The right place to start.......2007-02-06
This was not the first estate planning book I bought, but it was the best. Without dumbing the issues down, the author carves out manageable modules to make each chapter as clear and understandable as possible. The book features anecdotal paragraph case studies based on real-life examples to flesh out the major points. In contrast to more encylopedic approaches, and as part of the NOLO series, this book is for non-lawyers. It makes clear that estate planning is about how to avoid probate and how to arrange for the conveyance of your assets to your heirs. That is, estate planning not about tax sheltering per se. Obvious, perhaps, to a lawyer, but not to most people. Another strong point is the clear and cogent explanation of trusts. A trust is a written agreement that defines the relationship among the grantor, the trustee, and beneficiaries. Here as well, the book delivers big-time by rendering legal abstractions accessible to the general reader. What a great service!
Highly recommended :).......2006-05-21
If you have ever embarked on a mission to get your affairs in order, or to help someone get theirs in order, you know how daunting the task can seem. I bought three other books prior to this one, and wish I would have started here. The other books are vast in their expertise, but are too complex for someone getting started. This book is the perfect place to start if you want to gain knowledge about estate planning prior to either making your own will (and/or living trust), or prior to going to see a lawyer for his or her help. This book explains the essentials in simple English. It truly delivers on its sub-title, "What you need to know & nothing more".
p.s. If you are going the do-it-yourself route, I recommend that your second purchase is Quicken WillMaker 2006.
A Must-Have for Estate Planning.......2004-03-01
This is the best book out there on Estate Planning Basics. Armed with this book and Quicken Personal Lawyer I was able to do our living trust, wills, life insurance and other estate planning documents and save the legal bills. Even if you end up using a lawyer, you should get this book first to get informed.

A textbook for paralegals interested in learning things about estate administration work they would perform at a law office........2007-10-13
This book was OK. As I read it I got the feeling that it was a compilation of a community college instructor's notes he threw together to teach a course on estate administration to paralegal students. The key word in that last sentence was "threw." Although the author asserts early in the book that its purpose is to provide a basic understanding of the legal principles involved in estate work, the words used are just too sloppy and sometimes inaccurate to accomplish this goal. As a result, someone not already knowlegable about the subject matter of this book might be mislead or get the wrong impression of what estate work is about.
This book is about estate work a paralegal might be expected to do while working for an attorney who offers estate planning and estate administration services. This book talks a little about financial planning, retirement planning, estate planning, and estate administration.
In my humble opinion this book mischaracterizes financial planning and retirement planning as being related to estate planning and estate administration. Financial planning involves planning your finances while you are alive so you will accumulate assets. Retirement planning involves planning so your accumulated assets will support you after you retire. Estate planning involves planning how to transfer your wealth to others either during your life or after your death in such a way as to minimize paying wealth transfer taxes (gift, estate, and inheritance taxes). And estate administration involves legally transferring a decedent's wealth after his death and paying any wealth transfer taxes due. Law work has nothing to do with financial planning and very little to do with retirement planning.
This book seems to be written under the belief that lawyers must be a part of estate planning and estate administration. Nothing could be further from the truth! While it is true that many executors seek the help of a law firm to administer an estate, and that the law firm usually takes over the executor's duties in administering an estate, this is not a requirement. If it were, then why have an executor involved in the first place? Or why not just make lawyers executors in the first place?
Another problem I had with the book was the way probate was intertwined with the definition of estate administration. Everyone has an estate. And every estate has to be administered. But not all estates have to go through probate. There is such a thing as estate administration WITHOUT probate. And after reading this book I wouldn't know this fact.
If you are interested in reading a book about estate work a paralegal usually does, then you would do yourself a favor to read this book. This book documents how a paralegal usually does his work, but it DOES NOT document how estate work has to be done. This is probably my biggest gripe with this book. Most of what a paralegal does can be delegated back to the executor if the paralegal knew how to coach the executor. But then the law firm wouldn't be able to bill as many hours to the estate. Oh well.
