Well researched and written by Phillips.......2007-10-01
Phillips obviously researched his topic thoroughly and has great insight into Jackson and the reasons Missouri found its identity with the southern states.
Phillips weaves his story masterfully. Well done.
The most Confederate state.......2000-09-01
Driving in Jefferson City, Missouri a few years ago, I saw a man selling Confederate flags by the side of the road. In the St. Louis area, where I live, this man would probably have been beaten to within an inch of his life, but to most Missourians, St. Louis might as well be New York City. In out-state Missouri, publicly displaying a Confederate flag does not seem to be an unofficial felony.
Why? Why did a state which began life and perceived itself as Western become the most Confederate state in America(as some of us like to point out, WE didn't surrender until 1882, when Frank James turned himself in after Jesse's murder)? In this biography of Claiborne Jackson, the Missouri governor who tried to take his state out of the Union, Christopher Phillips argues that Missouri's transformation from Western to Southern basically boiled down to the protection of slavery. Central Missourians, the people around whom this book mostly revolves, did not see owning slaves as contrary to democracy but central to it. Their families had owned slaves since emigrating to the West from Kentucky or Virginia. Threats, or perceived threats, to slavery finally drove segments of Missouri's leadership to a full-fledged Southern identity and led to Missouri's exceptionally violent civil war, which in turn fueled Missouri's fierce postwar attachment to the Confederate States.
This is both a good biography of Jackson and a good study of antebellum Missouri. But I do have a few problems with it. Phillips spends the bulk of his time in the Boon's Lick(now called Little Dixie another result of the war)among the slaveholding aristocracy there. Natural, one assumes, because that's where Jackson was from, but the rest of the state is neglected. St. Louis is paid attention to, but other areas of the state, like the fiercely Unionist regions of the Ozarks, are barely mentioned. And once the war starts, Phillips seems in a hurry to wrap things up; I wish he'd spent more time on the war itself.
Nonetheless, if you're interested in antebellum American history, this book is well worth your time.

Must read before joining a board of directors........2007-05-07
I do not rate with 5 stars easily. However, Conrad's book is essential reading for everyone not familiar with boards of directors, their responsibilities, their liabilities, and how they work. If you are thinking about joining a board, then read this book and keep it next to your dictionary and your Bible, because these will be your most important books. I cannot say it better than that.

The Deep Purple Book.......2007-10-06
This is a interesting book.I've been a Deep Purple Fan since I was a teenager.Things I had not known when the band formed and had such a crazy history with all the lineup changes through the years. So much drama.Yet Deep Purple finally has stabilty and able to keep on goin' with great music.I could'nt stop reading it and wanted to know what's goin' on now. It's a good book.
Perfect companion to "The Complete Deep Purple" by Michael Heatley.......2006-08-01
In fact, I was skeptical that this book could match Thompson's book. Well, I read this one right after and was equally impressed; both have much to offer and are not as repetitive as I anticipated (both contain lots of info. unique to themselves). As a HUGE Deep Purple fanatic (and all things Blackmore), I was very impressed with this book---in fact, it was very hard to put down. Lots of good tidbits I didn't know before (or, if I did, more details were fleshed out); quite a page turner. Get this one asap!
You must understand what you will get and what you will NOT get here..........2005-09-07
ou must understand what you will get and what you will NOT get here... What you will NOT get here is any details about personal and family lives of any of the members. Not a chance. Not any particular personality traits, preferred hobbies or parallel activities (outside the realm of music). Gossip will not be featured either.
This is a straighforward chronological account of Deep Purple history, with the author doing his best within three hunderd pages.. He was playing a losing game since the beginning, because no one can write a Deep Purple history in only 300 pages. So, I suggest to use this book as a framework to more research on your own.
this book sucks bigtime.......2004-10-26
I'm 28, a musician, and a big fan of Deep Purple (especially the mark 2 era). I was very excited to read this book before it came in the mail. I read some of the reviews on it here....some of them were negative, but I wanted to see for myself. Well, the truth is...it sucks. Why? Because it is written like a scientific report in a college journal. No one in thier right mind would ever want to read garbage like this. This is a book that you can only read a chapter of before you throw it down in disgust. I'm being extreme, but this is an extreme matter. I was on a tour bus and this is the only book I had! I was forced to try to read some of it. There is some great info in it, but you have to sort through so much other stuff that's its not even worth reading. Maybe one day someone will write a real book on these classic unsung heroes if 70s rock.

