Customer Reviews:
A tell it like it is book.......2007-04-10
This is excellent in that we had to take a good hard look at what we dreamed of doing in another part of the world..Yes the notion of living in Tuscany is very inviting..but if you are not a negotiator or have the patience to work on a project like buying or leasing from a foreign agent ..you will be very disappointed.. The book pointed out the paper work and the slow pace that they work at in Italy.. ANd we as Americans
have a tendency to demand results now..and it just doesn't work that way.
If if you had a rich relative in Italy that left you a place. I would probably take years and several translators to get the job done..It opened out eyes to situations we had not been aware of..i am so glad we bought this book..Vry honest and down to earth..covers everything...
Don't bother if you're an American!.......2003-01-21
This book is all but useless to residents of the US looking for good information about moving to Italy. The book is mostly for residents of EU countries, England most specifically. Altho there are a few items of general interest, and some mention of things pertaining to US citizens, I think it would be a waste of money for anyone who needs serious, current advice. Please note the the 2 favorable reviews are from people who are not US citizens. Save your money!
BUYING A HOME IN ITALY.......2002-11-22
A MUST-HAVE BOOK IF YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE PITFALLS AS WELL AS THE PLEASURES OF HAVING A HOME IN ITALY - THERE IS AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION, PRESENTED IN A PLEASANT AND ACCESSIBLE STYLE. WONDERFUL VALUE!
italian home buying details revealed.......2000-04-11
an informative book which unravels the mysteries of setting up home in italy. the book does not romanticise the aspects of venturing into the italian real estate market, nor does it dissuade the reader from pursuing the venture any farther. rather, the book provides an objective and practical guide to house buying in italy. it also has helpful information about everyday living in italy such as setting up a bank account. i have read several books on the subject and recommend this book thoroughly. (i also recommend victoria pybus's "living and working in italy".)
Book Description
An innovative guide that gives readers all the information you need to buy a property in Italy. Every step of the process, from organizing visas to drawing up contracts, is covered, and there is essential background on the economy, climate, and facilities. A full-color photograph section gives them a taste of Italy's different regions, aiding their decision of where in Italy to buy. Peppered with anecdotes and case studies, this guide also gives a unique, personal insight into moving to Italy.
Customer Reviews:
Real Estate Horror stories are World-wide.......2004-04-19
The book is informative and an excellent resource though some information is not correct and misleading. Many cautions and horror stories are stated but these facts apply to buying a home anywhere in the world. Dodgy real-estate agents, tradesmen and sellers can also be found world-wide though the impression given is that they are concentrated in Italy. With regards to permits and planning permission it can take up to six months if the building is classified as a Historical building but if it is not a historical building a reply is given within three months. In Italy there is a lot of red-tape and the process of purchasing a property is very different to the English system though the best advice is to have the assistance of a lawyer and use your common sense. The most important thing I learnt when buying a home in Italy is to respect the people and there custom especially if you want to make friends in the community.....of course everyone knows everyone!
Book Description
A complete guide to buying property in Italy, including where to find the perfect house and how to buy it.
Customer Reviews:
More than just buying a house.......2006-01-21
I was sent this book for Christmas since I had stayed in Tuscany and am interested in buying there. Wow! This book is like a Whole Earth Catalog for Italy. Beyond the details on how to buy a house, it's got material on living there in a way that puts you right in the middle. I loved how the author interspersed Italian words and phrases throughout the book and had various glossaries for buying a house and even gardening and dealing with builders doing renovations. I find that I can recall the words easily because of the way he put them in the context of how I would actually use them in conversation to get something I want. The wit and wisdom sidebar on Berlusconi is a real gem. His listing of things like Italian TV and radio, I mean, I can see myself living there, important in the actual determination to buy. Also, he's got Web Site addresses throughout for additional information like real estate agents by region. This is a terrific book that's fun to read and dip into. I recommend it, highly.
history ????.......2004-03-11
This book was well worth the money There are some serious mistakes when dealing with history. other then that a very usefull book.