I would have liked the book better if Chapter 4 regarding trusts had been more accurate and complete. And I would have liked the book better if Chapter 6 regarding Estate Planning for theElderly had been omitted. I also found it strange that the book asserted that paralegals don't usually calculate the taxes due by the estate. It's my understanding they regularly complete the tax returns and in doing so they calculate the taxes due. 3 stars!

Customer Reviews:
Informative and Helpful.......2007-03-14
Before reading this book, I hadn't the slightest idea about mortgages, the lending process or owning a home. This book layed out in a clear and concise way how mortgages work and how interest can affect your home loans. I had no idea it could take so long to actually begin to pay off your mortgage! For someone who barely made it through high school math successfully, the examples provided by the author help to illustrate the points made in a way even a math-challenged person can comprehend. I now feel I have the knowledge necessary to be able to own my own home sooner than I thought possible. The author communicates to the reader in such a way that it feels she is right there with you, explaining the whole process in a casual conversation. If you are feeling at all confused about mortgages and loans then pick up this book to ease your nerves.
Wrong Title.......2007-01-14
If you do not have a basic knowwdge of mortgages, then this book is for you, however if your trying to compare the pros and cons of different mortgage products, then this book falls short. It provides information that can easily be obtained either by speaking with various lenders, or by conducting research online, for free. The book should be titled Mortgage 101, and not the misleading title of lose your mortgage, because unless you have a lot of extra cash your still in it for the long haul.
money saving.......2006-08-31
I'm really glad I read this book because there were some mortgage types that initially sounded like good ideas until I read about them in this book and looked at the examples given for each one. I could see what damage some loan types can actually do to unsuspecting buyers! I took an economics class last semester that talked about different types of mortgages but I never understood any of them until I read this book. Thank you in advance for saving me lots of money :)
a big help.......2006-06-24
I recently bought a house and this book TOTALLY helped me on how I could actually OWN it instead of the bank owning my house. With the way the market is today this book will help you feel more in charge of buying and owning your home as opposed to feeling crushed by the daunting interest rates. You will be VERY suprised as to what REALLY goes on when it comes to financing your home.

Useful study of one general at Gettysburg.......2000-05-22
Don't expect "Hancock at Gettysburg" to provide a comprehensive narrative of the battle. That was not Gambone's purpose. Instead, he set out to portray one particular general's part in that crucial fight: Winfield Scott Hancock, "Hancock the Superb". I wouldn't recommend the book to someone without a good understanding of the battle beforehand, but it does provide solid information to anyone wishing to learn more about how the Union high command functioned during the three days of combat. In particular, two controversial episodes are highlighted: Hancock being assigned to take charge over officers more senior than himself, and Hancock's disagreement about how the artillery should be employed during the great bombardment preceding the so-called Pickett's Charge. In workmanlike prose and with excerpts from firsthand accounts, Gambone presents the story of his hero. Occasionally, his choice of material is a little peculiar (why does he quote Rutherford B. Hayes, a man who was not at Gettysburg, about Hancock's dramatic ride before his troops during the bombardment?) but for the most part a good range of opinions is presented.
This is a worthwhile addition to the ever-growing bookshelf of Gettysburg studies.
Carefully researched, superbly constructed........1997-10-16
A fascinating look at the minute by minute days of the immortal Battle of Gettysburg through the eyes of the man who is credited with saving the Army of the Potomac on the first day of the fight. Winfield Scott Hancock - an army called him "The Superb", and Gambone's fine biography shows us that this was simply a description of the man himself. Loud, profane, passionate, often angry, Hancock was all of those things...but he was a man of whom his officers said "you feel safe when you're near him." Gambone's well written book takes us from Hancock's first days as a handsome young lieutenant in the Mexican War through the horror of the Civil War to his last sad days, nearly penniless, old and sick. But he never lost his luster, his ability to command and to inspire men, his charisma and his passion. Gambone brings the exciting days of the Civil War back to us, takes his readers along to many bitter battlefields, and in the end, presents the general's last days poignantly and beautifully. The reader will want to salute as the soldiers did on that rainy February afternoon when Hancock the Superb passed them for the last time. This is a "DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!" book.

