Its simple, direct and every word in it is important. once you read it, you will not leave it without finishing it. very exciting to read if you are curious about how those companies work together to make games or the processing of making games.

The guys who wrote this book are working for Activision which is one of the best companies in the game industry.

Game Plan, a tag-team effort between Alan Gershenfeld, Mark Loparco, and Cecilia Barajas, is a detailed account of what developers, publishers, and all other aspects of the game making market, are interested in for new recruits. If you don't know the difference between a developer and a publisher, this is the book for you. It starts out on the basic of basic of levels, defining everything, from game console to mmo.

If on the other hand, you have been in the market for some years, and are seeking to forward your career, this is the book for you. It explains what you should do to get noticed by the big guys. It explains what you should do to get your dream game made, so you can sit in front of your screen for days on end, staring in awe, at the your own idea, made into a multi-million dollar production, making sky-rocket sales.

Or, if you just like to read for the heck of it, read this. That is, assuming you don't absolutely hate video games and everything to do with them, at the very bottom of your heart. As I was reading it, this book ended up getting me so excited, I was ready to go home and teach myself programming with nothing but an online manual, an open-source language, and 2 hours. But of course, that didn't work out.

An excellent and interesting read, which may or may not keep you up at night, depending on your devotion and drive to create games, and that stands for a lot, considering it is a non-fiction book, which I normally despise.

5 out of 5 stars Great little book.......2006-03-02

This 280 pages are for sure the most simple, direct and usefull text about the game development careers. We not only get the all picture, also great advices and directions in what we have as options in this game business, I recommend this reading not only for programmers (like me) but to everybody who feel lost and is looking for some path to follow. I tooked 2 days to read it, very clear writing.

5 out of 5 stars Full of details, I couldn't put this book down........2005-08-01

I am currently attending college for a BA in game software engineering. I saw this book and I knew I had to read it. The authors are very knowledgeable about the game industry. I am really impressed with the amount of resources listed in the back with websites, schools, software companies addresses, and suggested readings. This book is perfect for anyone looking to break in. I finished the 280 pg book in less than 2 days. It is written very well, and it is very easy to follow. I will be using this book for a long time to come.

3 out of 5 stars Light on Content.......2005-04-26

Good book for someone who's never been in a computer-related field and never been into gaming but now wants to get into games. But how many people like there are there?

I would argue that most people who want to get into the game industry are either in another tech. industry or are gamers. Either way, most of the content in this book is obvious and can be found on the web with minimal effort.

True - it's not a very expensive book. But even so - I felt a little cheated....

5 out of 5 stars Carefully researched and entertaining biography........1997-10-16

Nichols has presented a well researched biography of a man who commanded the respect and the admiration of an army. The men who fought under him called him "Old Common Sense." They were willing to follow him into Hell itself, and they did. John F. Reynolds was professionally remote, militarily a genius, and personally a shy quiet man. Nichols brings Reynolds to warm life once again in this entertaining and well written biography. You will feel as if you know this general who turned down command of the entire Army of the Potomac, only to die a month later leading a regiment into combat because "that's where he was most needed." You will stand beside the Confederate prisoners of war who rose to their feet in silent respect as the dead Reynolds was carried past them. An inspiring picture of a man whose death made an army pause to weep.

                Book Description

Japan's rise from the ashes of defeat in the Second World War to its position now as one of the world's foremost economies has long been recognized as one of the most startling turnarounds of the 20th Century. With economic reform again at the top of the global agenda with the fall of the Soviet bloc and the continuing struggle of the developing nations, the lessons of Japan's success have never been more valuable. This volume looks closely at the origins of the current Japanese economic system, focusing particularly on the contrast between the war period of 1930-1945 and the preceding situation. The contributors argue that Japan had an `Anglo-Saxon model' economy until the 1930s, and that the special features of the Japanese system -- good labour relations; employee-based corporate governance; the main banks' financial system; and the principle of `administrative guidance' -- were all deliberately created during militarization. Although there are many post-war factors that have led to the present-day Japanese situation -- the Dodge Plan, high post-war inflation, new technology, massive shifts in the labour force, deregulation from the 1960s onwards -- without the reforms introduced between 1930 and 1945 there would be no `Japanese system'.

