Required Reading.......2006-08-09
Great guidebook for anyone interested in "LIVING." Informative, entertaining, and motivating all in one read. Probably should be required reading for incoming freshman at University. Would have a more lasting impact and retention than most books found on traditional "required reading" lists.

A wise, sensible book on healthy aging.......2006-06-10
A smart, common sense alternative to all the junk science books out there on how to stay young forever. Deals with all the components which go into healthy aging from finances to fitness to staying active and finding fulfillment. No magic pills or secret fountains of youth, just practical, entertaining advice. A fun, informative read. As a a legal aid hotline attorney and owner a retail medical supply and equipment business, I feel this book would be very useful for my clients and customers.
Informative and Entertaining.......2006-05-31
I really enjoyed reading "Age Smart". It was not only full of useful and practical information but also very fun to read. The authors did a great job keeping the book light-hearted while providing solid information we can all use. I am someone who is in my late-thirties so the book spoke to me on many different levels. I understand now the importance of not only keeping my body in good shape, but that my financial and mental well-being is just as important. I recommend this book to everyone. I learned so much from reading it.
A superbly written book.......2006-05-26
I really enjoyed the book - it was very well written and I liked the balanced approach to aging. My favorite parts were the interviews because aging means so many different things to different people. It was good to know that things like staying curious and being an optimistic person are helpful in aging well and keeping the mind sharp. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone in their 30s, 40s and 50s who want to make sure they get to their older years in the best shape possible!
Age Smarrt- Discovering the Fountain of Youth to Midlife and Beyond.......2006-05-25
The simple fact of the matter is that we boomers are living younger--longer. In Age-Smart,Discovering the Fountain of Youth to Midlife and Beyond, Jeffrey Rosensweig and Betty Liu look at such issues as finances, health and well being, as well as numerous other issues that affect life expectancy. With an abundance of `sensory' caffeine that rejuvenates the spirit, such noted individuals as Former President Jimmy Carter, his wife Rosalynn, Helen Gurley Brown and myriad host of others, will force readers to re-think how they `see' the elderly. With such fun chapters as Just Say No to Pink Pants, Age Smart is chockfull of easy-to-use tips that supports that old adage,`that age is nothing but a number,' and I was humbled to be asked to be a part of what I predict will be a invaluable resource for men and women of all ages for years to come.

The outlines of Custer's life are familiar to all: After graduating last in his class at West Point, he rose to become the Union's youngest general on the strength of his flamboyance and military genius. Next came 12 years of checkered service in the American West, ending with the famous massacre at Little Bighorn. The most interesting unanswered question about Custer has less to do with his history than ours--why, more than a century later, are we so captivated by the man and his story? Wert believes the answer lies in the fact that Custer is a "symbol of the nation's guilt over its sad history of continental conquest."
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-06-13
This was my first autobiography to read about the life of Custer and it was well worth the time spent reading it.
Mr Wert's research was very extensive so he was able to bring to light some fasinating things about Custer's life, and particularly his love affair with his wife Libbie.
If there is a negative about this book it is the great amount of time spent covering the Civil War battles, but the Civil War is Mr Wert's area of expertise and I do enjoy reading about that period of American History.
Both the positives and the negatives are discussed about this very controversal figure leaving the reader to decide for himself what history will ultimately have to say about George Armstrong Custer.
Thorough.......2006-07-25
The best review of Custer I've read. Better than Monaghan's read. A must read for those interested in his life.
Gray for facts, Wert for flavor.......2005-08-16
This book incorporates many of the rather recent findings by Gray and others into a well told narrative. Wert "broke new ground" for me, by threading the begining of the division among Custer's officers into two camps, all the way back to the Civil War. Benteen served as a Lt. Col. under Custer's rival, Gen. James Wilson. Benteen carries the rivalry into their first meeting and it is reemphasized throughout their almost 10-year association. The chapters between the Civil War and the Little Big Horn add texture and dimension to the story. Wert quotes from some naughty letters to Libbie to demonstrate their genuine affection. While Wert's treatment of Custer's final battle may have differed with one reviewer, his assessment of Custer in the final paragraph of the Court-Martial chapter is harsh, accurate, and no "white wash" I like Gray for facts and Wert for flavor.