Book Description
Clement Leibovitz and Alvin Finkel challenge the familiar understanding of Munich as the product of a naive "appeasement" of Nazi appetites. They argue that it was the culmination of cynical collaboration between the Tory government and the Nazis in the 1930s.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book but... .......2006-09-18
First of all I must say that I found this book generally quite brilliant and at times really convincing. Up to the Munich conference or fiasco, the authors' narrative of the ruthlessness with which British and, to a lesser extent, French establishments plotted to strengthen and lead Hitler's Germany to a major confrontation with Soviet Union, is enthralling and definitely convincing. After that I found that the consistency of their thesis somewhat decreases and does not seem to be able to put into the picture and in the correct perspective other important events, that would underline also the duplicity and ambiguity of the Soviet regime: the occupation of Eastern Poland, that still continues even if under a different guise, the aggression on a sovereign state like Finland, the occupation of Baltic States.
I am afraid that the authors did not consider also that, chronologically at least, gulags, concentration camps, mass murders and engineered famines came well before German Lagers. It is safe to assume, I guess, that educated politicians like Baldwin, Chamberlain, Halifax, Daladier were well informed of the brutish nature of Stalin's regime and might have been rather scary to ally with the Soviet dictatorship. The authors seem at times to downplay the extent of Soviet crimes against their own population and the aggressive policy they led against Central Asian states ever since the existence of the Soviet regime. While it is impossible to downplay the huge responsibilities of Chamberlain and his men for the military resurgence of Germany, I find it hard to consider Stalin's URSS as the white knight riding across Europe to safeguard democratic Europe's independence.
WERE CHAMBERLAIN AND HITLER ALLIES?.......2006-06-05
In rehashing the events that the resulted in Hitler's invasion of Poland and the outbreak of WW2 virtually ALL historians(except ultra leftist)have concluded that Neville Chamberlain's appeasement of Hitler(the Munich conference)was a result of fuzzy thinking on the part of the Conservative PM,who genuinely desired peace and who didn't realize the madness of Hitler, and "Der Furher's determination for WORLD DOMINATION,and Aryan supremecy.
Authors Clement Leibovitz & Alvin Finkel, after painstaking research, have shown beyond a doubt,at least to this reviewer, that Chamberlain's policy was one that was backed by the British Establishment for ecomonic,political(anti-Communist)and racial reasons, after all the Brits are mostly of Anglo-Saxon stock. The role of the influencial "Cliveden Set"is examined,as is the of record of Lord Lothian(Philip Kerr)who as an influencial "Liberal" Party politician who opposed war, with Hitler, on account that such a war would mean the break-up of the British Empire(he was so right!)Many Tory Party members,Chamberlain's own party, were ardent supports of Hitler and were early to join the "Anglo-German Friedship Society. In fact Hitler greatly admire the British Empire, and why not, isn't that Empire based on Aryan domination? This is an excellent book that should be widely read.it is revisionism, but revisionism is not bad,or good in and of itself,it is good if it leads us closer to the truth, and I believe this book does just that.By knowing the truth we will be better able to make correct decesions,in the future.I cannot praise this book to much.
Top-notch; a work of sheer intellectual brillance.......2002-11-21
Authors have exposed the diabolical nature of British leader Neville Chamberlin.Firstly authors say [correctly]that appeasment was a myth.As early as 1934 British leaders of conservative party had adopted a policy of giving Germany a free hand in eastern Europe. In Nov1937 Lord Halifax had met Hitler ,told Britain would not oppose if Germany carried out expansionist polices in eastern Europe.Later British ambassador in Berlin Neville Henderson gave similiar assurances to this effect. When Hitler commenced threatning Czchecoslovakia ,under the cover of demanding self- determination for Sudenten Germans ,Chamberlin refused to take action. But refusal was contingent on Germany not attacking the West.In other words Germany was free to expand towards easern Europe and Britain would ensure Czeckoslovakia does not stand on the way. Shockingly this was the secret deal Chamberlin made with Hitler at Godesberg prior to Munich talks. One is now forced to endorse Soviet leader Stalin's view that West tried to embroil Germany and Soviet Union in a war.
