Book Description
Trained as a physician and ordained an Episcopal priest, Charles Todd Quintard (1824-1898) was born, raised and educated in the North. He migrated to the South to pursue a medical career but was inspired by the bishop of Tennessee to serve the church. In May 1861, Quintard joined the Confederate 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment as its chaplain and during the maelstrom of the Civil War kept a diary if his experiences. He later penned a memoir, which was published posthumously in 1905. With thoughtful editing and annotating, Sam Davis Elliott combines a previously unpublished portion of the diary with Quintard's memoir in Doctor Quintard, Chaplain C.S.A. and Second Bishop of Tennessee.
Quintard was present during the early fighting in Virginia, marched into Kentucky with Braxton Bragg, and attended to the wounded at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga. He met such diverse personages as Robert E. Lee and Federal Major General James H. Wilson; prayed with Leonidas Polk and John Bell Hood; and shared a bed once with Nathan Bedford Forrest. Throughout the war, he organized hospitals and relief efforts, filled in as a parish priest, and served as chaplain at large of the Army of Tennessee.
These interesting and lively war-year remembrances of one of the Confederacy's most exceptional characters shed new light on the little-known western theater's military, civilian, and religious fronts.
Customer Reviews:
Great Tennessee History!.......2004-01-01
I truly enjoyed this book. Is the personal narrative of rev. Charles Todd Quintard who fought for the Confederacy in the Army of Tennessee. Dr. Quintard had several good uses in the army: one is that he was a doctor that had practiced medicine, another is that he was a fine chaplain. He had some personal friendship with some of the Confederate generals. One night he and General Kirby Smith went together to a church. They both knelt and prayed that the war would soon come to an end. These are stories that I will never forget. Dr. Quintard published a little devotional book called "Balm For The Weary and The Wounded". He sent this little booklet out to the men in the Army of Tennessee. Sam R. Watkins who wrote "Co. Aytch" praised Quintard highly for helping to lift the spirits of the men. Quintard ran several Confederate army hospitals.
This book is great reading for fun and information.
A loved religious leader.......2003-09-25
A smorgastborg of material - a memoir, a short diary, generous identifying footnotes, a lengthy bibliography, a name index - present the war and post-war experiences of Charles Todd Quintard. Read this for a sense of the fervent religious climate of the times and one of the great men who nurtured it.

Book Description
International television and singing star Marie Osmond candidly discusses her personal journey through post-partum depression and includes the methods that helped her cope. While the famous Osmond smile beamed for the camera, no one, not even Marie, fully realized the emptiness that loomed behind the smile. Marie is not alone; more than one out of ten new mothers experiences post-partum de-pression (PPD) after childbirth. The mother of seven, Marie became increasingly depressed after the birth of her youngest child. One night, she got in her car, leaving her family and husband, and drove northwith no intention of returning until she felt she had resolved this crisis. After she went public with her own experiences with PPD on Oprah and Larry King Live, the response was overwhelming. Now, Marie shares the fear and darkness of the depression she overcame, and with the doctor who helped her through her ordeal, offers the methods she learned for treating PPD.
Customer Reviews:
A Thought Provoking Book!.......2007-07-06
A must read for all mothers about to be a grandmother. It certainly opened my eyes to the symptoms of postpartum depression, and how to be of help to a daughter, daughter-in-law, or new mother if they have postpartum depression.
I would definitely recommend this book to new fathers, and grandfathers.
I give Marie Osmond much courage by coming out in the open with her problem recognizing that she can be helpful to other mothers who suffer as she has, and realize that there is help for them.
