Guts and Greed.......2000-07-10
This thoroughly researched account of John Smith T is much more than a biography. The reader is introduced to an unsettling chapter in American history when the thirst for wealth and power resulted in treachery, murder, and warfare under the guise of westward expansion for the common good. Insight is offered into the ties between Tennessee, Missouri, and Texas power brokers as well as the inablility of the Federal Government to control land-grabbing conspiracies. "Frontier Swashbuckler" paints and intirely different picture of early settlement than the noble mountain man and covered wagon we're more familiar with.
Frontier Swashbuckler : The Life and Legend of John Smith T.......2000-02-06
This book is a MUST read for those interested in USA and/or Missouri frontier history. Dr. Steward has a penchant to use highly descriptive word usage, which adds greatly to the reader's learning experience.

Book Description
The original DNB was compiled between 1885 and 1900. Three supplementary volumes containing entrants who had missed their alphabetical sequence were published almost immediately. The Twentieth-Century Supplements are confined to those who have died within the decade or half-decade represented. There have been many men and women, however, who acquired posthumous fame, or whose achievements failed to come to the attention of the editors of the time, or whose significance scholarship has only recently revealed. This volume includes 1,086 such people from all periods of British history and from all walks of life. Including much biographical information not readily available elsewhere, this volume includes such famous names as Wilfred Owen, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Sylvia Pankhurst, Guy Burgess, Thomas Traherne, J. C. Bach, Anna Pavlova, Sylvia Plath, Charles Laughton, and Stan Laurel. In addition to drawing on the fruits of recent scholarship, the Supplement also reflects changes in social outlook, witness the inclusion of proportionately nearly four times as many women here as in the original DNB.

Pretty good book.......2001-06-06
This book has some good information for anyone considering purchasing a home in France. It's aimed more towards a U.K. citizen, versus a U.S. citizen, but I still found it helpful. Some of the info. applies only to purchases of 'flats' (apartments) and not houses, but he doesn't tell you that. I found out after asking for some of the documentation he mentions. I would recommend the book to anyone considering the purchase of a French property -- get it early so you do it right!
an absolute necessity..........1999-12-15
...if you're thinking about buying property in France. Hampshire is totally on target. I read his book before going through the buying process, and couldn't believe how perfectly his advice dovetailed with my actual experience.
All his information was exactly correct!.......1999-09-24
We JUST (September '99) bought an apartment in Paris, using this book as a daily reference. It helped us immensely, giving us confidence in many procedures from looking for a place initially to the closing, including geat information on insurance and utilities. Definitely a great source!
Book Description
Deals with the details of buying or renting a home in France in a practical, straight-forward style. Covers financial issues such as mortgages available for the house buyer; French tax laws; choosing a location; issues in purchasing or renting; and health and education in France.

Customer Reviews:
Real Estate Horror stories are World-wide.......2004-04-19
The book is informative and an excellent resource though some information is not correct and misleading. Many cautions and horror stories are stated but these facts apply to buying a home anywhere in the world. Dodgy real-estate agents, tradesmen and sellers can also be found world-wide though the impression given is that they are concentrated in Italy. With regards to permits and planning permission it can take up to six months if the building is classified as a Historical building but if it is not a historical building a reply is given within three months. In Italy there is a lot of red-tape and the process of purchasing a property is very different to the English system though the best advice is to have the assistance of a lawyer and use your common sense. The most important thing I learnt when buying a home in Italy is to respect the people and there custom especially if you want to make friends in the community.....of course everyone knows everyone!
Book Description
A complete guide to buying property in Italy, including where to find the perfect house and how to buy it.
Customer Reviews:
More than just buying a house.......2006-01-21
I was sent this book for Christmas since I had stayed in Tuscany and am interested in buying there. Wow! This book is like a Whole Earth Catalog for Italy. Beyond the details on how to buy a house, it's got material on living there in a way that puts you right in the middle. I loved how the author interspersed Italian words and phrases throughout the book and had various glossaries for buying a house and even gardening and dealing with builders doing renovations. I find that I can recall the words easily because of the way he put them in the context of how I would actually use them in conversation to get something I want. The wit and wisdom sidebar on Berlusconi is a real gem. His listing of things like Italian TV and radio, I mean, I can see myself living there, important in the actual determination to buy. Also, he's got Web Site addresses throughout for additional information like real estate agents by region. This is a terrific book that's fun to read and dip into. I recommend it, highly.
history ????.......2004-03-11
This book was well worth the money There are some serious mistakes when dealing with history. other then that a very usefull book.
IF ONLY.......2003-10-15
We bought a house in Cortona Italy 12 years ago only after a long hard search. IF ONLY we had Gordon Neale's book with us on that first trip hunting for the perfect house. His detailed knowledge of the intracacies of house buying law in Italy is infinite and we would have had fewer grey hairs if this book was available then
. Apart from that it is a wonderful guide from a very sympathetic student of the history, language and humanity of the Italian nation. In concise chapters he will give you the benefit of his long study and experience of the regions, their differences and special charms. The stuff this man has learned would take the casual visitor more than a life time to obtain. Here is his knowledge for you to savour at the cost of a paperback. This is not just a book for aspiring house buyers, it is an invaluable asset to anyone travelling in Italy. IF ONLY, we had had this book all those years ago, but we have it now and it brings even greater pleasure to our life Bella Italia
Please differentiate between the two Gordon Neales.......2003-10-11
As the author of this book I would like to point out that I am not the same person as my namesake who writes homoerotic novels such as "To Serve Two Masters". "Buying a House in Italy" belongs to a different genre altogether.
Perhaps Amazon could follow the example of their UK branch and put a C in front of my name on their listing to differentiate between the two Gordon Neales.
A good read.......2003-09-24
An excellent guide. I loved the sections on the history of Italy and the one on gardening.
The book is packed with information which is clearly written. It is a joy to read and a must for anyone contemplating buying a house in Italy.