On March 15 1939 Nazi Germany swallowed remaining rump of Czeckoslovakia .On March27 1939 in a speech to House of Commons Chamberlin gave a guarantee to Poland.Later it was told Western democracies by this time realised their folly went to war to stop further German depredations.Authors have shown guarantee to Poland was a sham ,only served as an instrument to deter Germany from attacking the West. By this time it came to be known ,according to British intelligence ,that Hitler was making secret preparations to attack the West.Western democracies ,however, communicated through secret channels that it was prepared to foresake Poland provided Hitler confine his ambitions to eastern Europe.Hostile public opinion forced democracies to start staff talks with Soviet Union .The purpose was to form a collective front to stop Hitler's march to war.But talks dragged on with West showing no willingness to bring it to succeessful a conclusion.
What Soviets wanted from the West was ironclad guarantee.Russians were prepared to commit 100 divisions for defence of Poland.Since Moscow did not share common border with Germany it wanted right of passage for its troops. This obstinate Poles refused to give. Here it must be said Russians were trying 1934 onwards to forge collective security pact with West .Such a pact would have stopped Hitler's Germany on its tracks .Presumably Hitler's regime would have been ousted in a coup or would have resigned. Then course of history would have been different. But British leadership's moral blindness ,hatred for Communism such a splendid opportunity was botched.
Getting back to the point,Moscow talks served in my opinion to put pressure on Germany How? I refer to secret confabulations between Horace Wilson and Goering's representive Karl Wohltat in London.Germany was told to come to terms, renounce its aggressive designs on western Europe .If not ,Berlin would be assailed on both flanks wih Russia's help. This precisely had been Hitler's nightmare. Unfortunately authors have missed this crucial point.Ultimately Moscow talks failed because West wanted Soviet Union to vouch for Poland's security without giving any reciprocal guarantees to the soviets. This made Soviets suspicious about real motives of Western leaders .The double-dealing led soviets to sign non-aggression pact with Germany. The Western democracies went to war against Germany because it committed apostasy by courting the Soviet devil. But secret channels remained open.Behind public gaze British leaders stll hoped to resurrect their secret deal this time with moderate Nazis by ousting Hitler from power.
Chamberlin policy boomeranged.Hitler reposed no faith Chamberlin ability to deliver.Nazi leader chose to free his rear before attacking Soviet Union.Appeasment policy now lay in tatters.Appendix section of the book I find it very interesting. Here authors have evaluated ,critically analysed works of other historians on Chamberlin's appeasment policy.Historians-Alan Bullock,AJP Taylor,Donald C. Watt Simon Newman ,Paul Kennedy-have exonerated the British leader of any wrong deeds by projecting him to be apostle of peace. All evidence to the contrary either fudged or ignored Why?They were reluctant to admit that leader of a Western democracy could collaborate with a dictator who was hell-bent on going to war to realise his ambitions.Such distortion of facts tantamount to pulling wool over the eyes of the public. This book has presented British politicians in the true light. These men instead of stopping Hitler shamelessly connived, collaborated ,co operated with the Nazi leader.Hyocrites, they were parially responsible for the outbreak of World War II and Holocaust that ensued.
The book represents a complete reappraisal of events leading to World War II.For me the facts contained in the book were nothing new.Having read the books of Soviet historians of war [Vladimir Trukhanovsky, Oleg Rzhevsky]I am aware of it.However this may be first time that few people in the West have come to acknowledge this unpalatable truth which for a long time dubbed communist propaganda.
Munich not appeasement! But a 'green light' for aggression!.......2000-02-09
MUNICH. APPEASEMENT. Powerful symbols. Invoked to justify questionable military adventures. What actually happened at Munich?
'In Our Time:The Chamberlain-Hitler Collusion'--based on government documents, correspondence, diaries, etc.--shatters the conventional judgment.