The Autobiography of Black Hawk.......2000-07-05
The last "Indian War" in Illinois occurred in 1832 when a small band of Sauk refused under the leadership of the warrior Black Hawk to abandon their village (located under a subdivision of the present Rock Island, Illinois). They wandered up the Rock River, fighting contingents of regular army and state militia (a young Abraham Lincoln served several stints as a volunteer but saw no fighting; a young Jefferson Davis played a role in the last phases of the conflict), slipped into Wisconsin, and were finally defeated in a brutal massacre of men, women, and children on the banks of the Mississippi. Black Hawk surrendered and was taken East to meet President Jackson. After a short term in confinement, he and his companions were taken on a tour of the East Coast, an effort by the United States government to impress him with the young nation's overwhelming superiority in numbers and technology. The plan worked, by Black Hawk's own testimony, and when he returned to the Midwest he lived out the rest of his life in obscurity in a village in Iowa. He never saw his home again.
The origins of the autobiography published under Black Hawk's name has generated controversy. It was dictated to a half Native American interpreter, Antoine Le Claire, who rendered it into English, then edited by an Illinois newspaperman named John B. Patterson, who put it into publishable form. Both men swore that the result was faithful to Black Hawk's words, but the skeptical reader may be permitted some doubt; the language is clearly that of the period (surely Patterson's work), and Black Hawk himself complains on at least one occasion that his interpreter's grasp of the Sauk language did not suffice to translate a flowery speech. So what we have here, while no doubt in general faithful to Black Hawk's intentions and life story, cannot be his ipsissima verba. (It is a pity, given these doubts, that the editor of the volume, who has otherwise done an admirable job of annotation and commentary, did not compare the language of the preface, which records Black Hawk's own Sauk, with that of the text as a whole.)
Despite these doubts, there can be no question that the Autobiography affords us an extraordinary opportunity to see the impact of midwestern expansion on the native population from their own point of view, and to obtain direct access -- even if it has been mediated somewhat for non-native consumption -- into the social world of a people soon to vanish. The war itself is somewhat of an anti-climax, and deeply sad, doomed as resistance clearly was from the beginning. It is rather the self-presentation of a proud, successful Sauk warrior, endowed with considerable facilities of self-reflection and honesty, that make this book a treasure that every American should read.
A Book for Anyone.......2000-05-11
As a college student from the blackhawk area, I found this book captivating. Really written for any age or education level, I think anyone and everyone should read it. A heroic story of a real man, the book is a beautiful journey through history. The story some details of Black Hawk's life before the war and describes the events behind the wars and his interpretation of them well. I would recomend this to anyone from junior high up and definatly anyone from Rock Island or the surrounding areas.

