Approach this book as a point of departure for writing your own unique questions and you will be delighted. I was !

Whenever possible, I always move towards engaging members of the community or team or organization with which I'm working in the co-writing of the appreciative protocol. Such a co-constructionist approach invariably leads to more vibrant language, terms and phrases that are part of the culture yet expand it - and generally a better set of questions than anything I produce on my own. (and of course such a process also builds internal capability!)

But sometimes my best efforts to enage the client system come to no avail and so I find myself sitting in my hotel room in front of my laptop, facing a blank page. It is at those moments that this book really shines for me. The questions listed here serve as a stimulant, a point of departure and as a surrogate for a co-creator(s).

If you understand Appreciative Inquiry, and if you have learned the skills of question development, then this book is a gem for those times when no one else is around. !

Not So Good.......2003-10-04

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a means of planning change by focusing on the positive rather than the negative in organizations (or in an individual's life for that matter). The Discovery phase (Step 1 in the process) relies in large measure on obtaining input from stakeholders and that in turn requires having the right questions to encourage people to open up positively about past experience, the present situation, and future hopes and dreams.

This "encyclopedia" lists sample questions, usually three per topic, on a variety of issues that are arranged alphabetically (like an encyclopedia). I have two problems. One is that the topics might have better been grouped, e.g., those dealing with Mission and Vision, those dealing with Marketing (customers, products, quality), and so on. The other problem I have is that the questions after a while all sound somewhat similar. This would have been a more useful book, I think, if more space had been devoted to how to frame and ask questions. That particular chapter is rather brief but helpful.

Unfortunately the last 70 pages (of a 150-page book) could have been almost entirely eliminated. A chapter gives a template for a sample interview. It then makes it concrete by simply adding the phrase "the Human Resources Department at XYZ company" in the "Company Name" space of the template. There then follow four copies of the same blank template for the reader's use. Why four copies I don't know, unless the reader doesn't have a computer or copy machine. Is one supposed to cut out each copy for use? One simple chapter explaining the template would have been fine. The "sample interview" was a total waste, as were the four copies of the same template presented earlier.

While, as a planning consultant I think AI is a good tool for information gathering and assessment, I don't think I would find myself reaching for this book on a regular or even seldom basis.

I think the book to be written has to do with gathering positive information from people but also dealing with negative information. People will share positive experiences and hopes and are too infrequently asked for them, but they will also want to "vent" with negative information and an AI researcher needs to know how to react to and absorb and use that as well. The danger is that AI becomes a reaction to negativity (we all love to complain) and so simply tips the scales in the other direction rather than achieving balance in gaining people's contributions for change.

The entire "Men's Health" live improvement guides are top-notch and this book is no exception.

We all deal with money and how you management it is paramount. This book helps to educate you to the fact that no matter how much you make (From minnimum wage on up), you can live comfortably and make more money from it!

The book is broken down into five outstanding sections:

-The Money Mindset (Plenty of forms to fill out to let you know where the money is going, etc. and how to set budgets, etc...the basic but important stuff)

-Tactics for daily living (Everything from shopping to bill paying and more. Learn how to use your money wisely on a daily basis)

-Tactics for smart investing (A MUST...learn how to make your money grow...makes it easy to understand how to invest without a degree)

Eric The Screenplay.......2006-06-30

I found this book recently at a sale, and it came with a CD of three exclusive tracks for the Australia/ New Zealand market. The CD tracks were reworkings of House Of The Rising Son and Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood plus Lionize. I tend to baulk at most rerecordings, mostly finding the original to be the better version, which is the case here, however these two new versions are well arranged and performed, slightly over the top in the Burdon style, but he's still in good voice.

That left the book. For me, tales of rock `n roll excess eg. Stones, Jim Morrison bios I've found to be distasteful so I was hoping this not would be too explicit. I'd passed up another Eric autobiography which was going second hand (for a song...) called "I Used To Be an Animal" for that reason. Well, the bump and grind of rock `n roll familiarity is here and fortunately it does not resonate too loudly with lurid excess.

Tales of rip off in this industry are almost mandatory - if they didn't rip you off you weren't there - and it's here as expected, those corporate thieves and slimy opportunists who would suck the marrow from the bones of a songwriter. Eric now appears philosophic; the years have dissipated his anger - unlike Van Morrison who continues to musically regurgitate his grievances (yawn). Dodgy manager Mike Jeffrey, who leeched Jimi Hendrix as well as Eric (who believes Jeffrey may have faked his death), still holds a special place in his thoughts......