                  Book Description

In the mid-seventies, the Sex Pistols, the most controversial rock-and-roll band ever, erupted out of London, offending everyone from members of Parliament to the rock establishment it sought to unseat. With its raw, anarchic sounds, aura of sex and violence, outrageous behavior, and concerts that frequently degenerated into near-riots, the band changed the rules of rock-and-roll forever. Add to that the early death of band member Sid Vicious, by heroin overdose, and you have all the ingredients for a legend.

In January 1978, the Sex Pistols came to the United States for a twelve-day tour, mostly of cities in the Deep South. 12 Days on the Road is an extraordinary moment-by-moment re-creation of that wild adventure by Noel E. Monk, the Sex Pistols' American tour manager, and veteran journalist Jimmy Guterman. Here is a sensational, "explosive chapter in the history of rock" (Booklist) that is also "a touching and improbable tale of innocence and exploitation" (Kirkus Reviews).

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent - With A Grain of Salt.......2006-12-24

It's a bit disconcerting to read a factual book where the author speaks of himself in the third person. Consequently he relates events and conversations for which he wasn't present, and he offers up thoughts from inside other people's heads - all stuff he could surmise, yet he presents as factual.

Nevertheless, it's an easy read, fascinating and there are enough anecdotes, stories and reflections from Monk when he WAS present for me to excuse the weird third party narrative and its liberties.

For a group that made history through its message and method, most of the stories show what lost little boys they were: Cook's and Jones's behavior on the San Francisco radio interview, the band's excitement about Texas and its myths, and Sid's delusions and problems - detailed (Monk was his babysitter). A few particularly striking groupie stories.

I liked it. I ate it up. I read parts of it twice. They were totally gross, uniquely absorbing and I love their music. Along with Lydon's book, it's part of my permanent book collection.

4 out of 5 stars The Road Less Travelled.......2006-09-11

This is a hilarious recounting of the one and only U.S. tour of the Sex Pistols written by the road manager Noel Monk. It has to be funny, because it would be too disgusting otherwise. Monk has his work cut out for him, and faces countless thankless tasks with the dedication of a platoon sergeant under fire.

Don't miss the sweeping irony of the underlying theme that the smelly, rude, uneducated, tasteless and surprisingly poor Sex Pistols have contempt for their Southern White audience members. Even these low-lifes can jump in on one of America's last two permissible prejudices: disdain for poor white southerners (the other permissible prejudice is against Catholics).

Highlights include Sid Vicious's multiple disappearances, a pathetic radio interview where two of the Pistols were promised leather jackets to complete, and the mysterious and zonked out founder of High Times tagging along trying to insert himself into the tour for Lord knows what agenda. An excellent recounting and an excellent example of the trope that history is far more bizarre than anything your imagination can conceive.

5 out of 5 stars Who needs a car when you got the bus!!.......2006-06-24

One of the best accounts of the last remaining days of the Sex Pistols. Want to know what happened on the bus when Sid was having herion seperation? or Why Johnny and Sid were sometimes close as brothers but hated eachother another minute? This book tells a lot of missing information from other books. From the boycotting Christians in Tulsa to the days when Sid took off to find herion and a good lay, this book is there to tell it all.

3 out of 5 stars Sex, bugs and rock n roll.......2006-02-28

12 Days on the Road may not be the most complete and earth-shattering account of the Sex Pistols and their famous American tour (guess how long it lasted?). But there's enough in it, and it's well-written enough, to be worth taking the time to read.

Mostly, if you would be interested in the subject matter, there is very little that you would find new. I mean, we know Malcolm was the puppet master and a jerk. We know Sid was dumb and Johnny was smart. We know they went to the south for shock value and were pelted with cans and threw up and wouldn't take baths.

That said, it's a quick book to read, so why not?

And there were some little tidbits that were interesting. That they earned only $66 for their final concert in San Francisco. That Sid wanted money to get Nancy plastic surgery. Not because she wasn't beautiful to him, but to get a birthmark off her butt so she could strip and earn more money.

There were one topic where I thought this book delved a little deeper, and where it really succeeded. The topic really is more of a conundrum: How can one be anti-establishment, anti-rock and roll, anti-everything, and go on a music tour, and sustain both the tour and the attitude?

                  It's really impossible.

The book described the Sex Pistols in Memphis, the birthplace of rock and roll.

"As much as Rotten and McLaren want their band to be the one that cuts rock and roll...in two, the Sex Pistols are part of the tradition, whether they like it or not."

