A valuable, user-friendly tool for constructing one's life........1999-09-04
As my own writing sometimes includes advice columns, an editor recommended I read "Life Begins at Fifty" as a primer on how to make a wide range of sometimes complex topics easily accessible for the lay reader. It proved an excellent direction. Mr. Hansen has obviously covered the waterfront for a long time, and the breadth of his knowledge and the manner in which he integrates and conveys his subjects provides a stark contrast to most of the platitudes and off the shelf advice readers are subjected to. My spry 82 year old mother found the book a fascination and said that if she'd had access to it decades ago it would have significantly influenced and changed a number of her decisions. I know the book will prove an interesting tool for me, as it prods me toward topics I know I should be thinking about but keep putting off. One of the most evident virtues of the book is that Mr. Hansen never seems to be fighting a rearguard action as Father Time starts piling on, but instead clearly views the last half of life as when things really get interesting, a viewpoint readers of his book are likely to embrace.
The most down-to-earth, practical handbook I have ever found.......1999-08-23
There are a lot of books on "retirement" out there. There are very few like this one. I was delighted with the way it laid out every aspect of these special years of one's life. Unlike so many other texts I found on the booksellers's shelves, this one--at least to me, someone who was fast approaching fifty at the time--was downright practical. I wasn't interested in all the academic mumbo jumbo a lot of the other books contained. I just wanted a down-to-earth, practical handbook that would guide me through this potential minefield of bureaucratic and oftentimes nonsense that comes with government activity. It was obvious to me at first reading, that here was a person who was writing from his own experience, combined with an authoritative background in this very specialized field. I'm sure glad I found it!
A comprehensive guide for pre-retirement and retirement life.......1999-07-15
As a reporter in the field of aging it is my business to keep up with the plethora of books on the subject, and mature-market pioneer Mr. Hansen's "Life Begins at 50'' is still for my money one of the very best comprehensive guides available for anyone seriously contemplating the myriad issues of growing older -- and better -- in America. As the oft-dubbed "guru" of the aging field, Mr. Hansen's 30 years as an award-winning publisher, journalist, author, syndicated columnist, investigative reporter and travel writer provides the reader with concise, insightful and authoritative information. To Mr. Hansen aging equals opportunity, and this philosophy is woven throughout each crisply written chapter laced with anecdotes, stories of inspirational people, life-plan options and hard-hitting facts. "Life Begins at 50'' is not only a fun read but also an indepensible how-to reference that pulls back the curtain of mystery on everything from Social Security and wellness to longevity and creative aging.
This book has much valuable information about growing older.......1999-07-06
I found this book to be very well written and full of valuable information about enjoying life well into one's mature years. I will soon be fifty and now I am thinking about how nice it will be as opposed to dreading growing old. This is a source of inspiration for me. This book helps one to understand the value of growing older and reinforces the idea that growing older is a great opportunity. This book has much to offer those in middle age as well as those in late adulthood. I would especially recommend this book to those in the baby boom generation as they approach fifty.
Well written and comprehensive - you'll rely on it!.......1999-07-03
This concisely written book covers every aspect of aging and retirement. It is well indexed to find just the topic you need, when you need it. I especially appreciate the health and fitness information. Having just turned 50 myself, this book was the most valuable gift I received! I expect to refer to this book for sound advice many times in the course of my upcoming years.

End your Marketing Madness............2006-01-05
This is a really helpful book - very much worth the $21.75 price.
The physical book itself is unimpressive (wire bound, etc), but it's what inside that really counts here. We use many of the helpful suggestions regularly. We came across it somewhat by accident, but we're sure glad we did.
There is a lot covered here. In fact, most everything you need to run, or improve a Summer Program....or any non-profit or Child Care program. I think it's all in the way you use it's many helpful hints - those that just read it and toss it aside will gain nothing but $21.75 less in their bank account. But, use the many suggestions (we love the helpful hints inside!) for improvement and you'll have a better program as a result.