He recounts how former band member Alan Price was bequeathed the royalties to mega hit House of The Rising Sun due to the insistence of Jeffrey and the inexperience of the other young members, and that must have rankled over the years. Yet the band worked together later, and again I guess the years deaden the anger.

The narrative is an easy read, though at times disjointed and patchy, and sometimes with sketches where you hoped for the full blooded scene. He was neighbour to the great poet and author Robert Graves and some Graves' anecdotes would have been fascinating. Graves moves in and out of a couple of scenes but with no dialogue. Elvis drops into Eric's view in one scene, flying in like a super hero to give a cheque to charity, as you might expect. He also recounts Lennon's acerbic reunion with his father, and a young, ignorant Jerry Lee Lewis goading Chuck Berry on a tour bus in the UK. Another scene has Eric himself threatening to blast an obnoxious Jim Morrison out of his house. He was good friends with Jimi Hendrix and offers insight to his death.

Eric has lived the full hoopla and now recalls events in his way. It certainly is not literature as another reviewer suggested - try Dylan's Chronicles for splashes of that. Dylan also recalls events as he saw them. Incidentally I read Dylan's book alongside Howard Sounes' biography of The Bobmeister - an interesting and amusing comparison of what others recalled compared with Bob's historical recollection. Well of course he'd recounted the screenplay as he rememberd it. And possibly Eric has done the same and doubtless he's not one to let a fact, or the lack of such a thing, get in the way of a good yarn. In the words of Clive James "Autobiography is a lying art". Well it might be but in Eric's hands it is certainly entertaining. However if you're a musicologist, don't expect detail. This book is more about Eric's life and loves, not the appreciation or creation of his music.

Eric is an enigma. A guy blessed with an almighty soulful voice who wrote and adapted some damned good songs but in this book he recalls few of them in the making. I get the impression he's a tradesman who goes in, wires the house and departs. He mentions some bluesmen, yet the passion for their music isn't displayed, but it must have been there. I suspect that the authors geared this book to their perception of the modern market. I think they missed an opportunity, or maybe they provided for another with a sequel. Anyway, the bottom line is that it is an enjoyable albeit bumpy ride through Eric's landscape of the last 60 odd years.

Absolute must-have for any Eric Burdon fan. He is a wonderful story teller and keeps you amused and interested all the way through. He's and gives a lot of personal info. as well as sharing some great anecdotes about life on the road etc. After reading his book and learning about all he's been through,(and that's only what he's shared with us) and after seeing him play some 40 years after his start - you can only admire the man !!

Anti-Gravity.......2002-03-28

Anti-Establishment is a gross misrepresentation of Mr. Burden. Anti-gravity is far more accurate. God forbid this fella ever has an LSD flashback; he'd boomerang so far back he'd be skipping rope with his own DNA chain. Eric took drugs like the rest of us brush our teeth, daily at least once and some times more. The book is a terrific read.Great view from the inside from one of the front stage guys of the times. I picked up this book on Saturday, and put it down finished Sunday! Very, very entertaining. If you want to get away from the real world, without the use of intoxicants, grab on to Eric's shirt tail, its a real trip.

Many of Eric's best friends are dead.......2002-03-09

Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, John Lennon, John Lee Hooker....

These are the people that Eric Burdon thinks most highly of, and they are all dead. He is much less kind to the living throughout much of this book. I feel a big reason for this is that the dead cannot refute the statements you make about them. The topper was his claim that he was the "eggman" that Lennon sang about in "I Am the Walrus." It kind of cast a shadow on many of his other claims.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy most of Eric's (original) work and I strongly regret the unavailability of his late 1960's work outside of the numerous compilations. The stories presented in this book took me by surprise and sometimes made me laugh out loud. I shared more than a few of these anecdotes with my co-workers.

What the book is missing is more focus on the music. I would have loved to read more about his days with the original Animals and the stormy reunions. I also would have liked to read his thoughts on the period between "Winds of Change" and "Love Is" - how the music changed and his thoughts on the later Animals players and how he discovered them.

All in all, this is fun reading. The personal anecdotes are priceless, but it left me wanting to hear more about the music itself and the people that he worked with (not just the one off jams, but the albums).