IF ONLY.......2003-10-15
We bought a house in Cortona Italy 12 years ago only after a long hard search. IF ONLY we had Gordon Neale's book with us on that first trip hunting for the perfect house. His detailed knowledge of the intracacies of house buying law in Italy is infinite and we would have had fewer grey hairs if this book was available then
. Apart from that it is a wonderful guide from a very sympathetic student of the history, language and humanity of the Italian nation. In concise chapters he will give you the benefit of his long study and experience of the regions, their differences and special charms. The stuff this man has learned would take the casual visitor more than a life time to obtain. Here is his knowledge for you to savour at the cost of a paperback. This is not just a book for aspiring house buyers, it is an invaluable asset to anyone travelling in Italy. IF ONLY, we had had this book all those years ago, but we have it now and it brings even greater pleasure to our life Bella Italia
Please differentiate between the two Gordon Neales.......2003-10-11
As the author of this book I would like to point out that I am not the same person as my namesake who writes homoerotic novels such as "To Serve Two Masters". "Buying a House in Italy" belongs to a different genre altogether.
Perhaps Amazon could follow the example of their UK branch and put a C in front of my name on their listing to differentiate between the two Gordon Neales.
A good read.......2003-09-24
An excellent guide. I loved the sections on the history of Italy and the one on gardening.
The book is packed with information which is clearly written. It is a joy to read and a must for anyone contemplating buying a house in Italy.

Book Description
Peter Marshall was the host for 17 years of the phenomenally successful celebrity game show, The Hollywood Squares. This is the inside story from why Peter took the job (he did not want Dan Rowan to get it) to the inner workings of the show (how did Paul Lynde come up with all those jokes?). From stories about regulars Wally Cox, Rose Marie, Cliff Arquette as Charley Weaver, Nannette Fabray, and Abby Dalton to stories about the guests - Betty Grable, Helen Hayes, George C. Scott, Richard Burton, and everybody else who was anybody in Hollywood.
Hollywood Squares debuted in 1966 and became, along with The Tonight Show, one of the two shows to be on if you wanted to plug a new movie, show, or book. There are stories of friendships and romances that grew on the show, stories of what happened when the show taped in Puerto Vallarta, Vancouver, and Jamaica. There are stories of The Hollywood Squares' funniest moments and bloopers, including those that never got by the censors.
The book includes a CD of a long-out-of-print album, Zingers from The Hollywood Squares.
Backstage with the Original Hollywood Square is an insider's view of one of the most remarkable television shows of all time.
Customer Reviews:
A recapitulation of the sixteen years of the best game show ever made. .......2006-12-28
In the late sixties and seventies, Hollywood Squares was my favorite game show. It combined some of the best jokes ever heard on television with questions that really made you think. Unlike many of the current shows that use only `B' class celebrities, the biggest and best stars appeared on Squares. Even older stars such as Gloria Swanson, Bob Hope, Glenn Ford and Henny Youngman all made at least one appearance on the show.
Peter Marshall hosted the show for all sixteen years of its original run and this book is his recollection of the most memorable moments. It is not a true tell-all book; there are times when he uses the "who shall remain nameless" phrase. One of the more interesting problems that Marshall had as host was trying to get the stars, especially the comedians, to shorten their monologues. In fact, he points out that one of the most difficult stars was Jackie Mason. Not because he had an attitude problem or that he wasn't funny, but because his jokes were too long.
It is obvious that Peter Marshall truly enjoyed his job hosting Hollywood Squares. He clearly had a lot of fun and that the overwhelming majority of the stars were easy to deal with and also had fun doing the show. That was one of the characteristics that made it so appealing. In the era of celebrity nastiness and bickering, this book is a pleasant reminder that it wasn't always that way.