Was it a good or bad thing for punk when early rockers like Carl Perkins say things like, "The Sex Pistols' music is almost like some of the fifties-style stuff, it's so simple. I didn't understand what they mean by sticking pins through their noses, but they never cover up that basic thing, which is the beat that makes kids tap their feet or get up on the dance floor."

Late in the tour, a middle-age couple running a truck stop tell them they love the Sex Pistols, they think they are great.

The book describes the scene and goes further:

"The compliment is Rotten's worst nightmare. They have come to destroy a country's complacency, and two complacents have just given them their support. Johnny's head spins. Do I want them to love me or hate me? Am I Rod Stewart? Why are we doing this? What's the end result? His self-doubts continue to mulitply, and there's no one on the bus with whom he can share them."

4 out of 5 stars 12 Days in Rock and Roll.......2004-03-29

The Pistols' disintegration during its US tour had taken its place in the annals of rock and roll some time ago, and this book is just one examination of it. Written by an eyewitness/accessory, Noel Monk, TWELVE DAYS ON THE ROAD WITH THE SEX PISTOLS IN AMERICA, is an attempt to chronicle the mess. Whether you loved the Pistols (as I did) or loathed them, there is no overstating the band's importance in saving rock and roll from itself. But that redemption came at a price, as this book shows. Exploited by the record label, mismanaged by everyone, preyed upon by publicity hounds, and too young to defend itself, Mr. Monk makes it plain that the band was doomed from the very moment they landed in America.

But like all "Great Moments in Rock and Roll", history blurs with legend, and sometimes the book provokes skepticism. On the other hand, the book demonstrates a lot of sincerity, and the photos are well worth the price of the book. It's a quick read of a significant moment, not just in punk history, but in the history of rock.

                    Book Description

The U.S.S. Monitor was an entirely new type of warship when it launched in 1862. Dubbed "the forefather of the modern Navy," this ironclad ship changed how wars are fought at sea. But on New Year's Eve, 1862, it sank off the coast of North Carolina in a terrible storm. No one thought the Monitor could be raised, but after 140 years, parts of the ironclad have finally been brought to the surface. This book chronicles the Monitor's revolutionary design, exciting battle, and intriguing excavation.

                                          Book Description

Reinterpreting the first century of American history, Brendan McConville argues that colonial society developed a political culture marked by strong attachment to Great Britain's monarchs. This intense allegiance continued almost until the moment of independence, an event defined by an emotional break with the king. By reading American history forward from the seventeenth century rather than backward from the Revolution, McConville shows that political conflicts long assumed to foreshadow the events of 1776 were in fact fought out by factions who invoked competing visions of the king and appropriated royal rites rather than used abstract republican rights or pro-democratic proclamations. The American Revolution, McConville contends, emerged out of the fissure caused by the unstable mix of affective attachments to the king and a weak imperial government. Sure to provoke debate, The King's Three Faces offers a powerful counterthesis to the dominant American historiography.

The second edition not only includes the new laws enacted but also several of the forms needed to manage a planned community. The book is in a larger, easier to read format. Planned Community Living is essential for those who want to expand their knowledge of the law and issues which govern their everyday lives.

I think I have found the best kept secret in this growing circle of CA homeowner's associations - John Linford's "Planned Community Living." Whether it is deciphering foreign acronyms and terms (i.e. CID, CCR, appurtenant interests, indemnification), dealing with power-hungry board members, or trying to settle a seemingly simple dispute over the height of a fence - this book finally helped me understand the foundational issues surrounding the places where many of us live. Buying and settling into a home is agonizing enough. Dealing with escrow, title, loan managers and realtors will test our patience. Add on top of this the "association" with their dues, covenants, conditions and restrictions, and I soon wondered where my freedom went of owning my own home. There are many benefits, like privacy, golf courses and swimming pools, but this was like walking into a foreign country without my Berlitz. The best time to read this book is before you commit yourself to living in a planned community. But, buy it anyway, even if you have already started paying your dues. It will help you navigate the legal side so that you can understand the issues and stand on solid ground when presenting your concerns. I recommended this book to one friend who was thinking about becoming a member of a homeowner's association and another who was already a board member. Both thanked me! Another plus, is that the publisher provides an annual update, discussing all the new laws each year that affect property owners and homeowners association. This is a real estate textbook worth 5x the asking price. It should be included in the package for every new homeowner, board member or property manager. There is a downside to the author if this were to happen......the annual association's legal fees would probably decrease substantially! What can I say - buy it!

