The Best Technical Book on the Comstock Lode.......1999-08-03

I bought this book years ago when I first visited Reno, Nevada and Virginia City's Comstock mines. Years have passed and I'm buying again because of all the books every written on the Comstock, this book has it all. If you want to know what it really was like in those mines, read this book.

This book offers eleven chapters by different authors on various personalities in the history of what is now the state of New Mexico. The most interesting to me are about Tony Hillerman, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Pope and Wendell Chino.

Two of the least interesting chapters are about Billy the Kid and Kit Carson. Kathleen P. Chamberlain tells us that at least 250 books and hundreds of articles have been written about Billy the Kid, a part of a "search for a romantic old West that never existed." Barton H. Barbour describes the "powerful resonance" of Kit Carson's mythic life. In other words, the reputations of these men have as much to do with fiction as fact.

A lesser-known subject is Wendell Chino. Through Mr. Chino's leadership, the Mescalero Apaches have, perhaps, been the most successful tribe in New Mexico at becoming financially independent through the development of their gambling casino and Ski Apache resort area.

Pope was an Indian from San Juan Pueblo, who organized the revolt of 1680. Joe S. Sando, who wrote this chapter, describes this revolt as the original American revolution. It is difficult not too sympathize with the Pueblos in their rebellion against the Spanish conquerors who set about destroying everything these people held dear and exploiting them for Spain's purposes. Pope, it would appear, was a legitimate Indian hero.

Lois Palken Rudnick's chapter about Mabel Dodge Luhan is interesting. Luhan had already had several previous lives of wealth and glamour in Europe and New York prior to showing up in New Mexico. In 1918, she began an affair with Tony Lujan of Taos Pueblo, to whom she was ultimately married for thirty nine years. In Taos Pueblo, Luhan discovered a community that was a model of permanence and stability, where individual, social, artistic, and religious values were completely integrated in a way that she had not previously known. Ultimately, Luhan played a key role in promoting modern art in New Mexico and the work of people such as Andrew Dassburg, Ansel Adams, D. H. Lawrence, Georgia O'Keefe, and Frank Waters.

In the chapter on Tony Hillerman, Ferenc M. Szasz does a good job of characterizing the author's accomplishments. Hillerman, born in Oklahoma, has become a major New Mexico phenomenon as well as a literary voice for the Navajo and the American southwest in general. Szasz explains that Hillerman's themes in his sixteen novels include the following: the nuclear world and the cold war, southwestern anthropology and western history, Indian gaming, alcohol abuse, hantavirus, Indian education, and, in particular, the Navajo view of these things. Hillerman's writing, as it turns out, complements well the state's multi-million dollar tourism industry, said to employ 60,000 New Mexicans. It has been suggested that Hillerman's novels have brought more tourists to New Mexico than any other single source.

On the whole, for those interested in New Mexico, Richard Etulain has brought together some appealing reading.

Too Many Words Too LIttle Honesty.......2006-11-20

I love biographies and I loved the Donny and Marie show as a kid. I thought I would really like this book, but it was very poorly written. It is amazing to me the Donny Osmond had the help of a professional.

Donny spent so much of the book defending the actions of his obviously controlling father, a situation so common when children become entertainers. The book did not come across as real. He spent too much time trying to spare everyone's feelings. He spent too much time talking about how great his family was when they very clearly weren't.

There didn't need to be dirt, but it seems the author still has not come to terms with his family situation while growing up. I hope he writes a more honest book some day when he is older.

Best Autobiography ever.......2004-02-10

As much as I followed the Osmond Family careers, I read this hoping to find all the rumors to be false. It opened my eyes to how it really was for him in the limelight.
Glad to have the MAN back......the little boy grew up.

Very Spiritual, inspiring........2002-01-14

You do not need to be a Donny Osmond fan, or an Osmond fan for that matter to appreciate the message in this book.
Read this book, and learn about the Osmond's strength in their spiritual beliefs; learn about Donny's severe social anxiety dissorder, and how he copes with it.

Not an Osmond fan but loved the book.......2001-09-08

...While I will probably never be a fan of the music I really enjoyed the book. I think there are some important lessons here regarding raising children in the entertainment industry. Lesson #1 - Don't do it! Frankly I am a bit surprised that he did not end up another casualty of child celebrity or head into dark places like his friend Michael Jackson. I was most impressed with Osmond's honesty and candor. His handling of his devastating career collapse as well as his social phobia really make for good reading. Somehow I suspect we haven't seen the end of Donny Osmond. Even if you run screaming whenever "Puppy Soldier of Love" comes on you may still enjoy the book. I certainly did.

I can't disagree with the negative critics of this book. Every time Cook starts his condescending "jazz critic" schtick, I cringe. But I loved his research, his chronology -- everything that told me the history of this wonderful record label. I'm glad I have the book in my jazz library.

GREAT...IF NEW TO BLUE NOTE..........2006-01-23

Yes, I was hoping for some sort of in-depth tell-all... However,what I came across was a pretty good read and better than most(of this type) overview of a record company. Blue Note certainly deserves MORE...and it will come. But I must say that I did enjoy the book and that it was both entertaining and informative. The author does "intrude" with his own personal taste as to let's say Dexter Gordon's works...but heh, I agree with him on this...& I found his observations on the many other STARS: Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Lee Morgan...etc, to be pretty much ON TARGET....according to ME...but I'm no expert. I will say that reading this book has encouraged me to seek out certain composers/leaders & their works & has helped in building a jazz collection of Blue Note classics...& after all, isn't that what it's all about.....

This is a book for the Irritating Jazz "Critic". The type who held such power over the scene at the time, making and breaking as they pleased.

For a start the book is obviously a vehicle for the authors favourites. Paragraphs galore are available for certain artsts, somewhat inexplicably for Coltrane (whose only recording for blue note is actually rubbished.) The name Sidney Bechet is quoted almost paragraph to paragraph. Jackie Maclean too.

I found myself really disliking the book after Dexter Gordons entire blue note catalouge was rubbished.

It only achieves the second star as it give a few new names to check out. If you must buy it wait till you find it second hand for a dollar.

I really wanted to like this book.......2004-07-19

I was disappointed with the fairly dry presentation of material that I expected to be so interesting. The book is not without it's merits for the jazz lover who enjoys the recordings described. there is some inside info here but not much that couldn't be gathered from reading the excellent liner notes on the cd's themselves. The music captured on the Blue Note label is one of the great joys of my life. The RVG series of reissues on CD are consistently outstanding and capture a cultural period that was almost unbelievable in terms of the talent and creativity being expressed. I bought this book because I couldn't resist the desire to know as much as possible about the period and the personalities involved. The treatment here is adequate at best and at times quite dull. Sorry, but I can't give this more than 3 stars and that is based on the subject matter more than the style in which it is presented.

what a waste.......2004-04-06

the 6o's Blue note records are some of the greatest recordings, especillay the reissues of Rudy Van Gelder series. Any book has a lot of potential on this topic but the author is clueless-no research, no "where are they now", no inside information. Don't waste your time or money-I've seen liner notes with more insight than this.Buy the music instead.