Great for the person looking for just 1 book on Custer.......2004-09-30
Jeffry Wert has done a wonderful job here in covering the life of one of the more controversial Generals in American history. The book is comprehensive and covers Custer from his early days as a boy (and for a short time, school teacher) in the midwest through West Point, the Civil War, his days in Kansas and finally his famous and final battle at Little Big Horn.
This book is a perfect fit for anyone who is interested in Custer but doesn't want to read 3 or 4 different books on the man. Yes, there are books out there that cover his life in the Civil War more in depth or that deal with Little Big Horn more but for those new to Custer and want a good overview of the man in one volume, this is perfect.
One thing I like about Wert is he's very balanced on Custer. We read in Wert's book about the man, his triumphs and some of his not so shining moments. Custer had great success during the Civil War and was highly thought of by his fellow commanders for both his courage and skills. He truly was one of the great calvary commanders of the Civil War.
At the same time Wert recounts some not so shining moments like Custer's attempt to trump his commanders at Appomattox by crossing the lines and trying to bluff Longstreet into surrendering the Army of Northern Virginia to him (Longstreet in short told Custer to buzz off). It also frankly deals with Custer's court martial at Fort Leavenworth where Wert does not excuse Custer's actions that landed him in hot water.
Wert really did a nice job on the research. At the same time Wert is a talented writer with a style that is easy and enjoyable to read. If you are looking for one book to read about Custer, this would be a good choice.
nothing truly new but very readable.......2004-03-08
Jeffry Wert's biography on George Custer adds another book on already heavy load on this historical military leader whose main claim to fame was that he got himself and his command wiped out by the Indians. Wert's book proves to be well written, nicely researched and very readable. But I think Wert feel bit too sympathetic toward his subject, mildly whitewashing many of Custer's gross sins both as a man and as a commander. Outside of that, the book doesn't add much to the Custer lore. For novice Custer reader this would be a good start (first of many). For veteran Custer reader, it won't add much more then what you already know so you can let your money make your decision on if this book is worth your while.

Book Description
The new Oxford Who's Who series offers a unique library of some of the world's greatest and most enduring literary, religious, and folklore traditions. Alphabetically arranged for easy accessibilty, the thousands of engagingly written entries cover every character in their related fields,
providing readers with the most comprehensive and wide-ranging reference collection of its kind.
Most books on mythology are primarily concerned with the Greek and Roman tradition, giving the equally vibrant myths of other cultures short shrift. Providing a much-needed solution to this problem, this unique guide offers wide-ranging and thorough coverage of non-classical mythological figures,
from the Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas to Zu, the lion-headed Sumerian storm bird. With its global, multicultural perspective, Who's Who in Non-Classical Mythology presents exciting and readable accounts of the gods, heroes, and myths of Europe (including the Celts, Teutons, Slavs, and
Basques), the Americas, Africa, Australia, China, Japan, and Indonesia. For those interested in a fresh approach to world mythology it is indispensable; for lovers of the classical tradition it will open up a whole new world.
Customer Reviews:
Useful, but somewhat outdated.......2000-05-19
While Kendall's revision dates to 1993, Sykes wrote the bulk of this in 1952 and in the intervening years, new discoveries and translations have made some parts of some entries inaccurate. The book is in standard, alphabetical format, with entries on deities ranging from a brief sentence to a couple of paragraphs. Their roles in myths are necessarily very briefly summarized although a number of entries on the creation legends of various cultures are more fully developed, running as long as a couple pages.
This book is best used as a launching point for further investigation. Find an entry that sparks your interest and then track down a fuller version of the myths or legends wherein they feature. Otherwise, it serves as a fair quick reference guide, but I wouldn't consider it authoritative.

Customer Reviews:
Really!.......2003-04-22
As one who works in the field of higher education fundraising, I'd say that one theme runs through this book--"the times are changing, and we're damned ticked off about." While there is some good advice for donors in this book, the premise that seems to underlie this is that neither fundraisers, nor university administrators can be trusted to carry out the wishes of donors. I strongly disagree. The vast majority of gifts to higher education are restricted in nature. By that I mean the donor has designated some purpose which he/she wishes fulfilled. In all but the rare case do institutions violate either the purpose or intent of the donor and consider stewardship to be a solemn pledge to carry out that intent. I don't think this book is particularly helpful in tone or content.