Linford's explanations of how to successfully live within homowners associations are detailed yet simple enough for the layman. This is a great book to have on your bookshelf as a reference.

Seventy-one million Americans watched Richard Hatch win $1 million on the Survivor television series during the summer of 2000. He was the brilliant strategist and ruthless manipulator that viewers loved to hate. Then Hatch's $500,000 book deal to spill the inside secrets of his Survivor strategies and his life story got throttled by CBS. Trampled in the scuffle was Hatch's cowriter, five-time Emmy-winning investigative journalist Peter Lance. Hatch had led him to believe that CBS permission was in the bag, and Lance had already spent months working on the book when the deal died. So Lance went ahead and wrote his own book, full of those delectably greasy little details that Survivor fans hunger for, and including his own first-person observations. He provides a day-by-day commentary on the series, exposes several sides of Richard Hatch that we didn't see, and offers disturbing evidence that CBS manipulated events and people.

Lance knew "Dickie" Hatch as a child and is compassionate when detailing his early life. Hatch was an overweight, lonely child, wearing Coke-bottle thick glasses, sexually victimized by bullies before age 10, smoking pot and cigarettes by sixth grade, and becoming a "serious drinker" as an adult. (Hatch no longer drinks or smokes.) The Stingray does not flatter the present-day Richard Hatch, however, calling him "villainous" and a liar (off the series as well as on). Lance quotes a management consultant describing Hatch as "a wild animal who went to school." "King Richard" was brilliant at winning the throne through "guile, deceit and the strength of his will," says Lance, but "he behaved like a hick on a Starline Hollywood Tour when it came to using his fame as a launching pad for the rest of his life."

Lance reveals CBS's stranglehold on the castaways' ability to earn money post-Survivor by gatekeeping every offer and rejecting all that competed with CBS programming or sponsors. He offers unsettling substantiation that CBS distorted events, shifted the sequence of scenes, and may have tainted the voting. The book's organization seems hasty and haphazard at times, with topics frequently raised in one chapter and revisited in another. But if you're a Survivor devotee, this is a must-read. The title refers to the way Hatch compared his skewering stingrays for food to his treatment of the other castaways: "Stab. Blood in the water. Bye bye baby." --Joan Price

                                                  Book Description

THE STINGRAY is the unauthorized biography of "Survivor" winner Richard Hatch, covering not only his life, his tactics that won him the prize in the CBS-TV show "Survivor," but what happened to him after the show when he finally came to Hollywood for the big payoff. It was a payoff that never happened, the author explains and documents in a Capra-esque story which reveals that even the lethal strategies of a corporate trainer don't match up to the even more lethal tactics of network television. THE STINGRAY also goes behind the scenes on the island to show readers what they, as viewers, never saw.

What aggressive capitalism has always taught is that it is ruthlessness (often accompanied by the hard hearted deception and immorality, or inhumanity) that determines the winner in a game of winner take all - the one that equates with being a sole survivor. Above all, it make be the distinction of why most women do not succeed, and why they reach a point where morality and integrity are not worth sacrificing - for the win. For women who are able to yield, or are so ambitious that winning is everything, they tend to exist among the more predatory alpha males who reside among us, often doing quite well, it seems. Often characterized as the pirannas they are, however, they are also mocked by men for using the same methods, and inconsistent with the attributes that have been traditionally favored by men (and by women) as attractive and acceptable. But if women prefer not to be alone, why would they use these tactics to be a "sole" survivor. In fact, why would men want to be a "sole" survivor in the form of lone wolves when mankind lives a "community life?" Disassociation is not normal or healthy, and may be one of the greatest flaws of aggressive capitalism, that encourages the predatory nature of men, or of women. Harmony produces peace, not war and most prefer to live peaceful lives of pleasurable pursuits.

                                                  2 out of 5 stars Richard's Revenge.......2003-01-04

To read this sort of stuff, you really have to be a "Survivor" junkie, and I qualify. I have been with it since the start and don't believe I have missed an episode (though some were eminently missable!).

"The Stingray" came out hoping to capitalize on first "Survivor" winner Richard Hatch's instant fame. The author's big beef is 1) CBS has Survivor cast members so locked up, it's a wonder they can even renew their drivers' license and 2) Richard Hatch "strung him along" and a $500,000 book deal sunk from sight because Richard either was unaware of the lock CBS had on him or thought he could get around it.