Great Book by Joanne Dru's Brother!!.......2004-07-15
Peter Marshall(Joanne Dru's Brother) did a superb Job writing his book along with a small biography of his life and career as a game show host.Hopefully,he might someday write or encourage a biography of his sister, the beautiful and reknowned actress Joanne Dru.It would be a labor of love and a beautiful tribute!!So spread the word!!I'm sure that a publisher somewhere, especially in her home state of West Virginia would love to publish it!!
Author, Author.......2003-09-10
An interesting document, and ok in the absence of other records of the time. It's too bad that Bill Armstrong (Squares writer, producer, legendary wit, broadly reputed source of Paul Lynde's best lines, and co-author Adrienne Armstrong's ex-husband) didn't live to have his name on a better book about a period he knew and could have described better than anyone. Unfortunately, Bill Armstrong perished, and others published.
Interesting Read, But A Bit Short.......2003-08-10
Game show host Peter Marshall sheds some light on the famous game show and you can't lose with this much information to draw on. However, there are some missing goodies.
We are treated to a somewhat humble biography about Peter Marchall, but it's mostly forgettable fluff. Every celebrity from the show is listed in the voluminous Index with a select handful being recognized with a page or two of biographical information. Most notable are Rose Marie, Dolly Parton, Vincent Price, Alice Cooper, Wally Cox, Milton Berle, Ruth Buzzie, Jonathan Winters and, of course, Paul Lynde. Marshall mentions tons of jokes that each celebrity has aired with some funny personal facts as well. The jokes are truly funny, but we learn that most of them were not written by the stars and no credibility is given to those that did. You might think that some interesting personal trivia would be exposed, but Marshall is very protective of his gang. Even Paul Lynde's widely known personal sexual life is ignored, covered by Marshall's proclaimed naivety and replaced with a story about Paul's devotion to his dog.
It's still a great quick read full of jokes and some vintage pictures form the sixties and seventies. One of the highlights is a CD included that has 45 minutes of jokes from the television show. It's not Dolby Surround Sound by any means, but the point is the jokes and delivery and they are real side-splitters.
Example: Q: What fictional character ran around screaming, "I'm late, "I'm late"? Paul Lynde: That was Alice, and her mother's sick about it.
A trip down memory lane.......2003-08-01
In the days when tv emcees were over-emotive, phony-sounding or even grumpy, Peter Marshall always came across as one of the "regular, nice" ones. His book, "Backstage with the Original Hollywood Square" is chock full of the show's anecdotes and the stories of what happened not only on the set but behind it, too. I read it from cover to cover without even thinking of putting it down for a second.
Marshall, who was host of the show for seventeen years, spares no one. He tells of the stars he liked and disliked. It's hard to read that the favorite star of many fans, Paul Lynde, was difficult, hard to please and drank so much of the time. But Marshall has kind words for Paul Lynde as he does for so many of those with whom he worked. I was particularly interested to find out how the stars "developed" their answers so quickly and so comically. That revleation was worth the whole book.
And Marshall delves into the inner workings of how the show came about, its producers and all those who made the show such a success. The book is written in a breezy style and it keeps the reader interested at every level. The icing on the cake is the CD which is included. Forty-five minutes of "outtakes" from the show are recorded and had me in hysterics the whole time.
Thank you, Peter Marshall, for helping us to remember what a great show "Hollywood Squares" was. I'm glad you're still having fun with it all these years later!

Book Description
At the end of the Ice Age, small groups of hunter-gatherers crossed from Siberia to Alaska and opened the last chapter in the human settlement of the earth. Many left little or no trace. But one group--the Early Paleo-Indians--exploded suddenly on the archaeological record about 11,500 years ago and expanded rapidly throughout North America and, eventually, into South America.
Journey to the Ice Age focuses on the Early Paleo-Indians of northeastern North America. A revealing, autobiographical account, it is at once a captivating record of Storck's archaeological discoveries, as well as an introduction to the practice, challenges, and spirit of archaeology.