Make gifts to your alma mater really count!.......2001-04-18
A neat concise guide filled with common sense ideas on how to can make donations to your alma mater, or any school, work to improve learning and educational excellence.

This is not Feng Shui.......2001-08-30
It may be a real estate book, but how it can say it is Feng Shui is amazing.

This is the second-best way to expose yourself to the particular genius of Frank Zappa (music is the best, after all)--through his own words. In addition to being an idiosyncratic American composer of some degree of controversy, Zappa was an orator of no small ability or scope. He was known for his ability to expound at great length (and to hilarious effect) on any number of topics. The Real Frank Zappa Book faithfully captures this side of its author, composed of essays on everything from his background and upbringing, to politics, capitalism, and raising children. Zappa takes the opportunity to dispel some of the most pervasive rumors that surrounded him right up to (and even persist after) his death in 1993 (no he didn't do drugs, or sleep with all those groupies). If you're familiar with the man, you will be able to hear his distinctive enunciations (aided by the bold-facing of certain words and Zappaisms) as you read the assorted road stories, his views on making music for a living, and scenes from two--count them, two--organized hearings on obscenity in music. Of course, the chapter titles speak for themselves and include such Zappa winners as "All About Schmucks," "Marriage (As a Dada Concept)," and "America Drinks and Goes Marching."
Customer Reviews:
The man himself..........2007-03-09
It has everything every zappa fan wants to know about this amazing man, it is true that sometimes the book tends to get too political but I am sure some people will apreciate the fact that they can even get to know how would Zappa would've been if he got elected to be president XD.
It shows us the musiscian, political, personal, and overall personality of this great character.
Eat Those Questions!.......2006-06-24
All of the answers you wanted to your questions about Zappa are here!
If you like Zappa's music and humor, I HIGHLY recommend reading his autobiography "The Real Frank Zappa Book". You'll get the real story behind all the ridiculous urban legends you heard about this man.
I guarantee you will be laughing your backside off before page 3. I recall the first time I picked this up on a display at a Walden's books. I randomly turned to a page and started to read. It was all about how to deal with militant Islamic jihadiis. I was laughing so hard I was doubled over, convulsing and had tears in my eyes. The store clerks probably thought I was having a stroke.
*Learn about what Zappa really likes to eat and what he thought of the food at a Fayetteville North Carolina Holiday Inn buffet.
*Read about how his kids used to raid his studio fridge so he inevitably didn't get to eat that stuff he really liked.
*Become enlightened to learn that "coffee and cigarettes are food" (no wonder this man died so young)
*Discover the secret ingredients of the "Burnt Weenie Sandwich" and how to make your very own burnt weenie sandwich.
*Uncover the horrible, disgusting historical facts about those New Yorkers who were willing to climb and writhe around on stage and "Call Any Vegetable".
*Revel in the outrageous details of life in that rental home up in Laurel Canyon.
*Find out who the weird chick is peering up out of the crypt on Hot Rats.
*Discover why Zappa hated England and the Queen.
*Get the sordid biological facts about Kenny's little creatures and his disgusting bedroom window.
*Find out how a young Zappa nearly blew his "nuts" off with a jar of ping-pong ball filings and a book of matches
Zappa is lovably irreverant from page one all the way to the end. There's lots of interesting pictures including a 3 year-old Zappa in shorts with a cap gun. By the time I finished this book I found myself wondering how someone so incredibly brilliant could also be so stupid and ignorant with respect to basic nutrition and health.
The man of many faces.......2006-03-04
Learning all the history Frank Zappa and the Mothers went through was outstanding. The last chapter got a little preachy, but I never stopped laughing throughout the entire book. I'd think anyone that wants to know not only the "how" it was done, but some of the experiences along the way, are priceless to hear about.
Frank Zappa Invented Music Downloading.......2006-03-03
In this illuminating book, Frank Zappa shares his life, advice on child-rearing, tour stories, etc.
However, the most amazing revelation is contained in the chapter entitled, "Failures". In this chapter, Zappa details various ideas that he had proposed to venture capital companies. The most astounding of these is the idea to digitize music, and have it available to be transferred via high-speed phone lines to the consumer. Keep in mind that this book was written in 1988, and he explains that this proposal was prepared in 1982, before the invention and widespread popularity of the Compact Disc! He knew, twenty years before the fact, that purchasing music at a store, on media was an outdated process.