Mr. Lance never considers that maybe Richard Hatch was also bummed out about losing $500,000. The book is basically one long whine. Lance constantly reminds us he is a multiple award winning "investigative journalist" and Hatch is well---chopped liver. Richard is a fascinating subject, a man that has reinvented himself more times than you can count, very bright, self-destructive, and some of this information is presented.

Awards aside, this book is atrociously edited and hardly a page goes by without major typos and misspellings. The organization is non-existent. Mr. Lance is much given to "More on THIS later" type statements, only there never is any "more." The author constantly zings Hatch with "you knew how to win a million dollars; but you didn't know what to do after you got it."

Well, now it is two years later. Richard seems to be doing ok, and he has been resurrected as the Prime Survivor. All other Survivors are compared to Richard and found lacking. Latest Survivor winner Brian Haydik, who could probably give a whole new meaning to the phrase "coldly ambitious", is believed to have modeled his strategy on Hatch's game. At the time of Richard's win, he was the man you loved to hate, and Peter Lance sneered that would be his undoing. Not necessarily so. Viewers gradually realized you could be Charley-nice-guy and get booted off the island, or you could Outwit, Outplay, and Out Mean everyone else and come home with a million dollars.

Many of the interviews in this book are second-hand, even at the time the book was printed. I gave the book a second star for the occasional insights into Hatch's character. Otherwise, a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars Peter Lance breaks the Survivor scandal wide open!.......2001-06-13

After ordering The Stingray, Peter Lance's blistering expose of the fraud behind Survivor, I cracked the book open to check the introduction. Three hours later I was breathlessly moving through the final pages. This is a major work of investigative journalism that reads like a page turning thriller. If you go to his website..., you'll see that Lance first broke the charges of Mark Burnett's fixing of Stacey Stillman's vote last fall when his book first came out. He then developed a source inside Survivor II and first revealed the names of the tribes Kucha and Ogakor.

...Lance first introduced the world to the names of Jerri Manthey, Keith Famie, et. al, weeks before CBS. And in Feburary when Stacey sued CBS, the headlines were a vindication for Lance, who had the guts to suggest that Survivor was manipulated months before anyone else. Even the latest revelation of Dirk Been's transcript came after Peter Lance filed a Motion to unseal the transcript which CBS had tried to keep secret. It's no wonder. Now we have evidence, not just from one castaway (Stacey) but from Dirk Been, the bible reading dairy farmer that Mark Burnett was right there inside influencing the votes.

...But so far, nobody has challenged a single fact that Peter Lance has uncovered.

The Stingray is a must read, not just for Survivor fans, but for television watchers in general, reality show junkies and anybody that's interested in seeing the lid ripped off the biggest show on television. This book is a scortching expose.

Don't be fooled by reviews like the one below. The Stingray is a rip roaring ride through the twist and turns of what could turn out to be another major quiz show scandal.

2 out of 5 stars Very poorly written; editing nonexistent.......2001-05-16

It is hard to judge the merits of a book in which typographical errors abound on each page. Worse, the author doesn't know the difference between "elude" and "allude", nor "effect" and "affect." His punctuation is bizarre. Sentence fragments abound.

Clearly, this book was rushed to press to capitalize on Survivor's current popularity.

If you are looking for new information on Survivor, or facts and the life history of Richard Hatch, look elsewhere. Throughout the book, the author repeatedly says "more on that later" or "we'll get to that soon" -- yet never does.

I'm glad I borrowed this book from a friend and didn't pay my own cold hard cash for it.

                                                    Book Description

N.F.S. Grundtvig, a chief shaper of Denmark's modern identity and still an active force in Danish social, political and religious life, was an outstanding intellect of the European 19th century. As new-Europe reviews the old traditional cultural canon, reflective of the most dominant nations, interest grows in Grundtvig. The book comprises English translations of an extensive selection of Grundtvig's own retrospect upon events, causes and periods of his life, and of memoirs by contemporaries upon whose lives his impinged. The choice of texts follows closely that of Johansen and Høirup's Grundtvigs Erindringer og Erindringer om Grundtvig (Copenhagen 1948). Texts are arranged in an approximate chronology of Grundtvig's life. A copious index supplies mini-biographies and other documentation of the period, its personalities, institutions and events.
