the entire package "Tom Jones". We learn through the authors the weaknesses and strengths of such an entertainer. The book provided a good blend of personal and professional insight into Tom Jones. This was not a gossippy type read.
Interesting reading but..........2006-08-23
I gave this book four stars because I couldn't put it down, even though it was clear to me the authors were kind of sticking it to Tom Jones throughout the book. Perhaps they were unhappy that he did not collaborate with them on it? I understand the book is an expose, yet how credible is it for the authors to quote a source talking about her liasons with Jones, and not reveal the source's real name? I think it would have been better to exclude such, "sources." Instead, the authors justify such sources in the, "Acknowledgements," section of the book, stating, "Several interviewees requested anonymity for this book and we have respected their wishes." It makes me seriously question the book's content. In spite of this, I admit I found the book fascinating. I loved seeing the pictures of Tom Jones as a young boy, seeing pictures of his family, and learning how his career got started. If you do buy this book, it might be a good idea to also read a Tom Jones biography by an author who the singer has actually approved/collaborated with, just to get another viewpoint.
Is there anybody out there................?.......2006-01-07
Brilliantly written ......... but still much to learn about this seemingly quietly overprotected superstar.
So , what about his 'behind the scenes' lifestyle?
First hand knowledge through a friend , brings to light his 'dangerous liasons'and 'playing with fire' , so to speak.
Are there any girls out there whom have had personal one on one experiences with him?
We'd love to hear about it.
More needs to be written about this "Knight in shining".......
A rather enigmatic personality who seems to get away with everything....?
How does he do it?
I needed a shower after reading this book!!!.......2005-11-09
I am a true fan of Tom Jones and after reading this book, I verbalized a resounding Yuck!!! There were details in the book that I did not know about.......and wished I still didn't know about. I agree with others that have posted here in that there are some things in a person's life that are much better left alone. I realize that this was an expose' on Tom Jones and I respect that. It is a well written book. However, I got the distinct impression that underlying it all, the authors were not fond of Tom Jones from beginning.
He is a remarkable singer, a true legend, and I am still a huge fan. I will, however, never look at a bottle of Listerine the same way.
TOM JONES CLOSE UP.......2004-05-20
I JUST FINISHED THIS BOOK I FOUND IT INTERESTING BUT THERE WASNT MUCH INIT THAT I DIDNT ALREADY KNOW. I AM A TRUE FAN OF TOM JONES AND I AM ALWAYS LOOKING FOR MORE INFORMATION ON HIM
THE BOOK WAS GOOD AS I SAID BUT I THINK THE WOMEN WHO WROTE IT DIDNT ALWAYS PUT HIM IN A GOOD LIGHT
I WAS A VERY INTERESTING BOOK AND I REALLY ENJOYED IT ESAPECIALLY THE PHOTOS

Book Description
This analytical history is the most comprehensive and accurate record of the Ibsen campaign in London. Postlewait places major emphasis on the activities of William Archer, the theatre critic, translator, and director who zealously campaigned for the acceptance of Ibsen's works in particular and the new drama in general. He argues that proper appreciation of Archer's often devious role as the foremost advocate of Ibsen is vital to understanding how and why Ibsen was ultimately received on the London stage. Postlewait's reassessment challenges all previous histories and critical studies of this theatrical era and confronts the many contradictions of Archer's life and works that have previously clouded more straightforward histories. He presents Archer as a man with a sense of missionary urgency but also as an individual with an often paradoxical character and numerous self-defeating attributes. This process of reconstituting history and reexamining the career of William Archer, especially in light of his close relationships with Bernard Shaw and Elizabeth Robins, reveals the importance, complexity, and even brilliance of a man who may fittingly be called the prophet of the new drama.