One of the best, but..........2005-08-27
I am looking to invest in property in Portugal and this book is proving to be really useful. It provides excellent guidance on all sorts of aspects from choosing a location for your Portuguese home to working and setting up a business.
It gives good guidance on the legal and financial aspects of the purchase, including mortgage, which can be somewhat difficult in a foreign country. Also additional information on tax and other important legal considerations. It goes much further, with sections on renovating, letting and selling, a bit too early for me but good to be able to read about it.
I would say there is only one weak point in this book, the advice on learning the language. I speak Portuguese and my recommendations would be quite different. This said, the book directs readers to specialist booksellers where they can see for themselves and choose the best suited course to their needs.

Customer Reviews:
Not very useful.......2002-12-27
the book is a below average tour book. This book has very little value, if any in purchasing a home in Greece. There is a half page in the book about purchase contracts. no mention of costs, taxes, closing fees etc. It would have been nice if they had an example of a closing statement. Throughout the book they bold stuff that they think is very important. Almost all of this is common sense that you could find in any real estate book in any country. example: If you can't make any appointment call and cancel. another, If you don't know where you want to live, rent first. Even the references in the back are poor. You would do much better by calling the tourist office and telling them, you wanted to buy a home in Greece and wanted information. Overall, this book is extremely general, given little or no details about real estate in Greece and has no value. Don't waste your time.

Book Description
A lavishly illustrated biographical essay on the peerless Billie Holiday, drawing on never-before-published material
"Billie Holiday deserves a biography in which her musicianship isn't overshadowed by the tragic events of her life. O'Meally has written that book," says Entertainment Weekly about this absorbing and authoritative account of the greatest jazz singer in history. O'Meally emphasizes Holiday's artistry and training rather than her personal miseries, and he uses voluminous archival material to correct common myths about Holiday. Chronicling her rigorous musical apprenticeship in Baltimore, her reception in New York by Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington, and her work with various musicians, particularly Lester Young, Lady Day is an impassioned testament to Holiday's genius that confirms her place in American jazz.
Customer Reviews:
Pure Genius.......2003-04-21
The reason this book is so powerful is the perfect
melding of photographs and text.
The author's rich, empathetic text makes plain Billie
Holiday's genius as an artist and, unlike some of the
so-called biographies of her life, don't simplify her to
the point of caricature.
Mr. O'Meally focuses on what makes Billie Holiday special:
her total mastery of her craft and her ability to share
her vision of the world through song.
It's her music that made her special. . ........2001-11-29
Tired of all the treatments of Holiday's life in film and print that forget it was her music that made her special, I was delighted to find Professor O'Meally's book. Fascinated with Holiday's life as musician, I had been routinely disappointed whenever I picked up a book or movie in hope of discovering more about her musicianship and less about the tragedies in her life. The book never loses its focus in this respect, making it quite unique.
What made this book even more enjoyable for me to read is that almost ten years ago I was fortunate enough to have taken a class taught by Professor O'Meally. His book conveys the same enthusiasm and passion he had for the subject matter and classes he taught and, no doubt, passed on to his students.
Well researched, with attention to her music.......1997-08-25
Probably one of the best all-round bios of Lady Day, covering the personal and professional. Pays attention to her musical preferences and reasoning behind her unique recording style

Book Description
Elsie Sark, an enigma and a legend, came to the Lennox Island Reserve, Prince Edward Island, in 1918 as the English bride of Mi'kmaq war hero John J. Sark.
Greeted on arrival by her father-in-law Chief John T. Sark and an assembly of Mi'kmaq residents, she found herself in the midst of a community in conflict. Without relinquishing her Victorian manner she settled on the Reserve, raising a family. Her life story sheds new light on Native-white relations on Prince Edward Island, but more than that, it bears witness to one woman's dedication to her community and family.
Micmac by Choice is the inspiring account of a remarkable woman and of the remarkable community she chose as her home.