Regardless of how you feel about Zappa's music, this shows his absolute genius. He foresaw digital music, the transfer of digital music, the use of telephone lines to transmit this music.
Brilliant
The Real, but Out-Dated, Frank Zappa.......2005-10-26
This book is a very interesting read, from the political cartoons that begin each chapter, to the doodlings in the margins. The book starts off with a basic history of the man himself, and progresses on into anecdotes from the road and assorted rather hilarious stories from Zappa's life. Being Frank Zappa this makes for an incredibly ridiculous, and almost fantastical series of chapters. the books previous momentum tails off toward the last third of the book as Zappa launches into numerous tirades about the Reagan administration and Cold War, which are by now terribly outdated. However, buried in this criticism is an entertaining account of the proceedings of the Senate hearings involving the Parent's Music Research Center. Overall this is a good read, although flawed, but even Zappa's beration of Reagan translates to the present, and it is easy to think of what Zappa considers of today's society.
Book Description
Many know the name "Uncas" only from James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans, but the historical Uncas flourished as an important leader of the Mohegan people in seventeenth-century Connecticut. In Uncas: First of the Mohegans, Michael Leroy Oberg integrates the life story of an important Native American sachem into the broader story of European settlement in America. The arrival of the English in Connecticut in the 1630s upset the established balance among the region's native groups and brought rapid economic and social change. Oberg argues that Uncas's methodical and sustained strategies for adapting to these changes made him the most influential Native American leader in colonial New England.
Emerging from the damage wrought by epidemic disease and English violence, Uncas transformed the Mohegans from a small community along the banks of the Thames River in Connecticut into a regional power in southern New England. Uncas learned quickly how to negotiate between cultures in the conflicts that developed as natives and newcomers, Indians and English, maneuvered for access to and control of frontier resources. With English assistance, Uncas survived numerous assaults and plots hatched by his native rivals.
Unique among Indian leaders in early America, Uncas maintained his power over large numbers of tributary and other native communities in the region, lived a long life, and died a peaceful death (without converting to Christianity) in his people's traditional homeland. Oberg finds that although the colonists considered Uncas "a friend to the English," he was first and foremost an assertive guardian of Mohegan interests.
Customer Reviews:
A Review, Not a Polemic.......2003-06-22
Masquerading as a review of this fine and useful volume, the North Stonington contributor (above, or perhaps below) displays vast ignorance of not only the subject matter of "Uncas: First of the Mohegans" by Michael Leroy Oberg but also of national and world history as well. To gainsay his non-review tirade, this reviewer wishes to commend to other readers an opportunity to learn of the enormous complexity that occurs when contrasting and competing cultures meet and far too often clash, such as we are witnessing in our own day. The relationships that develop rarely serve either culture as long as Santanyana's warning goes unheeded. That modern day Mohegans even exist is itself a miracle: that the colonial European mentality of greed and resentment still abides in at least one North Stonington heart is dismaying, to say the least.
"Uncas" deserves a proper reading unsullied by prejudice.
Sovereign nations?.......2003-06-10
The overwhelming evidence Mr. Oberg presents of how the southern New England tribes repeatedly had to ask permission of the English before they could seek revenge against another tribe leads me to believe that these groups were not considered sovereign at that time at all.
It appeared that much of the tribes' time was taken up with going to Hartford or Boston to meet with the English leaders and ask for something. If they were sovereign nations that wouldn't have been necessary. This is heavily documented with footnotes as to sources.
Plus, he shows ample evidence that the Pequot War at Mystic was not the "white guys bash Indians" situation it is often portrayed as but was an extension of squabbles between the Pequots and the Mohegan and Narragansett tribes prior to the arrival of the English . Uncas egged on the English to attack his enemies.
So why do we grant federal recognition to their descendants today?
Mr. Oberg's book should be read by all Congressmen who are faced with granting federal recognition to "tribes". Perhaps the relation of other colonists to other tribes was similar and they were not considered nations either. Perhaps this reading of history will counter the 1970's mythical rewrite of Indian history too many are enamored of.