Marie's brave story is an inspiring read.......2007-03-05
Behind the smile is perfect for new moms, especially anyone who has ever suffered from the Baby Blues or Post Partum Depression. Amazingly, Marie was able to inject humor into a story that for the most part is deeply sad. She explains that she does so as a writer because she realizes that those who are reading the book probably need an extra lift, something to lighten the day. I never experienced post partum depression, but having grown up in the 1970s with the Donnie & Marie Show and always thinking how nice it would have been to have been as pretty or as talented as she was and still is, I loved the book. I am always amazed to learn that someone like her has problems, just like the rest of us. I don't mean to say that I ever thought she was perfect. But I wouldn't have thought she felt intimidated by the female guests on the show or that she ever thought she was too fat, etc. It kind of puts things in perspective that we are all here on this planet and have our own set of obstacles to overcome, whoever we are, whatever they might be. Marie's story is inspiring, though, because she does overcome. She manages to make sure the show of life goes on, no matter what. Good for her! Includes clinical advice from Dr. Judith Moore making this book more than entertaining ... it could actually offer more than solid encouragement, but real nuts & bolts help for someone who is suffering from PPD.
Her journey to PPD but not too much detail of getting out of it.......2007-01-04
The book was just okay for me. She spent most of the time writing about her experience of being severely depressed and how she was just barely surviving day to day, hour to hour. She seems to be a bit "ANTI" anti-depressants. I would have liked her to spend more time on her journey out of her depression; how it effected her husband and children, and how she was able to heal those relationships (she mentions that her husband and her seperated for 6 months, kind of as a side note). Also, she talks about questioning everything in her life and her motivation behind everything she is and does, but fails to mention any changes in lifestyle that made a difference in her healing process. Was it only her green manure tea, bubble baths with candles, and going on Oprah that healed her??
Awful.......2006-07-01
I had PPD after the birth of my first daughter. I sought help just months after her birth, and my recovery was complete, but not easy. During the time in which I struggled, I read every thing I could get my hands on. I am quite an avid reader to begin with, so naturally I wanted to read all I could to learn, and help myself. I understand that everyone has different experiences with PPD, but according to the womens clinic I sought help from, PPD is a major deppresion, not just a deppresion, or a "bad" few months. I am not trying to discredit her experience, but I found I could hardley relate. Brook Shields' book was much closer to my experience, and the experience of other women I have talked with. I also was a little turned off by the jokes about different possible titles for the book like "PPD ruined my manicure." It certainly might ruin anyones manicure, but I could hardly lift myself from the couch to eat, let alone get a manicure. My take is that yes she had PPD, but not to the severity that say, Brooke Shields did. I feel if you are suffering from full blown PPD, like as in MULTIPLE major deppresion symptoms, you won't really relate to this as much as maybe Brooke Shields book. I was disapointed too, because I am of the same faith, and thought maybe I could relate on different levels. I also don't think she was in the best possible care. She talked about feeling numb on medication after something like 3-4 days. Any GOOD doctor that knows specifially how to treat PPD would let you know that yes, you may feel strange for a few days, but it takes usually at least 2 weeks for them to level out. Also, medication for an episode of Major Deppresion is not a bandaid if you are activley involved in therapy etc. You are not on them forever, medication does not change you, depression, anxiety, and sleep-deprivation do. I don't think it is very wise to suggest using all the natural supplements until you are clinically and officialy diagnosed with PPD. I am involved in one of the most reputable Womens Mental Health clinics in Chicago, and I they do recommend certain books, but I can say with absolute certainty they would NEVER recommend this to women with PPD. Try something like, This Isn't What I Expected. All the best to those who are struggling with this most engulfing illness.
Voice in the Dark.......2005-10-14
I suffered from PPD 17 years ago. It was easily the most frightening thing I've ever experienced. No one understood what was happening to me, least of all myself. I was so pleased that Marie was willing to share her story and help others understand and overcome PPD. I bought this book 17 years after the fact and wish I had had it or something like it all those years ago. A must buy for anyone with PPD

Book Description
The influence of old Sweden helped to make a Swede the Swede of today. This book is an insightful look at the influence of heritage in producing national character. The history starts with the Vikings and Sweden's early trading contacts with the ancients, Rome and Egypt. There are rebel heroes, Engelbrekt and Dacke, who became legends in the hearts of common folk. There are backgrounds on prominent poets, writers, artists, scientists, and inventors. Vividly describes the advent of repression, fire, pain and suffering that contributed to the molding of the contemporary Swedish citizen.