If I knew what was in here before we bought it, we'd have paid $121.75 for it.
Ms. Stanco, if you ever read these comments - thank you from all of us at Rio Rancho Public Schools outside of Albuquerque!
Amazing guide!.......2005-10-08
I have both of Ms. Stanco's books and find each one to be terrific. Marketing Madness! The Essential Marketing ToolBook for Summer Programs is a must have for any educator/administrator. This book is an excellent resource and guide and an invaluable tool to assist you in marketing your summer program. I highly recommend it!
Marketing Madness.......2005-08-21
Just like her book Programming Madness, Marketing Madness is a quick and easy read with lots of helpful information. It takes the guess work out of what needs to be done when trying to market a summer program.
A real help in every way..........2005-08-19
We own both of Ms. Stanco's books....Marketing and Programming Madness.
There are a lot of great examples of real world marketing and programming Summer Programs...just plug in and use if you need.
Text is big, and while it's not a long book, it's packed solid with good information. It's also an easy read - it can take you and hour if you skim thru it, or days if you try to gather all the wondeful details within.
This is a real find for anyone that has a Summer Camp or related situation.

The Life and Times of Loretta Young.......2007-04-20
This book is pretty straight forward. Like the title says this is a book about Loretta Youngs life; loves, Clark Gable, Spencer Tracey, Tom Lewis, etc, etc.; and faith one of the mainstays in her life threw all the good and bad times she experienced.
All in all a very good book about Loretta Young. The best part about it is that finally Loretta admitted that Judy Lewis was her biological child with Clark Gable.
Interesting.......2006-05-24
The book was interesting and I learned more about Loretta Young's life. I agree, it was a bit "candy coated", but I think it explains the "sign of the times" and that is where she was in her life. I think it is great that she had such a strong faith in God and that her religion played a very important part of her life. Her life is a good example for others. In this day and time, we let too much just "hang out there". It would be nice if our world was a little more "reserved".
What a disappointment.......2002-01-03
Whilst Loretta Young unquestionably lead an interesting life, you would not know it from this whitewashed, saintly version. This book would have been far better promoted as a commentary on Loretta Young and her relationship with god. Certainly those readers wanting to know about her experiences in Hollywood in the 1930s would be disappointed. Her screen career was largely glossed over - we are talking about a woman who worked with pioneers such as Lon Chaney - you'd barely know it from this book. Similarly, there was little on her relationship with her sisters or any comments of substance about their lives or careers. Even the more 'scandalous' elements of her life were only worth a couple of pages - the rest of the book was more like a conversion exercise. Whilst the religious element was obviously something that influenced who she was as a person, the author did not delve beyond this. It is an injustice if this is the best that can be offered in her memory.
Great recovery.......2001-11-10
She is not like you would have imagined from the TV Show. She had a lot more going on than the glamour that she displayed with her swirling entries each week.
She was not the angel one might think either but she was human and she faced it, or not, within the pages of this book. She sometimes came off as a saint and sometimes as naive but you did not always believe she could be THAT naive. Other times she came of as competent and adult, which, in my book makes her as real as a Hollywood siren can be.
The Gospel According to Loretta.......2001-10-30
This book is written through Ms. Young's eyes and appears to be her somewhat romanticized and (more importantly)spiritualized take on life. She tends to gloss over the tawdry or questionable aspects while dwelling on the spiritual aspects. Having read her daughter Judy's book, I can clearly see that there was a lot of moral conflict in her mind and this book was clearly a good way to absolve herself of most of the negatives in her life. That said, the book is an o.k. read once you begin to differentiate the truth from the romantic fiction.

Touches all the bases!.......2007-05-07
Dr. Frison covers most everything one could want to know about the prehistoric hunters of the plains in north america. His insights are not those of some bystander on the 45th floor of a New York high rise, he has been in the trenchs and participated in some of the most important digs in the last 30 years.
My only critical comment is some of his language is too academic, and should be more aimed at the man on the street. However, this can be overlooked and the book is outstanding in everyway. Belongs in everyones library that is interested in prehistory in north america.