What makes a hero?.......2007-08-12
That's a tough question, and I don't suppose there is a logical answer. My friends [and enemies] know me as an unreconstructed Confederate whose two biggest heroes are the Right Reverend Leonidas Polk and Secretary Judah P. Benjamin. This fine book gives an excellent portrait of a most unusual man...note that I gave Polk's title as "Right Reverend", not "Lieutenant General", though both are true....
In Matthew 19, Mark 10, and Luke 18 we read of Christ and the Rich Young Ruler...a young man who turned away sad, rather than follow The Master. Now, what would have happened had he made a different choice? Naturally, that would have been up to God's superintending Grace, but the story of Leonidas Polk is one possible answer...
Polk was born in Raleigh, NC, in 1806, of a family that had used the Revolutionary War land grants to full advantage...Having the choice to be educated anywhere he wanted, he followed the family tradition of military service and attended West Point. There he did quite well in his studies, formed a friendship with Jefferson Davis, and came under the influence of Chaplain Charles McIlvaine. Converted to Christ, he was the first man ever baptized in the West Point Chapel. Feeling a call to the Ministry, he resigned from the Army after graduation [this was allowed in an Army overstocked with officers], went to Seminary in Alexandria, VA, then was called to be Associate Rector of Monumental Church in Richmond. {The Church still stands, and has a memorial plaque for Bishop Polk, though it hasn't been used as a Church since 1965}.
Bishop Polk soon embarked on a dual career as priest of small Churches, and as an increasingly rich Tennessee planter. Yes, he owned slaves, about 500 of them. Remember, in that time and place , no one saw a conflict...he made sure the slave's Spiritual welfare was taken care of {Episcopal and Baptist services were available on the plantation}, kept a doctor in residence, kept families together, and in general provided as well for his slaves as well as anybody, anywhere. Consecrated a Missionary Bishop in 1838, he grew in the job, starting numerous Churches, spreading the Gospel, and eventually becoming presiding Bishop of Louisiana.
The Bishop had long seen a need for a distinctively Southern Episcopal university....thus, The University of the South, in Sewanee, TN was born. The author gives much space to this story, as well he should. When war came, The Bishop was offered General's stars by President Davis. After much soul-searching, he accepted, and served as a Corps commander in the Army of Tennessee until he was killed at Pine Mountain, GA in June 1864. It wasn't all roses...[almost] everybody had problems with Braxton Bragg, and Polk was no exception...there were conflicts in Kentucky, at Murfreesboro, and, finally, at Chickamauga. Polk was blamed for an incomplete victory, and, in truth, there is enough blame to go around. For all his problems as a General, Polk remains the only man to beat US Grant on the field of battle [at Belmont, MO].
Not long before he was killed, The Bishop baptized Generals Hood and Joe Johnston...a fitting final chapter for a man who was both Bishop and General. BUT, there is not yet a final chapter...numerous Churches consecrated by the Bishop still preach the Gospel, and Sewanee still educates young people for Christ.
This is a fine study of a very great man. Well written, well organized...until last fall, it was the best available...then, Glenn Robins wrote "The Bishop of the Old South", one of the very finest books I've ever read [see my review]. Still, this book is worth reading, if you can find it at a decent price [not easy; I was lucky]. Robins' book is superior, and is easy to find...still, the serious student should read both.
Good biography of Polk.......2005-12-31
Ordained a deacon in the Episcopal church three years after graduating from West Point, Polk was offered a commission by his West Point classmate Jefferson Davis shortly after the war began. After some hesitation, Polk accepted, was made a Major General, and began serving by helping fortify and defend Mississippi defenses. He later defeated Grant at Belmont, MO, and fought gallantly at Shiloh. He was second-in-command at Perryville, KY, and saw action at Stones River, TN. He failed to attack when ordered by Bragg to do so at Chickamauga and was removed from command (Bragg wanted him court-martialed but Davis refused). He was killed at Pine Mountain, GA, in June 1864. Davis lamented the loss greatly, though he was not considered by most as being a superior military commander.
Parks's book, first published in 1962 and reissued 30 years later, is a workmanlike account of Polk's life and career. His approach is scholarly (there are lots of footnotes), but not numbingly academic. He writes with authority and has studied his subject well. The book definitely has the feel of being definitive.
A Solid Bio of Polk.......1999-03-26
Parks has written a solid bio of "The Fighting Bishop" in this work first published in the 1960s. This book delves into Polk's family history, his days at West Point, how he got into the priesthood, his days as a bishop, his friendship with Jefferson Davis & Albert Sidney Johnston, and his feud with Braxton Bragg, among others. One sore point of the book, however, is that Parks has a great deal of respect for Polk and therefore hardly ever criticizes any moves made by Polk even though Polk is widely known as a below-average corps commander. Still, this a good bio (one of the few on Polk) and very much worth reading if you are interested in Polk.