After investing in public and private companies for over 30 years, serving on numerous public and private company boards, reading dozens of books and hundreds of articles on improving company boards and better corporate governance - this is the best I have come across. An Apt Guide.......2005-07-10

It's a little confusing because Phillips decides to go out of chronological order whenever he feels that grouping films by theme or subject matter would allow him to get his points across better. Thus the three Godfather films are discussed back to back (to back), and even though this allows him a freedom to show the cross-connections among the different parts of the Godfather saga, I wonder if it doesn't screw up our understanding of the amazing ups and downs of Coppola's career. Otherwise it is an amazing read and will be the standard book on the director for some time to come.

It is a measure of the book's evenhandedness that, even when I disagree on Phillips' rankings of the different movies, I still respect his opinion. He rates THE RAIN PEOPLE and FINIAN'S RAINBOW considerably lower than I do, while heaping plaudits on top of BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA and Winona Ryder's performance. I was glad to see that Phillips has seen and likes RIP VAN WINKLE, the episode of that Shelley Duvall fairy tale TV series that Coppola directed at a low point (it was on RIP that Coppola first worked with Eiko Ishioka, the costume designer who later on made the fantastic DRACULA costumes so creepily memorable).

Spelling the "best film of the 90s" as GoodFellows is a little odd, but Phillips is an old school journeyman film writer, with lots of research under his belt, and a level head to boot. He makes us curious about all the footage said to have been cut by Warner from THE OUTSIDERS (1983) and how handy is it that from what I hear this footage has been restored by Coppola for the upcoming theatrical re-release and DVD of the film this fall! I wonder if we will ever see another version of THE COTTON CLUB too--or if Coppola will ever work again with Diane Lane, on whose behalf he labored so long, like John Hughes did for Molly Ringwald or, if it comes to that, as Josef Von Sternberg did for Marlene Dietrich.

Coppola: godfather of filmmaking

HIGHLY READABLE BIO OFFERS INSIGHT AND PERSPECTIVE

At first, I feared that Godfather: The Intimate Francis Ford Coppola would be a stilted thesis. Instead, I found it to convey the research and knowledge of an esteemed academic in a book that is easy to read.
The research is certainly strong; author Gene Phillips, a professor of English at Loyola University of Chicago, knows his stuff. However, I am more impressed with the way the book flows. It covers Coppola's work with just the right amount of detail.
The book is biographical, but the focus is on Coppola's movies and how they were made. Phillips breaks the book into chronological chapters but also groups similar works together. He discusses all three chapters of the Godfather saga as a group, even though they stretch over a 20-year period, during which Coppola was making other movies.
Phillips is obviously a fan of Coppola, but the book comes across as dispassionate and even-handed. It takes us through Coppola's youth, his education at the UCLA film school, and his work for Roger Corman, the king of the B movies.
The book would be well worth the effort just to read Phillips' perspective on how Coppola turned Mario Puzo's novel The Godfather into a classic film trilogy. Coppola saw through some of the more graphic sex and violence in the novel and focused on the drama of the struggle of the family. Graphic scenes were certainly part of the movie, such as the famous horse-head-in-the-bed scene, but Coppola was able to weave the drama and story line of the book in the way that became a film classic.
Coppola was savaged by critics for casting his daughter, Sofia Coppola, in a critical role in Godfather III, and Phillips explains that she was a last-minute replacement after Winona Ryder became ill.
Phillips also examines Coppola's screenwriting, as well as his business dealings in Hollywood.
Coppola won an Oscar as the screenwriter for Patton, in which he captured the eccentric general in a way fans and critics could appreciate.
And while they were developing Apocalypse Now, Coppola and George Lucas, who had been very close, broke their friendship; Coppola finished the film that is now considered an American classic.
Coppola's skill as a director was not always matched by his skill as a businessman, and his money woes included bankruptcy. One of Coppola's low-budget successes was The Outsiders, a movie about teen alienation that helped launch the careers of Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze.
Phillips notes that the Coppola legacy has been passed to the next generation. Sofia Coppola won an Oscar this year for writing Lost in Translation and was nominated for best director for the same film.
A slight irritation is that Phillips injects himself into his book every 30 pages or so. In discussing Coppola's success in the wine business, Phillips writes "For myself, I chose a bottle of dark, dry Coppola claret." So?
But overall, Coppola's movies will be seen for generations to come, and the book Godfather is a good insight into those films and the man who made them.

Beginning as a family planning field worker in Sweden, she quickly gained respect from the medical community for keeping abreast with sexological research and safe, reliable contraceptive practice. By the 1940s, her grass-roots organization helped to introduce sex education instruction in the public schools and fought for liberal abortion and homosexuality legislation.