There is no doubt that when Hitler first violated a treaty by entering the Rhineland, a firm response would have defeated him. The French were prepared to take action but the British government wouldn't. The Tory government, anxious to eradicate communism, was willing to accommodate Hitler's aggressive appetite in eastern Europe hoping that this would lead to war with the Soviet Union.
Many books I previously read described Hitler as a genius who continually overrode the warnings of his generals. The generals were properly cautious, assuming they would meet opposition. But Hitler was aware that his anti-communism had the approval of the British establishment and that his adventures would be successful.
German opposition forces tried to convince the British, that if they and the French took a firm stance, the German military would overthrow Hitler. Chamberlain rejected their pleas.
Hitler's demands against Czechoslovakia threatened to cause a major war since France had a mutual assistance treaty with the Czechs. To defuse the crisis, Chamberlain traveled to Germany and held three meetings with Hitler. The last one, with France and Italy, produced the Munich Agreement--which sold out a reluctant but consenting Czechoslovakia.
During those meetings, Chamberlain felt he had forged a separate agreement with Hitler-which granted Hitler a "green light" for aggression in central and eastern Europe.
But public opinion in Britain was a major problem that Chamberlain defused by issuing gas masks and calling for the digging of trenches. Hitler was advised to ignore any harsh criticisms; they were made to appease the public.
Munich's lesson (the convention one) is a fraud. Chamberlain knew he was not bringing 'Peace in Our Time'. His performance was a charade to deceive an unsuspecting public. What is the real lesson. Beware of the duplicity of our leaders. Those magical PR icons--Munich, Appeasement, and the newer ones, Humanitarian Intervention, Ethnic Cleansing--should alert us that they are used to get public support for dubious activities.
For history buffs and particularly those interested in World War II, this book is an absolute MUST read.

This isn't a review. I'm co-author. It's a query. Two individuals have indicated to me that they have posted reviews of this book to you. One is Chris Brady of Chile. The other is Phillip Greenspan, I believe, of New York. Both reviewers, who are unknown to me, chose to sent me e-mail messages indicating that they had sent reviews. Brady's was last fall, Greenspan's about 2 weeks ago. I would like to know why neither of these reviews has been posted. I look forward to your reply. Alvin Finkel

Book Description
Oxfam is one of the best known and most successful charities in Britain. It is also one of the most controversial. This immensely readable history explores Oxfam's evolution from a small, local, wartime charity to Britain's largest overseas aid agency. From its initial mission to bring relief
to Greece during the darkest days of the Second World War, to the recent Charity Commission investigation into its campaigning activities, Oxfam has rarely been out of the news. Widely respected and supported, but sometimes regarded with suspicion, its humanitarian mission has never been "safe,"
whether in Africa or Vietnam, Central America or the Middle East; whether in hard-hitting fund-raising or educational activity, in nagging governments into helping famine victims or flying mercy cargoes into the teeth of conflict. In keeping with that tradition, Maggie Black, an experienced author
and journalist, explores those engagements with a critical eye. In so doing, she projects Oxfam's own development against a backdrop of changing ideas in international affairs and charitable giving of which its growth is both an inspiration and an expression.

Book Description
1855. P.T. Barnum relates a true history of his adventures and the many enterprises in which he had engaged. A very interesting and colorful man, Barnum discusses his checkered career, where he had been everything from farmer's boy to merchant, clerk to manager, show man and bank president. He had been in jails and palaces, known poverty and wealth, traveled over a large portion of two continents and had seen all varieties of people and character. A light-hearted, intriguing history which will endeavor the reader to laugh at the antics of this historical show man.
Customer Reviews:
only himself could write it.......2006-11-18
Barnum is one of my "great american heroes." This is his life in his own words, written at the peak of his fame and success, and before bad things began to make him bitter. He is cocky, bemused, hilarious and thoroughly full of beans: he knows it and revels in it. If you ever have an interest in self promotion or promotion of any kind, read this book. Learn from the greatest master of marketing of all time.