Book Description
This is an account of what happened to the thousands of people who left the Scottish Highlands to make a new life in the United States and Canada. The book evaluates the impact of people from the Highlands on the New World. It is the story of how soldiers, explorers, fur traders, lumberjacks, guerilla fighters, railway builders, and pioneer settlers from the northern part of Scotland contributed to the United States and Canada.

"Sauvages d'Ecosse" Marching To the Sound of the Bagpipes.......2007-06-25
Perchance I was daydreaming in my world and American history classes when this was covered, but I graduated not only from high school but also from university with absolutely no appreciation of the full impact that Scottish Highlanders made on both future North American nations in the 18th and 19th centuries. Moreover, I had no knowledge whatsoever of the plight of the Highlanders in their own country nor of their eviction from their crofts, or rented lands, by the landowners, a profit-driven action that led to the Highlanders' emigration to the New World in the first place. Hunter's account goes far to rectify these omissions in my understanding of this facet of history.
Among a few of the more intriguing facts to be encountered in this book are that the Highlanders, following their defeat by the English, largely joined the armies of their conquerors and were soon deployed in defense of English interests. Meanwhile, back in Scotland, they were being dispossessed of their livelihoods by landowners who saw greater profit in large-scale sheep ranching than in the rents of their former tenants. The latter action led to migration of displaced Scots to New World colonies, where they remained loyal Tories even as their fellow New World neighbors decided to rebel and form a new nation independent of the English. As it became clear that they were on the losing side, many moved north to join those who had settled on the lands of what would later become Canada.
Some of those Highlanders who had gone directly to the northlands had done so as soldiers for the English and had defeated the French who had already claimed Quebec as their own (though a longer view of history shows us that French influence remained predominant in Quebec!).
In addition to their vast influence and ownership in the major fur trading companies, the Highlanders, or at least their immediate descendants, may be held responsible for the confederation of the provinces into what would become the Canadian nation, the building of the first transcontinental Canadian railroad, and even the advent of the sport of ice hockey! Along the way to their lasting contributions, however, the Highlanders found the same deprivation, starvation, disease, and death that awaited many other immigrants of two and three centuries ago, all of which Hunter's book carefully details.
I have but one criticism of this fine historical expose, that it does not include a glossary or footnotes with phonetic renderings of the Scottish terms and place names that one meets in the text. I have no idea whether my mental "pronunciation" even approximates something that a Scot would recognize! Also, I wish I had discovered the book when it was first released in hardcover, for a work this enduring and this significant deserves a better presentation that a soft-cover edition. I see that earlier reviewers have recommended the book for readers with an interest in the Scots; I should like to go further and extend that recommendation to readers with an interest in the early history of North America, both the U.S. and Canada, as well as an interest in the hardships endured by early immigrants to the New World, and perhaps those who find pleasure in being surprised by running across seldom-known facts that still impact contemporary life. To be happily surprised and entertained while being instructed is sometimes a difficult condition to achieve, but A DANCE CALLED AMERICA should enable everyone to achieve that condition!
How and Why did all those Scots get to North America?.......2002-02-12
Everyone has heard about the potato famines that drove the many Irish immigrants to North America, but what about their celtic sisters and brothers in Scotland? Was it the clearances or was it the disasterous battle at Culloden in 1745? Hunter's book looks not only at the myriad of issues that emptied the highlands, but also at how the Scotts got to North American and what happened to them when they got there. Hunter explains not only the economic factors in Scotland, but also the brutal conditions that many Scots endured during their passage to Canada and the United States. He looks at the political issues in Scotland, England, Canada and the United State. He examines how they survived and why what they did often depended on when and where they landed. Early emmigrants tended to have money whereas those coming later had next to nothing. Hunter tells you about the businesses that they started, the communities that they built and the leadership that they provide even today to new continent. A Dance Called America opens your eyes to a group of people rarely considered when examining the settlement of North America. While anyone interested in history will enjoy this book, those of Scottish descent will find it particularly interesting
A book that I can't forget.......2001-12-27
Some books like some movies stay with you. I learned so much about what happened in Scotland from Hunter's very interesting accounts. This book has made the kind of impression that compells me to reread it and loan it to others. It's a keeper in my bookcase now for reference. Now I am in the process of visiting those places both in Scotland and in America where these displaced peoples were sent.