Customer Reviews:
NOT a great book.......1999-12-27
In this small book Jack R. Evans attempts an "all-you-wanted-to-know-about-Sweden" book. Unfortunately, his book is very uneven, and it reads like a collection of high-school term papers on Swedish topics, with little connecting thread. His historical section ends with the establishment of the present royal house in 1818, his section on religion devotes more to the mythical Sankta Lucia than to either Christianity or the old faith, and sprinkled here and there are a few pages on Swedish inventors, foods and recipes. There is nothing on Swedish politics after the early nineteenth century, and almost nothing on the contributions of Swedish-Americans to our national culture. On top of that, the book is terribly edited, with typos throughout, from "Lews," Delaware, as the name of the first Swedish settlement in America (it's "Lewes") on page 1 to two different misspellings of the name for Swedish hot spiced wine on page 149. In a time when word-processors can handle almost anything, there is little excuse for Evans' almost total omission of Swedish diacritical marks. There are many far better books. For starters, try Sweden: A Political and Cultural History by Eric Elstob, and Swedish Mentality by Ake Daun (my wife says she can see me in this one!).

SNOOOOOOOOOZE...Wake Me, Shake Me When It's Over.......2005-12-06
Of a certainty, Gladys Knight is one of the top r&b vocalists of hers or any time. The girl can sing. Of all of her contemporaries Gladys still sounds the best. She out sings, Aretha, is more consistent than Patti, her career is more on track than Diana's, more lucid and controlled than Chaka and is still singing in the same keys, unlike Dionne Warwick. Today is her day. She has a great show in Vegas.
Gladys Knight's account of her life reads as a cleaned up version of the truth. She glosses over the gambling addiction in her life and never explains the truly difficult marriage she must have had with Barry Hankerson. I want to know why her son was sooo fat at such an early age. What emotional need or demon was not being fed? Ms. Knight's discretion due to concern about her children rings false. The ladies she dissed all have children. Cut the comedy, please.
Gladys threw in the obligatory gossipy tales about Aretha, Diana and a slight dis to Patti; old and tired tactics to sell a book. Do yourself a favor and find this sleeping pill in the library and look up the comments about other female artists and leave the book there.
Jealousy is an ugly thing. It was ugly when Miss Ross had Gladys and the Pips removed from a tour and it is just as ugly years later when she refers to Diana as "Miss Cute". Gladys was an innocent country church girl who got kinda gaught up in the whole show biz thang.....Suuuure, honey. We all believe you.
Motown was the best thing that ever happened to Gladys and her group. Motown gave them a number 2 hit and many other chances at success. The second class treatment is a allegation made by all but the Temptations and the Supremes. Everyone else drowned in the wave that was Diana Ross. Oh, I'm so bored with this old song! Add Gladys' name to the long list of Motown ladies who blame one woman for their inability to be everything she became.
Move over Mary, Martha, and so many others to make room for Gladys. It was her group's sucess at Motown that gave them the platform to go to Buddah and eventually shine as they did. It was just a matter of time. Didn't Gladys learn in Sunday School that everything has a season? When Gladys and her family group arrived at Motown she had uneven teeth that pushed her lip out on one side and a eye that wandered. Old pictures don't lie. Some good Motown money helped her get it together in the looks department. She should thank Motown. She refused to participate in the Motown 25. Motown helped make you a household name. From the chitlin' circuit to "good clubs" and television on the heels of "Miss Cute" and others at Motown. Shut up.
Let's tell the truth, shall we? Everyone in the "Business of Show" has enormous egos or they wouldn't be there. Some people have folk in their lives who keep them grounded more than some others. Most have internal barometers that help keep their souls in check. I have a hard time believing that any of these divas are as unassuming and humble as they want their fans to believe.