Oh what a life!.......2005-12-20
Phineas Taylor Barnum (July 5, 1810 - April 7, 1891), American showman who is best remembered for his entertaining hoaxes and for founding the circus that eventually became Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus.
In Brooklyn, New York in 1871, he established "P.T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Circus", a traveling amalgamation of circus, menagerie and museum of "freaks", which by 1872 was billing itself as "The Greatest Show on Earth".
There's a sucker born every minute" is a phrase often credited to P.T. Barnum. However, when Barnum's biographer tried to track down when Barnum had uttered this phrase, all of Barnum's friends and acquaintances told him it was out of character. Barnum's credo was more along the lines of "there's a customer born every minute" -- he wanted to find ways to draw new customers in all the time because competition was fierce and people bored easily
Barnum wrote several books, including The Humbugs of the World (1865), Struggles and Triumphs (1869), and his Autobiography (first in 1854, and later editions including 1869).
Barnum is a treat to read and is never boring! I highly recommend his books.
Disrespectful packaging of an American classic........2003-06-11
P.T. Barnum was a creative force in the worlds of advertising, museums, entertainment and finally, the circus. He was also a politician who held two high offices. He supported the northern view of the Civil War, he was anti-slavery, he constantly fought to bring the rich and powerful and regular folk together under one roof. He believed in the American Dream and that those that came to America had the curiosity to find out what was on the other side of the ocean for themselves. It was this same curiosity that led them inside museums and under the big top. He coined many phrases and terms used freely today. P.T. Barnum created worlds similar to worlds written by authors Frank L. Baum (the Oz books) and Mark Twain. Perhaps P.T. Barnum is not the best person to tell that story, but the book is a classic American tale of an American legend. Too bad it was packaged with mocking commentary on the cover and introduction which was completely inappropriate for display on one's bookshelf. It is difficult to tell why the publishers would sell the book when they have such obvious disdain for it. Everyone will always remember Barnum and not even buyers of the book will recall the names of the authors, but still, this is certainly not the way an autobiography should be published. Imagine buying a book of famous portraits only to find that the publishers have drawn mustaches on each one. As a collector, this is a waste, wait for another edition.
Communist Introduction.......2002-07-03
Even though this is the only edition of Barnum's autobiography in print it's advisable to skip this edition as the introducer is one of a proliferating number of reductive political hacks scheming at the cultural studies fringes who have weaseled into positions of "advisers" "editors" "introducers" and similar jobs extraneous to writing proper at publishing houses. Among them Caleb Crane who has used his homosexuality to secure positions at The Modern Library & NYT Book Review, S.T. Joshi leftist historical fabricator extraordinaire, and the current specimen a dogmatic Marxist who has authored a scurrilous tome purporting that Edgar Allen Poe secretly reduced the slave figures of pre civil war America, among other delusions. In doing this he follows his predecessor Rufus W. Griswold only the offences change, overdrinking was the politically incorrect gaffe in Griswolds time. What a poverty stricken outsider would gain by such activities is not explained, not even considering it's blasé materialistic crudity as interpretation. So unless you plan on ripping out the conceited Stalinist introduction avoid this book.
A Humbugger for the Ages.......2001-12-04
One of the most ambiguous figures in American history is P.T. Barnum. He was a legendary showman, curator, writer, entrepreneur--but he was also known for his humbugs. Many of his great successes were based on scamming and frauding the American public.
He was a master of marketing and advertising. His ability to manipulate the media was a precursor for much of American life in the last 150 years. Barnum had a genius for drawing in the crowd and creating scandals. He was often the one who exposed his own frauds.
This autobiography provides a fascinating glimpse into the man behind the legend and myth. Barnum begins with childhood and works his way through his life up to that point. This one is the original autobiography written in 1855. Many of his great triumphs like General Tom Thumb and the Jenny Lind tour had already taken place.
It should be remembered that Barnum is telling his own tale so it would be wise to maintain a cynical stance when reading this tale. I often found myself nodding with agreement at what I was reading and then pausing to consider that Barnum may have been hoodwinking the reader.