Book Description
Notable Women in the Physical Sciences features substantive biographical essays on 96 world and American women scientists who have made significant contributions to the physical sciences from antiquity to the present. The essays go beyond the basic facts found in standard biographical dictionaries, bringing to life the women's developmental influences, the obstacles they faced and overcame, and their efforts to contribute to their chosen professions in spite of sometimes overwhelming disapproval by the establishment. The emphasis is on 20th-century women, and many of the living scientists profiled contributed interviews and autobiographical statements that add a vital and unique element to their profiles. Entries have been written by 70 practicing scientists and researchers who explain the scientific work clearly, in terms familiar to general readers and high school students. Each entry provides a fact box outlining major life events, including educational and career milestones, and concludes with sources for further reading. Forty-seven photographs complement the text. Disciplines covered include astronomy, astrophysics, bacteriology, biochemistry, biophysics, cancer research, chemistry, nuclear physics, and physics. Subjects were selected on the basis of historical importance and recognition by awards such as the Garvan Medal, Annie J. Cannon Prize, Nobel Prize, MacArthur Foundation "Genius" award, and the National Medal of Science. Seen across time and discipline, these dedicated scientists will inspire young women pursuing careers in science.

Review by Alex's recent cell mate Lori.......2007-10-19
I have just started to read Mass with Mary, Mass with Mary: The Prison Yearsand so far I love it. What makes this book so special to me is that 9 years ago I too was in prison with both Alex (Christina Dress) and Mary Kay (LeTorneau). I too witnessed many of the things Alex wrote about Mary's treatment. I was a paid law clerk much of my time there so had many an opportunity to observe and interact with Mary. Alex's book is so real and her writing technique is so her. She is presently having another legal battle in Ellensburg, WA and I have had the fortunate misfortune of joining her as a cell mate in the Kittitas County Jail for 3 days. What a great experience getting to know her, she's absolutely an awesome person. Just as in her book, so she is in person...real. She has asked me to print out the reviews of her book on Amazon and send them to her and so I will, but felt compelled to add my own review first. Love ya Alex, yeah, a movie may very well be in the future.
WHAT A BOOK!!!! EXCELLENT!!!.......2006-02-04
This was the most unusual book I may have ever read. Dress wrote down random thoughts and insight that became a vital part of the story as a whole. VERY DIFFERENT, VERY GOOD READING.
The parts about Mary Kay were good, but the prison story itself and the lives of Dress and Johnson were of interest to me and I'd enjoy reading more. My vote is for another book!

LETOURNEAU IS SO FAR GONE...BOOK IS NOT!!!.......2005-08-03
I can't help my strong opinion of Mary Kay Latourneau, but I can say that the writing of Chistine Dress was very impressive and her entire planning of the release of this book with the media coverage was brilliant. I'd give her five gold stars for that move alone. I could have done without her inserts from Tammy and Mary, but all in all...Dress made this book a success story all on its own. I suspect she will write another with better subject matter. And I also suspect it will be a top seller.
Best of luck to Dress in her future and with her freedom.
Something is sure wrong with the world when a rapist and a paper-hanger serve the same amount of time. Hmmm. Maybe that's a story in itself.
Excellent book and the P.R. with the media was top-notch on the part of Christine Dress...better support than Letourneau EVER deserved. Still, this is a five star book and I highly suggest everyone read it. Best book I've read in quite a while. VERY different. Very down to earth. Even my cop pals thought it was very thought provoking. Cops are not the same mentality as these so called 'officers' posted inside these state prisons. It is my hope that people realize that. These guards are just flunkies.
Thank you Christine Dress for a superior idea and the strength to follow through as you did. I can't imagine it's been a cake-walk. Hopefully your book sales have made life easier as you transition back into things. Good luck with your new life. Everyone desrves a fresh start. Maybe even Mary Kay...we'll see I suppose. My advice to you, Christine, is to keep your fresh start away from Mary Kay and Tammy Lisa...you don't need the extra baggage. You can bet, they won't be thinking about you. Take care of yourself and your family. I could tell how important they are to you in your writing. Stay with that focus.

THIS BOOK ROCKS...THANK YOU MS. DRESS!.......2005-07-29
I'm not much of a writer. But this book had a little somethin' comin' from me. ***** There, five of them stars. Wish I could give TEN. Loved that writing, man. Loved it all and want to read another DRESS book. Any Dress book. Just keep on writin' girl! You have a way with connecting to the reader like I've never seen before. Real cool. I bet you have tons of stuff you could write about...and you know we'll buy those books, too! Get on it, girl! You really got something special. -Alton

This is a wonderful book. I had a hard time putting it down- in fact, I think I finished it in just a few hours. I hope Christina keeps writing- she is very talented.