For stories that come across as more authentic read; Patti Labelle, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner or Darlene Love and a few others who paint a more balanced and honest picture of themselves.
Trivia Question: Gladys Knight made a movie in the 70's in which she was the featured actress. What was the name of it? Find out and view it then tell me if you think Berry Gordy's inordinate attention to the level one stars that ruined Gladys' chance at greater success.
From an Early Fan.......2005-08-21
I have always admired Gladys Knight enormously as an entertainer. Ever since hits such as "Neither one of Us" and "Midnight Train", my love for her music never waned. After all of these years, she is to be commended for her longevity in such a competitive industry.
As for the book, I enjoyed it so much that I read it within a 1-day period. Admittedly, after I read the prologue in which she gave an overview of her life, I was thinking "well, what else is there to know?" However, I quickly found the book to be quick-moving, enjoyable, and replete with lessons for living. She has had a very rich life in terms of both her ups and downs---and you'll likely be inspired by both.
Whenever I read biographical books, their historical references are usually illuminating. Gladys' book provides lots of insights into the singing and recording industry of old. I'm always fascinated by Motown stories anyway.
The book is well written with clarity that makes it flow smoothly; yet sophistication that sent me to the dictionary from time to time.
Motown's loss is the world's gain........2003-10-09
Gladys Knight's autobiography was not as compelling as Patti's DON'T BLOCK THE BLESSINGS, but make no bones about it, this lady has paid her dues for being the icon that she is, and the diva that she will always be. As a child performing on the TED MACK AMATEUR HOUR, a star was being groomed, but the pitfalls that she encountered while the Pips were being formed, from racism to the sexual attack, left a mark that made her stronger wtih each day that went by. The most interesting monents were during her discussion about how they were treated as a "second-tier" group when they brought Motown several hits. It seems that Berry Gordy and Diana Ross had other plans for the group, and the company made a few rules along the way on how they would be paid. Leaving Motown would be the biggest feather in their caps and the best part was when nobody looked back. She also clear up what went on behind the SISTERS IN THE NAME OF LOVE showcase, the "who discovered The Jackson Five" debate, and the dissolving of her three marriages. Quite long during her teenaged years, everything leads up to this moment, and never let it be said that Ms. Knight is not a survivor.
This book contains all the "NITTY GRITTY".......2003-05-20
Oh, I just love Gladys and I just really enjoyed reading this book. I appreciate her for being so forthcoming with her experiences without losing any of her trademark, down home southern wit to guide the reader through each chapter. Her rifts with other performers struck me as interesting. You know, I can see, in also reading Aretha's memoir, where the two divas clash. Both ladies do have the tendency to act as if they started every musical trend and discovered everybody. Glady's account of the origin of "Midnight Train to Georgia" is totally false, as is her little conversation with Nat "King" Cole (Hon, Natalie was only maybe a year old). Nonetheless, her inside tips about the music business and juggling parenthood and the business i found very informative and useful, as i too, aspire to sing. I just love her so much and I loved this book. God Bless you Gladys.
The Makings of a Soul Diva.......2002-12-03
Oh, just picked up the paperback to seeing her on an old 'Jeffersons' rerun (remember that). Loved this book! Gladys has always been a favorite of mine- that rich, flawless delivery underlined with down to earth truth and conviction- she is among the leading voices that brought soul music to the mainstream America in the 1960's.
I was mist intrigued by her honesty throughout the book, especially in speaking of her parenting of her children. I commended her for that. Her gambling addiction was another testament of how she overcame adversity and came out a winner, which was another source of inspiration for myself. I also really appreciated her honesty in relation to her tenure with Motown and the treatment they received while on the legendary label.
And then there was the dirt! What is the deal between she and Aretha? I always perceived that they would be good friends, especially since both encompass such mesmarizing, soulful voices.... I love Dionne, and I could not see her acting the way Patti portrayed her.
This is a inspirational, well written piece of work. I would recommend this purchase and much love and success to Ms. Knight for decades to come.