Overall, this is a compelling read in spite potential exaggerations. Barnum, for better or worse, is one of the most famous of all American showman. He set the stage for much of the entertainment world since his time. I found myself disdainful of some of his excesses but I came away with an overall appreciation for this man.
The American landscape is richer for having him. He has provided us with one of our greatest myths.
Book Description
On September 4, 1805, in the upper Bitterroot Valley of what is now western Montana, more than four hundred Salish people were encamped, pasturing horses, preparing for the fall bison hunt, and harvesting chokecherries as they had done for countless generations. As the Lewis and Clark expedition ventured into the territory of a sovereign Native nation, the Salish met the strangers with hospitality and vital provisions, while receiving comparatively little in return.
For the first time, a Native American community offers an in-depth examination of the events and historical significance of their encounter with the Lewis and Clark expedition. The result is a new understanding of the expedition and its place in the wider context of U.S. history. Through oral histories and other materials, Salish elders recount the details of the Salish encounter with Lewis and Clark: their difficulty communicating with the strangers through multiple interpreters and consequent misunderstanding of the expedition’s invasionary purpose, their discussions about whether to welcome or wipe out the newcomers, their puzzlement over the black skin of the slave York, and their decision to extend traditional tribal hospitality and gifts to the guests.
What makes The Salish People and the Lewis and Clark Expedition a startling departure from previous accounts of the Lewis and Clark expedition is how it depicts the arrival of non-Indians—not as the beginning of history, but as another chapter in a long tribal history. Much of this book focuses on the ancient cultural landscape and history that had already shaped the region for millennia before the arrival of Lewis and Clark. The elders begin their vivid portrait of the Salish world by sharing creation stories and their traditional cycle of life. The book then takes readers on a cultural tour of the Native trails that the expedition followed. With tribal elders as our guides, we now learn of the Salish cultural landscape that was invisible to Lewis and Clark.
The Salish People and the Lewis and Clark Expedition also portrays with new clarity the profound upheaval of the Native world in the century before the expedition's arrival, as tribes in the region were introduced to horses, European diseases, and firearms. The arrival of Lewis and Clark marked the beginning of a heightened level of conflict and loss, and the book details the history that followed the expedition: the opening of Salish territory to the fur trade; the arrival of Jesuit missionaries; the establishment of Indian reservations, the non-Indian development of western Montana; and, more recently, the revival and strengthening of tribal sovereignty and culture.
Conveyed by tribal recollections and richly illustrated, The Salish People and the Lewis and Clark Expedition not only sheds new light on the meaning of the expedition, but also illuminates the people who greeted Lewis and Clark, and, despite much of what followed, thrive in their homeland today.

The Salish People.......2006-04-10
Let me start by saying that I am pleased to own this book. An article published at the time of its release noted that it was the first of a series that the University of Nebraska is planning on American Indian tribes. If so, I will own the others as well. However, this is a book of contradictions, a fact that also complicates efforts to understand or review it. It is nicely illustrated in the style of a coffee table volume. Yet, its size and shape match few other books on my coffee table or book shelves. At first glance it looks as if it might end up on the coffee table, but the reader will find that it is much more. It is a serious cultural account of Salish history, with the tribe overseeing the content and drawing upon the elders for subject matter. The authors have inserted many phonetic representations of Salish words that, while fully explained, will interrupt the flow for casual readers. It is a mixed blessing that this book has attached itself to the Lewis and Clark theme. This book is a useful addition to the Lewis and Clark source material. True, exploiting the Lewis and Clark bicentennial will probably increase acceptance and sales. However, it obscures the broader cultural scope of the book and unfortunately will date it. Each Native American tribe (nation) has its own unique cultural history; and the cultures vary greatly. A series of books such as this, each devoted to a single tribe, will be a valuable addition to American cultural literature. It is extremely unfortunate that few non-Indians in America have more than a rudimentary understanding of our fellow citizens that we call Native Americans. This book is at a readable level that may expand American knowledge of Native Americans. On the other hand, like all of the tribes, the Salish culture is tremendously broad and deep; this book is only an introduction.