An excellent book on the Scots coming to North America.......2001-06-11
James Hunter has written a great book on Scottish immigration to North America. He strikes a very good balance between Scottish events that determined why people emmigrated, and the different experiences of these gaelic pioneers.
Different periods of emmigration and settlements of Scottish immigrants are covered. The research is very detailed but thankfully doesn't result in statistics which will bore you. Rather Hunter concentrates on the actual experiences of notable settlers and explorers. It's a descriptive account that brings the period alive. I found the description of the quarantine station at Grosse Ile and Cholera Bay to be particularly moving.
This book is more than a chronicle of the hardships, challenges and frustrations that these early settlers had to endure. It reminds us of their achievements and significant contributions. You can appreciate them that much more knowing of their suffererings in a tough, new land.
I'd be giving this book five stars, but I would have liked some maps and I found the chapter on Craigellachie to wander a little bit. But this is still a wonderful book. If you're interested in Scotland or have any Scottish ancestors, add this book to your collection.
An outstanding book on a crucial period of Scottish history.......1997-10-28
Anyone who is a Scot or has a Scottish background will be fascinated by this book. Meticulously researched, it describes the harrowing lives of the many Scots folks who emigrated to the US and Canada during the 18th and 19th centuries.
We were shocked to learn that some Scottish emigrants had become slave owners, while others with few belongings and no means were left stranded on remote points of the Canadian coastline in the middle of winter.
Book Description

A wealth of photographs, including rare reproductions of the long-lost glass plates of photographer George Robertson taken during and 1874 hunt, and the photographs of L. A. Customer Reviews:
Very informative , would like more information, pictures.......2004-12-29
I got a copy of this book in an effort to learn more about the buffalo hunting era. This book makes frequent references to/ quotes of period works about the subject and does manage to give some interesting details that would be hard to find elsewhere in current literature.
I knew that the .45/70 caliber was at one point the most common rifle used, this book states that the U.S. Army issued free ammunition to the hunters as part of their Indian control/buffalo eradication program. While I don't doubt the author's statement about .50 caliber rifles being common, I've read that before, I do question the prices said to have been paid for them by the hunters- if they're right the local gun dealers made a huge markup from factory list prices.
The part I found most interesting was the history of how and when the hunting began, the reasons for the market and the prices given for the hides. There are various bits from several hunters about the hunting they did as well. I've read just a very little about the incredible number of buffalo killed, that is detailed in several places in the book, kind of shocking to modern sensiblities(and to some contemporaries as well, their efforts to stop/limit the hunt are described). I was not aware that Texas was the main killing ground, Montana was late in the game.
Numerous period illustrations of the hunt and quite a few old photographs too. Several hunter's pictures are shown (these were generally taken many years later), one of these photo's is "thought to be" Jim White- one of the best hunters of the Plains, Frank Sellers book "Sharps Firearms" p. 304 gives a different name with better attribution. The most historically valuable photographs were taken either by George Robertson in Texas in 1874 or L.A. Huffman in Montana in the early 1880's, these show actual hunts- too bad they printed so dark in the book it's hard to pick out detail.
Book Description
1922. With Illustrations. Between 1906 and 1918, anthropologist and explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson went on three long expeditions to the Alaskan and Canadian Arctic. For supplies he relied heavily on local resources, and he adopted the Eskimo way of living, thus successfully demonstrating his theory that the rigors of existence in the Arctic are much reduced by the use of such techniques. He wrote voluminously about his travels and observations. In this book, Stefansson tries by means of diaries and memories to tell the story of his first year among the Eskimos.
